Using Enums to change method behaviour

I'm working on a neural network and I am considering using enums to define neuron types stored in a layer (e.g. input, output, hidden). My question is, could I define a single method, e.g. getNeuronError() which would behave differently dependent upon the type of neuron that is defined by the enum? Would this be a suitable method of achieving what I want or are there more suitable methods?
Thanks for the help,
Nick

Nick,
Neural nets hey... very swank.
could I define a single method, e.g. getNeuronError() which would behave differently dependent upon the type of neuron that is defined by the enum?Well I suppose that kind of depends on what you mean by "behave differently"... How differently? Could all varieties of Neuron be shoehorned into fulfilling ONE generalised interface contract... Hmmm... maybe not huh.
I suspect that you'd be better of defining an "enum-like" class (or class heirarchy)... which implements a ProblemSource interface which specifies a public <Problem> getProblem() method... Leaving you free to have your Neurons implementing as many specific interfaces/aspects as required... many faces, polymorphism, and all that carp.
Just my humble opinion... Like I say... It's hard to say unless you tell us a hell of a lot more about your requirements.
Cheers. Keith.

  • Finished script: Use grep find/change to fill in a supplied table of contents

    This script is now complete, and has been the subject of most of my previous posts. Just in case anyone wanted to know what the finished script ended as, here it is.
    Thanks so much to all. A lot of really helpful folks on this board are very responsible for the success of this task. This script is to be one of hopefully many in the creation of our records. But it's a huge leap forward. Thanks again to everyone that helped.

    Task:
    Automatically find town names in listings, and fill in table of contents template on page 2 accordingly.
    Example of page 2 toc, initially:
    Example of a page of content. The town names are what need to be referenced on the TOC:
    Example of page 2 toc once script is finished:
    Because of the need to include the transaction dates on the TOC (comes as a provided, tagged-text file), a simple Indesign-generated TOC can't be used alone.
    This script uses an Indesign-generated TOC that's on a master page called "T-tocGen" ... It then uses grep search and replaces to grab the needed information, and insert it into the page 2 TOC.
    The script will update a generated TOC and then search for an instance of a page number, and town name. The generated toc lists all included towns in the following format:
    (line start)## tab townName(line end)
    In Grep, this would be (please note, extra \ for \d and \t ... javascript needs that for some reason):
    ^\\d+\\t(.*)$
    After the script gets the info it needs from a found instance of the above, it replaces that line with "---", to prevent that line from being picked up once again.
    The script with then place the needed page number in it's rightful place on page 2, replacing the XX.
    A while loop is used to repeat the above process until there are no longer any instances of "^\\d+\\t(.*)$" present.
    Not every town runs every issue, so once the script is done, it removes all remaining instance of "XX" on the page 2 TOC.
    FINAL CODE:
    TOC replace
    This script will use grep find/change methods to apply page numbers in
    tocGen to the XX's on page2TOC.

    You are correct but the problem is there are three rows, One row is 100% black, the second is 60% black and the third is 40% black. I want to change the black to blue, the 60% black to an orange and the 40% black to a light shaded blue. In the find/change option you can select the tint you want to find and replace but yea.. does work on table cells.. oddly enough.

  • How can we change the behaviour of a method by using proxy ??

    Hi ,
    can anybody tell me how we can add or change the behaviour of a method in java using the proxy object ?? it would be better if u put ur idea with an example .
    Thanks ,
    Ganesh

    Please take your time to write full words: "you" instead of "u", "your" instead of "ur". It makes your posts a lot easier to read, especially for those of us who don't have English as their native language.
    You can not really "modify" the behaviour of a method by using a proxy, but you can create a proxy, direct all but one method to the original method and provide a separate implementation for the target method.
    This way you'll have two objects with the same interface (not only in the Java sense, but all methods look the same), but differing behaviour: the original object and the proxy.
    Now if you pass around the proxy instead of the original object, then it'll look as if you changed the behaviour of your object.

  • Use Enum to Switch on Strings where one string is a java reserved word.

    Hi,
    I'm having problems switching on a string using enums, when one of the strings is a java reserved word. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Or maybe even a suggestion that I should just be stringing together if-else if and doing string compares rather than a switch.
    I've been using the following method to switch on strings.
    public enum MyEnum
    foo, bar, novalue;
    public static MyEnum stringValue(String string)
    try { return valueOf(string); }
    catch (Exception e) { return novalue; }
    Then I can switch like
    switch(MyEnum.stringValue( someString )
    case foo:
    break;
    case bar:
    break;
    default:
    break;
    Now I have run into the problem where one of the strings I need to use is "int", which is a reserved word in java, so I have to modify.
    What is the best way to handle this?
    I could just not add it to the Enum and handle it at the switch like this...
    switch(MyEnum.stringValue( someString )
    case foo:
    break;
    case bar:
    break;
    default:
    if(someString.equals("int") {  ... }
    break;
    OR...
    I could change the Enum, and return intx, by checking if the string is "int". I could check before the valueOf, or during the exception, but I know it's not good practice to use Exceptions in the normal execution of your code... as it's not really an exception.
    public enum MyEnum
    foo, bar, intx, novalue;
    public static MyEnum stringValue(String string)
    if(string.equals("int") { return intx; }
    try { return valueOf(string); }
    catch (Exception e) { return novalue; }
    OR...
    public enum MyEnum
    foo, bar, intx, novalue;
    public static MyEnum stringValue(String string)
    try { return valueOf(string); }
    catch (Exception e) {
    if(string.equals("int") { return intx; }
    else return novalue;
    }

    My advice is still to not name the enum the same as the value of the string you want to test for. That page I linked to shows how to have enums with parameters. Then you could have an enum whose name is (say) JavaInt and whose string value is "int".
    But frankly if I wanted to map Strings to actions I would just use a Map<String, Action> instead of trying to force my code into an antique construction like switch.

  • Re: [iPlanet-JATO] using begin childName Display method

    Oops. Sorry about that, Craig. I didn't realize I might leave that impression.
    I'm sure the tiled
    views work since you have so many examples of these and it's a relatively
    simple concept, isn't it?
    Not to mention a necessary one. I didn't have time to debug my code and find
    out what I was doing
    wrong where the tiled views are concerned. I decide to just try to implement
    tiled views later and
    just stick with one of everything for now and get that working.
    Yes, I have reviewed your comments and am taking them into consideration. I am
    able to save and
    retrieve values with my model at this point.
    Thanks.

    Belinda,
    He may also be binding the models, howerver, he needs to change the way
    the value appears before it is displayed which is why you would use the
    display events.
    Your null value issue is a completely different issue and has nothing to
    do with it being a tiled view. I don't want anyone getting the idea
    that the tiledView binding is broken. It does work. You issue should
    have something to do with the inconsistent way in which you are getting
    your model. At least from what I could tell in your source code that you
    sent me.
    Have you reviewed my comments I sent to you in your source code?

    Subject: [iPlanet-JATO] using begin<childName>Display method
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
    I want to be able to conditionally show/hide data as well as format
    it for display without touching the model. I found the
    begin<childName>Display and end<childName>Display methods that
    provide the hooks to do this, but I have been unsuccessful in getting
    these method to execute. I added the fireChildDisplayEvents="true"
    attribute to the jato:useViewBean tag, but this has not helped. I
    also added some debug to the ContainerViewBase class in the public
    boolean beginChildDisplay(ChildDisplayEvent event) method to see what
    was happening. The displayMethodMap was returning null for the child
    display methods that were in the view bean. I covered all the bases
    (compiling, redeploying, etc.) and nothing has worked. Is there
    anything I am missing or is there some working example of this?

    The hidden field was present in the page, but it looked like this:

    Seems like there is a small bug in the code generating this tag.

    An alternate method is Accessibility Settings when connected to iTunes. You should be able to turn it off there. I would also check out some of the answers listed to the right of this post and see if they can help.

    Is this with the Travel database or another database?
    If it's another database then make sure your columns
    allow nulls. To check this in the Server Navigator, expand
    your DataSource down to the column.
    Select the column and view the Is Nullable property
    in the Property Sheet

  • NullPointerException caused by the use of the addDoubleField method

    I develop most of my programs in BreezySwing GUI because I like the simplicity of it compared to AWT. I recently bought a new computer that I wanted to make Java equipped; just like my other two computers. I will get back to that later.
    Before I got a new computer, I made all of my programs on the first computer successfully. One of my most significant ones is a multiple conversion program developed in BreezySwing. After I made it, I wanted to make it runnable on my other computer. Using the BreezySwing jar file, the application's class file, an installed JDK, and a batch file, I now know how to make my programs work on new computers.
    Things changed when I tried to put my program on my newest computer. I moved all the necessary files (except the JDK and BreezySwing; which I downloaded again) from the original computer to my newest one. The first two computers had JDK version 7 while the newest one got JDK version 14. I made all the necessary changes to the batch file for the program (such as changing the classpath for the JDK and the class directory). However, upon running this program, Java throws a NullPointerException. This exception does not occur on either of my two other computers.
    Right away, I was determined to find the cause. I have no idea why the exception occurs, but I do know what part of the code causes the exception. By commenting out parts of a test program, I managed to find out that the use of the addDoubleField method causes the exception because it is thrown when not commented out, but it is not thrown when commented out. Here is the code for the test program:
    application: DFTest.class
    import javax.swing.*;
    import BreezySwing.*;
    class DFTest extends GBFrame {
    JTextField txtFld = addTextField("abcdefg",1,1,1,1);
    DoubleField valueFld = addDoubleField(0.0 ,2,1,1,1); /*this line causes the NullPointerException*/
    static public void main(String[] args){
    DFTest obj = new DFTest();
    obj.setSize(300,100);
    obj.setVisible(true);
    }Both my conversion program and this program use the addDoubleField method. I also tested the BreezySwing variable type DoubleField by seperating it from addDoubleField with a constructor. Java did not throw an exception for the DoubleField variable type.
    What do I need to do to get my programs working again?

    I will give one last detailed synopsis of the problem that I am having. I will do my best to include every detail and make the explanation as useful as possible.
    About a year ago I became interested in Java programming. I was learning it at school but I wanted to continue with it on my own as well. The first time I installed Java was on my first computer. I will call this computer Computer A. The first thing I did was download the JDK that was available at the time. It ended up being jdk1.6.0_07. Then I downloaded JCreator IDE because it was the same IDE that I was familiar with in the classroom. The classroom textbook was The Fundamentals of Java, by Lambert and Osborne. This textbook uses the add-on package BreezySwing which is available from their website. I downloaded whatever version or update that was available at the time. Computer A still has that same download.
    In the classroom I became very familar with BreezySwing to the point where I could use all the methods for it comfortably. During the school year, I ended up using about five different computers. There were no problems with them as far as odd errors go. Every time there was an error, it was clearly the fault of the programmer and easily fixable.
    Back to Computer A: Since almost all of the programs I wanted to write used BreezySwing, it had to be set up properly. After some instructions were given to me from my teacher, I created the PATH environment variable and set it to the location of the BreezySwing documentation; which on Computer A was:
    'C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_07\bin'
    Every kind of program that I made on Computer A works perfectly; including my test program mentioned earlier:
    application: DFTest.class
    import javax.swing.*;
    import BreezySwing.*;
    class DFTest extends GBFrame {
    JTextField txtFld = addTextField("abcdefg",1,1,1,1);
    DoubleField valueFld = addDoubleField(0.0 ,2,1,1,1);
    static public void main(String[] args){
    DFTest obj = new DFTest();
    obj.setSize(300,100);
    obj.setVisible(true);
    }By now I was getting good at making programs. Some of them I found very useful, so I wanted to make them into some type of executable file. I became familiar with all of them including .jar and .exe. However, the only one that worked for me was the batch file. I also liked its simplicity. I quickly became good at using them to execute Java bytecode.
    The next thing I wanted to do was put the useful programs I had made on a computer that was in the other room. This computer will be called Computer B. Computer B is much older than Computer A, but still a Windows.
    I knew this computer first needed Java installed on it, so I returned to the Sun download site. This time, the newest Java JDK download was jdk1.6.0_13. I also downloaded jre6 and NetBeans IDE to see if I liked it better than JCreator and to have the option to develop Java on Computer B. Next, I had to download BreezySwing again to Computer B.
    A very odd thing occurred next:
    Upon trying to extract the files of BreezySwing to the proper directory 'C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_13\bin', a message came saying that every file in BreezySwing required a password. It also said that all the files in the 'bin' folder (of jdk1.6.0_13) were read-only and it would not let any files be placed there. I still do not know why I did not have this issue with Computer A. I did not know what to do for weeks.
    In the end, I had to copy jdk1.6.0_07 from Computer A to Computer B. It already had BreezySwing in it. However, I was unable to set up NetBeans to work with BreezySwing. Part of the problem was that Computer B is too old and slow for such an advanced program like NetBeans. It was at this point that I started using batch and command prompt entirely to execute all the programs I made or used on Computer B.
    Just like I expected, every type of program I made or put on Computer B worked perfectly.
    About a month ago, I got a third computer; Computer C. By now I knew what I wanted in it so again I returned to the Sun download site. This time, I downloaded jdk1.6.0_14 and nothing else. Both Computer A and Computer B also had jre6; but not Computer C because I saw no need for it if I already had the JDK. I also did not bother with IDEs for Computer C; I just used notepad and command prompt to develop programs.
    The first program I put on Computer C was the one that I had made on Computer A. I already got it to work on Computer B, so I used that knowledge to do everything correctly for Computer C. The program would be executed by batch file which would tell the computer it was interacting with:
    1. The directory of the .class file
    2. The directory of the JDKs bin folder
    3. To include BreezySwing.jar in the execution path (needed to recognize all the methods used in the program)
    Everything about the batch files was correct. An error in the batch file would clearly cause an error not Java related; but rather cmd.exe related.
    After placing the .class file into the directory of all my other .class files (and BreezySwing)
    'C:\Documents and Settings\Java Applications\classes+src',
    I changed the information in the batch file to match the jdk update and match the correct class directory. Upon double clicking the batch file, a NullPointerException was thrown.
    Jump ahead to my test program; DFTest.class. After creating several other test programs to try to isolate the cause of the exception, this is what I found:
    When I attempt to execute the following code (after successful compilation):
    application: DFTest.class
    import javax.swing.*;
    import BreezySwing.*;
    class DFTest extends GBFrame {
    JTextField txtFld = addTextField("abcdefg",1,1,1,1);
    DoubleField valueFld = addDoubleField(0.0 ,2,1,1,1);
    static public void main(String[] args){
    DFTest obj = new DFTest();
    obj.setSize(300,100);
    obj.setVisible(true);
    }My message is too long so I will continue...

    When you published your infopath form, did you promote the field you are trying to update to a property, and allow updates (its one of the steps in publishing your form, where you pick which fields you want to show as fields in the list view)...
    Otherwise, how about get the Item.SPFile object, open it as XML, find the field you want to update, and update it that way...

  • Text or GREP find/change method to assign tags

    Hi all
    I could use a text or GREP find/change method to  assign tags to paragraph styles (for use in FindChangeByList), would anyone be able to help please?
    Steve

    Hi Peter
    I produce a quarterly magazine for which text is supplied in Word format.
    I currently run the 'FindChangeByList' script to format body text, headings, bulleted and numbered lists, web and email address text styling and to remove/correct all extraneous characters etc.
    Once the job is printed I need to produce a tagged 'accessible' readable (eg: read out loud function in Acrobat) pdf from the file, for text to speech readers.
    I am currently using the map tags to styles function, which allows me to assign tags which in turn gives me control of the 'text reading' order.
    What I'd like to be able to do is automatically apply the Tags to syles while processing the 'FindChangeByList' script.

                 copyInto.setAddress(address);
                 copyInto.setTel(tel);
                 copyInto.setEmail(email);
    }How can I correct the wrong part?
    I don't understand how to use super in equals() method and makeCopy() method.

    Try something like this ...
    public boolean equals(Object other) {
      if (other==null || !(other instanceof Person)) return false;
      Person that = (Person) other;
      return getTitle().equals(that.getTitle())
          && getName().equals(that.getName())
          && getAddress().equals(that.getAddress())
          && getTel().equals(that.getTel())
          && getEmail().equals(that.getEmail())
    Notes:
    * This overrides Object's public boolean equals(Object other), which is (probably) what you meant.
    * You don't need to call "super.getWhatever" explicitly... just call "getWhatever" and let java workout where it's defined... this is better because if you then override getTitle() for example you don't need to change your equals method (which you would otherwise probably forget to do, which would probably have some interesting side effects.
    Cheers. Keith.

  • IP Profile change methods

    Seen a lot of posts asking about IP profile change methods and so here is how i believe they work. Hopefully this messgage will remain formatted as it is typed
    You will be on one and only one of the 3 methods although there are some rare exceptions such as fixed rate lines and banded rates. For banded rates due to line issues I have been informed that it can take 3 days to sort itself out if the line remains ok. Additionally for new or reset lines the bedding in period varies between 3-10 days and than can effect the profile used.
    1 88.2% method.
    This is the newest method and basically removes the concept of a profile as such as matches similar other schemes in place by other providers. Your 'profile' is set to 88.2% of your downstream sync rate (which allows for the overheads needed that are contained wiithin the traffic). Setting is I believe reasonably concurrent with a change in sync speed but that remains to be be confirmed and it could be that it may take up to 75 minutes as per currently decreases would take. IMJOLLY has confirmed that change is immediate.
    It is believed that all exchanges will be upgraded to this method eventually but that has not been confirmed. If you run a BT speedcheck it will tell you your IP profile, if it is not a nice round value ending on 0 or 5 then you are on this method already, otherwise your profile should fit one of the values in the table further down (unless your speed is greater than I cater for) It is now suspected that only CN21 enabled exchanged may be getting updated leaving the others at a even greater disadvantage.
    2 Oldest method
    Decreases in profile take up to 75 minutes to apply, increases can take up to 3 days from the time of a higher sync.
    3 Adaptive Max
    Adaptive max is available on some exhanges and is an attempt to speed up the resets for those affected without resetting it too quickly and causing more issues if there is a line issue.
    Change depends on the lowest rate that caused a decrease and the new profile that your current sync would fall within. (decreases are within 75 minutes, the table is for increases only)

    Old rate is down the side and new rate along the top, the resultant value is the number of hours for a change to take place. This is the minimum time and it seems that it may take a few hours longer than expected, probably because I suspect that the process to check/reset the values only runs periodically and so you should probably allow up to 2 hours or so extra.

    Still not been able to get a confirmation of the upgrades (or at least mine) neither the mods here nor BT technical helpdesk have replied yet to my query on it.
    When it comes it it will I expect remove the need for a lot of people to be raising issues and calling the helpdesk.
    I am pretty sure re how adapative max is working on my line, the last few occassions have all fitted that pattern as near as I can tell exactly. Different exchanges may run the updates at different times perhaps but I suspect it is a common setting so perhaps not but for me the time starts to count from the next xx:30 time after a higher sync, lasts 12 or 24 hours and then the next xx:30 time therefater the profile gets reset.

  • Using enums or Arrays?

    Hi all,
    I have a bunch of constants for one particular object. I also have a bunch of constants for another object. Each constant in one object has its equivalent in the other object, for example constant A in object 1 is equivalent to constant B in object 2. I want to create a hashMap having the constants from one object being the keys, with the equivalent constant in the other object being the values. I was just wondering should I use enums to store the constants and use the .values() method to loop through , or use a string array, or use an ArrayList? What are the advantages pitfalls for both? Which is better programming practice!
    Thanks and regards!

    It sounds to me like making a separate representation of just the names of the elements would be overkill. I mean, you could, but it's not clear to me what the advantage would be. It might be easier just to put the data type representation in the javadocs, or if you really want to be explicit you could have an interface for the objects that do the parsing, and specify a method like:
    public String getDataTypeName();And then provide implementations like:
    public String getDataTypeName() { return "R4"; }I mean, do you really need to look these things up by name?
