Using fullstop (period) in shortname in Workgroup Manager
Apparently in Mac OS X 10.3 Panther Server, using a fullstop in a users shortname was a 'bad thing', see http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20836?viewlocale=en_US
Obviously Panther is out of date, and I am not using it, but I would like to know if this is still an issue for Snow Leopard Server. Interestingly, Workgroup Manager for both Tiger 10.4.11 and Leopard 10.5.8 Servers deliberately tries to stop you creating a shortname with a fullstop in it, although I have found a workaround for that, but Workgroup Manager for Snow Leopard Server does allow you to use a fullstop.
Why do I want to use a fullstop in a shortname?
Well, Mac OS X Server uses the shortname in conjunction with the mail server to authenticate email users. It is however also used to generate the primary email address of the user. Therefore if you want an email address to look like [email protected] you would need a shortname of john.smith hence the need for using a fullstop.

Hello John
I'm not sure if this is a problem as such? You could have short names with full points separating the first and last names. It's only the first short name where that was not possible. You can add as many short names as you like thereafter with full points wherever you like them. Any of them can be used to generate the email address. As I recall this was the case with 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5. I've not had chance to use 10.6 yet but I would imagine it would be the same?
Having multiple shortnames is what I am trying to avoid. Doing so is an administrative overhead, increases the possibilities of duplicates/conflicts, and worst of all increases the amount of spam users would receive since they would get emails (spam) via each shortname they have defined.
As per the KB article I linked to, it was clearly a 'bad thing' in Panther Server to use a fullstop in the (only) shortname, but it is not clear if this is still an issue for Tiger, Leopard, and especially Snow Leopard. As I also indicated Tiger and Leopard try and prevent you doing this, but the article does not say if it is still a problem for them. However Snow Leopard Server does let you use a fullstop in the first (only) shortname.
I am trying to establish if this change in behaviour of Snow Leopard Server indicates Apple now feel it is no longer a problem, or is merely a mistake.
Ah! Page 67 of the (now available) Snow Leopard Server User Management manual, says shortnames can contain A-Z, a-z, 0-9, _, -, and . (fullstop/period). As this is consistent with the new changed behaviour of Snow Leopard's Workgroup Manager it looks like it should be safe to use fullstops in shortnames on a Snow Leopard Server.

Problems using the Workgroup Manager(10.4.4.)
I am currently using and OS X 10.2 server and have been using version 1.2 of the Workgroup Manager to remotely modify FTP users on the 10.2 server. I have recently updated to version 10.4.4 on a separate workstation, and I am having trouble using the newer version of the WGM (Workgroup Manager). The problem starts after I have created the FTP folder on the server, and linked the folder with a new FTP user, all that works just fine. I get stone walled when I go to changing the read/write privileges of the newly created user. I log into the 10.2 server through either WGM as a user that has been set as an “admin” user, and with WGM version 1.2 these permissions works perfectly fine. With WGM 10.4.4 I do not have sufficient privileges to modify ANY those setting, or even look at the dialog boxs. The only solution I have been able to find thus far is to log in to the 10.2 server with WGM 10.4.4 as the supper-user of the 10.2 server. That has been the only way I can make the WGM 10.4.4 work. Dose any one out in forum land have any ideas on how I can remedy this situation? The solution I see is to make another user that has similar privileges as the super-user (but please give me other ideas if anyone has them).
G4s Mac OS X (10.2.x) OSX 10.2 Server
iMac, G4s, G5s Mac OS X (10.4.10) we have a lot off macs, so ask about a specific oneNever use WGM from a different OS X server version than what you have on your server - they are incompatible.
Use ARD/VNC (maybe over VPN) instead if you can't use/install the correct WGM on the remote admin machine.
And/or use SSH (maybe over VPN) and CLI/Terminal. -
Create local admin from workgroup manager
Just wondering if there is a way to create a local admin on a 10.6 MacBook using Snow Leopard server in the Workgroup Manager?

Using Workgroup Manager via SSH tunnel
Hi all,
I'm attempting to use the Workgroup Manager app to remotely administer a OS X Tiger Server box. The server sits inside my company's LAN behind a firewall, which only allows traffic to the server on ports 21 (ftp), 22 (ssh), 80 (http) and 311 (server admin with SSL, I believe). All services on those ports work fine.
My research on the net indicates that the Workgroup Manager app uses port 625, but since the hardware firewall is blocking traffic on that port to the server, I'd like to create an SSH tunnel to access it. I've tried the following command on my local machine (i.e., not the server):
$ sudo ssh -L 625:localhost:625 [email protected]
and am able to set up the tunnel with no problem. However when I try to connect Workgroup Manager (on the local machine) to localhost, it won't let me connect. So I tried telnetting to localhost port 625 (on the local machine) to see what's up, and received the following error:
$ telnet localhost 625
Trying ::1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.
Am I missing something? I was under the impression that the SSH tunnel would allow me to access port 625 on the server via port 22. The software firewall is disabled on both machines, so it's not that. I'm not experienced with SSH tunnelling, so I could be totally wrong about the way this is supposed to work.
Thanks in advance!A quick tcpdump here indicates that Workgroup Manager uses both 311 and 625 when establishing a connection to the server. It may be the lack of port 311 tunneling that's causing your problem.
$ sudo ssh -L 625:localhost:625 -L 311:localhost:311 [email protected] -

How to you "publish" Bonjour Shared printers using Workgroup Manager?
Dear Friends,
Hello. We have just spend considerable time setting up Mac OS X 10.6.4 server to host some printers to our Mac clients (previously we had used a Windows print server but it was too slow and inflexible). We have the printers we need set-up and shared out as Bonjour Shared printers because that sends out all of the duplex setting we need. I have tried to "publish" these using Workgroup Manager and they do not show up on the list. How do you "publish" these printers using WGM? NOT: We can't just let people select "nearby" printers because we want to set a default and use kerberos security.Eric T Gadsby wrote:
Anthony,
Thank you for you help. The procedure you outline is what we have attempted to do. We add the Bonjour-shared printers to a client and then open Work Group Manager on the same computer but when you go to the "Printing" pane of "Preferences" the printers do not show under "Available Printers", neither do USB printers.
Hope this clarifies our problem. We would like to use Work Group Manager as advertised but it doesn't seem to be working for us.
Welcome to my world…
This 'bug' has existed for several major versions of Mac OS X Server (10.6, 10.5, and maybe 10.4). I did report it more than once to Apple as an official bug but they don't seem to 'get it' despite my best efforts.
You can do the following
Add a printer directly to a computer running WGM,
Then use WGM to 'push' the printer out to clients,
The model of the printer will then also be pushed out to clients so they automatically select the correct driver but not the correct paper tray/duplex/etc. settings.
You can do the following
Add a Mac OS X Printer Server queue to the computer running WGM (which must not be the same computer acting as the Mac OS X Printer Server) if you do this via the Bonjour advertisement of the queue then it will not get the model, or any settings from the print server.
You can then push this queue out to clients via WGM
You cannot do the following
Add a Mac OS X Printer Server queue to the computer running WGM (which must not be the same computer acting as the Mac OS X Printer Server) if you do this via IPP, then the WGM machine will get the model automatically, but not any paper tray/duplex settings.
However this queue cannot then be seen in WGM and therefore cannot be pushed out to clients.
Apparently doing custom XML, would allow also pushing out printer settings, but this is so far from 'the Macintosh Way' that only a masochist would do it.
This area is one of the few where the Mac is significantly worse than Windows, it is an area that Microsoft (mostly) sorted literally decades ago. Not only in the Windows world can you push the printer model, and the printer settings, but you can even if needed push the entire printer driver out to the (Windows) clients. -
How to enable Remote Management on multiple Macs using Workgroup Manager?
Hi
I want to use workgroup manager to enable remote management on multiple macs I manage.
How can I do that?
Regards,
Omer BarelThe only way I know to enable remote managment remotely is by running kickstart.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2370
If you are already using a login script you could run kickstart from there.
We clone our Macs with remote management turned on.
Otherwise, lace up your sneakers. -
Cannot connect Workgroup Manager using a domain administrator account
Hello,
I'm trying to determine if this is normal behavior or something is not working right:
When using Workgroup Manager (remotely or locally on the server) it will only let me connect with the local (Netinfo) administrator account that was created upon install of the server. It will NOT let me log in with the diradmin account that was created when promoting the server to an OD master (or any other accounts I created (under the LDAP directory) and checked User can "administer the server" and "administer this directory domain").
Once connected to WGM with the local admin account I then can (and still need to) authenticate to the directory database using the diradmin account (which works). Is this normal behavior?
From reading Apple's User Management documentation it seems to indicate that once a domain administrator account is set up you can use that account to log into WGM.
Thanks in advance.
- Brian
Mac OS X (10.4.6)OK, it looks as though I've figured this out. Using the Directory Access utility on the server itself, I needed to add the "LDAPv3/127.0.0.1" directory domain to the list of domains to search for authentication.

Workgroup Manager and Server Admin 10.5 - Use to manage Tiger Server?
Is it possible to use Workgroup Manager and Server Admin 10.5 running on Leopard Client to administer Tiger Server?
I'm having major problems with server tools managing my 10.4.11 server. I'm finding that at least with the web management tools, I cannot make any changes to the 10.4 server Sites. To make matters worse, I cannot install 10.4 tools to get back that functionality.
-
I have a mac which is connected to a network and is bound to both OD and AD with no issues on my server when I try to manage it through Workgroup manager it does not appear.
I have unbound it , removed it from both systems completely and even rebuilt it but it still does not appear in WGM.If your server is 10.6 and your client is 10.7 you'll have to add it manually to WGM
via mac address. 10.7 clients don"t automatically appear in 10.6 server wgm -
as well as shared devices you can see locations etc in the side bar. i know you can edit this in finder preferences or simply drag them off and they will be removed but i want to remove them as a student logs on. i know you can edit the finder plist file in workgroup manager but i do not know what keys i need to add to remove these options and the keys are not there as default can anyone please help any ideas on how to achieve this would be great
Please post in the Photoshop forum.

Can I use Workgroup Manager with a 10.4 server and a 10.6 admin station?
I just upgraded my admin station from 10.5.x to 10.6.8. Now my Workgroup Manager won't work. I'm assuming it's because of the new operating system. I keep getting an error message about ememory allocation. My server is still running 10.4.11. What can I do besides getting a new server to make this situation work? I really need to control what programs that my students can access and I'm very frustrated right now. Thanks for any help you can give me.
Hello, I think it always been version specific, & is no longer even included...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5308
But as mentioned there, some older versions are available, but I think you'll have to figure a way to run your version on the older OS. -
Error -14135 Creating New User In Workgroup Manager
Hello,
I'm running 10.5.8 on a Mac Server, and until today have had no issues adding new users with a preset I've created in Workgroup Manager. Today, I've received the message:
Got unexpected error
Error of type eDSRecordAlreadyExists (-14135) on line 1268 of SourceCache/WorkgroupManager/WorkgroupManager-361.2.1/PMMUGMainView.mm
This error appears before I'm even able to enter any information.
I would appreciate any suggestions! Right now I'm running Disk Utility and repairing permissions. I haven't found any other ideas online.
Thank you!Following is the text from Note for Custom Password Validation logic:
Customers who wish to use their own password validation logic may do
so by writing their own Java classes that implement the
oracle.apps.fnd.security.PasswordValidation Java interface. The
interface requires 3 methods to be implemented:
1) public boolean validate(String user, String password)
- This method takes a username and password, and then returns true
or false, indicating whether the user's password is valid or invalid,
respectively.
2) public String getErrorStackMessageName()
- This method returns the name of the message to display when the
user's password is deemed invalid (i.e., the validate() method returns
false).
3) public String getErrorStackApplicationName()
- This method returns the application shortname for the
aforementioned error message.
After writing the Java class to perform customized password
validation, the customer must then set the value of the profile option
SIGNON_PASSWORD_CUSTOM to be the full name of the class. If, for
example, the name of the Java class is
oracle.apps.fnd.security.AppsPasswordValidation, then the value of the
SIGNON_PASSWORD_CUSTOM profile option must be
oracle.apps.fnd.security.AppsPasswordValidation. Note that AOL/J
will attempt to load this class dynamically. Hence it is necessary to
make the class accessible by AOL/J. This means that in Forms, the
class must first be loaded into the database using the loadjava
command.

10.6 Workgroup Manager Client Setting Issues
I have upgraded to 10.6 from 10.5 and have binded the computers to my Xserve running 10.6. The settings made in Workgroup Manager work but the small issue I'm having is that the clients are losing connection during the night or something because although they are getting the settings one day, the next day it isn't connected and I have to restart or log in to the computers to get the settings again. Is anyone else having the same issue? It's not that big of a deal but it's not something that happened when I was using 10.5. I just want to know if other people are having the same problem
I have a very similar issue to what you are describing. I have an open directory master on a 10.6 xserve and my clients include both 10.5 and 10.6 machines. My clients tend to lose their settings in the 3-4hr idle time range. Here is what I have found out so far:
1. The machines will lose their settings in what appears to be a random period of time following a reboot or log in (generally 3-4 hrs).
2. The machines will not pull OD settings on the next successful log in. However, every log in attempt following the one with the missed settings will get all of my settings.
3. This only affect my 10.6 clients only. All clients running 10.5 will pull settings every time without a hitch from the 10.6 OD master.
4. Fresh install of my 10.6 server OD master does not fix the issue.
5. Fresh install of my clients to 10.6 does not fix the issue.
6. ManagedClient crashes every day or two. Originally I thought the issues were related but it appears that the OD settings are lost even if the CrashReporter log is not generated.
Currently I have just gotten used to rebooting the machines about twice a day to keep the settings fresh but this is really not a long term solution. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

Can not locate Workgroup Manager; possibly not installed?
Here's the story:
I'm trying to get my new camera software installed and one of the steps is to launch Image capture.
Image capture gives me an error saying: "No Image Capture Device connected."
Apple says to fix this I need to open Workgroup Manager (in /Applications/Server/) and change some preferences.
But, I can not find Workgroup Manager for the life of me. I used spotlight with no luck. I also don't have a folder in Applications titled Server. This worries me and makes me wonder if the program could have been deleted or not installed at all?
Any suggestions on how to find WgM would be welcome.Whoa... somebody got confused someplace... I wouldn't guess you are running OSX Server on a MacBook, but the oSX CXlient instead, so no idea how Apple came up wih that solution.
You likely should not have a Server folder there, nor the APP they speak of.
What kind of Camera exactly, and how does it connect?
