Using IP address in order to open a web page
Hello all,
For example, if I want to open the page www.google.com, i simply write this address in the address bar, then I press enter, and I see the page of the google in my browser.
However, instead, if i write the IP address of the page www.google.com in the address bar (let's suppose it is 1.2.3.4), the page is not opened. In this case, I receive an error saying that "problem loading page". Why is this happenning? is that the expected result, or is google preventing it somehow? If the google is preventing that, what might it be doing? How can it detect it, and what can be the bad result of just using the IP address instead of writing "www.google.com" from the view of google?
note: google is just an example here. it is also not working writing the IP address in other web sites.
Thanks & Regards
hs
hi again,
i checked the firewall and browser settings, but i could not find anything..
actually, i also want to write the reason why i came across this problem. i am a student, and i read sth on the net recently. it was about what happens if other people catch the chance to modify the settings of your computer. it was saying that if you place a new setting in the HOSTS file, you can phish people in this way.
for example, here is the content of my HOSTS file:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
# For example:
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
for example, add this line to the hosts file:
1.2.3.4 www.google.com
save the file, and close. later, if you write www.google.com on your browser, instead of google's page, the page having the IP address 1.2.3.4 will be open.
i tried this, but it didnt work. later, i also write the IP address on the address bar, it did not work again.
so, i hope someone can catch the reason here.
by the way, my OS is windows XP home edition.
thanks for all answers! :)

Can't open any web pages message comes up it times out
we trying to open any web page say it has times out. Tried different users but all say the same
Have you looked at what preferences Safari is using?
Also, did you have an older version?
Still won't work after restart?
There is never a good reason to "drop your guard" and disable or have to configure a normally working firewall.
Chrome - I didn't like where it installed itself in Vista, ~/AppData/Local is NOT a valid location, along with half a dozen other 'features' and behavior. Also, when I uninstalled, why does it need to go to a web page, other than to register my IP address - without asking, and without launching my default (Minefield) and launching IE7.
So I would try uninstalling Chrome just to rule out incompatibility, and to warn you that it does things that may not be what you expect either.
Safari for Windows doesn't seem to respect some things that affect if and when a web page is saved to local cache, and can only see a problem if you had Safari working earlier (a common thread, installing Safari over older version it seems).
If you want to try the nightly WebKit build:

How can I open cached web pages?
I know these are cryptically stored somewhere under Library/Caches/Safari, but is there a way to actually open these as web pages?Try using:
tell application "Finder"
set theURL to "yourURL"
repeat with this_file in (get every file of entire contents of folder "Library:Caches:Safari:" of home)
try
set the_string to (read (this_file as alias) from 1 to 1000)
on error
set the_string to ""
end try
if the_string contains theURL then
reveal this_file
return --script stops right here if line reached
end if
end repeat
display dialog "No cache file exists for that address." buttons "OK" default button "OK"
end tell

Can not open any web page in Safari
can not open any web page in Safari on the IPad. All other wireless features work fine.
If this does not work then try a reset ,
Reset your iPad by pressing the 'Sleep' and 'Home' button at the same time for about 15 seconds or so. Your iPad will then go through a reset / reboot procedure and will be ready for use within about a minute.
Don't worry about doing this as you will not lose data or settings.
Good luck and do report back. -
Opening a WEB page from FORMS CS & WebForms
Hi,
We would like to open a Web Page from a forms running in
client/server as well as from a form runningover the web.
Over the web, we plan to use SHOW_DOWUMENT (Even tough it seems
broken, on forms 6.0, the only way we have got it working was by
using the parameter that overwrites the current page (the form),
we cannot have it open an URL in another window)
In C/S mode, the SHOW DOCUMENT does not work. What is the proper
way to lauch an URL in a browser in C/S mode ?
Is there a way to determine if we're running in CS mode or Web
Mode ? We would like to use the same code both on the web and in
C/S
Example pseudo code:
if (Running in CS Mode) then
open the URL using C/S method
else
open the URL with show dowument
fi
Thanks
nulluse '_blank' as parameter, not '_self'.

How do I open a web page in Adobe Reader? I got the app for ipad2, but when a page says I need a certain version of AR, I don't know what to do. I'm a new user and don't know if I have to "open" AR and it automatically reads whatever doc I have up on the web, or is it always running and any web page I'm on should show a button to click in order to open the page in AR?
If a website says that you need a certain version of Adobe Reader, it is probably attempting to detect whether or not you have the Adobe Reader browser plugin installed. This is something that only works on desktop systems where browser plugins exist. Since browser plugins don't exist on mobile, website developers should take care to present different messages and provide different options for downloading PDF's when visited by mobile browsers. I recommend contacting the website owner and requesting that they implement access for mobile devices.

Safari keeps giving and error message. " Safari can't open the web page( insert web page here) , because it can't establish a secure connetion to the server.
It only seams to have a problem with https sites.
Any help would be appreciatedThe "s" in "https" indicates the site is a secure server--usually a site that will require a password. Connections to secure servers can be blocked by parental controls. Are you using any parental controls, either through OSX's settings (in System Preferences) or third party parental control software (such as Netnanny)? If so, check the settings to make sure they will allow the connection.

Buttons opening a web page within a web page.
I want to click on a button that will open a web page inside the same web page. How how I do this?
Thanks, LThe frame option is to use an inline frame, or <iframe> into which you place a source url, which can be a page on your site or a pdf or a page on the internet. This call is placed inline, as its name implies. You might want to experiment with its placement in your page, floating, various widths and heights, until you get it the way you want it.
<iframe src="http://[path to your page here]" name="appropriateName">Content 1</iframe>
Be sure to style your iframe tag to have an adequate width and depth; those will not style automatically.
If you want it accessible only by mouse-click, consider putting it into a Spry Collapsing Panel that defaults to "closed". Be sure to put the <iframe> tag and its closing tag </iframe>, in this case, in the content area on the Collapsing Panel.

[JSP] Opening a web page?
Hello,
Basically, I am using JSP to accomplish something on my website. I am familiar with Java (not that I am good at it or anything), and the syntax is obviously quite similar to JSP. What I would like to do is open a web page (say http://www.google.co.uk) using JSP.
Basically I have code like this...
if (something equals something then do this)
//go to http://www.google.co.uk
}I suppose in essense I want to achieve what can be done in JavaScript by using the "window.open" thing, except I need to use JSP to do this so I can fit it in with the rest of my code.
Can any kind souls help me out :)?

Edited by: Martyn on Mar 10, 2008 9:45 AMAll your javascript functions belong between tags something like: <script lang="javascript></script>. You'll need to look up the exact syntax.
All java code belong between <% and %>
If you want the value returned by a java class function that returns a string, use <%= %> -
