Using ipod as a hard disk

Hi,
I'm using iPod 30GB. I tried to set my iPod to be an external hard disk by following the steps in the support. Although, I tried a hundred times, I'm still having trouble that my iPod doesn't appear in the Windows Explorer on my PC. Could you tell me why? Thanks for your help ahead.

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.
Still no joy, see these.
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod.
Strange iPod behavior.
Are you doing the disk mode procedure correctly?

  • Transfering music from pc to mac using iPod as a hard disk drive

I just got MacBook Pro and iPod which I have formatted for a mac, however, I want to get the songs from my IBM thinkpad to my mac. I transfered a bunch of them with a friends external hard drive, but forgot about all my purchused songs from the music store. I am pretty sure there is a way to use the iPod as a hard disk drive but everytime i attach it to my thinkpad it asks if I want to format the iPod and then won't transfer. So I guess my question is can I do this and if I can do I have to format it to windows and then transfer the files to the iPod and will I be able to put the files from my thinkpad to my mac?
    thanks!!!

An iPod formatted for Mac won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. You can reformat your iPod on Windows if you want to use it on both platforms as Macs can read Windows formatting, then you could enable it for disk use on the PC: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer

  • Using ipod as external hard disk between macbook and PC

    Hello
I have formatted my ipod mini to the mac, but I also have a PC at home which I want to transfer files to and from. Can the ipod still be used as an external hard disk between the macbook and the PC or is that not possible?
    Thanks

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. XPlay for instance gets good reviews and has the added functionality to let you copy your songs back to iTunes. MacDrive from the same company is not iPod specific it's for connecting any Mac formatted drives, if you want to use your iPod as a removable storage device it will work for that. You can get XPlay and MacDrive at these links:
    XPlay 2

You can read another user's experience of using XPlay at this link: iPod on Mac and Windows

  • Using iPod as external hard disk....

I'm sure this topic will have been covered, but I can't find an answer to my problem, which is......
I want to use my iPod as an external hard disc; according to the instructions, I should be able drag music from the iPod Nano (bought just 4 weeks ago) into iTunes (when switching computers, for instance). I have followed the instructions, and clicked on Enable Disk Use, then shut iTunes down; apparently I should be able to see Ipod in Windows Explorer.....but what the heck do I do then?
I'm afraid if I try to restore my iPod I'll loose all the music on it - and it's full - and I don't want to that to happen.
    Please help! All help appreciated!

  • Using ipod as portable hard disk drive

I have an ipod - iphoto - 20GB. altho i have enabled it for disk use, after dragging my files into the 'notes' folder, i am still unable to view the files in the ipod. i can see the title of the file, but when i click on the file to read, i see only 5 incoherent symbols. what does this mean? why cant i see the files in my ipod?

hmm.. haha.. thanks.. the link u provided above is quite useful.. i wish that the text length will be longer. plus, even if i bold or underline the words i dont see it in my ipod..
btw, if i don't "safely remove hardware" for my ipod when i disconnect it from teh com (updating ipod and everything is done - files closed and stuff) will my ipod spoil? i did that a few times cos it often says 'ipod device cannot be disabled now. pls try again later'. then my ipod has problems shutting off. even clicking on the 'sleep' also cannot switch it off. i had to wait until the specific time whereby the ipod will go into sleep mode. what happend?

  • Trying to use my iPod as a hard disk

The iTunes tutorial, under "Other ways to use your iPod," gives specific instructions for enabling "your iPod to work as a portable hard disk," but the instructions do not follow what I see on my screen ("Select your iPod in the iTunes Source list" is one of them (there is no such thing. "Click the Options button on the lower right corner..." isn't there, either). Can anyone please tell me how I can set up my 3G iPod as a hard disk so I can transfer music and podcast files there without going through iTunes, which is a program I find excessively intrusive? Thanks. --Fred Powledge.

Connect your iPod and when it shows in iTunes click on it's icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. In the Summary tab check the box "enable disk use" and click the Apply button in the right hand corner: Using your iPod as a storage drive

  • Need help using iPod as external hard drive

Hi. Will soon be receiving a new iMac to replace my old Dell PC and had a question about how to get all of the contents of the Dell hard drive onto my new iMac using my 60GB iPod. I am a complete computer novice.
    1. How do I do it?
    2. The iPod is currently formatted for my Dell PC. Once I have transferred all of my files (including music) over to the iMac, do I need to reformat the iPod? How do I do this?
    3. Will all my playlists in iTunes be saved when I do the transfer?
Any advice or direction to links would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

"how to get all of the contents of the Dell hard drive onto my new iMac using my 60GB iPod"
If everything you've got will fit then enable your iPod for disk use and drag what you want onto it, or do it a bit at a time: Using your iPod as a hard disk
There is a good general guide to switching from Windows to Mac at the following link that touches on moving music as well How to Move to a Mac - Get your stuff from your PC to your new Mac
"1. How do I do it?"
Have a look at this guide specifically on moving iTunes: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
"2. The iPod is currently formatted for my Dell PC. Once I have transferred all of my files (including music) over to the iMac, do I need to reformat the iPod? How do I do this?"
If you don't intend using your iPod on Windows again the you can reformat it by restoring it on the Mac: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings
"3. Will all my playlists in iTunes be saved when I do the transfer?"
If you follow the instructions in the guide you should have your whole library just as it was.

  • Using iPod as a hard drive between Mac and PC

I'd like to use my Mac-formatted iPod to back up some personal files om my work PC laptop, and then transfer them to my Mac at home. I need to repeat this process every month or so.
I've enabled my iPod for disk use, but the PC wants to reformat in order to allow me to use it as a hard drive on the PC. However, all of my iTunes and photos and videos are on my Mac at home, and I'd like to keep the iPod Mac-formatted.
There appears to be some 3rd-party software trials out there, but I'm reluctant to download anything that is potentially sketchy.
    Advice will be greatly appreciated.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Also a PC user (at work)

Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows.
If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.

  • Using ipod as a hard drive to transfer data from PC to Mac

hey, Is is possible to use the ipod as a hard drive to transfer data from/to Mac and windows PCs?
I see no problem transfering data from/to my mac to the ipod. But I cannot see the ipod on the PC. When I plug the USB cable to my windows PC, it shows a popup message "external disk is not formated. Do you want to format it?".
    thanks,
    Martin

Windows cannot read a Mac formatted iPod.
Macs can read Windows fomratted iPods.
You need to run iTunes for Windows, then Restore the iPod.
It will now work on both Mac and PC.

  • How do I recover tunes from my iPod after a hard disk crash?

I've just received my PowerMac back after a hard disk crash and am having to reinstall all software etc.
My iPod obviously contains all the music I'd downloaded from the iTunes music store and all the CD's I'd loaded manually into iTunes.
I can't see any way of copying the tunes on my iPod back into my iTunes library...
    Can anyone help?
I had to use a data recovery tool to recover data from my disk after the crash and it's going to be a really long job to sort out what's what...

You can't sync or drag your music back from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. I use Senuti but check the others out and choose whichever you prefer.

  • Want to use a Lacie External Hard Disk with Windows and Mac? Can I?...

Hi, I've just purchased a Lacie Extreme D2 external hard disk, I'm looking to use it to move film clips from my Mac G5 to my Sony Vaio laptop. I'll connect the Mac using Firewire 1 and the PC using USB 1.
I understand there is an issue with setting the compaitibility of the hard disk to either Mac or Windows format but I'm wondering if I can set it to both, so it's possible to transfer these files? The hard disk is Windows and Mac compatible but does it have to be partitioned a certain way?
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alex

Format the drive as FAT or use the Mac format (HFS Extended) and install MacDrive on the PC.

  • Use previous "Delete from hard disk" checked state?

Is there any way for the program to use the previous "Also delete selected item(s) from the hard disk" checked state in the file deletion confirmation dialog?  It gets tedious to check it every time I want to delete a file and if I forget to do it I will have an extra file sitting on my hard disk not in my catalog.

A quick shortcut that I use is to hit the spacebar (checks/unchecks the "delete from
hard disk" option), then hit the enter key to complete the process.

Are you wanting each machine to view those photos thru iPhoto? There are several ways of sharing and others can fill you in more on the conventional ways. Some are:

Let me suggest another possible way.
That is use iPhoto in it's alias mode on each of the machines. Then store your source files on the external HD and let each machine create an alias based library of those files. Each machine will have an independent, unique library whose edits, slideshows, etc will be unique to that machine. Those machines can only delete the alias files from their library, they can't touch the original source files. The only caveat is if the external HD is not mounted the library will only be able to be used in a limited way, viewing thumbnails, adding comments and keywords only. You can put a few photos in a folder on the external HD and create a test alias library to experiment.
