Using JSTL variables in JSP or Javascript. Possible ?

Hi All,
Is it possible to share or use the variables which are declared are used by JSTL in JSP expression or scriplet code and in Java Script.
Example:
This Works:
<fmt:set var="test" value="JSTL" />
<fmt:out value="${test}" />
But, this gives error:
<% out.println(test) %>
And passing the value of variable 'test' to Java Script code also gives error.
How to use JSTL variables in JSP and in Javascript ?
Yours,
Sankar.B

By default, JSTL variables are kept in servlet
attributes. Default is to store it in the page
context. You can make it request/session/application
scope as required by an attribute of the set tag.Hi there,
Can anyone advise how to access JSP variables in JSTL?
Can it be done as the same method through request/session/application scope?
Thnks...

  • How to access variables across JSP and JavaScript?

    Hi,
    I have some .js files and in those files, some of the methods need to access to the variables that I'd declare in the jsp files. How do I do it?
    Anne

    You can do it this way, but I'm not sure if this is what you had in mind.
    Say you had a java variable called XString. And you wanted to display
    the value of XString in a javascript Alert. Here's how:
    <html>
    <body>
    <% String XString = "Hi There!"; %>
    </body>
    <script language="javascript">
    alert("<%=XString%>");
    </html>Hope This Help,

  • How to use enviroment variables in JSP code?

    Im developing a web server with JSPs, and I need to move the application to others computers. I need to access to a directory, but I dont know it because the user can install the Application in the directory he wants. So I need to access to that directory in the JSP code.
    The directory is "C:\Program Files\....\tomcat\webapps\ROOT\upload". I have the CATALINA_HOME enviroment variable defiened as "C:\Program Files\....\tomcat\", so I need to use something like "CATALINAHOME\\webapps\upload\", but I dont know how to mekr the JSP code to understand the enviroment variable CATALINA_HOME.
    Ive tried with %CATALINA_HOME%, but the Tomcat server doesnt recognize it. How can I access to that directory?
    Thanks (Sorry about my english)

    My JSPs are in: %CATALINA_HOME%\webapps\ROOT\
    I want to access to %CATALINA_HOME%\webapps\ROOT\upload\
    My JSP code:
    <% ...
    String DPATH = "C:\\Program Files\\JBuilder7\\jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3\\webapps\\ROOT\\upload\\";
    File newfile = null;
    newfile = new File(DPATH+filename);
    %>
    I want the JSP to locate the directory \webapps\ROOT\upload\ without knowing the complete route "c:\Program Files\...", because I have the enviroment variable CATALINA_HOME with the value "C:\Program Files\JBuilder7\jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3\". SO the user of the aplication only has to set the CATALINA_HOME variable and the aplication should access the upload directory throught the CATALINA_HOME variable.
    I cant explain it better. Sorry.

  • Using static variables in JSP

    Hi All,
    I have written the following code, but its not compiling saying that "Class or interface declaration expected. static "
    I dotn know whats wrong in this scriplet though.. any help is greatly appretiated.
    <%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"
    pageEncoding="ISO-8859-1"%>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">
    <title>JSP Scriplet</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <%
    static int counter = 15;
    for(int i = 0; i < 15; i++){
    int p = returnCounter();
    if(p == 0)
    System.out.println("I am the 15th user");
    public static int returnCounter(){
    counter = counter - 1;
    System.out.println("counter : " + counter);
    return counter;
    %>
    </body>
    </html>

    Simply put, you're Java code is wrong.
    The detail is that essentially all of the code in your JSP file is in one big method.
    So, here's what your code looks like to the compiler:
    public void _internalJspDoPageCode() {
        static int counter = 15;
        public static int returnCounter() {
    }You can't simply nest methods like this in Java.
    If you want to, you can try this:
    <%
        public class mycounter {
            static int counter = 15;
            public static int returnCounter() {
                counter = counter - 1;
                return counter;
        for (int i = 0; i < 15; i++) {
            int p = mycounter.returnCounter();
            if(p == 0)
                System.out.println("I am the 15th user");
    %>That will create an inner class with a static member, which is basically what you're trying to do.
    But note that this inner class is only accessible from this JSP page, and no where else.

  • Passing a variable from jsp to javascript

    Does anyone know of a tag library or something else which allows one to do the equivalent of:
    <jsp2js jspVar="${myJspVar}" jsVar="myJsVar" />where the result would be a javascript assignment statement in the html which sets myJsVar equal to the value of myJspVar. I know there are some simple solutions for things like strings, ints, etc. but I have some multi-dimensional arrays, and would prefer not to have to code out something like this manually.

    I'm pretty sure that won't work for arrays, (much less multi-dimensional ones).
    EDIT: I did a little more looking and it seems that JSON or DWR will be able to suit my needs fairly well.

    Yours,
    Sankar.B

    <% out.println(pageContext.getAttribute("test") %>
    If your tags use a different scope then you'll nee to access them accordingly e.g this will work
    <c:set var="test" value="JSTL" scope="session" />
    <c:out value="${test}" />
    <% out.println(session.getAttribute("test")); %>

  • How to use jstl in weblogic 8.1

    I tried to use JSTL in my jsp file and I add
              <%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/core" %> at the top line. But the server reported
              java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/servlet/jsp/el/VariableResolver
              how to solve this problem?

    WebLogic 8.1 supports JSP 1.2, which doesn't natively implement the JSTL or the expression language. If you download the Jakarta Taglibs implementation of the JSTL (for JSP 1.2, not JSP 2.0), then you can use the JSTL taglib as a normal taglib. Note that this doesn't give you the ability to use the other JSP 2.0 tag features, like using the expression language in body content.
              Make sure that you use the uri value specified in the tld that you're using. I believe the values are different between the JSP 1.2 and JSP 2.0 versions.

  • Is it possible todeclare primitive variable by using JSTL tag

    Hi friends..........
    I have to use jstl tags in my project , so i have to know how to declare primitive variables with jstl tag. Is it possible with <c:set > jstl tag........
    Hope i get the answer...........
    Thanks in advance...............

    JSTL variables are attributes in the page, request, session and application scopes.
    As such, they can only be objects, because you can't store a primitive value as an attribute.
    However you shouldn't need to declare primitive variables. You should hardly need to declare any variables.
    JSTL is not a programming language. It is a language to aid the display of a JSP. Therefore most of its attention is geared towards outputting things, with a much lesser concern on setting them.

  • How can we  use java variable in javascript code on JSP page?

    How can we use java variable in javascript code on JSP page?
    Pls help

    Think about it:
    JSP/Java is executed on the Server and produces HTML+JavaScript.
    Then that HTML+JavaScript is transfered to the client. The client now interpretes the HTML+JavaScript.
    Obviously there's no way to access a Java variable directly from JavaScript.
    What you can do, however, is write out some JavaScript that creates a JavaScript variable containing the value of your Java variable.

  • Need a fast answer... passing javascript variable to jsp page (how to use)

    This test application has 3 frames.
    I'm assigning a value "stuff" to a variable ("testfield1") in a javascript function ("getTest") that exists inside an html frame (testpage1.html)
    Then, I click on the "test submit" hypertext link to pass the value of "testfield1" to the JSP frame (testpage2.jsp) by invoking a function ("getData") in "testpage2".
    In function ("getData"), I am passing the variable "testfield1" as a parameter to the "getData" function in "testpage2".
    In "testpage2" - in the ("getData" function) I try to assign the value of the variable "testfield1" to another variable called "testfld1".
    Then, I try to extract the value of "testfld1" into a variable called "tstfld1" in a JSP scriptlet
    ....I.E. [ String tstfld1  = request.getParameter("testfld1");  ]
    But, the value is apparently not passed successfully, as tstfield1 appears to be "null".
    Can anyone explain what I'm doing incorrectly?
