Using Labview to download a data file

I have a time-critical problem that I'm hoping some of the experts here can help me fix. In the file download_c.vi, I am trying to download a file from a remote computer over a serial port to my Labview control computer. The file works great when the file size is small(500-700KB). Anything over this, and I have to increase the bytes for the visa read to read, and then I lose data. Eventually the file that I will be downloading will be about 600MB. I know that the way the .vi is set up, this will never work for large files, and I throw myself on the mercy of the experts here in the forums for help.
Can anyone take a look at the file that I've attached and show me how i can make this work for large files, more efficiently, and without losing my data.
Advance thanks from a beginner that is getting slightly desperate.

Well, my first question would be - do you have to use serial?
600 MB sounds like an awful lot for a serial connection.
Second, I have never done anything like this, and I'm not sure I understood why you're losing data and where it's being "vanishing". If you're asking the port for X bytes and the timeout is too short, you will lose your data. You might need to play with it.
But let's start with the first question I asked - does it have to be serial?

    JDM.
    As you can see, if you post the same question in multiple threads and multiple boards you just get people to respond for no reason. Brett's answer is almost identical to the one I gave you in the LV board and probably not far off from what you would have gotten from the others in your third thread. If you do post to multiple boards, include a link to the other thread, so people can see which answers you already recieved.

  • Downloading a .DAT file

    Am having a mental lapse here.
    Using DW MX 2004 on XP
    I need to create a link where a user (non computer literate)
    can download a .DAT file to his.her desktop.
    All i get is a "page cannot be found" error page
    Does the file has to be a .exe or .zip file for it to open
    the dialogue box to for user to save or open or am missing
    something here?
    any hints will be appreciated
    Thks

    This is as much a guess as a hint, but I figured that you may
    be able to use
    a "Force Download" script:
    You don't mention what server language you're using... I use
    ASP VBSCRIPT
    and would use something like I've attempted to explain below:
    First of all create a page called "error.asp" - the user will
    be redirected
    to this page if the download fails.
    Then create a page called "forcedownload.asp" in the same
    folder/directory
    Copy and paste the following code to the forcedownload.asp
    page:
    =====>Begin
    <% FileName = (Request.QueryString("FileName"))%>
    <%
    Response.Buffer=true
    On Error Resume Next
    'Create a stream object
    Dim tfm_downloadStream
    Set tfm_downloadStream = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Stream")
    tfm_downloadStream.Type = 1
    tfm_downloadStream.Open
    tfm_downloadStream.LoadFromFile
    Server.Mappath("../../changetofilepath/"&(FileName))
    If Err.number = 0 Then
    Response.Clear
    Response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream"
    Response.AddHeader "Content-Disposition", "attachment;
    filename="&(FileName)
    Response.AddHeader "Content-Transfer-Encoding","binary"
    Response.BinaryWrite tfm_downloadStream.Read
    tfm_downloadStream.Close
    Set tfm_downloadStream = Nothing
    Response.End()
    Else
    tfm_downloadStream.Close
    Set tfm_downloadStream = Nothing
    Response.Redirect("error.asp")
    End If
    %>
    =====>End
    (Make sure you change
    "Server.Mappath("../../changetofilepath/"&(FileName))"
    to reflect the correct file path to the .dat file)
    Then link to forcedownload.asp including the filename in the
    URL under the
    variable "FileName".
    For example, the link would read something like:
    "forcedownload.asp?FileName=MyFile.dat" (of course you would
    change "MyFile"
    according to the correct filename)
    I don't know if there's some "rule" that prevents .dat files
    from working
    with such a script... I've never tried it, but I do use a
    script similar to
    the sample above for a number of different file types to be
    downloaded
    across a range of different websites.

  • Using Migration Assistant to Move Data Files from one Account to New User

    Is it possible or recommended to use Migration Assistant to move data files from an old user account to a new user account on the same volume/hard disk?

    Migration Assitant cannot be used as a simple file transfer utility. MA can transfer an entire Home folder or entire Users folder but not individual files.
    In general files in one user account cannot be moved to another user account as this would violate built-in security measures.
    What you can do is to copy the files to an external device like a hard drive or flash drive. First log in to the old account. Then configure the drive to ignore preferences by Pressing COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and check the Ignore permissions on this volume checkbox at the bottom of the window. Copy your files to the device. Log into the new account. Verify the external drive is still configured to ignore permissions (reset it, if not.) Copy the files from the external device into the Home folder of the new account. I would create a temporary folder for these files. If you still end up without the proper permissions you will need to make modifications that are easier done if all the files are in a single folder.

  • I had no idea Aurora used the same actual App Data file as it's own source, I thought it was just emulating Firefox. I unistalled it and lost everything...

    I had installed Aurora 21.0a2 some time last year and had only used it once. I recently uninstalled it and without knowledge that it used the same exact App Data files as Firefox does, so I removed all data. Now I have lost 100's of bookmarks... I do backup my system often but not my browser data, I had only once made a copy of my Firefox data in August 2013, so I was able to copy and paste that info, which had maybe 35-40% of my bookmarks...
    I had tried Windows Recovery a couple times, it says it wasn't able to restore the data successfully each time. I had also tried Recuva, not really sure if it found the file I was searching for, so I would kindly ask any of the Forum Mods or users who would suggest this method, what "file" exactly should I search for.
    I had been searching for ".default" and ".defaults" files, and any other data relating to Firefox but with no success.
    Do I really have any options of recovery or ....?

    You should never choose to remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.
    You will have to try to recover a recent JSON backup (bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx.json) in the bookmarkbackups folder of that removed Firefox profile folder with Recuva or another undelete utility.

  • Use labview to read an Excel file to some control and add a checkbox for each row

      As the subject say,I need to use labview to read an excel file,and show it in some control,such as mclb;then ,I should add an checkbox for each row,enable me to choose the row i want.What should I do ? Many Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
    to answer your question:
    - read an excel file
    - show it in some control, such as a MCLB
    - add an checkbox for each row
    - choose the row you want
    Hint to make it easier: I wouldn't use checkboxes, as the MCLB already allows to select rows by mouseclick…

  • Download Binary Data File over Serial Port

    I need help setting up a .vi that I can use to download a binary data file from a dos-based system. I will send the system a command, say ascii "DOWNLOAD", and then the remote system will send me a binary data file that will be approx. 600MB. I won't be doing any display/manipulation using labview, I will just need to have the option available in LV to recieve the file.
    Any examples would help a programmer that is new to LV and is getting a little desperate.

    A VISA Read doesn't care whether the data it's getting is binary or ASCII. Where you might have problems is detecting that file transfer is complete. If you have enable termination character set to True in the VISA Configure Serial Port, the read will stop as soon as the termination character is detected. The default termination character is 0xA or a linefeed. You probably don't want to use this. If the file is terminated with a character or string of characters that you now will be unique, you can use this. If there is no unique termination character at the end of the file, the next best thing is to know the file size exactly and set the byte count of VISA Read to that number. Based on file size and baud rate, you would also need to adjust the VISA timeout value. Another way to do this is to transfer the data in pieces and write to a file as soon as the data is received. The reading of data would then be terminated when there are no more bytes available at the serial port. I've attached a LabVIEW 7.0 program that should give an idea of the last approach.

  • Connecting Pumps to PC and Using LabView to collect the data

    Hi There,
    I am a beginner with LabView and I want to use LabView to collect data from a Pump using RS-232.
    Could anybody help me where I need to start from?
    I highly appreciate your help.
    Regards
    Mo

    Hello moizadi,
    the best place to start is definitely the excellent Example Finder built in LabVIEW (Help menu -> Find Examples...). Switch to the Search tab and enter the keyword RS-232. This way you will find nicely documented examples for other common tasks as well. You will find further tutorials and more specific examples by searching for RS-232 or serial communication keywords on NI.com search.
    If you have further questions, please feel free to ask!

  • Using Sothink video downloader, normally video files are save in FLV extension. Now for whatever reason suddenly my video files are save in .ebm extension. "Save file Type As" is peg only on .EBM extension

    Using Sothink video downloader, normally by default my video files are save in FLV extension. Now for whatever reason suddenly my video files are save in .ebm extension & I can't open my video file. "Save file Type As" -to select file extension does not seem to work -

    It's a WEBM video file. My solution was to rename the file to have .webm extension, and play it with the latest VLC Player (2.1, but I think any from 1.1 and upper will solve it too). Just associate .ebm with VLC didn't work. I had to rename the files so VLC knew exactly what that thing was.
    By the way, it worked the same way with a .eam file (!), I just renamed the extension to .webm.

  • Trying to use labview to analyse analog data from a jump on a force plate and measure peak force (at two points, initial land and 2nd land from jump). Also need to mark the time of flight (time off plate).

    Attached is a file of 3 trials of a drop vertical jump activity onto a force plate.  the subject stands on a platform off the force plate, jumps onto the force place and immediately jumps up as if going for a rebound.  I am able to run this data and obtain a waveform graph with no problems.  however, I need to be able to find the initial contact with the force palte, the peak of the drop, the intial time off the force plate (prior to the jump), the return from the jump and finally the second peak (landing from the jump).
    I want to calculate the time of flight ( time off the plate and in the air after the intial drop) to calculate juimp height.
    I had someone write me a mathscript for it and it works well, however, I need to do it without mathscript as I do not understand mathscript (nor Labview!!).
    Please help

    OK, but I'm not understanding what you're asking us to do... Are you asking us to explain what the MathScript code is doing? (It's searching the array for the elements when the values are above or below a threshold.) Are you asking someone to convert the whole MathScript code to LabVIEW (we are not a code-writing service), or you just want to be able to calculate the new stuff you want with LabVIEW?
    In the future, please do not post proprietary file formats. Most people do not have Word, or Word 2007 for that matter. Please post text files or PDFs. Thanks.
