Using long vs. clob datatype with Oracle 8.1.7 and interMedia

I am trying to determine the best datatype to use for a column I
wish to search using the interMedia contains() function. I am
developing a 100% java application using Oracle 8.1.7 on Linux.
I'd prefer to use the standard JDBC API's for PreparedStatement,
and not have to use Oracle extensions if possible. I've
discovered that there are limitations in the support for LOB's
in Oracle's 100% java driver. The PreparedStatement methods
like setAsciiStream() and setCharacterStream() are documented to
have flaws that may result in the corruption of data. I have
also noticed that socket exceptions sometimes occur when a large
amount of data is transferred. If I use the long datatype for
my table column, the setCharacterStream() method seems to
transfer the data correctly. When I try to search this column
using the interMedia contains() function, I get strange
results. If I run my search on Oracle 8.1.6 for Windows, the
results seem to be correct. If I run the same search on Oracle
8.1.7 for Linux, the results are usually incorrect. The same
searches seem to work correctly on both boxes when I change the
column type from long to clob. Using the clob type may not be
an option for me since the standard JDBC API's to transfer data
into internal clob fields are broken, and I may need to stick
with standard JDBC API's. My customer wishes to purchase a
version of Oracle for Linux that will allow us to implement the
search capability he requires. Any guidance would be greatly
appreciated.

I've finally solved it!
I downloaded the following jre from blackdown:
jre118_v3-glibc-2.1.3-DYNMOTIF.tar.bz2
It's the only one that seems to work (and god, have I tried them all!)
I've no idea what the DYNMOTIF means (apart from being something to do with Motif - but you don't have to be a linux guru to work that out ;)) - but, hell, it works.
And after sitting in front of this machine for 3 days trying to deal with Oracle's, frankly PATHETIC install, that's so full of holes and bugs, that's all I care about..
The one bundled with Oracle 8.1.7 doesn't work with Linux redhat 6.2EE.
Don't oracle test their software?
Anyway I'm happy now, and I'm leaving this in case anybody else has the same problem.
Thanks for everyone's help.

  • JDBC Problem with Oracle 8.1.7. and OC4J  Version 2

I use the following connection statement with Oracle 8.1.7. and JDeveloper 3 and Apache Server. It works fine.
    String user = "scott/tiger";
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:oci8:"+user+"@RDL");
The same program does not obtain the connection with JDeveloper 9i, OC4J Version 2 and Oracle 8.1.7. I do not receive any error message, no exception is thrown.
    Please help me.

    Hi Avi,
I had already tried the thin Diriver but after yout help I try again.
With this thin driver, I received a SQLException which helps me.
As usual, there were a lot of different problems. The main one was that my default configuration do not use the jdbc/lib817 main jdbc/lib. There is a classe12.jar in these libs that are apparently different.
Finally, I obtain the connection with the "thin" driver.
    Thank you very much Avi!

  • Using Java Access bridge (Accessibility) with oracle forms 6.0 client

I'm trying to use JAB (java Access bridge ) to capture events in oracle forms 6.0 client .
    I've a Jinitiator 1.1.8 and JRE version 1.4x
I've configured JAB as per the installation guide . However the events don't surface in Java Monkey .
Has anybody encountered similar issue ? what is the solution for the issue ??
Also on one of the forums I read Jinitiator 1.3x and above is automatically recognised by Java Access bridge .
For jinitiator version less than 1.3 manual configuration is required . however I haven;'t been able to find any on the oracle forms KB
Also here is the excerpt from the link http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/accessibility/faqs/index.html
Q: Are there special steps for using Java-based applications with assistive technology?
A: If the Oracle application is written in Java, such as JDeveloper or Oracle Forms (runtime), customers must first install the latest version of Sun's Java Access Bridge. The Java Access Bridge provides the integration with screen readers such as JAWS or SuperNova that support Java. You just download the Access Bridge and install it. Sun's AccessBridge 2.0x recognizes Oracle's JInitiator 1.3x and above so no manual configuration steps are necessary. The Access Bridge is available from: http://java.sun.com/products/accessbridge. At the time this document was written, Access Bridge 2.0.1 is the most current publicly available production release; Oracle recommends upgrading to this version. Sun's AccessBridge is bundled with Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) and can be found in the Java Runtime Engine (JRE). More information for configuring such products is in the respective product documentation, or on http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/accessibility/products/index.html.

ODP.NET requires Oracle Client 9.2 or higher.
You can find additional information about ODP.NET from the FAQ:

    and the ODP.NET homepage:

  • Using the following erp system with oracle

    Dear all,
Does anyone have experience in using the Infor ERP LN with oracle. Are they fully compatible...the reason why I am asking is to make a good arguement why our company needs to oracle when we migrate over to our new ERP system which is infor ERP LN. currently the vendors are trying to have us change to sql sever.

The vendor itself should be able to tell you whether they are certified against Oracle. I would definitely official confirmation from the vendor themselves, else you might find yourself in a lot of trouble if it turns out that it isn't certified and you have major problems.
Saying 'I asked a guy on a forum' wouldn't do anything to help keep your job in that case...

  • Using ADS in UI Shell with multiple task flows (static and dynamic)

    Greetings,
I am developing an application in UI Shell and ADS. Following is description of the Application.
In ThirdPartyComponentArea of the UI Shell I have a task flow with a page fragment(JSFF), which uses ADS (using push mechanism) to get the updates from the server.
Now we have added a Task List in regional area. The list has following items
    1. One of the items in the TaskList open a dynamic task flow in local area.
    2. Another item in the task list opens a static task flow in local area.
The issue is, whenever we click either of the links, ADS framework used by the JSFF on the ThirdPartyComponentArea stops working (stops receiving data from ADS and stopActiveData method is invoked by the framework).
It seems that the task flow initiating in Local Area is causing the ADS framework in other taskflow to end.
I have read through the documentation, Book - "Oracle Fusion Developer Guide - Building Rich Internet Applications with Oracle ADF Business Components and Oracle ADF Faces" and other examples/blogs.
From my understanding it seems that ActiveDataManager and EventManager are stopping in this use-case.
From my understanding opening the task flow in local area is not changing any properties or HTML view of the task flow in ThirdPartComponentArea. Then, why such a behaviour is observed when using ADS in such cases? Is this supported ADS?
Are such use-cases supported by ADS. From my understanding of these documents it seems they are supported.
If these use-cases are supported but require some tweaking/workaround in the current flow/logic then also please guide me on it.
Please let me know if these are not supported by ADS.
    Thanks,
    PShah

  • ORA-09100 specified length too long for its datatype with Usage Tracking.

    Hello Everyone,
I'm getting an (ORA-09100 specified length too long for its datatype) (a sample error is provided below) when viewing the "Long-Running Queries" from the default Usage Tracking Dashboard. I've isolated the problem to the logical column "Logical SQL" corresponding to the physical column "QUERY_TEXT" in the table S_NQ_ACCT. Everything else is working correctly. The logical column "Logical SQL" is configured as a VARCHAR of length 1024 and the physical column "QUERY_TEXT" is configured as a VARCHAR2 of length 1024 bytes in an Oracle 11g database. Both are the default configurations and were not changed.
In the the table S_NQ_ACCT we do have record entries in the field "QUERY_TEXT" that are of length 1024 characters. I've tried various configuration such as increasing the the number of bytes or removing any special character but without any sucess. Currently, my only possible workaround is reducing the "Query_Text" data entries to roughly 700 characters. This makes the error go away. Additional point my character set to WE8ISO8859P15.
    - Any suggestions?
    - Has anyone else ever had this problem?
    - Is this potentially an issue with the ODBC drive? If so, why would ODBC not truncate the field length?
    - What is the maximum length supported by BI, ODBC?
Thanks in advance for everyones help.
    Regards,
    FBELL

I beleieve I have found the issue for at least one report.
We have views in our production environment that call materialized views on another database via db link. They are generated nightly to reduce load for day-old reporting purposes on the Production server.
I have found that the report in question uses a view with PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION. In the remote database, this is a VARCHAR2(1995 Bytes) column. However, when we create a view in our Production environment that simply calls this materialized view, it moves the length to VARCHAR2(4000).
The oddest thing is that the longest string stored in the MV for that column is 71 characters long.
I may be missing something here.... But the view that Discoverer created on the APPS side also has a column length for the PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION column of VARCHAR2(4000) and running the report manually returns results less than that - is this a possible bug?

  • CLOB Datatype with JDBC Adapter

    Hi,
we try to fill a Clob Datatype to JDBC Database.
We try 2 ways with the JDBC Adapter:
action="SQL_DML" with an SQL Statment and $placeholders$
But how can i say the key element that it is a CLOB type?
He used this a VARCHAR and there a not more than 4k Chars allowed.
second way is action="EXECUTE" to call a Stored Procedure, but there we got the error that CLOB type is an Unsupported feature.
    Any Idea?

    Ok i will check this...
But i'm right when i say that the only way to fill CLOB Type is to use a Stored Procedure ?
or is there any possibility to do this with action="SQL_DML" ?

  • Entity Clob field with Oracle Generic Domain

Is it possible to use a Clob database column with an Entity Object, using Oracle Generic Domain, instead of Oracle Domain ? I know Oracle Domain has a ClobDomain object, but our application requires the usage of Oracle Generic domain, which does not have any clob object type.
    Thanks a lot.

If you have to use Oracle9i Database Release 2 (9.2.0), try CTX_DOC.IFILTER or CTX_DOC.FILTER.
    CTX_DOC.IFILTER doesn't need CONTEXT index.
CTX_DOC.FILTER needs CONTEXT index, but it can be created with NOPOPULATE option.
If you use CTX_DOC.IFILTER, you should also check "Plain Text Indexing and the INSO_FILTER" in "Oracle Text Reference 9i Release 2".

I know there was a problem in 6i where you would get a crash if your query returned more than {Max Length} characters of the field representing the CLOB column.
