Using MIDI files

I found some MIDI files on the web. It's background music to play/practice over. I'd like to import them into GB somehow, so I can play guitar over them and record the it. Is there any way to do this? I looked at Quicktime Pro as far as coverting goes, but didn't see a definitive answer.
Thanks, and sorry if this is posted elsewhere, didn't see it specifically mentioned.

The program converted the original MIDI file to a
series of aiffs,
Just so you know, it didn't really convert the file to AIFFs, it just set the FileType to AIFF to fool GB into thinking that's what they were. They really are still MIDI files, GB version 1 just didn't support the MIDI fileType. And as CD mentinoed, GB2 does handle MIDI files directly, splitting up the various instruments into separate tracks
I am going to play all afternoon!
Good deal, have fun --Hang

  • Using MIDI files - plugins

    Hi, new to CS4 but seem to be doing quite well learning on my
    own. I have created a website and trying to put simple midi files
    on for music. It works for me but when others refresh their page
    only one of the pages plays music. When testing the website it says
    can't find plugin. The instructions say go to action and behavior
    tabs but when I go there I find nothing. I have read some
    instructions and not sure about all of ActiveX so if you can lend a
    hand it would be greatly appreciated.

    This means that your system is set up to play midi files in a
    web page, but others aren't. You can't be sure that visitors will
    be able to play certain media types.

    What instructions are you talking about that talk about going
    to the behaviors?
    I've never had a need to add a midi file to a page, but a
    quick Google search returned this page, perhaps it will help:
    http://www.boutell.com/newfaq/creating/midi.html
    Also, if there is not a very specific reason to be using midi
    files, then perhaps you'd want to generate MP3 files instead, as
    those tend to be easier to work with, and you can get a Flash
    player front end to be able to play/pause/stop and adjust volume.
    Maybe start out here:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=flash+mp3+player
    And maybe take a look at some of the Dreamweaver extensions
    that seem to support MP3 files (shortened URL of adobe.com/exchange
    with a search in the DW exchange for mp3):
    http://tinyurl.com/dgkj8a
    And maybe even take a look at SoundManager2 a JavaScript (and
    Flash) solution that can play sounds

  • Can't use .mid file with Logic Pro 9

    I've been given a .mid file from someone I know but I'm not having any success trying to access the file in Logic.
    The file should just contain a piano piece he had written.
    When I first downloaded the file it automatically opened with QuickTime Player. I closed this then tried various ways of getting it into Logic. Firstly I went to File > Open, and chose the .mid file. This was the result:
    "Damaged project or not a Logic Pro project!
    "Search for fragments?
    "Damaged projects might create problems and crashes!"
    'Search' or 'Cancel'
    When I click 'Search' I'm told:
    "Read error!
    "This is not a Logic Pro project!
    "No tracks found"
    'Continue'
    So, is the file empty (no tracks found)?
    Or, because it was not created in Logic, it can't be opened in Logic. (I think he is using a PC, not confirmed yet - I also don't know what DAW he's using, yet)
    That's ridiculous though, I thought MIDI was a universal language?
    I also tried dragging the file straight into a Logic project, which tells me:
    "No tracks found"
    Can someone please give me a little hand!? Thank you

    Two ideas, have your friend check and make sure the mid file plays on his/her system.
    and/or
    If the mid file checks out good on his/her system have them compress (ZIP) the file and resend as it could have become corrupted during transfer. It can happen.
    Your description of the file (zero length) sounds like it missed the last few bytes.

    Can somebody give me a quick example of how to play a midi file (a local file) in an applet?
    Here's what I'm trying (was reading tutorials):
    Sequence music;
    try {
              music = MidiSystem.getSequence(new File("Futurama.mid"));
              // Create a sequencer for the sequence
    Sequencer sequencer = MidiSystem.getSequencer();
    sequencer.open();
    sequencer.setSequence(music);
         } catch (IOException e) {
    } catch (InvalidMidiDataException e) {
    } catch (MidiUnavailableException e) {
    But it's not working...
    Any help would be appriciated.

    Here's the Java Tutorial page with an applet that plays various sounds, including midi:

  • Error -208 when trying to play midi files

    hey, i used to be able to open midi files no problem, then within the last week or two when I try to open them I get error -208. I know the files aren't corrupt, so I'm wondering why I'm now getting this file error.

    This is a user to user forum. If you know it is a Quicktime bug, you should report this using the Feedback link (which will get seen by Apple personnel).
    I said I knew for certain that it's NOT corrupted files (because they work fine everywhere else, other programs, my synth, etc.), and I'm only assuming it's a QT bug, because that's what I'm assuming plays them, and the error window shows the QT logo, and says it's a "movie that can't be opened"!
    And I just now sent feedback to Apple, thanks for the link...
    I already said I don't use midi files: so what application should open them? Or do you think it is just QT getting the file type wrong?
    What has happened between them opening OK and the problem? What else has been installed?
    Yes QT is getting the file type wrong, and QT is what I have set to play them, and it does, 70% of the time, no idea why some just won't play...
    The only new thing are the newest updates, as they come down the pike, I don't remember exactly when this began, but it was fairly recently. It could be tied to the QT update...

  • Playing MIDI files through safari browser

    I have been using an online web app called "piano player plus" that uses MIDI files to teach the piano and the app works for pcs using some kind of virtual synth built into windows called "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth"... however there doesn't seem to be a way to integrate the application with safari.
    If there is a way I can just route the midi information to go to a synth that would be amazing. Coz I know a lot of mac users are having the same problem. Its one of those rare occasions where pcs are easier than macs.
    I don't know what the IAC bus does but could that work?
    Thanks

    Hi
    the issue is, those pages use the bgsound tag to play the midi files, and only Internet Explorer supports it. The file is perfectly playable in safari or any browser, or quicktime player.
    eg http://www.hearandplay.com/s05.mid (this will likely download automatically, due to the way their server is configured)
    Short of seeing if the ancient & unsupported & insecure IE5 will run on your mac, assuming you can find a download ( don't bother looking at Microsoft ), you're stuck. apart from checking the source code of each page & downloading each midi file to play in Quicktime... better finding another online tutor site, I'd think; sorry.

  • How can I convert a .m4r file to a .mid file?

    How can I convert a .m4r file to a .mid file?
    I have a m4r file that I'd like to use on my Motorola Razor phone. It uses .mid files.
    TIA
    -Apple //GS

    Im no tech expert, but .m4r is the file for song ringtones on the iPhone right? Like the ones from iTunes that you make?
    If so, im pretty sure that can't be converted to MIDI...long tech story short, a MIDI isnt exactly a straight up audio file like a m4r, or mp3, etc. is. To dumb it down (since I dont even know the technical terms), MIDIs have almost like an internal sound bank, that reads the music, almost like sheet music data.
    m4r and other audio files, are just plain audio files, and you can go from MIDI to mp3 for example, but not mp3 to MIDI.

  • N900 and mid-files

    Why N900 doesn't play mid-files! Nokia, please, make this phone play mid-files! I really need this player! Nokia 6233 plays mid-files, why you have taken off this from new phone??????

    i dunno about you guys, but i havent used midi files since... ever XD
    www.dvdvideosoft.com have some free audio converters and video converters which are useful for the n900.
    on the topic of free converteres, if you want something that can simply convert videos to high quality mp4s that matches the n900's screen resolution, download the free video to ipod converter from dvdvideosoft. then copy the txt file ive attached to this post into the program's profiles folder and change the extension from '.txt' to '.xml'. then just run the program, choose iphone as the device, and you'll see all the profiles ive created for the n900.
    the program is good for quick conversions and accepts a fair few file formats. but some things it doesnt do are;
    image stretch - the program maintains the source video's aspect ratio
    hardcode subs - if the source is an mkv, sub files will not be hardcoded
    the files using my profile are rather large because i prefer quality over portability. we do have 32+gigs of storage after all!

  • IPhoto Slideshow won't use my midi files

    I have a Roland keyboard that will record to midi files. When I record a song and import it into iTunes, it will play fine. It I try to use it as background music in an iPhoto 09 slideshow, it shows up in the playlist, plays fine when 'tested', but when the slideshow is run, it is silent. I'm a new MAC user (a convert from PCs) and haven't run into any other significant problems until this one. Been working on it for about 3 days and am about to pull out my hair. Any ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I'm not familiar with midi files but have you tried converting them to mp3s in iTunes and using them?

  • Playing two midi files at once using threads?

    Hi all, I have the following simple code here which plays a midi file, but I'm not sure how to use threads to play two midi files at once:
    import org.jfugue.*;
    import javax.sound.midi.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class MidiPlayer {
    public static void main (String [] args) {
    try {
    Player player = new Player();
    player.playMidiDirectly(new File("C:\\Sounds\\bach.mid"));
    } catch (IOException e) {
    } catch (InvalidMidiDataException e) {
    Is there a way to use a thread for this class so that in another class I can call 'start' twice and have the parameters be the midi file locations (e.g. "C:\\Sounds\\bach.mid" & "C:\\Sounds\\bach2.mid").
    Any kind of help would be great, thank you!

    Something like the below.
    import org.jfugue.*;
    import javax.sound.midi.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class MidiPlayer {
    public static void main (String [] args) {
    String fileName = "c:\\Sounds\\bach.mid";
    Thread t1 = new Thread(new MyRunable(fileName));
    t1.start();
    String fileName2 = "c:\\Sounds\\bach2.mid";
    Thread t2 = new Thread(new MyRunable(fileName2));
    t2.start();
    } // main
    class MyRunnable implements Runnable {
    private String fileName
    public MyRunnable( String fileName) {
      this.fileName = fileName;
       public void run() {
         Player player = new Player();
        player.playMidiDirectly(new File(fileName));

  • Purchasing MIDI files for use in GB

    Hello,
    Can anyone recommend a web site where song files without vocals can be obtained for use in garageband? I have found some files from friends and actually copied some from karaoke cd's, but I have heard you can purchase files from the internet.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Eli
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    You can find almost any popular tune as a Midi file for free on the Net, using Midi search engines like www.musicrobot.com/. You can import these into GB, but you by hand since GB doesn't support the General Midi standard.
    And be warned: The quality of these amateur renditions varies a lot.
    (Disclaimer: There might also legal issues involved in this kind of sharing, but it seems like the music companies are tolerating it as long as it's not for profit.)

  • Using a standard midi file, how do I get this to an output port for playing it via midi-cable on an extern keyboard?

    Using a standard midi file, how do I get this to an output port for playing it on an extern midi-keyboard?

    Hi
    Create 1 or more External Instrument tracks as required.
    You could send the MIDIFile to a track set to "All" MIDI channels, or if needed, you could split the file by channel and create indivisual tracks for each.

  • MIDI files - opening vs importing and using templates

    I think I'm out of luck on this one, but I thought I'd put it out there anyway. I spent all morning building a new template with 50+ buses for internal recording of audio (Thank You APPLE!).
    I would like to be able to open MIDI files using that template. If I import, only the regions are imported not the tempo map, markers etc. If I open, then I can't have it use my template because it opens in an empty file.
    I've gone into the global preferences and assigned my template as the default template and still no love. Any thoughts?

    I can import the environment but all of the routing is gone. I've got like 50 buses or something and all of my tracks in the arrange are gone as well. No way to import those I imagine. It'll take me only like 10-15 mins to load them all up again, but still thats 1-150 mins each time. Thats why I built a template to begin with, to avoid routing stuff and inserting tracks over and over.
    We need an update on this one stat
