Using other classes in jsp

hi all.
in my jsp i would like to use another class which i created.
here's what im trying to do:MyUtils.getValue(request.getParameter("id"));i'm getting: MyUtils cannot be resolved
in MyUtils the method getValue is static.
where should i put this class in order for my jsp to know it?
thanks.

Did you include a page directive with an import for the package? You need something like:
<%@ page  import="MyUtilsPackage.*" %>The package containing the class should be placed in the WEB-INF\classes directory. For example if the package name is MyUtilsPackage, you'll need a MyUtilsPackage directory under classes and then put the class into the MyUtilsPackage directory.

  • Using java class from JSP page

    I have a class that connects to the database and return the result in form of array of objects, now I wrote a tester and I was able to print the result on the console but when it came to JSP how can I use this class I am a bit confused, how can I declare an array of objects and save the result that comes from the class method
    note: my class is not a bean it is a service class that contain methods to retreive different information from the database.
    I would apritiate any help but please make it in sequence for example declaring an array to hold the result then call the method that returns the array of objects..etc
    please help, I am really confused and don't know what to write
    thank you

    You can access a class in the same way as a bean, after all a bean is just a class that follows a set of rules.
    You need to put your classes in packages to access them.
    I have 2 packages, params and DTO. I set the class that returns the Data Transfer Object, or array of objects up as I would a bean
    <jsp:useBean id="DTO" scope="request" class="params.DTO" />
    I think you skip the above declaration and access it directly in code using
    params.DTO();
    but setting it up as I would a bean allows me to simply use
    DTO();
    DTO is the class that passes back the array of objects.
    Objects themselves I have in a seperate package, also called DTO (sorry if this is confusing, made sense at the time :-) ) You dont need them in seperate packages, just helped me keep DTO objects seperate from business logic classes......
    Now before I use params.DTO() I declare a variable of the Object type DTO() returns
    <%! DTO.workSheet[] ws; %>
    So, ws is the object type that will be returned by params.DTO()
    Then to get my array of objects back from params.DTO() :-
    ws = DTO.workSheet(day);
    or if you dont like the bean declaration
    ws = params.DTO.workSheet(day);
    You need to put your packages under WEB-INF/Classes when using Tomcat
    So I have
    Tomcat 5.0\webapps\myApplication\WEB-INF\classes\params
    Tomcat 5.0\webapps\myApplication\WEB-INF\classes\DTO
    Under which reside the classes

  • How to use cusom classes in jsp

    Dear all,
    Would anyone teach me how to import and use my custom classes
    in my jsp? I've been unable to import the classes that reside in the same
    directory as the jsp file. Some detailed explanation with sample folder structure
    will be much appreciated.

    Thanks for the response.
    First, I've not yet touched Java beans. Don't yet know how to create them.
    Hence what I'm trying to do now is write an ordinary Java class and import it into
    the jsp via page directive.
    After your suggestion, I created the following folder structure in Tomcat5.
    webapps/mainalee_jsp/WEB-INF/
    WEB-INF/classes
    WEB-INF/lib
    WEB-INF/web.xml
    I've a JSP file, jsp1.jsp in the path: webapps/mainalee_jsp
    I've a java class, testclass.class, in the path: webapps/mainalee_jsp/WEB-INF/classes
    The codes are as follows:
    testclass.java:
    package mainalee_jsp;
    class testclass {
         int age;
         String name;
    public void testclass (int x, String y){
         age =x;     name=y;
    public String getName(){
         return name;
    public int getAge(){
         return age;
    jsp1.jsp:
    <%@ page import="mainalee_jsp.*" %>
    <%
    testclass tc = new testclass(27,"XYZ");
    out.println(tc.age);
    out.println("<br>");
    out.println(tc.name);
    %>
    web.xml:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
    <!DOCTYPE web-app
    PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.3//EN"
    "http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-app_2_3.dtd">
    <web-app>
    </web-app>
    When the jsp is called, Tomcat says that package mainalee_jsp doesn't exist.
    How can I make this program work? Thanks for the help to JSP newbie.

  • Using java classes in jsp

    hi everybody
    I'm using Apache Tomcat 5.5.7 and I want to develop very very simple jsp-files.
    I have a java class file called MyClass.
    When I start the jsp file with the code line
    MyClass class = new MyClass();
    I get this error: MyClass cannot be resolved or is not a type
    As I know the hierachy must be the following:
    ProjectRoot/WEB-INF/classes/MyClass.class
    ProjectRoot/start.jsp
    In the java class the Constructor is empty... so I cannot see why this should make a problem. I also tried to put the class file into a package and import the package. I had the same error then.
    I read something about the web.xml file which should be in the WEB-INF directory.
    will this help me... and if yes, what do I need to write into it?
    If I did any mistake I would be happy if somebody could give me a hint.
    Cheers
    alex

    1 - The class needs to be in a package. eg com.mypackage.MyClass. This file lives in /WEB-INF/classes/com/mypackage/MyClass.class
    2 - in your jsp you include the line
    <%@ page import="com.mypackage.MyClass" %>
    <%
    MyClass myClass = new MyClass();
    %>
    3 - Also note that "class" is a reserved word in java, and can not be used as a variable identifier.
    4 - Yes you most probably should have a web.xml file in the WEB-INF directory.
    Look under the webbapps/ROOT/WEB-INF for a basic example.

  • How to use java class in jsp page of JSPProvider?

    Hello everybody.
    I created simple JSPProvider channel with portal amconsole and named it "jspprov1". Then I created "jspprov"1 directory under "/ets/opt/SUNWps/desktop/sampleportal". I put "index.jsp" in it. And it worked until I add this line into "index.jsp": <% @page import="jspprov1package.aclass1" %>. Then I created directory "jspprov1package" under "/ets/opt/SUNWps/desktop/classes" and put "aclass1.class" into it and into "/ets/opt/SUNWps/desktop/classes" itself. I created "aclass1.class" on the other machine (with no installed portal) in j2sdk1.4.1_02: "javac aclass1.java". The text of this class is simple:
    "package jspprov1package;
    public class aclass1{
    public int int_field = 10;
    But the page still don't work. It writes on the portal desktop "ERROR: Content is not available".
    Does anybody know why this happened?

    Sorry, there were mistakes in jsp page and java files.
    I maked the channel "show exceptions" and found them out.

  • Regarding Vector classes in JSP

    Hello,
    Where we actually use the vector classes in jsp page.Is there any necessary to use Vector classes in jsp programs instead of database.Or is there any conditions like here we have use vector instead of DataBase.

    JSP pages are part of the "view" layer in the MVC design pattern.
    As such, it is advisable to seperate them from the model/control layer. For this reason, database code in a JSP page is undesirable.
    The controller normally queries the model, places the results into a collection/vector, makes them available to the jsp page. All the jsp page knows is that it gets the collection - nothing about where it came from or how the model is accessed.
    It is not NECESSARY to do so. You can easily put SQL statements, and scriptlets into your JSP pages. But keeping that stuff out makes for more easily understood and maintainable web applications.

  • Why do we intialize other classes in constructor ????

    Please see the question below:
    class MThread extends Thread {
    private Abc mfact = null;
    private Xyz mo = null;
    private Pro sts = null;
    * Constructor.
    public MThread(Abc mfact, Xyz mo ) { *// do i have to pass Pro here from calling method so that i can initialize in constructor in order to use its method like record ???*
    this.mfact = mfact;
    this.mo = mo;
    public somemethod() {
    sts.record();
    public void somemethod1() {
    mo.create();
    ***************************************************Another Class******************************************************
    public class Xyz{
    // Some code here
    // this class calls Mthread and creates 10 such Threads sth like
    for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) {
    mThreads[i] = new MThread(mfact, mo;
    ***********Another Class ****************
    public class Pro {
    // some code
    public synchronized record() {
    rat ++;
    Explanation :
    Xyz calls Mthread 10 times to create such threads.
    Mthread has method that class Pro for stats recording
    Mthread also uses other class files to do some functioning of its own.
    Question:
    Please see the question in the constructor of Mthread ??
    for using method like record in Pro. do i have to initialize that in the constructor of Mthread ??
    because other class like Abc initializes itself in the construtor??
    Why do we have to initialize some class in constructor ?? I don't get it ?? Also when i press F3 (Open declaration ) on record call in somemethod ()
    .. it properly opens the file of class Pro and points to my sychronized method in that class ??
    CONFUSED... Please help ..

    thats right..so actually my question was do i need to change the requiremensts of the constructor so i can pass in the value of class Pro from the calling method.
    Do i need to do that. is that compulsory to use one of its methods
    ThanksYes, somehow you have to get visibility to your object that you want to use. If it's not passed in, then you have to have it in some global context with reference to where you want to use it.
    class myClass{
      A a;
      B b;
      C c;
      myClass(A a, B b, C c){
        this.a = a;
        this.b = b;
        this.c = c;
      public void myMethod(){
        c.doSomething(a, b);
    // This can be done since a and b are supplied as arguments to the constructor
    // but also consider this:
    class myClass{
      A a;
      B b;
      C c;
      myClass(A a, B b){
        this.a = a;
        this.b = b;
        c = new C();
      public void myMethod(){
        c.doSomething(a, b);
    //this will also work but c is a local variable
    //also consider this:
    class myOuterClass{
      A a;
      B b;
      C c;
      myOuterClass(){
        a = new A();
        b = new B();
        c = new C();
        //do stuff
      public void someStuff(){
        myInnerClass p = new myInnerClass(a, b);
        p.myMethod();  //this will also work since c is defined in myOuterClass
      class myInnerClass{
        A a;
        B b;
        myInnerClass(A a, B b){
          this.a = a;
          this.b = b;
        public void myMethod(){
          c.doSomething(a, b);
    }Note: this example is supplied off the top of my head without being tried in my IDE, but should show the concepts even if my fat fingers have hit the wrong keys.

  • Compiler can't find other classes

    I've got this bad problem that's been bugging me all weekend, and I can't work out how to fix it. A few months ago I was able to write classes that use other classes I've defined no problem. I just started using my compiler again, and now when I want to use different classes I've written, the compiler says that it can't find the other class:
    D:\uni\2005 Sem2\cse12ipj\assignment\HabitatModule.java:12: cannot find symbol
    symbol: class Module
    public class HabitatModule extends Module
    ^
    1 error
    Tool completed with exit code 1
    I've compiled the Module class and it doesn't have any errors. I'm guessing that there's something wrong with the classpath variable. Is that right? I'm using java 5.0.

    This is the base class. It compiles fine.
    public abstract class Module
    private char type;
    private String axisCode;
    private Module moduleList;
    abstract int getSpareCapacity();
    When I compile this next class, the compiler on my PC says that the class Module can't be found:
    D:\uni\2005 Sem2\cse12ipj\assignment\Habitat.java:12: cannot find symbol
    symbol: class Module
    public class Habitat extends Module
    ^
    1 error
    Tool completed with exit code 1
    public class Habitat extends Module
    private class Person
    private String name;
    private int id;
    private String speciality;
    private int maxPeople;
    private int nrPeople;
    private char subType;
    private Person personList;
    private String purpose;
    public Habitat(int maxPeople, char subType, String purpose)
    this.maxPeople = maxPeople;
    nrPeople = 0;
    this.subType = subType;
    this.purpose = purpose;
    public int getSpareCapacity()
    return maxPeople - nrPeople;
    If I compile it on any other machine, it's fine. I was looking on the web, and the CLASSPATH doesn't have to be changed for classes in the same directory.

  • Xalan XML thru Web Start - how to include other classes

    Hello developers,
    I have an JAVA Swing application which needs an xml output, it creates an XML file which has to be stored in the clients hard drive. Though i have finished it, the application runs perfectly in the swing, if i deploy it using Java Webstart, the classes are not found,
    The classes for xercers and xalan or not understood by webstart, how do i include these classes too. Could any1 throw some light on how to use other classes too in webstart applications.
    thanks,
    Prashant.

    Depends on the version of the JRE you are supporting. If you are using 1.4 you should be able to get it to work with the classes shipped with it.
    If you really want to use the Xerces parser you will have to include the following in your .jnlp file.
    <jar href="xerces.jar" download="eager"/>
    <property name="javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory" value="org.apache.xerces.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl"/>
    This forces the runtime to use Xerces instead of a locally available XML parser.

  • Using normal classes in a JSP

    I have written a library of classes for use in a standard application. In a completely separate project I need to use these classes in a JSP page. Under %tomcat/webapps/myproject is the JSP file. Where do I place the "normal" class files and how do I reference them in the JSP page? Do I need to import them or add them to the classpath and should they be pre-compiled ?
    All help most appreciated
    Thanks
    Bob

    Where do I place the "normal" class files and how do
    I reference them in the JSP page?Just like you use any other class in a JSP.
    Do I need to import them or add them to the classpath and should they be pre-compiled ?Yes, yes and yes. The first thing is something you need to do for your stuff to compile (technically, you don't need to do it, but it's better than always using the fully qualified class names in the code). The second is something the servlet container will do for you when you deploy your WAR. The this is something you need to do with classes anyway. You don't need to do it for JSPs because the container will do it later, but that's all the difference there is.

  • Can I use any Class in a Use Bean Tag of a JSP

    I have tried to modify the existing EditForm.java file and created a new Class File which changes the presentation(render method)in the Edit Form.
    can I use the new class as a Bean in the use bean tag of a JSP.

    You can use any class as part of the useBean tag. If you want to add your class to the list of available webbeans, you can add it to <jdev dir>\teamplates\webbeans.xml.

    }I read in one blog (actually - the only page which was returned by yahoo - so - this should be very rare error!!!) to try to use Sun server's verifier.bat - and - it reported 0 errors and 0 warning. Build was succesfull as well and also - deployment was without errors - but - above mentioned error appeared during the automatic compilation of jsp pages/servlet when newly deployed jsps are first accessed from remote browser.
    So - is it possible, please, to receive some advice - what to do further? I feel that my invoice.jsp page can be with errors, - however - the original welcomeJSF.jsp should be working without errors even the erronwous JFS jsp page is added to web application.
    Thans for any adice or hint in advance!!!

    OK - I have made 'clean and build main project' from NB menu and the deployed the resulting *.war and the error messages have disappeared... So - it seems to be bug...
