Using procedures

I've got a problem. I have to make a procedure that will take a name as an input and then output the quaterly average sales for that customer. The customer name is in a seperate file to the sales details but these are linked by the customer_id. My code so far is below, its pretty simple but the problem is it never executes right and i don't get mush of an error response from the system.
create or replace procedure ORDER_AVG( aname IN VARCHAR2 )
as
begin
SELECT c.name CUSTOMER,
AVG(DECODE(TO_CHAR(order_date, 'Q'), 1, s.total, NULL)) qtr_1,
AVG(DECODE(TO_CHAR(order_date, 'Q'), 2, s.total, NULL)) qtr_2,
AVG(DECODE(TO_CHAR(order_date, 'Q'), 3, s.total, NULL)) qtr_3,
AVG(DECODE(TO_CHAR(order_date, 'Q'), 4, s.total, NULL)) qtr_4
from sales_order s, customer c
where c.name = 'aname' AND c.customer_id = s.customer_id
group by c.name;
end;

create or replace procedure ORDER_AVG( aname IN
VARCHAR2 )
as
begin
SELECT c.name CUSTOMER,
AVG(DECODE(TO_CHAR(order_date, 'Q'), 1,
'), 1, s.total, NULL)) qtr_1,
AVG(DECODE(TO_CHAR(order_date, 'Q'), 2,
'), 2, s.total, NULL)) qtr_2,
AVG(DECODE(TO_CHAR(order_date, 'Q'), 3,
'), 3, s.total, NULL)) qtr_3,
AVG(DECODE(TO_CHAR(order_date, 'Q'), 4,
'), 4, s.total, NULL)) qtr_4
from sales_order s, customer c
where c.name = 'aname' AND c.customer_id =
r_id = s.customer_id
group by c.name;
end;First of all, in a Procedure or Function body, you can not use the Select Statement like above. You shold have Select...INTO..FROM..WHERE(optional) instead.
Now let me try the following using your Code:
create or replace procedure ORDER_AVG( aname IN OUT VARCHAR2,
p_qtr1 OUT NUMBER, p_qtr2 OUT NUMBER, p_qtr3 OUT NUMBER, p_qtr4 OUT NUMBER )
as
begin
  SELECT c.name CUSTOMER,
  AVG(DECODE(TO_CHAR(order_date, 'Q'), 1,
'), 1, s.total, NULL)) qtr_1,
AVG(DECODE(TO_CHAR(order_date, 'Q'), 2,
'), 2, s.total, NULL)) qtr_2,
AVG(DECODE(TO_CHAR(order_date, 'Q'), 3,
'), 3, s.total, NULL)) qtr_3,
AVG(DECODE(TO_CHAR(order_date, 'Q'), 4,
'), 4, s.total, NULL)) qtr_4
INTO aname, p_qtr1, p_qtr2, p_qtr3, p_qtr4
       from sales_order s, customer c
where c.name = 'aname' AND c.customer_id =
r_id = s.customer_id
group by c.name;
end;Now use these OUT parameter values outside the procedure. Also don't use where cname = 'ename', use rather where cname = ename
Thanks

    Hi,
    You can very well use DBMS_SQL Package supplied by Oracle for doing this.
    Search for DBMS_SQL in OTN. You will get all info regarding this.

  • Using Procedure in SQL statement

    Dear Sir,
    As you know, I can use any function in SQL statement. For example:
    SELECT systimestamp,
    Function_Name(variable1, variable2,...)
    FROM anytable;
    So the previous function could only retrieve one value -as functions concepts-. Anyhow, Can I, in someway, use Procedure that take multiple in parameters and return multiple out parameters in SQL statement.
    Thank you in advance.

    Sir,
    I got a way in order to use the benefit of procedure in function. It's trough your idea in using TYPE OBJECT as the following:
    ===================================================================
    create or replace type Missed_Txn_type AS OBJECT
    (Txn_Timestamp_obj timestamp,
    Txn_Type_Obj Number(12));
    ===================================================================
    Then I created function and used this type as returned value:
    FUNCTION Get_Shift_Missed_Txn_Obj(F_Date_In     Date,
                        F_Time_In Timestamp,
                        F_Employee_Id     number)
    RETURN Missed_Txn_type;
    The issue is: I want send the variables of the function through SELECT statement which they come from another table like:
    SELECT
    EMP.ID,
    sd.date_value,
    shf.Time_In,
    T.OBJ.Txn_Timestamp_obj,
    T.OBJ.Txn_Type_Obj
    FROM
    EMPLOYEE EMP,
    Stored_Date SD,
    Shifts shf,
    (select Get_Shift_Missed_Txn_Obj(sd.date_value,
    shf.time_in,
    EMP.Id) OBJ from dual) T
    WHERE
    [where clause]
    But the previous statement returned an error shows that it couldn't determine the (EMP.ID, shf.time_in, sd.date_value...)...
    And the same if I use it in the select list!
    So sir, there is any way in order to solve this issue?
    Thank you in advance.

  • Can't use procedure in the .rdl file.

    Hi experts,
    I created a simple River project, and I can active the project successfully.
    But when i added some codes to call a procedure, then i can't active the rdl file.
    This is the code I used to call a procedure:
    action callExternalProc2() : DecimalFloat[]
          let x  = sap.hana.catalog.RIVERPRJ.MY_PROCEDURE_TEST3();
          return x;
    The error message met when active the project is:
    A transaction rollback may have left the object in an inconsistent state.
    exception 40183:
    repository/base/activation/activator.cpp:884
    Transaction rollback detected. Activation failed.
    When i commented the above codes, the activation will be successful.
    And the procedure can execute in SQL console.
    Can you give me some suggestions?

    Hi Omer,
    I tried to create my stored procedure in another schema(owned by my user), but I still can't active the rdl file.
    Also, I can't execute the following sql statement using my user or the system user:
           set schema "RIVERPRJ";
           grant execute on MY_PROCEDURE_TEST3 to _SYS_REPO with grant option;
    The error message is:
         Could not execute 'grant execute on MY_PROCEDURE_TEST3 to _SYS_REPO with grant option' in 10 ms 659 µs .
         SAP DBTech JDBC: [258] (at 17): insufficient privilege: Not authorized to grant the privilege on the procedure: line 1 col 18 (at pos 17)
    If I active the rdl file, the error message is as follows:
    In the procedure, if I do some queries from the tables created by the rdl, it did not work, but it works if I do some queries from the tables which were not created by the rdl file.
    I think this maybe the reason for the error message "A transaction rollback may have left the object in an inconsistent state." .
    In my opinion, I think we can not use a stored procedure that do some queries from tables created by the rdl entities.
    Because create the entity and call the procedure at the same time may left the object in an inconsistent state.
    Put the queries in an action is ok, but the river can not support some key words like "lag over",.
    So i am trying to put these things in a procedure and call it in the action.
    If  we can't use procedure, how could I use some sql key words like "lag over"?
    Could you give me some suggestions?
    Thanks very much for your help.
    Regards
    Eric

  • Why I Can't use procedure in select statement

    Why I Can't use procedure in select statement

    We can use function in select statement but we couldn't use procedure with one out parameters in select statement... You can use Function because they are designed for this but procedure are not. Functions can return value (without OUT parameter) which can be used in SELECT whereas procedures do not have such concept. As you can see in the above post you can not call even functions also if it has any out parameter.
    I have just trying to use procedure in select statement ..for this I require technical answer..The technical answer is because conceptually procedure is for doing set of operation, performning DMLs on the tables , whereas functions are for processing and producing a single result. Functions are basically for not using INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE in it. That is the reason they are allowed to be used in SELECT because conceptually they are not supposed to do any data changes.

    Using UTL_FILE i'm able to read csv file. I'm stuck up in appending some more columns to same csvYou'll struggle to append data to an existing CSV.
    You'd be better to read the data from one CSV, and create another CSV using that data, and the extra data you want, and then when finished, delete the original file and rename the new file to the old filename.
    You should be able to do that using External Tables to read the source file (easier than using UTL_FILE) and UTL_FILE to write the new file.

  • Can we define cursors from in procedure while using .procedure file?

    Hi Team,
    Can we define cursors from in procedure while using .procedure file?
    I have a catalog procedure in which am using cursors and it is working fine. But while trying to create the same procedure using .procedure , the validation is failing with "An error occurred while parsing your procedure".
    Request your suggestions.
    Regards,
    Krishna Tangudu

    Hi Krishna,
    I also tried to find the validation for procedure and failed. What was on my mind when I posted earlier was related to Window -> Properties -> SAP HANA -> Modeler -> Validation Rules but this is not the same for procedure.
    Also the validation error seems to not being raised by Studio but the server, so it's not a frontend validation anyway.
    Trying to replicate your error I create two procedures here and both worked fine with cursor.
    The behavior you found was the same I found, the .procedure goes to repository and _SYS_BIC after activation and .hdbprocedure goes to catalog only.
    As far as I understood as you are moving from catalog (manually) and it worked on catalog (.hdbprocedure), I could check the declaration of table types of header as it's the main difference.
    Despite this investigation of declaration, you can try create it on modeler direct and see what you found on .procedure created. This can speed up investigation.
    Regards, Fernando Da Rós
    BTW: I'm faced an very strange behavior that each caracter I type on .procedure or .hdbprocedure freezes studio by around 15 seconds ?!?!?!?! (studio rev73)

  • Why we use Procedures?

    Hi Friends,
    I would like to know about procedures in using real life.I m confuse about the use of it.Please help me out.......
    1.Why we use Procedures?
    2.Where we use procedures in real life?
    3.Can we insert 100 of records in a table through a procedures?
    4.is it good to insert through procedures?

    kindly refer below code but i sure if u google around u will find a lots of answer.
    for me procedures is a small programs just like other programming language and your code will be more easy to manage and more faster in debugging process.
    The syntax for a procedure is:
    CREATE [OR REPLACE] PROCEDURE procedure_name
    [ (parameter [,parameter]) ]
    IS
    [declaration_section]
    BEGIN
    executable_section
    [EXCEPTION
    exception_section]
    END [procedure_name];
    When you create a procedure or function, you may define parameters. There are three types of parameters that can be declared:
    IN - The parameter can be referenced by the procedure or function. The value of the parameter can not be overwritten by the procedure or function.
    OUT - The parameter can not be referenced by the procedure or function, but the value of the parameter can be overwritten by the procedure or function.
    IN OUT - The parameter can be referenced by the procedure or function and the value of the parameter can be overwritten by the procedure or function.
    The following is a simple example of a procedure:
    CREATE OR REPLACE Procedure UpdateCourse
    ( name_in IN varchar2 )
    IS
    cnumber number;
    cursor c1 is
    select course_number
    from courses_tbl
    where course_name = name_in;
    BEGIN
    open c1;
    fetch c1 into cnumber;
    if c1%notfound then
    cnumber := 9999;
    end if;
    insert into student_courses
    ( course_name,
    course_number)
    values ( name_in,
    cnumber );
    commit;
    close c1;
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    raise_application_error(-20001,'An error was encountered - '||SQLCODE||' -ERROR- '||SQLERRM);
    END;
    This procedure is called UpdateCourse. It has one parameter called name_in. The procedure will lookup the course_number based on course name. If it does not find a match, it defaults the course number to 99999. It then inserts a new record into the student_courses table.

    actually i want to pass 4 parameters in the procedure that will insert in one table and among the 4 parameters by using one parameter i want to delete one row of another table.
    INSERT INTO soldcar VALUES(sid,cid,cuid,eid,to_date(d,'yyyy/mm/dd')); //soldcar is first table
    DELETE * FROM pcar where id=cid; //pcar is second table

  • How to update multiple records in a table using procedure?

    Dear All,

    my question is i have a table like
    emp id(primary key), empname,location
    1                             damby      blore
    2                             rocky       kormangala
    3                              biswa     india
    my question  is i need to write one procure that at a time i can update empname and location(wat the value are there in empname and location i  need to change at a time).
    thanks
    Damby

    Hi, Damby,
    That sounds like what the UPDATE statement does, exactly.  Just use an UPDATE statement to change any number of columns in existing rows.  You don't need a procedure, but, if you're using a procedure for some other reason, you can do the UPDATE in the procedure.  UPDATE works the same in SQL or PL/SQL.
    Sometimes MERGE is more convenient than UPDATE.  Like UPDATE, it can change any number of columns, either in SQL or PL/SQL.
    I hope this answers your question.
    If not, post a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, relevant columns only) for all the tables involved, and the results you want from that data.
    In the case of a DML operation (such as UPDATE) the sample data should show what the tables are like before the DML, and the results will be the contents of the changed table(s) after the DML.
    Explain, using specific examples, how you get those results from that data.
