Using Session in DAO

Hi
I have our application designed using the MVC , one controller, action classes and DAO .
All the SQL to get the data is done in DAO.
The methods in DAO normally have connection as a parameter normally. Now I need to pass in some information specific to the user who logged in to the application. These values are kep in an object after the login.
What is the best way to approcah this. Should I pass the whole session as a parameter to the DAO or is there any other better way
Please advise
TIA

1: if you want you app to have the functions you say, its
going to need all the parameters.
The only thing I would mention is
lets take a simple example of a jobs site
To run a report of available jobs
1: you go to form and enter parameters from
drop down menus.
2: form goes to servletcontroller
3: servletcontroller passes request to actionclass
4: action class gets parameters and passes them to dao
5: servletcontroller passes results from dao to view
now in this example everytime you want to run a jobs report
you must re-enter your parameters. there are no sessions
2: Could you apply this to your application i.e. everytime
the user runs a report they select the parameters and
these are passed to the dao via (the request to action
extracted then to dao)
this means that you wouldn't be storing large amounts of data in
the sessions and having to worry about them
3: If your only concern is passing mulitple parameters to the
dao, you already stated it's fine and I think you are right
but remember i wouldn't get fired || fail || file ch11
if it's wrong
4: My concern would be the storing of a lot of data in the sessons
and this depends on the number of users and session
management and the amount of data.

    Hi Experts,
    We need to implement Data level security in BI Publisher 11g.
    In OBIEE we do so by using session variables, so just wanted to ask if we can use the same session variables in BI Publisher as well

  • Can I use sessions to solve a problem?

    I have a set of three pages called say "pick", "edit" and "confirm". The edit page is on one of a set of 5 spry tabbed panels.The server is unix and the machine uses windows 64 bit and CS5.5.
    Pick uses a drop down list to select an item to edit. It then sends the record index to the edit page where it is edited.
    Edit then updates the page and sends the user to the confirm page where he told that the edit was OK and is given a link that takes him back to the edit page.
    So far everything works fine - the record is edited and the user knows it. But he needs to be able to check it, and that's the problem..
    While this link does send the user back to the previous page, it does not send any info as to which record it should pull out.
    I have tried to store the value of the record index in a session, but just cannot get it to be available ion the confirm page.
    As soon as I enter <?php session_start() ?> on line 1 of any page, I get the message :
    Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent on line 1  on the pick page and line  62 on the edit page as soon as a button is pressed, or, in the case of the edit page, as soon as live View is active.
    This line is where the page is directed to the next page using a stock Dreamweaver udate record behaviour.:
      $updateGoTo = "editok.php";
      if (isset($_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'])) {
        $updateGoTo .= (strpos($updateGoTo, '?')) ? "&" : "?";
        $updateGoTo .= $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'];
    }header(sprintf("Location: %s", $updateGoTo)); // This is line 62.
    I have checked all the lines for white space, made sure that the instruction is on line 1 and have no include files other than connection files, all with no white space. Matters not whether I put them before or after the session start instruction.
    I even created a new page with just a form and a field to send and this gives the same message - this was not on a spry panel..
    PHP ini has the path to sessions set up, and sessions are visible there.
    I get the feeling that the tabbed panels could be part of the problem, as when the user lands on the edit page, he has to select the second panel, so some output must have been sent to the browser.and that would kill the session I think?
    Is there a way of passing the info from page to page without using sessions?

    Thanks Burak - I was aware of the bom problem.
    Bregent - I think that I found the problem. I was using a set of 5 spry tabs with a form on each and trying to update them one at a time. To get to any of the forms, I had to open a tab, so I assume that the browser generated some output and that was why I had problems with the sessions.
    So I found out how to set up the tabs within the same form, which meant that I could edit all 5 pages at one go, and only post them on the last one. I got the idea from a post on the spry forum which links to a page containing  code which does this at
    http://www.soleproductions.com/oakley/tabform.php
    With some slight modification, this gave me a better solution with no need for sessions.
    This still left the problem of passing the edit page location to the confirm page. Its such a long time since I have used parameters that I had forgotten them.
    However, a little modification to the update record server behaviour enabled me to pass the correct value from the $_POST array to the confirm page.
    Like so:
    From this:
    $updateGoTo = "editok.php";
      if (isset($_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'])) {
        $updateGoTo .= (strpos($updateGoTo, '?')) ? "&" : "?";
        $updateGoTo .= $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'];
    }header(sprintf("Location: %s", $updateGoTo));
    To this:
      $updateGoTo = "editok.php?pick=" . $_POST['club_index'] . "";
      if (isset($_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'])) {
        $updateGoTo .= (strpos($updateGoTo, '?')) ? "&" : "?";
        $updateGoTo .= $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'];
      header(sprintf("Location: %s", $updateGoTo));
    Using this code there was no problem with "headers already sent."
    None of the info is particularly sensitive.
    Thanks for the interest.

  • How to use session in webservice?

    In C#, can use session variable in a webservice object.
    How to use session in Java webservice?
    Who can give me a example?
    Thanks a lot

    Did I use session in a wrong way?No, you are using the session correctly. The code looks fine.
    Check
    - your spelling of the attribute names - obviously they must match
    - the ids of the sessions you get both times: session.getId(). If they have different ids, then most probably the session is being lost somewhere.
    There are a number of reasons to lose a session. If you close the browser, invalidate the session in code, or lose the cookie recording the id. This happens when you change from https to http, so a session can be lost that way.
    The session is normally maintained by session cookies. If you close your browser you lose the cookie. If you have disabled cookies on your machine then it also might not work.
    In cases such as that you should be using the method response.encodeURL() to maintain the session for you in any hyperlinks you produce. Struts normally handles that for you though if necessary.
    Hope this helps,

  • Error while using session.processSendNotification() in PAPI code

    Hi,
    I am writing a PAPI code inside my web-service..
    When I use session.processCreateInstance() in my code and run it, it creates an instance in the process.
    But when I use session.processSendNotification() to invoke my Wait activity it gives me a communication error...
    Here is the error:-
    12:00:24,336 ERROR [STDERR] ProcessService is not being created. An instance of ProcessService 'SampleProject2' was already found.
    12:00:24,445 INFO [STDOUT] Could not connect to Directory Service
    12:00:24,445 ERROR [STDERR] fuego.papi.CommunicationException: A communication error occurred. Try again.
    Why is this error? Any idea?
    I have created my instance in my process using Global Creation and have deployed my web-service on JBOSS...

    Hi,
    Sorry I got a little lost.
    When I use session.processCreateInstance() in my code and run it, it creates an instance in the process.but later you said
    I have created my instance in my process using Global Creation... Know you know this, but are you closing the ProcessService and the ProcessServiceSession when you are done with them?
    If this is the case, it sounds like you were successful in connecting to the Directory Service and creating a session for PAPI (since you created an instance) and were not successful connecting to the Directory Service or creating the session when you make the send notification method call. Just a guess, don't know what your code looks like, but have you tried sending the notification immediately after creating the instance? I know this is not what you want to do, but it would test your send notification logic. If this works, figure out how you are connecting to the session differently in the two blocks of code.

  • Can you use Crystal Reports on a webpage without having to use session?

    In all of the examples I have seen it shows using the session to store the reportdocument object between postbacks.  That means that clicking the page buttons fires a postback.  Other reporting tools such as PDF, ActiveReports, and others do not have to do this.  Is this a limitation of Crystal and a COM backend or is it just a common sample and not the only option?
    How do you get paging to work without having to use session and do postbacks?  AJAX, Javascript, converting to a PDF, etc. would all be possible ways to not require a postback.
    My problem is that I am using SQL Server to store the session and the reportdocument object is not serializeable.  I have been told I can buy Crystal Report Server for $5000 and this will work.  But in reality I can buy other reporting tool for $500 or convert them to SQL Reporting and it will work as well.  So I am trying to be reasonable and figure out what I need to do.  That seems like a bit much to need a whole server application to serve the reports just to turn on paging for a couple of simple reports.  I'm hoping there is a way to not use session to get paging to work.
    I have consider pushing the report into viewstate and not session.  But I would rather not push it into either.  Is this a valid option?
    What is the typical way to handle this sort of thing?  Do you really have to push it into session to get the CrystalReportViewer control to page on an ASPX page.  What other options are there?
    Any suggestions, thoughts, or ideas would be very much appreciated.  This is causing enough of a problem where the company is asking me to look at alternatives if we cannot solve this.
    Best regards,
    Jon

    Acrobat doesnu2019t cause postbacks when paging because the acrobat reader installed locally, so its viewing is in a client-side control.  I imagine the same thing is the case for ActiveReports (some sort of client-side activex control installed).
    If the winform viewer was used on in your web page, then you wouldnu2019t get postbacks either, but then you'd need Crystal Reports runtime on the client to view in that control. And placing a winviewer in a web page give me shivers...
    So, to avoid  using session, recreate the reportdocument and re-load the report on postbacks.
    As Surabh mentioned, you can serialize the report but you will have to use teh InProc RAS. There is an issue thought; you start to get load errors and otehr errors after viewing 3 reports. I belive this has been reported to R&D for a fix  comment, but I do not have and ETA at this time. The code for the InProc RAS SDK would be as follows:
               If Not IsPostBack Then
                Dim rpt As New CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument
                Dim boReportClientDocument As CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ClientDoc.ISCDReportClientDocument
                '           rpt.ReportAppServer = "Inproc:multithreaded"
                rpt.Load("c:inetpubwwwroot     estSerializeInprocRASEmployee Profile.rpt",
               OpenReportMethod.OpenReportByTempCopy)
                boReportClientDocument = rpt.ReportClientDocument
                Dim x As String = boReportClientDocument.DataDefController.Database.Tables(0).Name
                '     boReportClientDocument.DatabaseController.logon("sa", "admin")
                Dim convertUtil As New CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.Utilities.Conversion()
                Dim serializedDoc As String
                serializedDoc = convertUtil.ToString(rpt.ReportClientDocument)
                Session.Add("SerializedDoc", serializedDoc)
                'ViewState.Add("SerializedDoc", serializedDoc)
                Response.Write("The document has been serialized.")
                CrystalReportViewer1.ReportSource = boReportClientDocument.ReportSource
            Else
                Label1.Visible = False
                Button1.Visible = False
                Dim x As String
                x = ViewState("SerializedDoc").ToString()
                Dim deSerializedDoc As ISCDReportClientDocument
                Dim convertUtil As New Conversion
                deSerializedDoc = convertUtil.ToReportClientDocument(Session("SerializedDoc").ToString())
                'deSerializedDoc = convertUtil.ToReportClientDocument(ViewState("SerializedDoc").ToString())
                CrystalReportViewer1.ReportSource = deSerializedDoc
                Response.Write("You are viewing a de-Serialized report" & "<BR>")

  • How to use session in Struts

    Hello, there:
    It's a simple question.
    I have a web app which has a login page, in its action class I create an object, user, and save it into session by using request.getSession(true).setAttribute("user", user).
    In another action class, I want to use the info of user then I use request.getSession(true).getAttribute("user"); however, the returned object is NULL. Did I use session in a wrong way?

  • Use Session Variable with row-wise initialization

    Hello,
    I use an initialization block in order to load some translations in my repository (version is 11.1.1.6.BP1) :
    SQL :
    SELECT CODE_KEY, STRING_VALUE FROM "TABLES" WHERE  LANGUAGE_KEY= 'VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION.USERLOCALE)'
    Values :
    CN_INCOMING, Incoming, en
    CN_OUTGOING, Outgoing, en
    CN_INCOMING, Réception, fr
    CN_OUTGOING, Emission, fr
    etc ...
    I checked the row-wise intialization.
    The query is correct and returns the right values (I check in the log file ..).
    So far, So good.
    But when I want to use session variables in a column expression (in repository) like  :
    CASE WHEN "column"="xx" THEN VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION."CN_INCOMING")  ELSE VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION."CN_OUTGOING") END
    I got the error: [nQSError: 23006] The session variable, NQ_SESSION.CN_OUTGOING, has no value definition.
    If I used the same formula directly in Answers it's working correctly.
    Do I have to necessarily do this in answers or is there a way to do this in the repository.
    Thanks in advance
    Regards
    Benjamin

    Yes I already tested this point, when I don't use a row wise initialization it's working, but I don't want to create one variable for each translations that I need to use in column formula if you know what I mean.
    I don't understand why we can't use this kind of variable in this context ..but if I have to create the column in my analysis, I will do that, but it's not really user friendly
    Anyway thanks for your time.

  • Use SESSION variable in URL from HTML region

    Hello,
    I have what looks like a simple question but i've been struggling with it for three days now, and i need your help!
    I have a page, with an HTML region. I want to display some links to other pages within the application, so i thought i'd use this:
    a href="http://server.xxxx.com:7777/pls/htmldb/f?p=114:13:&SESSION"
    But the session ID is not interpreted, and the link doesn;t work. Any idea what's wrong here? or how i should create links with the session id in it?
    Thanks!!!! Matt

    hi rachna,
    JSP has a default(implicit) session object...... use the getSession(true) method on the session object and then going u can either get or set attributes depending on the requirement
    That was in general and now with the issue u have got..... what u can do is that the u can create session for every user who logs in and when he/she tries to login again then u can probably check for the existing session object in the JSP and perform the logic as required..... any clarifications plzzzzzzz let me know
    Thanks n Regards

    Hi, I have read a lot about using session variables to persist the ReportDocument object across page loads.  This works fine if you have just one page open with one report.  The problem I am having is I have a web application that makes 30 or 40 different reports available to the user.  To simplify the code and make it easier to add new reports I have developed a single template aspx page that can be used to view any of the reports.
    My problem is that if the user opens 2 different reports in 2 separate tabs in the browser then the session variable persistence doesn't work because the session variable is available to both tabs.
    Is there a way to persist the ReportDocument object which is 'page' specific.
    Thanks

    Your best option is likely to have something that makes the session variable names unique.  I've done such things as putting the current datetime in the url as a querystring parameter and appending that to the variable name.  On each postback that querystring should persist.
    You might be able to use the reportclientdocument object and serialize the report and persist through view state, haven't tried this with inproc ras though.  A sample that uses the ras sdk can be found [here|http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/BOBJ/NETRASSDK+Samples]

  • Dates Format in Promts using Session Variables

    Hi Experts,
    I have an issue in controlling date format in prompts using session variable which I am using to set default value.
    By default date format is timestamp E.g '2010-12-19 12:00:00 AM'.
    As per requriement(s) I customized the date format in Reports as 19-Dec-2010 and I saved it as "System Wide Default for <Date Column Name> "
    So, I got desired format in Reports and Date Prompts.
    Now, I need to set a default value in Date Prompt. So, in RPD I created a Session Variable which returned me date in
    DD-MON-YYYY format. Using follwing SQL :
    SELECT REPLACE(CONVERT(VARCHAR(11), Getdate (), 106), ' ', '-') AS [DD-Mon-YYYY]
    But in reports takes this value as string and not Datetime. So i got an error message.
    A datetime value was expected (received "19-Dec-2010").
    If i do not use above SQL to CONVERT date then default date in prompt get displayed as timestamp format and give me desired results but Formatting looks very odd in prompt
    Is this a way so I can persist the [DD-Mon-YYYY] Formatting for default value which comes using variable and still run the report.
    Above problem also exist vice versa that is if i SET that session variable and pass the datetime value to server. But there i guess I can use ToDate or some Casting in RPD column expression to handle that. Tell me if i am right ?
    Thanks

    That almost works. I had to adjust the syntax to the following...and then there are other issues doing this.
    select cust_no, name,'@{session.currentUser}' from customersMy write-back SQL is this:
    UPDATE customers SET NAME='@{c1}',LAST_EDITED_BY='@{c2}' WHERE CUST_NO=@{c0}But I don't want to display the cust_no column to the user. So I hide it in the UI. But if I do that I get the below error during write-back. Apparently sometimes when you hide a column on a direct query (numeric maybe?) the value doesn't transfer over to the write-back. If that's the case, this won't work for me. Hmm...
