Using slim and xfce4, something crashes on exit

I recently did a fresh install of Arch onto an older PC that I have. It's running a P4 3.06GHz, an nVidia GeForce FX 5900, and 1GB RAM. Because of the lower resources, I decided to use xfce4 and slim. I have a monitor and TV hooked up through s-video with the "seperate X screen" option. Whenever I logout of xfce (this includes, logout, reboot, shutdown), it goes to a blank black screen with a cursor at the top left and just hangs. I have slim configured to run from inittab, so it picks up after a couple seconds. However, if I run startx from console, and then logout of xfce the system just hangs and wont accept any keyboard input (including ctrl+alt+function to switch run levels). Also, if I choose to shutdown or reboot, the system will do so but the only thing I see is the blank screen until the POST. If I do a startx from console, the logout, I'm able to ssh in from my laptop, login and issue a reboot (again the screen doesn't change until the POST). Also, if I turn the "seperate x screen" option off, and just run the desktop on the monitor, it doesn't freeze. I've worked my way through a number of issues so far, but this one has me completely stumped. I'm not sure if there's something wrong with my configuration or if it's just a problem with the graphics driver. Any advice and/or help is greatly appreciated.

  • [solved]Slim and new consolekit

Hey all. Just wondering if the the newest version of Slim that came out on January 31st, Slim 1.3.2.-3, works completely fine now with the newest version of consolekit?
    EDIT:
Just installed slim again and everything seems to be fixed. Working with consolekit again!
Last edited by orlfman (2011-02-03 05:02:17)

Using Slim and LXDE. Suspend and hibernate from lxde-logout didn't work and an unpriviledged account I created coudn't access mixer device or mount removable drives without being added to the 'audio' and 'storage' groups after the initial upgrade to new consolekit. But after the very latest upgrades of packages 'slim' and 'consolekit' everything is AFAIK back to working just as before. Unless I stumble over something new I'd say stuff are just OK as of today.
(Remember to merge any /etc/pam.d/login.pacnew to /etc/pam.d/login. Threads suggests that those that forgot got real problems.)

  • Importing bookmark backup causes crash on exit with clean install

I am getting a crash on exit with Firefox 3.6.3. I disabled all addons, removed all themes, even re-installed Firefox. Everything works fine until I import my saved bookmarks backup - and then the crash on exit comes right back.

Are you importing from an HTML file, JSON file, or copying over the places.sqlite file?

  • Updated to Firefox4 and now it crashes every time I use a search engine... goggle, yahoo, bing, take your pick.

I updated to Firefox4 and at first everything seemed to run just fine, but then I tried to search for something, using Google... it crashed.I tried again, then with several other search engines... it crashed every time and took everything else with it.
I tried it with both the search bar and by manually typing in the add for the search engine. If I call up the site nothing bad happens, but it still crashes as soon as I start a search. Tried it with Explorer and Safari and everything worked ok, it's just Firefox having these problems.

    Hi talaimosr,
I understand that you have changed your default search engine because of the constant crashes. Please make sure that you do not have more than one version of Flash installed on the about:addons page.
Please also be sure to run run in Safe Mode to make sure its not an add on causing the crashing. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]
In order to further investigate the reason for crashes please post the last few crash reports that were submitted. In order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.
#Enter ''about:crashes'' in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
#Copy the '''5''' most recent Report IDs that start with '''bp-''' and then go back to your forum question and paste that into the "Post a Reply" box. (Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the ID's. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like)

I just got iphone 5c and i am not happy with it. It uses to much data and i don't even know how. I can't get the ringtones i want for my contacts.I got it on my free upgrade but i want to take it back and get something else but where i got it they say i can't because i don't have the earbuds and i have serches or them. now i am suck with a phone i don't like at all until my next upgrade. this is very dishearten

    1. If you are this unhappy with that phone, and the lost earbuds is the only thing stopping you from taking it back, why do not just buy some earbuds. That way you can get rid of that phone. It all depend upon how much you want to get rid of that phone.
    2. Yet if you are stuck with that iPhone, here is something might help you to control the data usage. By design, iPhones do turn off WiFi when they go dormant. So if a download is in progress and so forth when the phone goes dormant, it will switch to use cellular data, if this setting is left on. Therefore, from multi-sources I have learned that if you keep your iPhone connected to a power source, then it will stay connected to the available WiFi.

Can I airplay a movie from safari on my MacBook to Apple TV and still use the computer for something else at the same time?

    Hi frogjt,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
Great question! You can absolutely do this in OS X 10.9. The attached article explains how the process of using AirPlay with Apple TV to create a second display. Also, towards the bottom of the article there are instructions on how to set your Displays preferences on the computer to make sure the TV and MacBook Pro displays are set up the way you want them to be.

  • JVM Crash When Using JNI and COM

I'm trying to call a DLL compiled from VB6 source code that I do not have access to. The VB6 code simply retrieves data from a DB2 database using ADO and my client code grabs that data and marshals it to my Java code. I'm attempting to achieve this using JNI and COM (without a third-party bridge). It works 75% of the time, but the other 25% of the time, the JVM crashes with the usual Hotspot crash log containing an access violation exception. However, I don't know what in my C++ code (VC++ 8) could be causing this except for passing a "wild" pointer to the code lying underneath the COM object interface. If that is the case, I don't know how I am doing that.
The Java code that is calling my native method is running on Tomcat 5.5.25 and just to be safe, I am not allowing multiple threads to concurrently call the method in my JNI DLL (though I realize that this will kill performance). Once I can get past this problem, I'll do the COM interfacing on a worker thread in my native code so I don't screw up CoInitialize and CoUninitialize calls in the case the same thread is concurrently executing multiple calls to my native code.
I've noticed that in most cases, the JVM crashes during my call to the pClsAccount->OpenConnection method. However, my DLL isn't what is listed on the top of the call stack, which is why I suspect the passing of a wild pointer, though I'm just taking a guess at that. Does anyone have an idea as to what's going on ?

I was using the newest version on OSX 10.7.5 and I was in full screen mode and viewing a photo and it was impossible to exit full screen. This happened at 11:03pm on Friday April 12, 2013. I deleted this from my apps and then deleted iphoto from my purchases in macbook app store the search it the app store and it says it has still been installed. What can I do to fix it?

Well deleting it from your machine was not the way to go.
Deleting it from your Purchases List was definitely not the way to go.
So, I'm not really sure how you're going to reinstall it.
But figure that out and we can try help. Contact App Store support. There's a link on the right hand side of the App Store Window. They should be able to get it back on your purchases list so you can reinstall it.

I bought the Adobe student version of Photoshop and Premiere Elements a few months ago - and now I am trying to use it, and the serial number that I have is incorrect - or it is only the registration number or something? It says I should have been sent an email with the serial number once the product was registered - But I never received this email. If I were you I would first make sure CS6 was deactivated or signed-out. Then download Adobe's cleaner and remove cc, CS6 and any other creative  application installed including Creative Cloud desktop application.  Then install CS6 and use your CS6  serial number during the install to activate CS6 standard or extended which ever the serial number is for.   CS6 Version 13.0 should the be activated. That level of CS6 is extremely bug ridden so be sure to the use CS6 menu Help>Updates to get CS6 updates.  Windows should update to version 13.0.1.3 Mac to version 13.0.6.  Not Subscription CS6 version 13.1.2...

  • I have a new 64bit computer to which I have transferred all my files and re-installed all my programsWhen I try to print a page using Adobe Acrobat 9, Firefox crashes. This has never happened before, and does not happen with other browsers.

I have a new computer. I transferred all my data files and installed my programs. Now, when I try to print a page ti pdf using Adobe Acrobat 9, Firefox crashes, and Adobe hangs up.

Thanks for your reply cor-el. I had never heard of nor seen the pref network.http.max-connections until I read about it in some of the replies in this support forum. People were saying 256 was the old setting and a new setting of 48 would correct my problem. When I followed the instructions to get to - see - and change the setting I discovered that my network.http.max-connections was already set to 48. I never did this. The only way I can think of that this setting was changed is that it happened by an automatic update to my Firefox browser. So, the problem I have was probably happening while this setting was at 48 all along. It is still set at 48 and I am still having the same problem. I will try as you suggest and set it to 30 and see what happens. I'll let you know the results. That's again for your response.

  • Crashing Constantly when using ripple and roll tools.

I have faced this issue in the past, but not as constantly as it is happening now.  Every time I use the ripple or roll tool, or even if I try
to avoid using them and use my mouse to extend an edit - FCP crashes.  I am hardly getting any work done, and obviously am so frustrated.
This has happened to me in the past, on different machines, with different versions of software, but never has it been every time I use
the tool to the point where I get nothing done.
Please help me!  I just created a new project to see if this will work out any bugs.
Thanks as usual to whoever is out there!

    Hi Michael,
This project was originally shot on Super 16mm, and I am doing the re-edit.  (I didn't start with the project, so I didn't set up the specs, transfers, etc.).  The end result will most likely be film at some point, or an HDCam - not sure yet.  It's a feature.
Why are you saying that Apple ProRes HQ is overkill?  I'm starting up a new feature in a couple of weeks and am just now figuring out specs for editing.  We are using the RED camera and I have told the DP that our Codec could be Apple Pro Res HQ.  Can you give me your reasons why this may not be a good idea?
    Thanks!!

I would like to state there is an error on the page of the Zen Vision. It states "GB=,000,000,000" That's what you'd _like_ to think. It's infact; Gigabyte = 07374824 Bytes. Due to my pedantic nature, I'm rather annoyed at the error on the page.
