Using strings as objects

hi.
i get user input of type string but if the string is the same as the name of an object is there any way of using the methods within that object.
for example
class Object{
String name, description;
Object(String nameIn, String descriptionIn){
name=nameIn;
description=descriptionIn;
void showDescription(){
System.out.println(description);
when i create a new object
Object brick = new Object("brick", "it's hard");
and i get user input of type String
"brick"
how would i get
brick.showDescription();
i didn't think this was possible so i created an array of Objects
Object objectHolder = new Object[10];
but i couldn't figure out how to add the Object to the array when it was being created.
class Object{
String name, description;
static Object objectHolder = new Object[10];
int store=0;
Object(String nameIn, String descriptionIn){
name=nameIn;
description=descriptionIn;
objectHolder[store] = Object // this doesn't work, i want it to be
// the Object that is being created
store = store + 1;
then i can compare the String to each Object.name in the array to find the Object, and then get the Object.showDescription
what do you think?
also i would like to know how to add the object to the array as it is being created even if you think it is not a good way of doing it.
thanks

First off, never ever name your objects "Object", since that is very, very confusing. The reason for this is because ALL objects are derived from java.lang.Object, and the less ambiguity with that name the better.
Now, let's look at your object. We'll call it "DungeonObject" for lack of a better name.
The "objectHolder" should probably not actually be inside of DungeonObject. Instead, make it external to your object.
Let's assume you have a container object called "Dungeon" which makes use of DungeonObjects.
You could write the following for Dungeon:
public class Dungeon {
DungeonObject[] objectHolder;
int nIndex;
public Dungeon(int nObjectSize) { // constructor
objectHolder = new DungeonObject[nObjectSize];
nIndex = 0;
private boolean addObject(DungeonObject obj) {
if (nIndex < objectHolder.length) {
objectHolder[nIndex++] = obj;
return true;
return false;
public boolean createObject(String name, String desc) {
return addObject(new DungeonObject(name, desc));
}When you want to create an object, use createObject.
The DungeonObject it references could be defined as:
public class DungeonObject {
String m_name;
String m_description;
public DungeonObject(String name, String description) {
m_name = name;
m_description = description;
// add gets and sets as described in previous post

• Special characters in XML structure when prepared using String

Hi,

This issue is observed only while running the code in server, not from Jdev.
When we append the additional tags without new line character, "\n", there are no extra characters being added. Also, in other case also. where we used "Marshaller" to prepare the XML, we have seen this issue.
After we set the below property to false, we got rid of the extra characters.
jaxbMarshaller.setProperty(Marshaller.JAXB_FORMATTED_OUTPUT, false);
Apparently the insertion of new line when the code runs on server(Weblogic 10.3.6.0) is creating the issue.
Please let me know if anyone has come across a similar scenario.
Thanks,

I am building this XML in a servlet so ,right, DOM does process XML (even though a valid HTML file can be loaded into a DOM object) but if you build XML using DOM then write the XML out using PrintWriter and Transformer objects this will cause the XML to print out in your browser. If you view source on this XML you will see that the DOM object has translated all special characters to there &xxxx; equivalent. For a example: when the string (I know "cool" java) gets loaded into a attribute using the DOM object then wrote back out it looks like (I know &xxx;cool&xxx; java) if you view the source in your browser. This is what it should do, but the DOM object is not change the to the "&xxxxx;". This servlet is acting as a gateway between a Java API and a windows asp. The asp will call the servlet expecting to get XML back and load it directly into a DOM object. When the windows DOM object gets the xml that I am returning in this servlet is throws a exception "invalid character" because the was not translated to &xxxx; like the other characters were. According to the book HTML 4 in 24 hours (and other references) the eacute; or #233; are how you say "" in HTML or XML. How do you say it?

• How can I use a COM object that does not have a type library?

Hello,
I've created a com server in python for which I do not have a type library. I am able to call functions for this application in Python, TCL, I'm sure VB, etc. without the type library.
Must I have a type library registered to use this COM object with Labview? I was hoping I could simply supply the name to the refnum (or the GUID) then call functions by passings strings to the invoke node. This does not seem to be possible - am I missing something?
In the event that I cannot use a com server without a type library. Any recommendataions on how to create one? I'm wondering if I can use the same GUID and create a shell in LabWindows which generates the IDL/TBD file I need for Labview to see my
com server.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes that is true. LabVIEW needs that to configure the Property and
Methode Nodes correctly. Otherwise it would need to have a special
Property and Method Node with a configuration dialog similar to the Call
Library Node, but a LOT more complicated. Not sure many people could
make use of that, and it would be a very tiring experience trying to get
things setup in that way, by going through the edit, test, and crash
cycle over and over again.

• Using a Scanner object in a foreach loop

Hi,
I am trying to get this code to work:
String numbers = "45 63 123 4 666";
Scanner scan = new Scanner (numbers);
for (String word : scan)
System.out.println(word);
And I am getting the following error from the compiler:
"foreach not applicable to expression types"
I'm not sure why this is causing a problem. Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Diane Mega

short answer:
Scanner is not a Collection
Long Answer
the for-each loop is actually an internal java macro which uses an Iterator object to iterate.
and in order to iterate it calls the classes Iterator method and uses that to Iterate across, and the only objects that have iterators are those that implement the Collections interface, and a Scanner is not a collection.
in other words, to use the for-each loop, the object must implement Collection OR it must be a low level array.
the actual macro expansion is equal to
for (type var : coll) {
body-of-loop
//is the same as
for (Iterator<type> iter = coll.iterator(); iter.hasNext(); ) {
type var = iter.next();
body-of-loop
}

Hi,
If don't change the default config, We are unble to download master page.
It's better to create your own (perhaps based on the default.master) and use that master page.
also,make sure there's no a permission issue on the website.

• How to use string functions (substr or ltrim or replace) in OLAP universe.

cost element (0COSTELMNT) - 10 CHAR
Controlling area (0CO_AREA) - 4 CHAR
[0COSTELMNT].[LEVEL01].[[20COSTELMNT]].[Value]
cOST ELEMENT is compounded/prefixed with Controlling Area. I just want to see cost element without conrolling area in the BO report.
Currenlty BO unierse is build based on bex query. I am able to suppress the compounding object in bex query by chaning controlling area to 'No display'. But still BO Webi report displaying compounded values in the report. (Bex report works as expected)
eg: Current display in reort.
controlling area/cost element.
AB00/2222
AB00/2223
AB00/2224
Wanted like below:
2222
2223
2224
I think by using string fucntions (substring, ltrim or replace etc.), I can get the required result. But I am having issues with syntax. I have used like below.
substr(0COSTELMNT ; 5 ; 10)
substr(0COSTELMNT; 5 ; Length(0COSTELMNT)-5)
substr(0COSTELMNT; Pos(0COSTELMNT;"/")+1;10)
ltrim(0COSTELMNT,'AB00/')
What is the syntax for substring/replace functions in OLAP universe. Technical name of cost element in OLAP universe is [0COSTELMNT].[LEVEL01].[[20COSTELMNT]].[Value].
I want to fix this at universe level not at report level as i am using cost element in filter/variable section of the report. Please provide me syntax for above example.

Hi,
In fact SAP BW MDX supports limited string manipulation and only with NAME and UNIQUENAME attributes.
Here are some samples that you can use in universes:
MID([0COSTELMNT].currentmember.NAME,1,4)
LEFT([0COSTELMNT].currentmember.NAME,2)
RIGHT([0COSTELMNT].currentmember.NAME,3)
MID([0COSTELMNT].currentmember.UNIQUENAME ,1,4)
LEFT([0COSTELMNT].currentmember.UNIQUENAME ,2)
RIGHT([0COSTELMNT].currentmember.UNIQUENAME ,3)

• Special characters in XML built using the DOM object

I am using the DOM object to build xml but I am having problems with special characters. I have a Element object that I create attributes in. Most special characters like the &, ", or ' are translated for me (amp; quot;, acute; put a & in front of those, if I do it here the browser will translate them into the logical character) but I am having a problem with the character. The DOM object does not translate this. If I do it my self to(eacute; same here add a & in front) before adding the string to the attribute then the DOM object translates it to (amp;eacute; add a & in front of the amp; not in front of the eacute;). As you can see the DOM object translates the & instead of recognizing that it is a HTML character. Can anyone give me a hand?

NetworkCredential credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "pwd", "domain");
ClientContext context = new ClientContext("http://site-url");
context.Credentials = credentials;

• RE: Using the Currency Object

Hi
I tried using the currency object to display the currency symbol for the UK and Europe, here is an example of what I did
String currency = Currency.getInstance("EUR").getSymbol();
or for the UK
String currency = Currency.getInstance("GBR").getSymbol();
but I ended up with unicode characters instead of currency symbols like this or what am i doing wrong

(I guess you made a little typo, the Great Britain Pound is GBP and not GBR.)
Currency.getSymbol returns the symbol that should be used for that currency in the current locale. So if you are in UK "GBP" comes out as the sterling pound symbol, in countries where they use Euro it comes out as €, but everywhere else the result is the three letter (?) currency code itself. This is because pounds and dollars are used in many countries and they have the same symbol; you wouldn't want users to confuse US dollars with Canadian dollars. So try these:
String pound = Currency.getInstance("GBP").getSymbol(new Locale("en", "GB"));
String euro = Currency.getInstance("EUR").getSymbol(new Locale("fr", "FR"));

hi
can anybody please explain to me what does HttpServletRequest request.setAttribute() do? and for what purpose is it used for?
i already know that HttpSession session.setAttribute(String parm1, Object parm2) is used to bind a session to a variable, so that it can be accessed throughout the servlet application.

ps: please correct me if i'm wrong

What does the API doco say?
I think it just sets a request scoped attribute... ie a request parameter.

So now I have a question, Why should still we use

• String to object?

Hi,
I have a problem in converting string to object.
The way I intended to do is like this:
String a1 = "John";
String a2 = "Smilth";
String a3 = "Eric";
String a10 = "Howard";
and I wanna assgin the value of a1 ~ a10 into a temp string.
like this;
for (int i = 1; i<= 10; i++)
String tempString = "a" + i; //assign the value of original string into tempString.
// bla bla bla
I know I have to use class.forName() to get what I want, but I have no clue on how to
implement this in detail. Any help will be great appreciated.
Thanks
TC Wang

May I ask why you do it so complicatec? Why don't you use an array?
String[] a = new String[10]
a[0] = "John";
a[1] = "Smilth";
a[2] = "Eric";
a[9] = "Howard";
// arrays start with zero, but 0 to 9 are also ten entries just
// like 1 to 10.
for (int j = 0; j <= a.length; j++)
String tempString = a[j];
// Here goes your other code
// I replaced i with j, because i surrounded by round brackets
// means printing text cursive on this BBS board
