Using terminal to connect to localhost:8888

I have mysql installed and im using terminal to connect to localhost:8888 but its not working
mysql -h localhost:8888 -u root
What am I doing wrong?
thanks in advance

I think you cannot ssh to your machine as root if you didn't enable the root user on your computer (it isn't enabled by default and you shouldn't, unless you have a very good reason to do so).
If you just need a webserver for local testing of webpages you can use MAMP. If you do, simply enter
/Applications/MAMP/Library/bin/mysql -u root -p
It then asks you for your password (root) and you're done (the mysql root user has nothing to do with your systems root user). You can also use phpMyAdmin from the MAMP startpage.
That's the way I do it here and it works flawlessly. The latest MAMP comes with PHP 5.2.6 and MySQL 5.0.41. Place your pages inside /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/someFolder and then you can access them via http://localhost:8888/someFolder. Use localhost:8889 as your MySQL host in your scripts with user root/password root.
Most paths in MAMP are hardcoded, so you have to install it in /Applications (or place an alias of the MAMP folder there).
Hope it helps.
Ralf.

  • Problem with function keys while using Terminal to connect to UNIX host

We are trying to use macs at my office, but we've hit a big roadblock. Our company software runs on a UNIX server, and until now everyone in the company uses either dedicated UNIX terminals, or terminal emulation software in windows. I was thrilled to learn that we could use the terminal in OSX to connect to the server, and it did not take long to get it to work.
The problem is the function keys. Almost all of the menu options in our company software require the use of the function keys, F1-F10. I was able to access F9 and up by pressing command-F9, etc. but we're now having issues with F3 and F4.
The computer in question is an intel macbook, and we have been using the fn key of course. The specific problem they showed me was with F3. In the software, it is supposed to lauch an extra menu, but pressing fn-F3 on the macbook results in an error ("number required", which is the message it would normally return if we tried to press return).

Your problem is two-sided, I think. The first is that you need to set Terminal to send the right escape sequence. This is done with the Inspector (CMD-I) and selecting Keyboard. Get the correct key mapping in there. The other side is to make sure the system isn't intercepting your intended keystroke, so go into System Preferences->Keyboard & Mouse->Kwyboard shortcuts and make sure that the bindings you're using aren't enabled.

  • Using Terminal with a dial-up connection to a Unix server

Normally I use a cable modem at home to connect to a Unix server at work. All I have to do is fire up the Terminal application, type "telnet servername.domainname.com", and I am up and running.
A couple days ago my cable modem service died and it is going to take a week to get it fixed. Wanting to find a temporary alternative connection, I remembered that my PowerMac G5 came equipped with an Apple internal modem. I connected the modem to a phone line, went to the Network configuration panel in System Preferences, and configured the modem to dial-up the Unix server at work. Using the Internet Connect application, the modem can connect to the Unix server, but that application attempts to make a PPP connection, not a plain old-fashioned command-line Unix connection.
What I really want to do is use the Terminal application to dial-up the Unix server. Does anybody know how to do that?
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

You need to know more about how the server at the other end is configured.
Internet Connect will only manage an internet connection, typically via PPP. If the server at the other end is not configured as a PPP server then you're not going to get anywhere with it.
If the server is set to use the modem as a standard serial interface then you'll need a terminal emulator that can manage the serial ports (terminal.app is not such an app).
Fortunately there are many options, including the venerable ZTerm. This will let you use the modem to dial a number and log in over a simple serial line.

  • IPad connect to localhost with Lion 10.7.3?

I'm running a copy of Wordpress on my localhost using MAMP.
It's running perfectly and I can access my install via http://localhost:8888/wordpress/ without any problems.
I've read elsewhere that I should be able to connect to this install via my wireless network using my iPad/iPhone by going to:
    IP:PORT/wordpress  >>>  ie/ 192.168.1.7:8888/wordpress
However this doesn't seem to work - I keep getting a Safari 'Cannot Open Page' error...
I'm running Lion 10.7.3 on the macmini and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
    Thanks!

To determine your IP address you can view it in System Preferences -> Network and select Ethernet or Wireless depending on your configuration.  The connected interfaces will have a green dot indicating a connected status.
Alternatively, if you are good comfortable with Terminal Application you can try the following:
Make sure the IP address you are connecting to is correct by going to the MAMP server and running:
    ifconfig |grep inet |grep -v inet6
This should give a list of your ip addresses such as
    inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000
    inet 10.0.1.110 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.1.255
With your ipad you will connect, in my case, to "http://10.0.1.110:8888/wordpress/" without the quotes.  Do not use the 127.0.0.1 address on your ipad.  You look like you may already understand this and were using 192.168.1.7 but it doesn't hurt to double check.
If that doesn't resolve the problem go into "System Preferences" -> "Security"
Select the firewall tab and click "Turn Off Firewall" for the duration of this test.  Turn the firewall back on as it protects your computer.
Then try to connect from you iPad again and it should work.
If that does not it may mean the web server is not listening on the correct interface.  If the above does not work there are many other paths.
You did turn on your firewall, correct?

  • Problems with SCP and Connecting to Localhost

I have two problems that may or may not be related. The first is trying to use scp from the command line. It used to work fine, but now when I try it, I get prompted for the remote password, then the date gets displayed, and that's it. No file transfer happens. An example run looks like this:
    [12:22 PM][~]$scp [email protected]:boolean/programs/btbs.pl .
    [email protected]'s password:
    Mon Nov 21 12:20:39 EST 2005
    [12:22 PM][~]$
The second problem I have is trying to user a web browser to connect to localhost. I have PHP installed on my system and am running the apache web server. It worked fine for a while, but now when I try to view a PHP page on my machine, the browser tells me it cannot connect to the server. An example looks like this:
Safari can’t open the page “http://127.0.0.1/~user/index.php” because it could not connect to the server “127.0.0.1”.
Any input would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Just some wild guesses:
The problem with scp may be due to your terminal emulation.
With regard to localhost, you might check whether web access to your computer has somehow been turned off.
Please excuse, if this is all nonsense.

  • Performance degradation using Jolt ASP Connectivity for TUXEDO

We have a customer that uses Jolt ASP Connectivity for TUXEDO and is suffering
from a severe performance degradation over time.
Initial response times are fine (1 s.), but they tend to increase to 3 minutes
after some time (well, eh, a day or so).
    Data:
    - TUXEDO 7.1
    - Jolt 1.2.1
    - Relatively recent rolling patch installed (so no there are probably no JSH performance
issues and memory leaks as fixed in earlier patches)
The ULOG shows that during the night the JSH instances notice a timeout on behalf
of the client connection and do a forced shutdown of the client:
    040911.csu013.cs.kadaster.nl!JSH.234333.1.-2: JOLT_CAT:1185: "INFO: Userid:
[ZZ_Webpol], Clientid: [AP_WEBSRV3] timed out due to inactivity"
    040911.csu013.cs.kadaster.nl!JSH.234333.1.-2: JOLT_CAT:1198: "WARN: Forced
shutdown of client; user name 'ZZ_Webpol'; client name 'AP_WEBSRV3'"
This happens every 10 minutes as per configuration of the JSL (-T flag).
The customer "solved" the problem for the time being by increasing the connection
pool size on the IIS web server.
However, they didn't find a "smoking gun" - no definite cause for the problem.
So, it is debatable whether their "solution" suffices.
It is my suspicion the problem might be located in the Jolt ASP classes running
    on the IIS.
Maybe the connection pool somehow loses connections over time, causing subsequent
users having to queue before they get served (although an exception should be
raised if no connections are available).
However, there's no documentation on the functioning of the connection pool for
    Jolt ASP.
    My questions:
    1) What's the algorithm used for managing connections with Jolt ASP for TUXEDO?
    2) If connections are terminated by a JSH, will a new connection be established
from the web server automatically? (this is especially interesting, because the
connection policy can be configured in the JSL CLOPT, but there's no info on how
this should be handled/configured by Jolt ASP connectivity for TUXEDO)

    Winfried Scheulderman

    Hi,
For ASP connectivity I would suggest looking at the .Net client facility provided in Tuxedo 9.1 and later.

OK.  Did you really mean to ask this question on a ColdFusion forum, if it's DreamWeaver you're having problems with?  You're probably better off raising this on a DreamWeaver forum.  "Using the correct tool for the job" 'n'all.

  • Connecting to "localhost" on port "21212" failed

    I run startinstgui.bat to install WEBAS640SP9 before I downloaded J2sdk-1_4_2_06.
I got error message with Connection to SAPinst can not be establish - Connecting to "localhost" on port "21212" failed. I tested with different values - no result.
    Any idea?

Maybe this could be the case.....
You have a fault in your network and hostname configuration.
You hostname should be different to localhost.
    - > rename your full qualified hostname
    -> e.q linux.mydomain.foo
You can use the configuration tool Yast to change it.
It should be able use the command ping with your hostname
If the name of your host is linux.mydomain.foo
    ping linux
    ping linux.mydomain.foo
    should work.
If your full qualified hostname is linux.mydomain.foo the file
    /etc/hosts should be
    127.0.0.1      localhost      localhost.localdomain
    127.0.0.2      linux          linux.mydomain.foo
It is important that localhost and linux are mapped to a differnt IP
    address. Something like
    127.0.0.1   localhost    localhost.localdomain   linux
    do not work.
The best choice to run the NW4 testdrive is to use Suse 9 because you do
not need to change any configuration. On Suse 9.1 the NW4 also runs but
you have to set an environment variable and you will get an error
    message because of kernel 2.6
Also don't forget start boot.sysctl at boot time.
    ln -s /etc/init.d/boot.sysctl /etc/init.d/rc1.d/S99boot.systctl
    ln -s /etc/init.d/boot.sysctl /etc/init.d/rc3.d/S99boot.systctl
    ln -s /etc/init.d/boot.sysctl /etc/init.d/rc5.d/S99boot.systctl
    /sbin/sysctl -p

  • How do I use 'Terminal' or something similar to Tether my Galaxy Phone

How do I use 'Terminal' or something similar to Tether my Galaxy [Note 1] Phone to my Macbook Pro in such a way that the Android phone gets my mac on the internet.
If it's possible for FREE then I can probably do that.
I try using the "Play" Store icon on the phone & it says 'No connection'.
Having a Macbook and not get internet is VERY frustrating.
    TIA.

If the phone has a Wi-Fi tethering mode, it should appear in the Wi-Fi menu on your Mac as a wireless network.

    Hi.
Intend of "dsconf set-plugin-prop dssnmp argument:on argument:3995" command is to configure a Directory Server so that it can be monitored through SNMP.
The error you got occurs as dsconf command is not able to connect to the Directory Server. By default dsconf tries to connect to port 389. If you Directory Server listens on another port, use the --port option of dsconf.

  • Viewing "This PC" Devices and Drives when connected through a Terminal Services connection

Greetings,  [long-time listener, first time caller]
I am a service technician who remotely logs into customer servers using terminal services.  I am accessing systems around the globe.  I regularly need to move files from my local system to the customer system, so I always connect with my local
    (client) drives.
A feature of Windows Server 2012 R2 drives me insane.  I use the good old "[Windows] + e" Shortcut to bring up the file explorer.  It displays "This PC".  It displays both the server's local volumes and \\tsclient\
volumes by name and also waits to display the information until it can get volume information from the terminal service drives.
    The end result is that:
    1) The Devices and Drives display is delayed by 5 to 10 seconds while it gets volume data for the network drives and
    2) The drives I care about, the customer's local drives, are displayed AFTER the The Terminal Services drives AND Server-side removable storage.
Am I missing a way to display the networked devices separately?  This is extremely annoying.  It wastes my time and displays items illogically.
I know there are third party apps that can help (OldNewExplorer).  But they are not an option for me.
[Modified on 2014.11.07]  I have attached a screenshot of the way it looks in Windows Server 2012.
    Thank you

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
From your description it seems that local drive redirection is not working. For this please check whether drive redirection is enabled on server side and whether any group policy is not set to disallow the client drive redirection. Check on domain controller
that the 'Default Domain policy" - 'Do not allow drive redirection' was disabled.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Mail.app no longer connecting to localhost or 127.0.0.1 port 143

    Gentleones,
    Problem:
Mail.app cannot connect to localhost or 127.0.0.1 on port 143 in order to use an SSH-tunnelled connection to my IMAP server. It gripes that "The IMAP server '127.0.0.1' is not responding."
    Background:
I occasionally have to connect via SSH tunnel to my mail server at home to access my E-mail via IMAP and Mail.app. While I have done so for several years, within the last two weeks, something has happened that no longer allows me to do so. (I think the triggering event was upgrading the client machine to 10.4.7, but I'm not positive.)
    Troubleshooting done to date:
I can successfully open the tunnel and use TELNET to login to my server on the IMAP port, 143.
I installed the latest version of Eudora and it connects to the tunnel successfully.
I have deleted both the com.apple.mail.plist and both ~/Library/Mail and ~/Library/Mail Downloads folders, but that hasn't made any difference.
Anybody got any idea what is going on here?
    Thanks,
    Bill

  • ERROR: Abnormal termination of connection

    Hi All,
We recently upgraded to Oracle Forms 6i in character mode, running on HP Unix 11.11. My users frequently crash. The screen changes to just a few characters on the right hand side. There are dump files in the forms directory -- one follows. The error message is Abnormal termination of connection, Error Code: 1
Any clues or hints would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jim Barnhart

This is probably not Oracle Applications eBusiness Suite forms as 11i uses $ORACLE_HOME/forms60 and R12 uses $ORACLE_HOME/forms.
