Using VIATRA transformations efficiently on a subgraph of an EMF model

Hi,
I have EMF models describing program codes and I am using manually-implemented transformations to simplify these models. I'd like to introduce some new, expression-simplification rules using VIATRA without rewriting all the old transformations (for the moment). I use batch transformations in VIATRA to avoid any interference. While describing the new transformations using VIATRA's language was convenient and quicker than implementing them manually, the performance of the VIATRA-based reductions is much worse, even if the old ones are not really optimized. (About the models: the whole program code model can contain up to 1..10 million EObjects. The expression subtrees I'm trying to reduce are typically small, but in some cases they can contain 1k..100k elements -- these are the situations when model transformations could help. I was able to reduce the size of expression from about 1000 to 10 using VIATRA transformations, now I need to make these reductions fast.)
The old reductions are applied in a loop, until any of them can modify the model. If I apply the new, VIATRA-based reductions at the beginning to the whole model, it makes the old reductions slow. If in each loop I create a new BatchTransformation, fire the rules and dispose the engine right after, the speed of the old reductions is OK, but the initialization of the BatchTransformation takes a long time. Ok, it's not a big surprise.
However, my VIATRA-based reductions are only used to simplify complex expression subtrees, so it would be enough to fire them when a huge expression subtree is created (it is known when does it happen), and only on this expression subtree. But:
1) If I create a BatchTransformation with EMFScope(<root of the expression subtree>), no rules can fire. The expression subtrees can contain VariableReferences whose reference to a variable is not a containment reference. My rules have constraitns on the referenced variables, but they are out of the scope of the transformation.
2) If I create a new ResourceSet, containing the expression to be reduced and the variable declarations, the rules work, but I mess up my original model as I remove some elements from the original resource.
3) If I use a BatchTransformation with EMFScope(<root of the whole model>, options) and the options object has an IBaseIndexObjectFilter which filters out all expression subtrees except the one I try to reduce, the performance seems to be worse (or at least not any better) than if I don't use any filtering at all.
I know that most probably I am misusing VIATRA, but is there any way to efficiently restrict the transformations for a subgraph of the EMF model? Or I just shouldn't use VIATRA in this case? Any helpful suggestions are welcome.
Cheers,
Daniel

Just to make it clear: these kinds of issues are caused by your configuration of the incremental engine of EMF-IncQuery (which is typically used by VIATRA rules) and not VIATRA itself.
Quote:

To explain: this is because an IncQuery engine is initialized on your model and it processes all your changes, even if they are made outside of VIATRA.

... indeed, as in each loop you initialize a new IncQuery engine from scratch, which is an expensive operation in your case.
Now on to my advice which will hopefully help:

There is a recently fixed issue (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=473841) which will hopefully remedy your problem. Could you please check with a snapshot or CI build from today whether this is the case?

For your usecase (assuming you are interested in "batch" transformations only), perhaps a better fit is the new local search-based pattern matching engine available from IncQuery 1.0.0. More details on how to use it can be found at
https://wiki.eclipse.org/EMFIncQuery/UserDocumentation/API/Advanced#Using_alternative_search_algorithms
An a few concrete examples:
https://github.com/FTSRG/trainbenchmark-ttc/blob/master/hu.bme.mit.trainbenchmark.ttc.benchmark.emfincquery/src/main/java/hu/bme/mit/trainbenchmark/ttc/benchmark/emfincquery/benchmarkcases/EMFIncQueryBenchmarkCase.java#L85
https://github.com/FTSRG/trainbenchmark-ttc/blob/master/hu.bme.mit.trainbenchmark.ttc.benchmark.emfincquery/src/main/java/hu/bme/mit/trainbenchmark/ttc/benchmark/emfincquery/benchmarkcases/EMFIncQueryPosLength.java#L42
However, it is important to note that the search-based pattern matcher does not support updates which are required for EVM rules for VIATRA. So in order to make use of this feature, unfortunately you need to rewrite your transformation according to the "Batch IncQuery" style, as described in https://github.com/IncQueryLabs/incquery-examples-cps/wiki/Alternative-transformation-methods#batch and https://github.com/IncQueryLabs/incquery-examples-cps/wiki/Simple-Xtend-and-IncQuery-M2M-transformation
I hope this helps.

  • How to use the transformation matrix in Placed Suite.

    I am in trouble how to use the transformation matrix Placed Art (PlacedSuite ).
           AIRealMatrix rasterMatrix;

         error = sAIRaster-> GetRasterMatrix (art, & rasterMatrix);
    } else if ((artType == kPlacedArt) {
         error = sAIPlaced-> GetPlacedMatrix (art, & placedMatrix);
    When I converted to using the transformation matrix of PlacedArt, the target art could not be converted to expect.
    I could convert in case of the RasterArt. (The reference point of the transformation matrix of RasterArt is (0,0).)
    In the PlacedArt, preference point is not (0,0)?
    The tx/ty of the transformation matrix of PlacedArt is not correct?
    In the transformation matrix of RasterArt and Placed Art, how are those two different?

    The short answer is "no", (0, 0) is not the origin of placed art (unlike kRasterArt). Off the top of my head, I believe when you place art, its original state is upside-down and flipped horizontally in the upper-right of the artboard. If you want to see where it starts, simply create an identity matrix and apply that as the matrix for the kPlacedArt and you'll see how it starts. Yes, its pretty crazy.
    minimum99 posted some code that might help. I haven't tried it (I rolled my own years ago) but I'd give it a whirl:

  • Using "Image/Transform/Perspective" on a layer?

    Hi,
    I'm new at this.  I have a shot of a big room with empty art frames on the walls.  I have rectangular layers that are shots of paintings that I want to drop into the frames, but of course the paintings layers have to be skewed to show the perspective angle (trapezoid) that matches the room.  Problem is, it seems that I can only use Image/transform/perspective on the painting files before they become layers.  This means guessing the perspective, then moving them into the background, which is trial&error at best.  It's very hard to guess the appropriate perspective when the file isn't a layer. It seems that once the painting files become layers, the "perspective" option is no longer available.  I can use "skew," or "free transform," but not "perspective."    "Skew" doesn't work, because while it will allow changing the rectangle into a paralellogram, it won't allow me to change the rectangle into a trapezoid. "Free Transform" doesn't work for the same reason.  So, How do you apply the "perspective" function to a layer?
    If I knew how to change the rectangle by grabbing one of a selection's corner anchor boxes and fixing it place, that would help because I could create my own trapezoid, but I don't know how to do that.  Does anyone?
    Thanks!

    I've no idea why all the transform options aren't available; they are here.
    Anyway, try this:
    Drag or copy/paste the painting in. It will come in as a new layer.
    Convert that layer to a smart object (Layer > Smart Object > Convert..). Reduce the smart object opacity to 50%.
    Choose Transform > Distort and move the corners individually into place.
    When you're happy, set opacity back to 100% and rasterize the smart object.
    The beauty of the smart object in this case is that you can transform repeatedly without any additional quality loss; it will be rendered only once when you rasterize.

  • Creating XML file Using Call Transformation

    Hello Friends,
          I have searched before posting thread, couldnt find anything.
          I am creating an XML file using Call Transformation. My internal table has 3 date fields and some other fields.  For some records I dont have values for the date fields. In that case my XML file is giving the date value as 0000-00-00 since I declared it as Date type.  This value 0000-00-00  is not accepted by the middle ware as the valid date.  I can not change it as String type as per the suggestion.
    In that case I am advised to skip printing the date field tag if it doesnt have value.
         Is there any way to skip the date field if it is empty. Any Suggestions please ?.
    Thanks
    Lakshmi.

    Hi,
    I had exactly the same problem before. When you call a transformation there is an option called initial_components. According to SAP if you use initial_components = 'SUPRESS' the empty fields should not being generated on the XML.
    Now, this didn't work for me and I have seen some people with the same problem. Here is how I solved this (maybe not the best way but it worked):
    First: My fields are all CHAR in my table
    Second: In the transformation, you can use conditional transformation to not display a tag if field is empty, here a piece of my transformation (I am using simple transformations):
       <tt:root name="ROOT"/>
         <tt:cond s-check="not-initial(ref('ROOT.L1_NM')) or not-initial(ref('ROOT.L2_NM'))">
              <TRNMTR_NM>
                <tt:cond s-check="not-initial(ref('ROOT.L1_NM'))">
                  <l1_nm>
                    <tt:value ref="ROOT.L1_NM"/>
                  </l1_nm>
                </tt:cond>
                <tt:cond s-check="not-initial(ref('ROOT.L2_NM'))">
                  <l2_nm>
                    <tt:value ref="ROOT.L2_NM"/>
                  </l2_nm>
                </tt:cond>
              </TRNMTR_NM>
            </tt:cond>
    As you can see, I first check if the fields have values.
    Hope it helps

    if in SOA (BPEL & Mediator) you can use oraext:parseXML.
    you should thoroughly analyse where to implement your requirement as some good practices advise to implement more complex logic in SOA and leave OSB to only connect to the services' endpoints.

  • Exception using JAXP transformer on non-default DOM

    Hi!
    I have a problem with the JAXP integration of my own DOM implementation. I've written a compressed core level 1 DOM implementation and integrated it into JAXP by writing a DocumentBuilder and a DocumentBuilderFactory class. Although not 100% of all DOM methods are implemented completely, it works fine for typical xml documents. I can read in a xml document using JAXP by setting the DocumentBuilderFactory setting to my implementation:
    System.setProperty("javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory", "ddom.jaxp.DDocumentBuilderFactory");
    But if I try to use a Transformer on the document, I get a NoSuchMethodException:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoSuchMethodError
         at org.apache.xpath.DOM2Helper.getNamespaceOfNode(DOM2Helper.java:348)
         at org.apache.xml.utils.TreeWalker.startNode(TreeWalker.java:281)

         at ddom.DTreeTester.write(DTreeTester.java:59)
         at ddom.DTreeTester.main(DTreeTester.java:76)
    Unfortunately there is no source code available for JAXP, so I can't really figure what's going wrong. From the exception it is obvious that the Transformer is trying to figure out the namespace before it crashes. As my implementation ony implements DOM level 1 at the moment there is no support for namespaces. But of course this is reported by my DocumentBuilder class, so no calls to such methods hould occur.
    I just wanted to use the identity transformation to produce some nice output files. I would be very happy if anyone could help me with this problem.
    Mathias

    I tried to get more info on the DOM2Helper class, but only found lots of deprecated APIs. There seems to be some work done on internal APIs dealing with that class. Search for "DOM2Helper" in this page http://xml.apache.org/xalan-j/readme.html
    Maybe you just need to get a newer version of Xalan.

    Hi Linda,
        I am replying based on your sample code.
       Try the below following suggestions.
       here 'GRPHDR' is the node where I am selecting the data.
               IGRPHDR is the name of the reference.
    First calling the transformation in you program.
    TYPES: BEGIN OF tl_hdr,
               msgid(20)    TYPE c,
                 END OF tl_hdr.
    DATA : t_hdr           TYPE STANDARD TABLE OF tl_hdr.
      GET REFERENCE OF t_hdr INTO l_result_xml-value.
        l_result_xml-name = 'IGRPHDR'.
        APPEND l_result_xml TO t_result_xml.
       TRY.
            CALL TRANSFORMATION yfi_xml_read
            SOURCE XML it_xml_data
            RESULT (t_result_xml).
          CATCH cx_root INTO l_rif_ex.
            l_var_text = l_rif_ex->get_text( ).
            l_bapiret-type = 'E'.
            l_bapiret-message = l_var_text.
            APPEND l_bapiret TO errormsgs.
            EXIT.
        ENDTRY.
    in XSL transformation
       First write a block of statement to specify from which node you are taking the data.
       No matter it is a node or sub-node.
    <xsl:transform xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" version="1.0">
      <xsl:output encoding="iso-8859-1" indent="yes" method="xml" version="1.0"/>

            </IGRPHDR>
      </asx:values>
        </asx:abap>
    </xsl:template>
    Next select the data from the nodes under the nodes specified in the transformation.
    here msgid is the field i am selecting for value.
    <xsl:template match="GrpHdr">
        <item>
          <MSGID>  " field in the internal table t_hdr where data has to go
            <xsl:value-of select="MsgId"/>
          </MSGID>
        </item>

  • How to use the transformation file

    Hello there!
    This message is to ask a question that maybe it could be familiar to you. I want to load data using a .txt file and a transformation file using the import package. Suppose  that the structure of my txt file is:
    Entity,Category,Time,Account1,Account2,Account3
    Ent1,Actual,2010.JAN,289.23,32.43,123.34
    Ent1,Actual,2010.JAN,289.23,32.43,123.34
    Ent1,Actual,2010.JAN,289.23,32.43,123.34
    How could I load this values using a transformation? I know that there exists an option named *MVAL(), but if I use the following syntax in mapping section it doesnu2019t work:
    Account=*MVAL(4:6)
    I read something about accountval, does some boddy knows how to use it?
    Thanks in advance
    regards

    Hi,
    If you are using MVAL statement, then you need to maintain a conversion file also. Its compulsory. Please make sure that you have maintained a conversion file.
    If you are on 7.5 MS, then the statement will work. Please refer to the MVAL statement in the mapping section of the below link
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_bpc75/helpdata/en/a2/e722bc58404335ada8592cdc8feaca/content.htm
    However, in 7.0 MS, the MVAL works only if the multiple key figures are corresponding to the time dimension. In your case, they correspond to the account dimension. You need to create separate transformation file for each of the key figures and then upload the flat file separately using each of the transformation files.
    Hope this helps.

  • Long running mapping when using Mapping Transformations

    Hi,
    I have a source table with 8,000 records which I would like to merge using the update/insert operator into my target table. This simple operation takes 15 sec which I am very happy with. The problem I have is when I try to call a series of Functions using Mapping Transformations - when I do this the performance of the mapping is dire - it now takes longer than 40min!!!
    The strange thing is that when I generate the intermediate result and run the code (not including the Merge in to my Target table) in TOAD, the results come back quickly? So I am not sure if there is a problem with the fact that I am using Mapping Transformations or if I am using a Merge on the Target Table...
    I have taken off Parrallel hints on the target table and applied the relevant indexes.
    I am really lost and any help would be most appreciated.
    Regards
    Mitesh

    If you could let us know what kind of functions you are using? I had experienced the same problem while calling a function using a Mapping Transformation. The functions used a cursor and for every source record these function were getting called and the cursor was opened and closed, which caused a performance bottleneck.
    Better write the functions with direct SQLs and no cursors, if possible or use a temporary table, joiner operator or look up operator to achieve the task.
    This should reduce the execution time considerably.

    If star transformation was not the cause of the slowness, of course it won't make it faster.
    I bet you any number of other different hints will result in no change in performance.
    This is like replacing gas tank on your car with a LARGER tank & filling it with more gasoline to make the car go faster.
    The amount of gasoline is not a factor that limits the speed of your car.
