Using XML PIVOT clause in SQL to generate crosstab report BI Pub. Possible?

I am trying to use the XML version of the Pivot Clause in an SQL query to generate the SQL needed for a cross tabular or Pivot report in BI Publisher. How can I use the output (e.g. below) in BI publisher as the SQL query? It is ignoring the XML column when I view the output in BI. IS this possible and has anyone tried this?
for example
SQL> SELECT *
2 FROM (
3 SELECT deptno, job, sal
4 FROM emp
5 )
6 PIVOT XML
7 (SUM(sal) FOR deptno IN (ANY));
JOB DEPTNO_XML
ANALYST <PivotSet><item><column name = "DEPTNO">20</column><column name = "SUM(SAL)
">6600</column></item></PivotSet>
CLERK <PivotSet><item><column name = "DEPTNO">10</column><column name = "SUM(SAL)
">1430</column></item><item><column name = "DEPTNO">20</column><column name
= "SUM(SAL)">2090</column></item><item><column name = "DEPTNO">30</column>
<column name = "SUM(SAL)">1045</column></item></PivotSet>
MANAGER <PivotSet><item><column name = "DEPTNO">10</column><column name = "SUM(SAL)
">2695</column></item><item><column name = "DEPTNO">20</column><column name
= "SUM(SAL)">3272.5</column></item><item><column name = "DEPTNO">30</colum
n><column name = "SUM(SAL)">3135</column></item></PivotSet>
PRESIDENT <PivotSet><item><column name = "DEPTNO">10</column><column name = "SUM(SAL)
">5500</column></item></PivotSet>
SALESMAN <PivotSet><item><column name = "DEPTNO">30</column><column name = "SUM(SAL)
">6160</column></item></PivotSet>
thanks

Sorry Sunder, you're going to have to work a little harder to get points! I know how the PIVOT clause and all its options work so I don't need documentation on just the SQL. Its how it works in BI that I'm interested in.
I want to use the XML option in the PIVOT clause as I don't want to hard code the crosstab columns. (see my code in the original posting)
I want to know if BI Publisher is able to read the output of the script when creating a report based on an SQL query and generate something that actually looks a crosstab rather than a column of XML. I want my report in BI to look something like the output below. (Sorry about output. I can't get fixed width font working on this forum).

  • Using XML Parser for PL/SQL in 8.1.7

    The XML Parser for PL/SQL is part of 8.1.7,
    which is a good thing.
    Now my question: What steps do I need to
    perfom after installation of 8.1.7 to make
    the parser available for my PL/SQL packages,
    which call
    xmldom.makeNode()
    xmldom.appendChild()
    xmlparser.newParser()
    and other procedures from these packages ?
    The schema SYS does not contain the
    required packages XMLDOM, XMLPARSER, ...
    after installation of 8.1.7.
    Do I have to call loadjava and
    sqlplus @load.sql extra as in 8.1.5 and
    8.1.6 before ?
    Of course I'd like to use the natively
    compiled XML parser
    libjox8_oraclexml_parser_v2.so.
    Doesn't the above loadjava override the
    installation of this fast parser ?
    How can I be safe, that I am using the fast
    parser under the PL/SQL cover ?
    Tnx for your help

    Richard,
    That's weird? The packages were installed when I installed 8.1.7. You can just download the latest version of the XDK and reinstall using loadjava and then running the load.sql file to get the packages in. You should use the -f parameter for loadjava to force the new classes to be loaded over the old ones. For code examples and lots of other good tips on using the XDK, check out my new website for everything Oracle and XML at: www.webspedite.com/oracle.

  • How to write a java function for use in where clause in SQL statement

    Hi,
    Does anyone know a good tutorial on how to write and include a Java class/function into Oracle.
    I'd like to write mathematical function to use in my queries, but the resources available in PL/SQL are very limited.

    Pim,
    I see you got an answer in the PL/SQL forum.
    But in case you haven't seen it, perhaps this Web page will help:

  • Where clause in sql query for updateable report

    Why is the following not working as source for an updateable report ?
    select customer_name from temp_customers
    where customer_type = :my_field;
    How can I make a filter for an updateable report that is based on a field on my page ?
    Greetings Bernd

    Howard,
    The htmldb_item API package allows you to display column values in a report as HTML form fields. You have a choice of different types of form fields. In your example for instance you get a select list by using the function select_list_from_lov. But by simply placing form fields in an HTML page, you don't specify that those fields are actually supposed to update data in a database. You need an after submit process that is actually performing the update.
    You can implement this type of process manually using your own PL/SQL code. Or you can have HTML DB do this for you. If for example you were using the tabular form wizard, you would get an updateable report, including the update process and even including checksum functionality to make sure that you don't overwrite another person's changes (lost update detection).
    If you use the wizard, the report form items use the build-in display types. This means you don't have to do your own calls to htmldb_item as part of your query. It is generally advisable to use the build-in types as they are easier to work with and are only rendered for the rows actually shown as opposed to be rendered for the entire result set.
    If you do choose to use htmldb_item, you'll have to code your own PL/SQL code to perform the updates and you should also include some logic for lost update detection. The HTML DB documentation provides information on how to manually process data from tabular forms.
    Hope this clarifies your question about updateable reports,
    Regards,
    Marc

  • [Forum FAQ] How do i use xml stored in database as dataset in SQL Server Reporting Services?

    Introduction
    There is a scenario that users want to create SSRS report, the xml used to retrieve data for the report is stored in table of database. Since the data source is not of XML type, when we create data source for the report, we could not select XML as Data Source
    type. Is there a way that we can create a dataset that is based on data of XML type, and retrieve report data from the dataset?
    Solution
    In this article, I will demonstrate how to use xml stored in database as dataset in SSRS reports.
    Supposing the original xml stored in database is like below:
    <Customers>
    <Customer ID="11">
    <FirstName>Bobby</FirstName>
    <LastName>Moore</LastName>
    </Customer>
    <Customer ID="20">
    <FirstName>Crystal</FirstName>
    <LastName>Hu</LastName>
    </Customer>
    </Customers>
    Now we can create an SSRS report and use the data of xml type as dataset by following steps:
    In database, create a stored procedure to retrieve the data for the report in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) with the following query:
    CREATE PROCEDURE xml_report
    AS
    DECLARE @xmlDoc XML;
    SELECT @xmlDoc = xmlVal FROM xmlTbl WHERE id=1;
    SELECT T.c.value('(@ID)','int') AS ID,
    T.c.value('(FirstName[1])','varchar(99)') AS firstName,
    T.c.value('(LastName[1])','varchar(99)') AS lastName
    FROM
    @xmlDoc.nodes('/Customers/Customer') T(c)
    GO
    P.S. This is an example for a given structured XML, to retrieve node values from different structured XMLs, you can reference here.
    Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) OR SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT). If this is the first time we have opened SQL Server Data Tools, click Business Intelligence
    Settings for the default environment settings.
    On the File menu, point to New, and then click Project.
    In the Project Types list, click Business Intelligence Projects.
    In the Templates list, click Report Server Project.
    In Name, type project name.
    Click OK to create the project.
    In Solution Explorer, right-click Reports, point to Add, and click New Item.
    In the Add New Item dialog box, under Templates, click Report.
    In Name, type report name and then click Add.
    In the Report Data pane, right-click Data Sources and click Add Data Source.
    For an embedded data source, verify that Embedded connection is selected. From the Type drop-down list, select a data source type; for example, Microsoft SQL Server or OLE DB. Type the connection string directly or click Edit to open the Connection Properties
    dialog box and select Server name and database name from the drop down list.
    For a shared data source, verify that Use shared data source reference is selected, then select a data source from the drop down list.
    Right-click DataSets and click Add Dataset, type a name for the dataset or accept the default name, then check Use a dataset embedded in my report. Select the name of an existing Data source from drop down list. Set Query type to StoredProcedure, then select
    xml_report from drop down list.
    In the Toolbox, click Table, and then click on the design surface.
    In the Report Data pane, expand the dataset we created above to display the fields.
    Drag the fields from the dataset to the cells of the table.

    I have near about 30 matrics. so I need a paging. I did every thing as per this post and it really works for me.
    I have total four columns. On one page it should show three and the remaining one will be moved to next page.
    Problem occurs when in my first row i have 3 columns and in next page if I have one columns then it show proper on first page but on second page also it gives me three columns insted of one. the first column data is exactly what I have but in remaining two
    columns it shows some garbage data.
    I have data like below.
    Metric ColumnNo RowNo
    1 1
    1
    2 2
    1
    3 3
    1
    4 1
    2
    so while grouping i have a row parent group on RowNo and Column group on ColumnNo.
    can anyone please advice on this.

  • With clause in SQL query data model

    Hello!
    isn't it possible to use the with clause in sql query data models?
    for example following query:
    WITH
    a_test as (
    select dummy from dual
    select *
    from a_test
    brings up a "XML Parsing Error: no element found"-error...
    BR Paul

    I tried a slightly different query (see below) and the query worked fine and retrieved data.. I did not get any errors.
    WITH
    a_test as (
    select 'dummy' from dual
    select *
    from a_test
    This works as well.. retrieving the value of the parameter
    WITH
    a_test as (
    select :Test_ID from dual
    select *
    from a_test

  • How to validate XML Digital Signature with XML DB (o PL/SQL) in Oracle 11g

    Hi,
    Do you know if there is possibility to validate XML Digital Signature using XML DB (or PL/SQL) in Oracle 11g?
    Let say I have CLOB/XMLType containing Digitally Signed XML, and I want to validate, that thsi is proper signature. I also have public key of signer (I could store it in CLOB or file or Oracle wallet).
    Is it possible to do?
    If there is need to install additional component - then which one?
    Regards,
    Paweł

    Hi,
    this is what i got from someone...
    but the links he gave are not opening up...
    u have to place a picture there and have to load the digital signatures as Jpegs on to the server to OA top
    and have to refer them in the XML for dynamically get the signature on the reports
    when u select the properties of the picture placed in the XML template,
    there will be one tab with "URL"... in that u have to give the path for that jpegs
    Pls refer the following documents for enabling digital signature on pdf documents.

  • XML Parser for PL/SQL - charset

    Hi,
    I'm using XML Parser for PL/SQL and have some trouble with encoding of results xmldom.writeToBuffer and xmldom.writeToCLOB procedures.
    Some tags in my DOM documents contain text values in RUSSIAN (server nls_charset is CL8ISO8859P5). When I write document in varchar2 variable, buffer content is in UTF8 encoding ( convert UTF8->CL8ISO8859P5 -OK).
    xmldom.setCharset(doc, 'ISO-8859-5') just after xmldom.newDOMDocument has no effect.
    xmldom.setCharset(doc, 'CL8ISO8859P5') has no effect also.
    Explicit charset direction in third parameter of
    xmldom.writeToBuffer and xmldom.writeToCLOB procedure has no effect.
    When I write document in CLOB, and then read part of CLOB in varchar2 buffer - result contain '?' in place of all russian text characters.
    What's a problem?
    How can I force XML Parser write XML in server charset?
    Platform:
    Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.6.1.0
    JServer Release 8.1.6.1.0

    I have the same problem. But in my case I am allowed only to use XML Parser for PL/SQL.
    Characterset 'WE8ISO8859P1' is used. And the language is latvian.
    After parsing a XML document and printing its contents, all latvian characters are replaced by "f".

  • Generating multi-level XML in Oracle 8i using XML-SQL utility

    Oracle 8i has a limitation when it comes to the object types. Only one-level nesting of collection is allowed. Oracle 9i apparently removes this limitation.
    I am trying to generate XML for a hierarchical (conceptually) structure. To do that I am using XML-SQL utility (XSU) running agains an object view build on top of the relational data. The problem is the limit to onelevels of colelction nesting. Oracle 8i gives you a way to create a view with more levels of nesting by using references (REF). The problem is that when XSU runs agains a view with the references, it inserts the references into the XML document (instead of dereferencing them).
    Is there a way to generate XML with Oracle 8i with more than two levels of collection nesting?
    Thank you.

  • Generating an xml from a pl/sql procedure

    Hi Friends,
    I have come up with a requirement to generate an xml from a pl/sql procedure.
    I did some R & D and also got some sample procedures but could not understand the datatypes being used.
    The procedure declares variables like this:
    doc                  xmldom.DOMDocument;
    mainNode         xmldom.DOMNode;
    headerElem      xmldom.DOMElement; Pls could anyone tell what do these xmldom.DOMDocument, xmldom.DOMNode and xmldom.DOMElement mean?
    Later in the procedure, these variables are assigned values like
    doc      := xmldom.newDOMDocument;
    mainNode := xmldom.makenode(doc); This went a bouncer on me.
    Pls help.
    Thanks in advance ...!

  • Can one generate a report in Word document using PL/SQL?

    We have a weekly status report application created in APEX, is there a way to generate a report in MS Word document (including formatting the doc) using PL/SQL by pulling data from Oracle database? Please shed some lights on this and any info and experience would be greatly appreciated.
    We use Oracle11g and apex version 3.1.1.00.09
    Thanks!

    Hi Tony,
    you are right, the NEW format isn't necessarily improved, also the user would need at least Office 2007 or higher.
    Still it is possible to do that ;-)
    And yes, there are other possibilities, but this question is dealing with Word documents (.doc i assume).
    Also my Statement "docx = XML" isn't clear enough. Docx is a zipped file which contains a xml file. Details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Docx
    sorry for the confusions,

  • How to use java to create an XML document from an SQL database?

    Hi,
    I'm a complete novice at XML and have only recently started programming in Java.
    I'm currently trying to develop a package in Java 1.1.8 which requires a set of very specifically formatted XML documents. These documents would need to be updated regularly by people with no knowledge of Java and I would like to make it as simple as possible.
    Since the data will already be in an SQL database, I thought it might be possible to generate the XML documents from the data using a small Java application, but I'm not too sure how to go about this or if this is even possible! Any help or pointers in the right direction would be very much appreciated.

    Do you have the option of upgrading to a newer version of the JDK?
    JAXB does what you are wanting very easily. Also there are tools if you don't want to write your own. JAXB is available as early release on Sun's site as is the newest JDK. Otherwise, you have to design a factory and interface that will do this for you (which is what JAXB basically is in a very simplified view).

  • Using XML based output of rq*Eval() for generating graphical views

    I've been trying the standard example used in training manuals of generating RandomRedDots.
    (Scripts that donot involve images are working fine)
    While using rqTableEval() the output format
    1. using select clause (select cast(value as longvarchar(32000)) from dual)
    2. 'png'
    is throwing ORA-29400: data cartridge error
    ORA-24333: zero iteration count
    ORA-06512: at "RQSYS.RQTABLEEVALIMPL", line 7
    ORA-06512: at line 4
    3. 'xml' type is generating output as desired with two columns name, value.
    When this xml query is used in physical table with columns - name as int, value as longvarchar(32000) as output is clob ,
    the execution(view data) results as 'no data'.
    Can i get help in how to utilize this xml output so that graphs can be made available in obiee dashboard ultimately.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    R script to be executed is as follows:
    begin
    sys.rqScriptDrop('Example6');
    sys.rqScriptCreate('Example6',
    'function(n){
         res<-1:10
    plot( 1:n, rnorm(n), pch = 21,
    bg = "red", cex = 2 )
         res
    end;
    set long 20000
    set pages 1000
    select id,image
    from table(rqTableEval(
    cursor(select 100 n from dual),
    NULL,
    'PNG',
    'Example6'));
    ERROR message:
    select id,image
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-29400: data cartridge error
    ORA-24333: zero iteration count
    ORA-06512: at "RQSYS.RQTABLEEVALIMPL", line 7
    ORA-06512: at line 4
    when tried with xml as output format since 'png' was not working
    select name,value
    from table(rqTableEval(
    cursor(select 100 n from dual),
    NULL,
    'XML',
    'Example6'))
    there is xml output in sqlplus
    NAME
    VALUE
    <root><R-data><vector_obj> <ROW-vector_obj><value>1</value></ROW-vector_obj><ROW
    -vector_obj><value>2</value></ROW-vector_obj><ROW-vector_obj><value>3</value></R.......so on
    How to utilize this output in physical layer of rpd, in table with select clause
    I tried select dbms_lob.substr(value,100000,1) to convert the clob of xml to varbinary but then there is no output in sqlplus.
    If the above is used as select clause for physical table it throws ORA:00904 "value" invalid identifier.
    Can I please get help in getting this output in physical layer tables and eventually to presentation layer.
    Have i missed something or some configuration needs to be done for acquiring the images
    (ps: this is occurring for images and scripts involving number type are working fine.
    I've included png and other packages in RProfile.site file)
