UTF-8 support in Oracle 8.1.6

In order to use UTF-8 encoding(for chinese language), do I need to use Oracle 8.1.7, or is 8.1.6 enough ?

Hi satish,
Can we use UTF-8 for 'Indian' charcter sets like DevNagari? It
is given in the documentation but when I tried it actually using
then I can't insert values into tables with nvarchar or nchar
columns.
Pls revert if u have used this.
Manoj.

    Hello All,
I am using OracleAS for portal deployment and portlets UI constructed by using jstl.
i have used spring portlet jstl for the jsp pages.
when i am trying to change the language, it is showing '?????' symbols.
I have used correct unicode. i tested in pluto portal server. when i deployed in oracleAS,
for english not a problem. for arabic it is showing as '????'.
i have used this code to get arabic in pluto. same code i used. i am getting error.
    <c:set target="${pageContext.response}" property="characterEncoding" value="UTF-8" />
    <fmt:setLocale value="ar" />
    <fmt:requestEncoding value="UTF-8" />
i know it is not setting charector encoding.
i tried some other too like:
    <head>

    <%@ page pageEncoding="UTF-8" %>
No improvement. please help me out of this.
how can i get arabic support in oracle AS by using jstl?

Only Apple Account Security could help at this point. You can try calling Apple Support in Canada - you'll have to find one of the several ways, such as Skype, to call an 800 number from outside of the relevant country - and ask for Account Security and see if they can help. Or you can find a friend who speaks Chinese and ask them to help you talk to Apple Support in China. There are really no other options that I know of.
Note, by the way, that these are user-to-user support forums. You aren't speaking with Apple when you post here.

  • UTF8 support in Oracle Lite

I looks to me like Oracle Lite doesn't support the UTF8 character set for storing data. Is this correct?
I have an Oracle 8.1.7 database using UTF8 to store English, Thai, Chinese and Philippino data, and I want to synchronise that with Oracle Lite on Windows 2000 clients. The sync seems to work ok, but any non-english characters are lost in a characterset conversion (display as "?").
    Regards
    Steve

I'm a bit confused by your reply. Can Oracle Lite store data in a unicode characterset such as UTF8? It looks to me like the "UTF-8 support" is limited to the drivers, so that it can load and extract utf-8 data, but not store it. From section 2.2.1 of the release notes:
"Oracle Lite Database is NOT a NLS component. In order to reduce the kernel size, it is built for each language which supports native character sets for Windows. Which means, each language has each kernel. Here are the character sets supported by this release:
    - Chinese: MS936 CodePage (Simplified Chinese GBK, ZHS)
    - Taiwanese: MS950 CodePage (Traditional Chinese BIG5, ZHT)
    - Japanese: MS932 CodePage (Japanese Shift-JIS, JA)
    - Korean: MS949 CodePage (Korean, Ko)
The database kernel for each language in this list only supports its corresponding character set. Other multibyte character sets are not supported."
Also the documentation on the DBCharEncoding parameter you mention suggests that it only affects the UTF translation for java programs. Section A.2.3:
"... Specifies the UTF translation performed by Oracle Lite. If set to NATIVE, no UTF translation is performed. If set to UTF8, UTF translation is performed. If this parameter is not specified, the default is UTF8. This applies to Java programs only."
I've tried playing with these parameters, as well as changing the NLS_LANG parameter on the client, and for the mobile server, for the Oracle Lite home, all to no avail. I'm still losing the non-english data during synchronisation and it does look like it's being lost in a character set conversion rather than just being garbled, as each Thai characters is being replaced by the correct number of "?"s. As an example the Thai string "&#3610;&#3619;&#3636;&#3625;&#3633;&#3607; &#3610;&#3619;&#3634;&#3648;&#3604;&#3629;&#3619;&#3660; &#3588;&#3629;&#3617;&#3648;&#3617;&#3629;&#3619;&#3660;&#3648;&#3594;&#3637;&#3656;&#3618;&#3621; (&#3611;&#3619;&#3632;&#3648;&#3607;&#3624;&#3652;&#3607;&#3618;) &#3592;&#3635;&#3585;&#3633;&#3604;" on the 8.1.7 database sever appears as "?????? ???????? ?????????????? (?????????) ?????" on the oracle lite database.
Am I missing something here? If I can get this data syncronising correctly then Oracle Lite looks like it will support all our requirments so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. (Should I post this to the globilization forum or does that focus only on Oracle's enterprise editions?)
BTW, thanks for the info on the sorting. Obviously the characterset issue is more a fundamental problem at this stage, but if we can fix this then it's good to know about the sorting abilities.

  • Details on TAF support in Oracle AS 10g

    Hi experts,
I'm currently writing a Master's Thesis on High Availability of Applications based on Sun’s JEE platform.
With Oracle being one of the big players in this market I'm going to investigate the features of the Oracle product stack and compare it with other solutions including opensource.
At the moment I'm looking for details on TAF-support in Oracle AS 10g. Let’s assume one has installed the latest release of the Oracle 10g database in a RAC configuration on two or more physical nodes to store the applications data. Let’s further assume one has set up the latest release of the Oracle AS 10g on different hosts building an AS farm with clustered OC4J-instances. Now one would like to connect a JEE application running within these OC4J-instances to the RAC database.
Therefore one can configure an OC4J datasource to use a service definition supporting network failover and transparent application failover (TAF) specified in the tnsnames.ora on the AS hosts or directly describe the service in the data-sources.xml. To my knowledge only datasources configured to use the OCI client can be used with TAF. Everything right so far?
Now the interesting part. The best what TAF can do is automatically reconnect to the next known database node if it’s current node is not reachable or fails, and continue processing an open cursor for select so that the application can continue to use it’s current connection.
If the application is running a database transaction it can only be rolled back and rerun after failover.
In a good old plain Java application one had to implement the OracleOCIFailover interface and register a callback with the db connection in order to receive failover events. Therefore you need to process the query in a different thread.
In a JEE server only the container should be responsible for creating threads, or? How does the Oracle AS support TAF? How can a user application get notice of a failover and react appropriately. Is the behaviour always the same no matter one decides to implement the data access via simple DAOs or entity beans (CMP/BMP)? I assume it is safe to use a connection pool and container will take care of the necessary cleanup jobs, right? Will the complete connection pool be reconstructed or only connections to the failed node?
Does the application server internally use these OCI callbacks and wrap them up into special Exceptions? Is there anything an application programmer has to do in order to make his data access code ready for TAF, especially in case of failover while the db is processing transactional code?
Any insights and/or code snippets would be greatly appreciated!
Ah, one last question. From a HA perspective is it generally a bad idea to put application logic into the database (use CDM RuleFrame and so on) as there is no support in preserving package states or do you think this makes no difference as one has always to repeat everything since the last commit point no matter in which tier the code resides?
During the next days I’m going to set up the above environment for testing. A 10.0.2.1 RAC on RHE4 is already up and running fine. AS 10.1.3.0.0 on RHE4 is following today or tomorrow.
    Many thanks for all answers!
    Regards,
    Eric

    Hi,
well, I thought I could dig into the OC4J documentation before installing the server. After reading the OC4J Service Guide for 10.1.2 and 10.1.3 I'm a little bit confused.
First I read the 10.1.2 Service Guide and almost everything seemed to be clear. I found a lot of answers to the questions above. I'd like to sum them up. Please correct me if I got something wrong!
    - TAF only works on top of OCI driver
    - TAF can be used with connection pooling
    - OC4J takes care of connection pool cleanup (OC4J and OCI Pool)
These two pools are mentioned. It's not clear to me how they work together. Do one of you know some source where I can get more information about this?
    - after a failover all connections in the pool are checked by OC4J and only alive ones will survive
    - in case of a failover TAF issues an exception
    - the application has to catch this exception and acknowledge with a rollback, after that the transaction can be restarted (this seems to be the responsibility of the applications code, oc4j will not replay something automatically; If I got it right, CMP entity beans will be an exception to this rule - there OC4J will proceed transparently...)
    - the application can use OCI callbacks to customize the failover behavior (well I would like to see some source code example here, as I can't imagine how this could look like)
After that I read the 10.1.3 service guide. The section about datasources in conjunction with HA is much shorter. Besides TAF new? mechanism is introduced, namely Fast Connection Failover (FCF). There is not much information about it but references to the JDBC Guide, because FCF is a feature of the implicit JDBC connection cache. Where cache seems to be just another word for pool.
By the way, the example on p. 4-36 looks wrong at first glance. Enabling FCF and setting:
    <property name="fastConnectionFailoverEnabled" value="false"/> ???
Seems to be a typo in the docu, or?
I got the impression, that the text is written as if FCF being TAF's successor, without explicitly saying this. Is this right?
So I proceeded reading the JDBC Developer Guide to lean more about FCF. Here is what I learned:
    - since 10g available
    - FCF is driver independend (you can also use the thin driver)
    - prerequisites are implicit connection cache (pool) enabled, ONS must be configured
    - in case of a failover the transcation will be rolled back automatically (not by the application); whereas using TAF you have to use a rollback to acknowledge the error
    - only one exception ORA-17008 to catch
    - application has to obtain a new connection from the cache (pool), where as using TAF the old connection object can be used, and resend the transaction (same as with TAF)
So when to use what? The comparison on p. 27-8 was not very helpful to find an answer to this question.
On p. 28-1 one can read that TAF does not work with the OCI Connection Pool. That's seems to be contradictory to the statement in Service Guide of 10.1.2 that OC4J takes care of both pools (OC4J and OCI). Or has something changed in 10.1.3 in that regard? May be this is because of the changes in Cache or Pool Management?
What is the advantage of using TAF within OC4J in 10g, if there is any?
What about select statements with FCF? You can only read about transactions. I'd assume the application would get the same exception executing a query (ORA-17008) as executing a transaction, right? So TAF should have the advantage of transparently proceeding selects after a failover. Am I right?
I'd love to see more examples and comparisons of TAF and FCF.
    Regards,
    Eric

  • Steps to UTF-8 Encoding with Oracle 8i and Weblogic 6.1SP1

What are the Steps to UTF-8 Encoding with Oracle 8i and Weblogic
              6.1SP1?
              I have:
              - Oracle 8.1.5 database created with character set=UTF8 and national
              character set=UTF8
              - Weblogic 6.1SP1 without any encoding mechanism set
              (though I did play with
              <jsp-param><param-name>encoding</param-name>
              <param-value>UTF-8</param-value>
              </jsp-param>
in the weblogic.xml for a while though it seemed not to make a
              difference)
              - JSP pages set to content='text/html; charset=UTF-8'
              - JSP form POSTs set to enctype="UTF-8"
I can copy and paste Chinese Kanji from a UTF8 encoded web page into
form text boxes but when I post the data it comes back as different
Kanji. Then once it is posted the Kanji stays the same on repeated
posts. The same Kanji text also looks different when viewed in a form
text box than when viewed as straight text on the page.
Is there anything else? Or am I already encoding characters twice?
              Please help!

    Hi,
I don't know if this can help you, but I had a similar problem while invoking a web service. Eventually, I found out that the server was returning an html error page, and not the expected xml answer.
That's why the client code raises such an error... It means that the MIME type of the anser is text/html (for the html page) and not the text/xml type of the 'nominal' web service answer.
You can verify this by using a proxy to intercept the http request and answer involved in this web service invocation (use Fiddler for instance). Then, you will see that the server responds by sending an html page saying that something is wrong.
    Hope this helps...

  • [SOLVED] Is full UTF-8 supported in unicode-rxvt?

Does urxvt have full UTF-8 support, or it only supports 16 bit unicode characters?
I have set inconsolata font for URXVT adding to .Xdefaults this line: URxvt*font: xft: Inconsolata:pixelsize=17:antialias=True:hinting=True
I can write most characters, like á, ñ, etc. But It looks like characters with codes greater than 16 bits are not printed. E.g.:
    - If I open XFCE Terminal (also configured to use Inconsolata font) and input: [CTRL]+[SHIFT]+U,1F600, it outputs the smiling face.
    - If I open urxvt ant while holding [CTRL]+[SHIFT] type 1F600, only an empty rectangle is shown.
The same happens for other characters I have tested with codes greater than 16 bit. It works flawlessly though with 16 bit codes. Is there a way to make these characters to work? I need the smileys because of the telegram CLI client...

  • UTF-16 support

I'd like to determine what non-Latin characters can be displayed on my handset. Using the encoding UTF-16BE does not throw an exception and I can create Latin characters and basic symbols. However when I try Greek, Hebrew, and such the generated strings are blank.
I understand that full UTF-16 support is the manufacturer's preference, however these characters are displayed elsewhere in the UI (e.g. if I change languages). What's more, I've been told the phone UI is written in Java, though I can't confirm.
I imagine the problem could be a one of several levels:
    1. The extended characters are accessible through some other encoding, just not UTF-16.
    2. My code uses LWUIT, perhaps it cannot render these characters.
    3. Extended characters aren't supported on the phone's JVM even though the native UI uses them.

    Dude,
UTF-8: I'm looking to represent Asian symbols so unless I'm horribly wrong those aren't in UTF-8.Please have a look at [this UTF8 table|http://www.atm.ox.ac.uk/user/iwi/charmap.html] At my work place we have software that uses Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Greek, Russian and few more and all are achieved using UTF8.
Source values: I've dumbed it down as much as possible, by creating hard coded strings with various byte values. I can be confident in the syntax, endianness, and signed byte issues because a the Latin portion of UTF-16BE works fine. Does it mean that your string has value similar to: u023f,u002d,... and you do parsing of that to a byte array and then creating the String object by using this byte array and correct encoding identifier? Or do you hardcode the string you want to display using the actual characters? In second approach you have to make absolutely sure that your code editor or IDE (Eclipse, Netbeans, ...) use exactly the encoding that you are trying to achieve. Even when the text is correctly displayed on the computer screen does not guarantee that it will be saved and read using the same encoding, which you can appreciate is essential here.
Again I urge to use the UTF8 encoding in order to be sure about the font support. It is the simplest to implement of all Unicodes and for that reason vendors would choose it over any UTF-16.
Java native UI: This is just hearsay I've picked up. If this is the case, it's plausible that Samsung is running a JVM for the UI and another for client games and apps. It certainly makes sense from a mfg cost standpoint. It's sorta immaterial, other than being definite proof that the extended encoding exists in the Java libraries.JVM is a quite sizeable thing to run in order to get the UI. What would be the scenario if your Java UI threw an exception? I am not native app/UI expert, but unless Java is a integral part of the core system (like in Android), UI stays native. Again, I might be wrong here at it really does not matter in the context of your problem.

  • NLS SUPPORT FOR ORACLE 8I

I am trying to use the NLS support of Oracle 8i on windows
Nt/2000 platforms. I have tried configuring the database
characterset and the national character set as 'IN8ISCII' - the
one prescribed in the NLS documentation for India territory and
Hindi as NLS Language and territory parameters. I have also
tried configuring them as 'UTF8' a character set prescribed for
unicode /universal 8 bits ASCII character sets but i am not able
to insert any rows with these charactersets in NCHAR or NVARCHAR
columns. if i try to insert them in regualr char pr varchar
columns i can insert in the ascii formats and I have to retreive
them on front end through different mask format fonts.
If any one have tried the NLS support pls let me know how to
insert the records and retreive thenm in the national language..
    Thanks in advance..

  • How to incorporate a Language that is not supported in Oracle Portal

    Hi,
I want to know the preferred way to add support for a new language in Oracle Portal.
If a language is not supported in Oracle Portal, how I can add the content for that language in the Portal?
    Please advise.
    Best Wishes.

I've seen this in a statement of direction presentation as an enhancement for R11. So this should be a R11 feature. In the meantime you might investigate the NLS views and tables and try to find a way to extend this. BUT just in an emergency case and you have to know that is not supported (also you may lose support in general for this installation when hacking the repository). So I cannot recommend this with a clear conscience. You have to know exactly what you're doing.
You can also open a SR to get an official statement from support. Maybe there's a note for this.

  • JDK/JRE Version support for Oracle Lite

    Hi,
We have developed an application using jdk 1.4.x which also using Oracle9i Lite 5.0.2 release as a database. Application behaves normal except while closing it throws java exception (Exceptio Guard Page Exception) error.
Is it because of the JDK Version we are using? What is the JDK/JRE version level supported by Oracle Lite.
    Thanks
    Krishna

    Right
I got the same problem too.
When my program and oracle 9i lite is running under JRE1.3.1, everything is ok.
However, when i migrate the jre to 1.4.x, the program must fail and report DLL exception after closing.
    So trouble~!

  • Is Forté UDS version 5.1.3 supported on Oracle 10?

    Hi,
in the company I work in we've got applications developed in Forté UDS 5.1.3 and we've got Oracle 8.1.7
We're going to change Oracle version and we'd like to upgrade towards Oracle 10.
Someone has told me Forté UDS 5.1.3 is only supported on Oracle 9 and not on Oracle 10. Do you agree with that? Can you help me to undestand whether it's true or not?
    Thanks in advance!

There are documentation and certification matixes provided at http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/coll/S1_UnifiedDevelopmentServer_35
Why not look there.. and contact Sun support to clarify?
From a pure client-server perspective - the Forte database interface for Oracle supports need to support OCI (or JDBC) as communication interface to Oracle. The question thus is whether or not this interface can use the later OCI driver versions (9i, 10g, 11g). As a 9i OCI client can for example connect successfully to a 10g or 11g database instance, Forte can likely be used with such a client to connect to a newer Oracle version.
