UTIL FILE error

Hi,
I get the error '-29285-->ORA-29285: file write error'
Database is 10gR2.
My code section is as follows
var_object number;
l_file_name varchar2(100) := 'File1.data';
l_file_path varchar2(100) := 'FILEDIR';
file1 utl_file.file_type;
BEGIN
file1 := utl_file.fopen(l_file_path,l_file_name,'w');
for tab in c1
loop
var_object := tab.object;
utl_file.putf(file1,var_object);
end loop;
utl_file.fclose(file1);
End;

does FILEDIR exists? is it pointing to an existing file?
give me output on
select DIRECTORY_PATH from dba_directories where DIRECTORY_NAME='FILEDIR';
if you retrieve a path, try in unix
cd -P FILEDIR
pwd
ls -lad File1.data .
