UVerse and E4200 v1

I have my e4200 connected behind my Uverse RG (3801HGV).  It is connected properly following instructions at post 2 from:
http://forums.att.com/t5/Residential-Gateway/U-verse-for-BUSINESS-2Wire-3600HGV-bridge-mode-or-anoth...
I have had to turn off the 5Ghz network due to issues of intermittently losing router network.  For some reason, the 2.4ghz works consistently and is more stable.  Had issues with new ipad connections, etc.  Not the subject for this question, but am happy to share with others what my experience has been.
The problem relates to speed.
I have  uverse max (upload speeds up to 12, download of 1.5).
When I connect wirelessly to the 2Wire RG with ipad I get  10.48, 1.2 and ping of 42.
When I connect to home router wirelessly 10.29, 0.34 and ping of 47.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why the RG - E4200 connection is a bottleneck for uploading.  This is important as I have wireless IP cams and a NAS from which I'd like to stream outside the house.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would check to see if I had correct MTU. I would also put 5Ghz on auto channel with 20 and 40 width, and I would make sure the media prioritazion is reset. Or adjust the settings on media priorization to 3 Mbps (3000 Kbps) upload.

  • New internet provider (moved from Comcast to Uverse) and I can't get my new network to stay put, and I can't get my Time Capsule to stop blinking yellow

I have moved from Comcast to Uverse, and can't get my TIme Capsule to stop blinking yellow.  I know it isn't updating.  Additionally, I can't get my computer to recognize the 'new' wireless network.  It keeps changing back to the 'old' network.

You have two separate issues here. although both were created with the recent changes on your network.
Find out why the Time Capsule is blinking amber as follows:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click directly on the the Time Capsule icon
Click directly on the amber dot....and another window will open to explain more about the issue...along with suggested actions that you can take to remedy the issue.
If you want your Mac to connect first to the "new" network....
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Network
Click on WiFi on the left
Click Advanced at the lower right
Make sure that the name of the network that you want the Mac to connect to first appears at the top of the connection order list. Drag the name to the top if it is not there now.
    Click OK
    Click Apply
Now your Mac will attemp to connect first to the network that you positioned at the top of the connection order list.

  • Airport wifi problems with uverse and gigabit switch resolved

I think there is a bug in airport firmware 7.6 with how spanning tree works in addition to problems with the Uverse router. Having an Airport with a uverse 2wire 3801 and gigabit switch will not work. Putting the extreme in NAT mode with DMZ plus behind the uverse resolved the problem.
    Network configuration:
    Uverse 2wire 3801 router
3801 provides prioritization for upstream traffic so skype and VoIP work better when doing a lot of stuff on Internet
    Airport extreme firmware 7.6
two airport express 802.11n hardwired to extreme. Set up in bridge mode. All access points have same SSID "create a network" to enable roaming. Ignore anything to do with extending a network.  firmware 7.6
    two gigabit switches
        Netgear GS608 - 8 port gigabit switch
        Trendnet TEG-S80g - 8 port gigabit switch
100BT 5 port switch - did not figure into problem
Three Uverse set top boxes wired on Ethernet. They have to be wire directly to the 2wire box to work correctly. See: http://forums.att.com/t5/Features-and-How-To/At-amp-t-U-Verse-modem-setup-Airpor t-Extreme/td-p/2300785
However, you need to be careful to place your own PCs and other internet devices on the network created by your gear (airport extreme in your case), but keep AT&T's set top boxes for the IPTV services IN FRONT of your own router - so they remain on AT&T's provided network.
So it would work like this ...
Network 1: 2wire RG (4 lan ports) ->  Any Set tops, and to the WAN port on your AirportExtreme
Network 2: Airport Extreme LAN ports -> to any computers or internet devices (but not AT&T set top boxes).
The RG prioritizes the traffic for your Uverse Voice and your Uverse TV ahead of internet data traffic, as it rationalizes data heading out of your home.  If you place your own equipment in that equation (like putting AT&T set top boxes behind your Airport Extreme) the performance and function of your AT&T set top boxes could really flake out on you.
    Symptom:
Everything would be working fine, then intermittently all my wifi access points would stop working. ~6,000 ms latency, dropped packets. Ethernet worked fine. Here is an example of my macbook pinging the extreme when associated with the extreme over wifi with a strong signal.

    Root cause:
It looks like the 2wire 2801 router has a problem with spanning tree when interoperating with gigabit switches and airports. There is interplay with the airport.
I did not have this problem until the 7.6 airport firmware. I had been using the Netgear hub for about a year with the extreme in bridge mode. I added the Trendnet hub and upgraded airport firmware at the same time which made fault isolation difficult.
    Problem recreation:
Set up airport expresses hard wired to extreme
Connect gigabit switch anywhere to network
    Everything OK
Dettach one computer from wifi then reattach, then all wifi stops working. It takes a few seconds for the problem to propagate.
    Ethernet still works fine
    Problem Resolution:
    Connect to 2wire with ethernet
Set 2wire route to have subnet as 192.168.2.x
Set extreme in NAT mode behind 2wire. It will complain about double NAT. Override the warning. Set the subnet to 192.168.1.x so you don't have to change any static IP addresses. Note that 2wire uses 192.168.1.254 as default route whereas airport uses 192.168.1.1.
I set DHCP to start at .10 to leave the lower addresses for assigning static IP addresses to computers I want to expose outside the firewall.
Go into firewall settings. Select airport extreme. Select the bottom setting which is "DMZ Plus". When you go into the airport extreme settings, you will now see that it has the uverse public IP address on its WAN port. NAT port mappings work fine on the extreme behind the 2wire router.

Keeping this very short here is a summary of the actual problem and solution to allow your Apple Airport Extreme to run in Bridge mode on the same subnet as your uVerse settop boxes (if your Layer 2 switch is configurable).
Devices: Uverse, Cisco SG300, and Airport Extreme
uVerse uses Multicast to broadcast video streams between the uVerse network to the settop box, and from settop box to settop box.
X number of Multicast Groups are created based on X number of settop boxes you have.  You can see the multicast definitions by logging into the webinterface of the iNid. Each settop box is a member and can choose to display a broadcasted TV stream or not.
Multicast membership is setup by the use of ICMP messages for IPv4 (MLD for IPv6).  Each of the settop boxes become members of each others multicast group by reporting up to the iNid (MultiCast Proxy).
In an ideal world a layer 2 switch will track these memberships and only forward a broadcast packet to the ports on the switch to which the settop boxes are connected to.  The switch would do these via snooping on the ICMP packets.  Most switches by default do not do this by default and simply forward the broadcast packett out every one of it's switch ports.
Here in lies the problem.  Problem is that the Apple AES doesn’t do ICMP snooping / filtering and floods the wireless network with these broadcast streams.
In order to fix this you must turn on ICMP snooping and filtering on the switch (or buy a switch that does this).  I have a Cisco SG300 and list out the configuration below.
    Other notes:
Ensure that all Media renderers (settop boxes) and servers are wired directly off the switch and not attached to any of the Airport Express ports.  This way no media transverses the Airport (only control point traffic goes through the WiFi - which is fine).  Obviously if the IGMP snooping switch sees any client requesting Multicast streaming traffic on the same port as the WAP, it will add that Multicast address to the forwarding table for that port, and then, yes it could get flooded.
Remember, you need to allow some Multicast traffic through your WAP to allow UPnP discovery to work (assuming that you will be using Wireless control points.)
Read the Multicast chapter in the SG 300 switch Admin Guide as it explains things very well.
Setting up multicast on the SG300s using the WebUI:
    1. Multicast/Properties/
Tick enable Bridge Multicast Filtering Status for VLAN 1, and
set the Forwarding Method to IP Group Address for both IPv4 & IPv6.
    2. Multicast/ IGMP snooping/
Tick enable IGMP snooping status then select and edit the entry and ensure that IGMP querier status is ticked.
It's essential for IGMP snooping to work that there must be at least one active IGMP querier on the network - if more than one is enabled, they will carry out an "election" to decide which one should be active (normally the one with the lowest IP address.)
    3. Multicast Router Port
Set whichever port that is connected to the uVerse iNid to Status which means that it the uVerse router connected to this port is the Multicast Router
    4. Multicast/ Unregistered Multicast
set all ports to Filtering. (The default is Forwarding.)
There are a lot of other variables within all the above - the defaults are OK, you should probably leave them alone!
In the config file you would then expect to see the above appearing as something like this:
    ip igmp snooping
    ip igmp snooping vlan 1
ip igmp snooping vlan 1 immediate-leave
    interface vlan 1
    bridge multicast mode ipv4-group
    bridge multicast ipv6 mode ip-group
    interface range gi1-10
    bridge multicast unregistered filtering
ip igmp snooping vlan 1 querier
ip igmp snooping vlan 1 querier address <IP-Addr>

  • Att Uverse and new Apple TV

So I just got Apple TV in the mail today.  I was all ready to see what it was all about before I realized that I didnt have the cords to make all the connections.  I do have a HDTV with 1 extra HDMI port open.  I also have ATT uverse.  I heard there was a lot of problems with Uverse.  I have TV and Internet with Uverse connected by coaxial cable.
What cords do I need?  I know I need a HDMI cable, but would I need an ethernet cable?  Would it work better being connected to ethernet? Do I need an optical digital audio cable?  Im not even sure what that is.  Thanks for help

While I have a PC, I went through exactly the same problem you are having. No matter what I did, I could not get it to see the device. After clicking on pretty much every possible link, I found a message stating iTunes could not see Apple TV because the Bonjour service was not enabled. Only problem was ... there is nowhere to enable Bonjour + searching for this word through Apple's help had no results. It wasn't until I Googled it that I found a link to download the program (which the book never mentions by the way). The link ironically leads back to Apple's site. Once downloaded, it saw it immediately and worked fine. While a Mac is configured different, it sounds like you need the Mac version of this software.

  • Guest and E4200 - Mac Filtering

I have an e4200 v1. I have figured out that if mac filtering is enabled, the guest feature will only work if the mac adapter of the guest client is added to the list of allowed mac filters.
Doesnt adding a mac filter for guests defeat the whole purpose of the guest account? I find this very annoying. Does somebody know of a way to get this to work?

Don't use the wireless mac filter. It won't provide security anyway. Use WPA2 with AES and a strong passphrase.

  • Proxy use with uverse and mac

    Hi,
I'm trying to use a proxy (BTGuard) with my Mac Mini and MacBook that are connected to a 2wire 3800HGV-B (Uverse). I've tried opening the ports that the proxy is using to no avail. When I try it as a PC (running Paralells) is works fine, which leads me to beleive the Macs are not getting along with the 2wire. Would opening the 2wire on DMZPlus to an Airport Extreme resolve this issue? Any help would be appreciated. I hate running Paralells. Thanks!

If you are accessing GMail via IMAP labels can be configured like Mailboxes, and you can still use SmartMailboxes on your Mac. If you enable the Advanced IMAP controls in GMail's web interface you can configure which Labels/Mailboxes appear in IMAP email clients. And in Mac OS X Mail you can map Mail's default folders to GMails folders so everything stays in sync.
Have a read of the link below to see if it answers some of your concerns:
    http://complexdiagrams.com/2009/01/19/imap-for-gmail-mailapp-iphone/
Why do you think you need an official GMail app? The email client that comes with the iPhone works fine with GMail. And there's the official web app.

  • ATT Uverse and TC - wireless G vs N

    Hello all,
I have the typical 2-wire ATT wireless G modem/router and recently purchased a time capsule.  I have an older house that has qutie a bit of stone, and I have found that penetration of the wireless G signal from the ATT/Uverse router has been quite poor in my home.  I've bugged ATT about this a ton, but they still claim to not offer any wireless N devices.
With the purchase of my TC, I have had the idea of perhaps creating a 2nd network with the TC that would allow me to take advantage of the wireless N connectivity thoughout my home.  Currently, I have the TC connected via an ethernet cable from the WAN connector to the 2wire modem/router.  My IT director at work suggested that I use the TC to create a separate network with the TC that broadcasts wireless N and I could "ignore" the wireless G signal this way.  However, after doing this, I am getting a double NAT warning, although both networks seem to be functioning at the moment.  However, the wireless G network oddly enough seems to have better signal at the moment.
My settings are below, but I am wondering if anyone has a good solution to my problem.  Thanks.

If in Bridge mode, I'll be using the ATT/Uverse router's wireless network but I'll be able to use the wireless N frequencies transmitted by the TC?
Your devices will actually use either one, depending on which it latches on to. The algorithm it uses takes some explaining but suffice it to say that it will be an improvement. Just be sure to specify the same exact network name and security on both the TC and 2wire. Your network will appear to be unchanged from using only the 2wire's, it will just have a larger area.
How large depends on how far apart you are willing to separate the 2wire and Time Capsule - while keeping them connected with your Ethernet cable.
As a corollary, with wireless devices capable of running at "N" speeds, will I be limited to "G" speeds because I won't be using the TC as a primary source of the network?
No. That is the advantage of the Time Capsule's simultaneous dual band feature. Its two wireless bands operate completely apart from one another, and are "bridged" or tied together in the Time Capsule.
If you have an iPad or an iPhone 5 for example, you can elect to have them use the "n" network exclusively, while older devices can continue to use the "g" network at the slower speeds they require.

  • ATT Uverse and Mac Mail not sending emails!

I've read through all the other discussion topics pertaining to this and tried them all, adding and deleting accounts, setting up my account preferences according to the Uverse help page but nothing seems to work. I can receive emails fine but sending emails doesn't work any more. We just had Uverse installed less than 24 hours ago and ATT tech support won't help me out unless I pay $50! Are you kidding me? Because Mac Mail is a 3rd party app they won't help me solve this annoying issue, they've told me to just use their web mail program instead. I'm not sure what to do at this point, does anyone have some info that may help me out here?

AT&T U-Verse (uverse), as of July 2014, requires that you verify your non-AT&T mail accounts before they allow you to send outgoing non-AT&T mail.
Here's how to verify your non-AT&T mail accounts and link them to your AT&T U-verse account
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22291865
Log into your AT&T U-verse webmail att.net email account (e.g. Yahoo mail)
    > click the gear at upper right of screen next to your name
Navigate to Settings > Accounts > Add
Add your non-AT&T mail accounts/  Enter info they require
U-verse will send a verification email to those mail accounts.
After you reply and verify your identity, you will be able to send outgoing email for those accounts via Mail, so long
    as you have Mail configured.

  • Connecting uverse and direct tv

I was told that if I connected an hdmi cable to my Internet box and direct tv box I could get more free channels but there is no hdmi port on the uverse box. Was I told wrong or require something else?

    Who told you that?

  • Att Uverse and Roku

so when i go to lifetime on roku and it gives me a code so I can unlock a show or movie by going online at the mylifetime.com/activate and it tells me to pick my tv provider.... who do i choose because i dont see att or uverse on the list.

This is kind of complicated. Do you know if Roku is supposed to include access to the various content.
What I am trying to say is watching streaming requires two things - physical access such as a computer or Roku and authorized access, such as asking your provider.
I am thinking that Roku is supposed to provide both because people had Roku long before cable providers started offering streaming.
Do you have a Roku choice when it asks for a provider. You can also follow up with Roku.
You can access uverse.com via a browser on a computer & find lifetime there. But Roku does not have a browser?? You could connect your computer to display on your TV.
Maybe someone who has Roku with u-verse can straighten this out. The problem is people without problems do not visit the forum.
I loked at the Roku site & see that they do have free, pay (like netflix) & networks that can be tied to cable provider. They say check the network for how to get access.
I looked at lifetime & do not see anything about Roku. It does say, sign in for a free trial.
Not easy to put the pieces together.

  • At my wit's end with ATT UVerse and Time Capsule

I'm going to try this one last thread before I return all my UVerse stuff and go back to a simple Comcast modem.  I have a Time Capsule, model A1409, and just got ATT U-Verse, model 3801HGV.  I have searched the Apple community and any online website I can find that gives information about how to make the two work together and I have nothing but flashing amber.  Airport Utility keeps saying the ethernet is unplugged (which the cable is plugged in from the modem to the TC), no DNS servers, and no internet connection.  I have disabled the wireless function on the modem/router.  I have put the Time Capsule in Bridge mode.  I have rebooted everything.  I have reset the TC three times.  I have clicked on "DMZPlus mode".  I've even enabled detection of router-behind-router conditions.  I took the Time Capsule into Apple and it fired up right away, so no issues with the ethernet port.  I can connect my PC to the ATT router and get internet access.  No matter what I do, I still have flashing amber on my TC.  Any last words of advice before I return everything from ATT?

If you want to run a test.. and that is all it will be..
I think I said the best way is to get a cheap fast ethernet switch and put it in between the two devices.. not everything in the ethernet world works.. it seldom fails now but it does fail at time.
If you are not interested in buying or borrowing a switch.. then you can do something to help in the TC interface.
This might only be available if you use 5.6 utility.. at least I have never done it via v6.
You will need to put the TC back into router mode. So start with another factory reset.
step 1 (only required if both units use same IP range).
And if the uverse modem is running 10.x.x.x IP then to give this the best shot, change the TC over to 192.168.1.x ip range. You do this by changing the DHCP Beginning Address from 10.0 to 192.168 in the picture below. If your uverse uses 192.168.x.x already ignore this step.
    Step 2.
Check now that ethernet is still not working. If not go to the setup page for wan connection and change the WAN speed. Remember the TC must be plugged wan to uverse LAN port.
The only control offered is for WAN port to fix the speed. Change it down to 100Mbps/Full duplex.
    Update the TC.
No luck, swap down to 10Mbps/Half-duplex ie the slowest possible. update the TC and see if it connects.
If it fails then there is something seriously wrong. And I doubt it will ever work.
If it happens to work at 100mbps/full duplex.. that is fast enough to cause no problems.. 10mbps is not.
I would either give up using the one item or the other.. but you do not want to keep this mode.. this is double NAT and we did it to test only.. success means the ethernet is failing to communicate correctly and go back and buy the switch I suggested.. fast ethernet.. small 5 port and it should fix it.

  • HT5706 I am trying to set up Apple TV with my Uverse WiFi, but I get errors when entering my password.  One site said that Apple TV doesn't work with WPA which Uverse uses.  Is there anyway around this or will Uverse and Apple TV just not work together.

Trying to set up Apple TV with ATT Uverse.  I get errors when trying to enter my WiFi password.  One site says that Apple TV doesn't work with Uverse because it uses WPA for encryption.  If true, does that mean Uverse subscribers cannot use Apple TV?

    Spurs63 wrote:

No, that's a rather silly conclusion.
    There are two options:
stop using the crappy router provided by the ISP.
Physically connect the ATV to the router via Ethernet.

  • Att Uverse and Airport Express

After resetting to default settings and setting up, it disappears until I restart again.  Just trying to join my AttUverse network

....it disappears until I restart again.  Just trying to join my AttUverse network
This is normal if the Express is connecting using wireless only.
    Why?
During setup, AirPort Utility is connecting to the Express using a temporary wireless signal that the Express is providing with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx.
When you click Update and tell the Express to "join" the ATT network, the Express is no longer providing the temporary Apple Network xxxxxxs signal, so it "disappears" from AirPort Utility because the connection to that network is no longer there.
The trick is to close AirPort Utility as soon as you see the message that the settings have been saved and wait for a green light on the Express.
Then log on the ATT network and open AirPort Utility. The Express will appear because it is a client of the ATT network at this point.
