Varchar2 Data type modification to BLOB

I am trying to change a VARCHAR2(20) data type into a BLOB. I have researched the web and found what I thought was the solution. That was to create a new Temp column that was a BLOB data type which I did, UPDATE the information from the column I what to modify into the Temp Column, then delete the original Varchar2 column and rename the BLOB column to the deleted columns original name.
However when I issue the UPDATE command of:
UPDATE "CUSTOMER2" SET "TEMP_NAME"="Cust_FirstName";
I am getting this error messages:
ORA-01465: invalid hex number
This is a copy of the table:
Does anyone have any ideas? All help would be very much appreciated!

2. What is "a copy of the table"?
3. Back up and explain why you're trying to do this. VARCHAR2 columns store character strings according to specific character set encodings. BLOBs store binary large objects—typically images, video, audio etc— in raw form. Although it is possible to store character data in a BLOB, this is rarely done for reasons relating to character set encoding: CLOBs are the recommended data type for large quantities of character/text information.

  • Convert all VARCHAR2 data types to character length semantics

    Hi,
    I am wondering if there is an easy way to convert all columns in the database of data type VARCHAR2(x BYTE) to VARCHAR2(x CHAR)?
    Regards
    Håkan

    The DMU does not allow character length semantics migration for the following type of objects:
    - Columns already in character length semantics
    - Data dictionary columns
    - Columns under Oracle-supplied application schemas
    - CHAR attribute columns of ADT
    - Columns in clusters
    - Columns on which partition keys are defined
    Please check if the disabled nodes you observed in the wizard fall under one of these categories.

  • How to sum hours which is varchar2 data type in oracle

    Hi My table is like this
    emp_ngtshthrs (empno number(10),nightshifthrs varchar2(20));
    now I want sum employee nightshifthrs how to do sum of hrs, this is my hours data 01:00,05:00,08:00,10:00,07:00 and 09:00
    I want sum the varchar2 type of hours how to do it? and I want to display even the sum is more than 24:00 hrs

    Well, first you have posted your question in the wrong forum. You should have posted your question in the PL/SQL forum.
    The second problem I see is that you are being too generic when you have your employees enter their night shift hours worked. If you are able, I recommend you modify your table to record hours seperately from minutes and make the columns of type NUMBER instead of type VARCHAR2(). Then you can use simply arithmatic to total the hours and minutes worked.
    If you are locked into your table and can't change it, then you can convert the characters to numbers and then perform your summary arithmatic on the values. For example:
      1  with tab1 as (
      2  select 10 as empno, '01:00' as nightshifthrs from dual union all
      3  select 10 as empno, '05:00' as nightshifthrs from dual union all
      4  select 10 as empno, '08:00' as nightshifthrs from dual union all
      5  select 10 as empno, '10:00' as nightshifthrs from dual union all
      6  select 10 as empno, '07:00' as nightshifthrs from dual union all
      7  select 10 as empno, '09:00' as nightshifthrs from dual)
      8  select sum(to_number(replace(nightshifthrs,':','.'))) AS hours_worked
      9* from tab1
    SQL> /
    HOURS_WORKED
              40
    SQL> Of course, if your users can and do enter minutes, then that complicates the example I provided. You will have to convert the minutes to decimal, sum the amount, then convert the decimal back to time and add this to your hours. For example:
      1  with tab1 as (
      2  select 10 as empno, '01:15' as nightshifthrs from dual union all
      3  select 10 as empno, '05:00' as nightshifthrs from dual union all
      4  select 10 as empno, '08:30' as nightshifthrs from dual union all
      5  select 10 as empno, '10:00' as nightshifthrs from dual union all
      6  select 10 as empno, '07:45' as nightshifthrs from dual union all
      7  select 10 as empno, '09:00' as nightshifthrs from dual)
      8  select sum(to_number(substr(nightshifthrs,1,2))) + SUM(to_number(SUBSTR(nightshifthrs,4,5)))/60

    Hello Robert,
    first, I don't see which part of your question concerns APEX. There is {forum:id=75} where you probably get best input for your problem.
    Anyhow, just a few things you might think about before posting there.
    I am trying to change a VARCHAR(2) data type into a BLOBI'm not sure if you really want this to be a BLOB. Ususally, if text fields get too small, you'd use CLOB. Again, I'd guess the 4000 bytes you can easily store in a VARCHAR2 (not VARCHAR(2), right? this would be a two byte text field) would be sufficient for what I would expect to find in a column named "Cust_Firstname".
    UPDATE CUSTOMER2 SET "CUSTOMER2"."Cust_Firstname"=Temp_Name;Is this the actual code? I guess you didn't create the column "Cust_Firstname" with double quotes. Double quotes enable case sensitive handling, so "Cust_Firstname" is different from "cust_firstname" or "CUST_FIRSTNAME". The latter version would be the default if no quotes are used, i.e. everything is handled as it were in upper case.
    Concerning your assignment order: If "Temp_Name" is the new BLOB column, you wouldn't want "Cust_Firstname" to be overwritten with that empty value.
    If I understood you right, you want to transfer the value from "Cust_Firstname" (which is VARCHAR2) to "Temp_Name", which you created as BLOB. You should change the order in the update statement then.

  • Using Long Data type in the Page

    Hi ,
    I have a page (in multiple page creation form ) which is suppose to contain only the NOTES field of the entity being created . The Notes field is defined as LONG data type in the table.
    Two Doubts.
    1. As of now in Jdev , u only have Varchar2 data type when assigning to any messageText layout item. What should be the max value set for Max Lenght of this field on the form . I suppose its 32k+ ,since its Long Field .
    Anybody has used Long notes field before ??
    2. This page has only one item on it , ie Notes ,which i have defined as messageRichText as style. I have been trying to resize this item ,so that it stretches out on entire page . But it just doesnt resizes .. any idea ..below is my PG.xml code

  • Using CLOB data type - Pros and Cons

    Dear Gurus,
    We are designing a database that will be receiving comments from external data source. These comments are stored as CLOB in the external database. We found that only 1% of incoming data will be larger than 4000 characters and are now evaluating the Pros and Cons of storing only 4000 characters of incoming comments in VARCHAR2 data type or using CLOB data type.
    Some of the concerns brought up during discussion were:
    - having to store CLOBs in separate tablespace;
    - applications, such Toad require changing defaults settings to display CLOBs in the grid. Default value is not to display them;
    - applications that build web page with CLOBs will be struggling to fit 18 thousand chararcters of which 17 thousand are blank lines;
    - cashing CLOBs in memory will consume big chunk of data buffers which will affect performance;
    - to manipulate CLOBs you need PL/SQL anonymous block or procedure;
    - bind variables cannot be assigned CLOB value;
    - dynamic SQL cannot use CLOBs;
    - temp tables don't work very well with CLOBs;
    - fuzzy logic search on CLOBs is ineffective;
    - not all ODBC drivers support Oracle CLOBs
    - UNION, MINUS, INTERSECT don't work with CLOBs
    I have not delt with CLOB data type in the past, so I am hoping to hear from you of any possible issues/hastles we may encounter?

    Some of the concerns brought up during discussion were:
    - having to store CLOBs in separate tablespace;They can be stored inline too. Depends on requirements.
    - applications, such Toad require changing defaults settings to display CLOBs in the grid. Default value is not to display them;Toad is a developer tool so that shouldn't matter. What should matter is how you display the data to end users etc. but that will depend on the interface. Some can handle CLOBs and others not. Again, it depends on the requirements.
    - applications that build web page with CLOBs will be struggling to fit 18 thousand chararcters of which 17 thousand are blank lines;Why would they struggle? 18,000 characters is only around 18k in file size, that's not that big to a web page.
    - cashing CLOBs in memory will consume big chunk of data buffers which will affect performance;Who's caching them in memory? What are you planning on doing with these CLOBs? There's no real reason they should impact performance any more than anything else, but it depends on your requirements as to how you plan to use them.
    - to manipulate CLOBs you need PL/SQL anonymous block or procedure;You can manipulate CLOBs in SQL too, using the DBMS_LOB package.
    - bind variables cannot be assigned CLOB value;Are you sure?
    - dynamic SQL cannot use CLOBs;Yes it can. 11g supports CLOBs for EXECUTE IMMEDIATE statements and pre 11g you can use the DBMS_SQL package with CLOB's split into a VARCHAR2S structure.
    - temp tables don't work very well with CLOBs;What do you mean "don't work well"?
    - fuzzy logic search on CLOBs is ineffective;Seems like you're pulling information from various sources without context. Again, it depends on your requirements as to how you are going to use the CLOB's
    - not all ODBC drivers support Oracle CLOBs not all, but there are some. Again, it depends what you want to achieve.
    - UNION, MINUS, INTERSECT don't work with CLOBsTrue.
    I have not delt with CLOB data type in the past, so I am hoping to hear from you of any possible issues/hastles we may encounter?You may have more hassle if you "need" to accept more than 4000 characters and you are splitting it into seperate columns or rows, when a CLOB would do it easily.
    It seems as though you are trying to find all the negative aspects of CLOBs and ignoring all the positive aspects, and also ignoring the negative aspects of not using CLOB's.
    Without context you're assumptions are just that, assumptions, so nobody can tell you if it will be right or wrong to use them. CLOB's do have their uses, just as XMLTYPE's have their uses etc. If you're using them for the right reasons then great, but if you're ignoring them for the wrong reasons then you'll suffer.

    Predefined Subtypes of Character Data Types

    The CHAR data type has one predefined subtype, CHARACTER. The VARCHAR2 data type has two predefined subtypes, VARCHAR and STRING. Each of these subtypes has the same range of values as its base type, and can be used instead of its base type for compatibility with ANSI/ISO and IBM types.

  • PLS-320 error.  Column named the same as the data type.

    Howdy all. I have a table called BLOBS. It is made up of two columns - B_ID and BLOB. The data type of the BLOB column is the BLOB data type. This is causing me problems when using this table in a PL/SQL procedure. The error that I get is below. The error goes away if I rename the BLOB column to something other than BLOB, but I do not want to do this. I have migrated this database (with about 1000 stored procedures) from SQL2K. Are there any workarounds for this problem other than renaming the column?

    Thanks. I know it would be better to rename it, but that is currently on the low end of my options. As I stated, I have about 1000 stored procedures in my SQL2K database - many of them access this BLOBS table and this BLOB column.
    I am given the error even without trying to access the particular BLOB column, though. If I just include the BLOBS table in the FROM clause of a query I get the error.

  • Using a BLOB data type in a CMP Entity Bean: Error when send large files

    I've successfully impleenting BLOB in my EJB. But the main prob is, it can only work on small file which is around 3K. Any larger files than that will caused error (refer below). I got info from a friend which is using normal JDBC call to insert a file into BLOB column that you can't use java.sql.Blob data type which will have this limitation. He suggested that by using oracle.sql.BLOB, this prob won't exist.
    The problem is I'm unable to use oracle.sql.BLOB in my CMP EJB because in the jbosscmp-jdbc.xml, I'm able to specify the normal BLOB only which is java.sql.Blob (Refer below).
             <cmp-field>

                <jdbc-type>BLOB</jdbc-type>
                <sql-type>BLOB</sql-type>
            </cmp-field>So, how do I solve this problem? I need to store files which the size is much bigger than that. I'm using JBoss 4 as my app server and Oracle 9i as my DB. I can see that there's many ppl facing this prob, but no solution to it. Pls advise. Thanks.
