Variable for start page number?

I have a collection of indesign documents collated in a book.
I want to implement a footer that looks like:
"Start Page - Last Page"
"750 - 763"
where Start Page is begining of the beging of the constituent indesign document and last page is the end of the document.
I can only find a variable for Last Page. Where the start page variable?

But the Current Page Marker would only be the correct starting page at the very first page of each section! All next pages will show, well, the Current Page ...
There is no variable for this, it seems. A cross-reference might work -- initally, it's more work, but at least it will update automatically as you move pages around. Point against is, you would need to create a new master page for each article! (Assuming your footer is on a master page.)
I don't see a good solution out of the box.

  • Changing starting page number in CS4

    Hi,
    As the title suggests I want to change the starting page number using javascript.
    I know in CS5 you can use app.activeDocument.documentPreferences.startPageNumber = myNum but I can't seem to find the equivelant method for CS4.
    I can find the starting page number with app.activeDocument.pages.firstItem().name but I can't change it as it's read-only.
    Any help appreciated.
    Cheers,
    John

    With a little bit more persistence I found you can change it with:
    myDoc.sections[0].pageNumberStart = myNum;
    It wasn't easy to find though, and the data browser in the ESTK wasn't much help :-(
    Cheers,

    thank you all

    Hi,
    Page number always start with 1 if you want to your page number to start with 5 then try this formula in place of your page number special field :
    Whileprintingrecords;
    Numbervar x:=4;
    x:=x+1;
    This will print 5 on your first page.
    Thanks,

  • How to start page number in footer lower down

    I'm creating an inventory catalog and I need to have all the pages numbered. I know how to insert the page numbers using the master pages, but they always start right at page 1. The first 8 pages are going to be a table of contents and need their own separate roman numeral page numbers.
    So pages 1-8 need to be labled I-VIII
    and pages 9 - whenever need to be labled 1 - whenever
    Is there a way to do this, or am I going to have to label each individual page?

    You can create a new section starting on page 9. In the page panel select page 9, right click, choose Numbering and Sections Options/Start Page Numbering at 1. It will probably warn you that 1 already exist. Click OK. Now select the first page of the document, right click, Star Page Numbering at 1, Style and choose the roman numerals.

  • Session-scope variable for JSP page used in a frame

    Hi,
    I don't know if there's a way to do this at the same time:
    (1)- assign session scope to a variable (in order to be able to retrieve recurrently the previous value each time the JSP is called);
    (2)- set its visibility in a way that it could be accessed only by the page that defines it. The JSP is used in a frameset along with an other JSP that can potentially define identical session-scoped variable (You understand why I want to keep them separate)
    session.setAttribute():
    seems not to be the thing I need
    pageContext.setAttribute():
    with SESSION_SCOPE, it behaves the same way as session.setAttribute(). with PAGE_SCOPE, condition (1) can't be satisfied.
    Does anybody have an idea ?
    Thanx in advance.

    I can see that you will not want to maintain two different files for every possible page on the site!
    It may be possible to do something like <frameset rows="*" cols="50%,*">
      <frame name="content1" src="file.jsp?frame=one" >
      <frame name="content2" src="file.jsp?frame=two" >
    </frameset>and then in the jsp<%
    String frame=request.getParameter("frame");
    session.setAttribute(frame+"AttributeName",attributeValue);
    %>This will set up two session attributes - "oneAttributeName" and "twoAttributeName". Depending on how many variables you have, this may prove just as difficult to maintain.
    You may end up having to simply pass url parameters between pages to maintain state within the individual frames, which is far from elegant also.
    I am interested in how you end up solving this one.

    Hi,
    Maintain a variable for the page number.
    Let it be page_no = 1 initially.
    then you can use,
    /: AT NEW vendor_no.
       page_no = 1. "setting the page number from 1 when the vendor number changes.
    /: ENDAT.
    When its the same vendor you can increment the page_no and print it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Page Numbers Starting on Second Page as Page Number 1

    I'm writing essays for my AP World History class and I need a cover page that doesn't have a page number as the first page of the document. Then my essays will go in order from the second page, but the page numbers need to start as 1. I have already clicked "First page is different" in the inspector under Section, but it starts the page numbering at 2 instead of the needed one. Any ideas on how to do this?
    Thanks

    Have you tried setting the starting page number to zero? Then the next page should be #1.
    Or you can add a section break & start the numbering of the new section at 1.

  • Text Variable Help? Beginning section page number required

    Hi guys,
    My name is Arjun and I am working on a book in Indesign. I've created quite a few sections and want to create a header on top that displays,
    for example
    "Summary FirstX to LastX" (in bold are the variables)
    First X being that Sections first page number
    Last X being that Sections last page number
    There is a default preset that came with Indesign CS4 that allows you to create a Text variable for the last page number of that section. What about the beginning? I don't wan to turn that to static text as i have a lot of page shuffling to do and the more the automated the better.
    Thanks,
    Arjun

    I hadn't noticed that there isn't a First Page Number text variable building block. How odd.
    I would try setting up a "cross-reference" to the first paragraph in your section. (This is not part of the text variable dialog. Use the cross-reference window under Type & Tables in the Windows menu). I assume these will work on master pages, though I haven't tried it. It does seem odd that you'd need to use completely different tools for each page number!
    Be aware that there's now a hidden marker at the beginning of that paragraph, which the cross reference uses to know what page number to insert. So if you accidentally remove it (for instance, if you delete and retype the whole paragraph), you'll have to set up the cross reference again. And you'll have to explicitly create that cross reference in each section of your book, while the text variables are pretty automatic. So there could easily be a better solution that I haven't thought of.
    Good luck, and tell us what finally works...

  • Report's First Page Start with a specified page number.

    I want that my first page of the report should start by a number whixh i want. Say the PageNo on the first page is 32 and it will proceed as 33, 34, 35 ....so on.
    What to do?

    hello,
    you can modify the starting value for the page number by using the "Page Numbering" property of your page number field. there you can define where you want your page numbers to start.

  • Initial-page-number not working in RTF format output

    A report has a parameter for the page number to start with. In rtf template below code is present
    <?initial-page-number:xdoxslt:ifelse(P_FIRST_PAGE_NUM!=’’,number(P_FIRST_PAGE_NUM),1)?>
    The report page number starts with the value which we pass in p_first_page_num in PDF format but in rtf format output it always starts with 1.
    Is initial-page-number not supported in RTF format output ? If not then what is the alternative?

    the method u followed is fine as need a page number staring from a specify value which u input.
    @section is only for resetting page number to 1 for every group and for that pdf and ppt will be fine but only for rtf u need to use that ( pressing F9).
    u can use @section and initial page number combined but they give u same output as get now. rtf output wont support it will only reset 1 every time
    What ever u do rtf output wont support initial page number code ..........
    i mentioned that F9 work around to mention that it is the only work around u have upto now to control rtf output with regards to page number.
    Guru's correct me if i am wrong. wait for a day or two if some one from guru's confirm it .
    If u need real confirmation raise an SR oracle will let u know .

    Hi John,
    You don't need to close and reopen the window. Instead of dialog use 'palette' type of the window and run the script in a persistent engine, e.g. #targetengine "session".

  • Page Number Repeating

    Hi Guys,
    I am in the process of developing a program that would print several SAPScript forms to be sent  to third parties. For instances I have third parties ABC, PQR and XYZ. Each third party has several line items which can spill into several pages. What is happening is that the page numbers for ABC, repeats on page 1, for PQR, it repeats on page 2, on XYZ it repeats on page 3 for all the pages per third party. I want it to be such that if third party ABC for instance has 17 pages it should write pages 1,2,3,...,17 on the pages and if PQR has 4 pages it should write pages 1,2,3,4 on each page accordingly. How do I approach this?
    Regards

    1. sort the internal table based on Third Party ,
    2. Dont use standard page variable, use custom variable
    3. Print the custom variable as a page number and increment each page
    4. If the new third party like abc to xyz ,reset the custom variable at this time.
    Regards
