Variable in Text Caption in Html5

I am trying to display the contents of a variable on a slide so I am using a text caption.  It works fine on my PC, but on the iPad, where it is using Html5, only the initial value of the variable is being displayed. I've tried delaying when the caption shows up to give it time to pick up the variable but to no avail.
Failing this, is there some other way I can get the information in the variable out of Captivate 8, e.g. to email it or some such?
Thanks.

Could you try this: insert the variable in a text container on the first slide where it will be updated, and time this container for the rest of the project. Just to check if it never shows up on iPad?
You say that you see a difference between Preview in Browser as SWF and as HTML5? Did you try the HTML5 version on anything else than the iPad?

  • Text caption character/space limitation

This is probably so obvious that I'm missing it (trying too hard!). I have a TEB that is assigned a variable to return a user's input from the TEB (upon submit) to the next slide, inside a Text Caption box. The variable from the TEB is simply, v_scen1_cp; the capture box is assigned $$v_scen1_cp$$. Everything is good, right? Here's the probem: if a user puts more than 12 characters in the TEB, the Text Caption box on the following slide will not capture all the characters - it drops the characters if more than 12. I would like to be able to assign up to 20 characters to the Text Caption box. Any suggestions?

If you go to the "Format" section of the text box properties and insert your variable by using the "x" icon then right below where you select the variable name there is a field called "Maximum length". The default is 15 chars so you can change it to 50 or 100 if you like and then it will all be displayed in your text caption.

  • Advanced actions - trying to show a text caption

I have a slide with 5 text captions made from smart shapes, and 5 click boxes. All 5 smart shapes are hidden. I have 5 variables, all of which are set to zero. When a click box is clicked on, the corresponding smart shape shows and the value of the first user variable is set to one. When another click box is clicked on the corresponding smart shape shows and the next user variable is set to 1. Each of the click boxes is set up in a similar fashion. I set up 5 advanced actions, and the On Success action for each of the click boxes uses one of 5 advanced actions. The action for each click box looks something like this (I'm using generic names for this example):
IF variable1 is equal to 0
    ACTIONS
    Show textCaption1
    Assign variable1 with 1
    Play Audio sound.wav
    Continue
This is working fine, and the corresponding smart shapes are showing as they should when each of the click boxes is clicked on.
But I have an additional feedback text caption that I want to show after all 5 smart shapes are showing. I tried setting up an advanced action that looks like this:
    IF
variable1 is equal to 1 AND
variable2 is equal to 1 AND
variable3 is equal to 1 AND
variable4 is equal to 1 AND
    variable5 is equal to 1
    ACTIONS
    Show feedbackTextCaption
But even after all of the click boxes have been clicked (which should set each of the 5 variables to 1), the feedback text caption does not show.
Can anyone help with a suggestion?

@Sreekanth, that is not the correct approach, because a user could click 5 times on the same click box and see the final text caption. Only when you disable an already clicked interactive object this can be used. Jay was right by choosing five different variables.
@Jay How do you trigger that last conditional action? Which event do you use? You explain that the first described action is triggered by the click box, but not what is triggering the conditional action.
I suspect you'll have to combine both actions, and assign them to each click box. That means a conditional action with two decisions:
First decision 'Always' needs the condition 'IF 1 is equal to 1' to create a mimicked standard action, and has to show the text caption, to assign 1 to the variable and to play the audio. I don't know why you added 'Continue'? If the click boxes pause all at the same moment, don't add Continue, let the playhead remain at the same location.
Second decision 'Checker' is the conditional action that you wrote, checking the values of the 5 variables, and if they have all the value 1 to show the feedback text.

  • Captivate: Using Javascript to show/hide text captions

    Hello,
I want to show/hide a text caption using javascript. I can't find the way of doing it with advanced actions. I dont know if it's because it belongs to a question slide in a pool. Does somebody knows if it's possible and how it can be done??

You can set the length of the variable when you insert it.
15 characters is just the default setting.
What I meant by COULD is that the kind of thing you are asking about here (using JavaScript to hide objects inside a Captivate movie at runtime) is not as simple as you'd like it to be.
JavaScript is not my particular area of expertise, but there are some people that chime in on this forum that ARE experts at JS. But I think they would also be the first to say that it's not as simple a thing to pull off as just "knowing the command to hide/show an object".
The easiest tool to use in Captivate for showing or hiding objects is Advanced Actions.  The next easiest thing to use is ActionScript 3, and that's hard.  JavaScript is a very useful programming language, but it spends all of its life outside the Captivate movie looking in through AS3's External Interface.  So JS alone is not going to solve all your issues.

  • How can i control the duration of the display of a text caption?

I have five buttons on the screen. I wish to realize this: click on any of the button, a corresponding text caption will appear and stays for 5 seconds, or until next button is clicked.
Can someone tell me how to realize this?
    Thank you.

    Hello,
Tried this out, seems to work:
create a user variable v_start that will store the number of the first frame
create an advanced action Start, to be triggered on entering the slide, with two statements:
    Assign v_start with rdinfoCurrentFrame
    Continue
create the 5 text captions and set them to invisible, I labeled them TC_One, TC_Two, TC_Three, TC_Four, TC_Five; they should start from the beginning of the slide and timed for 5secs
create the 5 buttons, each of them will trigger an advanced action
create the advanced actions One, Two... Five to be triggered by the buttons, with those statements (here example for action One):
    Show TC_One
    Hide TC_Two
    Hide TC_Three
    Hide TC_Four
    Hide TC_Five
Assign rdcmndGotoFrame with v_start    this will send the playhead to the first frame, and text caption will show up for 5 secs
    Continue

  • Border issue when creating custom text captions

    Applicable to: Captivate 5
    OS: Windows XP, SP3
I seem to be experiencing an issue that I cannot locate an answer too, there are various discussions within the forums related to custom text caption issues but nothing specifc to mine. I hope someone can help.
I am creating custom text captions for a project I am working on and have read & followed the help documentation related to customising text captions though I seem to be presented with issues displaying the border I have created.
    Scenario 1
I copied the AdobeBlue1.bmp and associated .FCM from the Captions folder, created my own image based on the size of the .bmp and renamed the .FCM file then placed the 2 files into the Captions folder. Unfortunately the border on my custom image is not showing, all I see is the black background.
    Scenario 2
I copied the AdobeBlue1.bmp and associated .FCM from the Captions folder, edited the image changing the colours of the border (green) and background (white) and renamed the .FCM file then placed the 2 files into the Captions folder. Unfortunately the border on my custom image is still not showing, all I see this time is the white background.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening and if there are any ways of controlling the border of the text captions within the Captivate UI? There are various output options when saving the .bmp as I am working in GIMP but I have chosen all of them and this still does not affect the border in anyway, I just cannot see it. Help please!
    Thank you
    Tom

    Hi Rick
GIMP has various options for saving as bitmap and I needed to save as Windows 24 bit bitmap (default 32 in GIMP). I did as you mentioned and created in a new project and repeated the steps appropriately and that seems to be working great now! Thanks for your help on this one, though it's very pernickity (fiddly)!!!!
P.S. Formatting in text captions when using variables is a nightmare!!!! Raising on another post though.
    Cheers

  • Text Caption options not applied

    Hi,
I'm trying to add a text caption with a transparent style.
however when I try to modify font, font size, or color no change is
being applied. If I switch to the Adobe Blue caption style I can
modify color, but not font size. Any idea why this is
    happening?

    Hi there
I happened across a weird issue just last night that was resolved by choosing a different ActionScript version. I'm wondering if you can try this to see if there is a change in behavior.
Click Edit > Preferences > Project > Publish Settings and whatever it's set to AS2 or AS3, try the other option and see if it changes your outcome.

  • Is it possible to convert text captions to Smart Shapes?

    Hello,
I have a collegue that is using Cp 5 to record software simulations which then need to be brought into Cp6. The problem is that our standards (for software simulations) employ Smart Shape call outs (not the Cp 5.5 and earlier text captions).
Is it possible to convert these text captions into our themed Smart Shapes either automatically inside Captivate 6 or by modifying the content within the CPTx file?
    Thank you,
    Shawn

    Hello Lilybiri,
As always you are awesome! :-)
    >I don't believe an automatic switch will be possible, because smart shapes are totally different objects.
I understand because there are a huge variety of shapes in either format. But I suspect that it should be easy to convert a text caption from any style to one specified smart shape style.
Actually, I am asking before the simulations get started. So nothing has been done yet. I am unsure what you are suggesting I should do in the preferences under Cp 5.5. Are you suggesting that there is a way to convert 'some format' of text callouts, in a Cp5.5 demonstration simulation, to Smart Shapes in Cp6?
    >but since you already have created the simulations, it has to be done manually. Hoping for you that
    >someone has a bright idea, but I do not see one immediately.
For anyone else in this situation, it would be handy to have a solution (rather than painstakingly convert each manually).
I am wondering if this might be a relatively easy search/replace within one of the xml files within the CPTx file. I'm going to look at this tonight.
    Thanks for your assist.

  • Text Caption Box not appearing

HI All / Captivate 4 Experts:
I recently upgraded from Captivate 3 to 4.  My text caption box is not appearing on certain slides.  I do have a click box on them, however when I removed the click box and played the next 5 slides...the text caption box did not appear.
The slides that I have are meant for the user to click on certain areas with the instructions given to them on what and where to click.
    Any ideas???
    PLEASE HELP!!  Thanks!

  • Text Caption will not pop up and go away.  It is there the whole slide

I have a Text Caption box that I am wanting to pop up and
give a Hint on how to answer a question slide and then go away
    after a few seconds.
I have this in the Options tab for it:
Display for: specific time: 2.2 seconds
    Appear after: .3 seconds
    Effect: Fade in and out
In: .4 seconds Out: .5 seconds

    Welcome to our community
Is this a standard Text Caption and you are inserting it on a
Question Slide? If so, perhaps the buttons or overall construction
of the Question Slide are pausing it so the caption is simply
appearing to remain on the slide the entire time.
If you are unable to futz with the timing to get the result
you want, you might try creating a small Captivate project that
only has the caption fading into view briefly, then fading out.
Publish that as a SWF and insert it on your question slide.
Hopefully something here was helpful... Rick

  • Animating Pictures or Text Captions

    Hi Guys
Is there any way of getting more animation of Text Captions or pictures, other than simply fading them in?  I know there is the option of setting up and using the 'Text Animations' but I find the text formatting options very limited.  Notwithstanding this text issue, what about having pictures entering with a little more pizazz?
Any help would be most appreciated and if anyone from Captivate Development are reading and this isn't possible - can we have it for the future... including making the Text Animations feature more versatile with respect to text formatting - or am I just missing something here?
    Many thanks in advance
    Kind regards
    Kevin

    Hi there
Captivate can seem limiting at times. But mostly, I think it's more of a "Can't see the forest for all the darn trees in the stupid way!" issue.
Perhaps if you could articulate exactly how you would like to "jazz it up", we might suggest alternatives or using other features to help.
What you described seems to be a bit on the "fuzzy nebulous" end of the spectrum.

  • Text captions are not displayed as per timeline settings after publishing.

    Hi All,
I am using Adobe Captivate 4. I have provided different start times in timeline settings for 4 text captions. When i preview my slide, it displays well. But when i publish it and try to view it, it is only dsiplaying the first text caption and the other text captions are not at all displayed.
Request to help in this regard.
    Many Thanks,
    Kranthi

    Hi Rick,
    Thanks for your help.
Yeah..you are correct...I do have buttons in my slide.
When i adjusted the start time for my buttons after my text captions....it perfectly works fine...

  • Text value not aligned with text caption

    Hello,
In my text fields, the text value is always slightly raised from the text caption. Is there a way to get them to align?
    Thanks,
    Gail

    Hi Geo,
I have tried top, middle, and bottom alignment and although they give different results, none are actually aligned with the caption text.
The top and middle alignments still have the value text raised above the caption text.
The bottom alignment gives a puzzling result of the value text being sunk below the caption text and actually somewhat cut off at the bottom.
For some of my text boxes I have thrown together a work-around solution for this by setting the baseline shift for the value text to -3pt. Although this does seem to work, I don't imagine this is how the program was INTENDED to be used and I'd like to understand how to get the text aligned without having to tweak baselines.
Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks,
    Gail

  • Text caption capture

    Sinc
I have (on my previous computer) captured Captivate
demonstrations where Captivate automatically inserted captions. I'm
trying to create an interactive training simulation and it doesn't
matter what Options I select under the auto-capture, Captivate is
not automatically inserting any captions, rollover captions or
highlight boxes. I have a Dell Dimension 3100 with Windows XP,
Version 5.1 SP2. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi dalemw and welcome to our community
I'm wondering if what you are seeing is possibly related to
the actual application being recorded. Perhaps Captivate simply
doesn't recognize some of the items in order to insert the Text
Caption. To test this, try opening Windows Notepad and record a
brief movie. See if it inserts captions there. If so, it's the
application you are recording and probably not Captivate.
    Things to try:
Restart Captivate - Sometimes simply closing and restarting
    Captivate does the trick.
Hunt and destroy the Captivate settings file - you can do
this by viewing the TechNote linked below:
    TechNote
Don't worry, Captivate easily rebuilds this file if it isn't
found. Oh yeah, you also want to be sure and Close Captivate before
doing this. No need to make it wander around your computer all bug
eyed wondering where the file went.
    Cheers... Rick
