Variable text

I am creating a flyer my client would like to personalize the flyer to each person that the flyer is sent to. It should read (persons name) how would you like to save 40% see detail inside. I need to know how to create a variable text box that would put in the persons name in front of the text how would you like to save 40%, I am using Indesign CS3 for the first time I always design everything in photoshop. I am also using window operating system.
Thanks

    I'm working Crystal report that connected to Query BEX SAP BW trough SAP integration kit,
    currently i have case that need report dynamic header using variable text from BEX query, but seem the variable text not working in Crystal reports. the header in Crystal report shown as Desription\technical name, not result from the variable text in Query BEX in SAP.
    In https://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/BOBJ/Crystal%20Reports%20and%20BW%20query%20elements stated that the "Text variable" with "replacement path" is supported, but i don't know in my query is not working.
    i already set in Database -> options->  table and fields -> Show Both, but the text variable still not working.

  • PDF forms - underlined variable text

    Hello Everyone,
    I am trying to create a PDF form with variable text fields in Acrobat 9 Pro and I see there are very limited possibilities in the text formatting. I can specify font, size, color, border, but there is missing any option how to switch on the underlining of the text. Is there any way how to achieve this?
    Thanks in advance for any hint.
    Regards,
    Jan

    You can add some JavaScript to your script that imports the data from the database and format the inserted text by using the span object to apply the underline property. The following ecample is from the Acrobat JavaScript API Reference.
    Example
    Write rich text to a rich text field using various properties. See the Field object
    richValue property for more details and examples.
    var f = this.getField("myRichField");
    // Create an array to hold the Span objects
    var spans = new Array();
    // Each Span object is an object, so we must create one
    spans[0] = new Object();
    spans[0].alignment = "center";
    spans[0].text = "The answer is x";
    spans[1] = new Object();
    spans[1].text = "2/3";
    spans[1].superscript = true;
    spans[2] = new Object();
    spans[2].superscript = false;
    spans[2].text = ". ";
    spans[3] = new Object();
    spans[3].underline = true;
    spans[3].text = "Did you get it right?";
    spans[3].fontStyle = "italic";
    spans[3].textColor = color.red;
    // Now assign our array of Span objects to the field using // field.richValue
    f.richValue = spans;

  • Discoverer Plus - How to include variable text in the Title

    Hi,
    I need to include a variable text in the report like the user information or another information i woul like to obtain from a query that is not the standars date,time,... oracle discoverer plus improves us.
    I tried with calculations associates to a parameters, but is not possible.
    I hope i explained correctly.
    Thanks,

    This can be done by creating a parameter, then a calculation, then a condition. Then under "Edit Header" or Page Setup, choose "Header" or "Footer"as needed and choose to insert the Parameter.
    Step by step Example instruction:
    1-Create a parameter as follows:
    --Item = NONE
    --Name = "Workbook run by" (This will appear in the heading or title when workbook run)
    --Prompt = "Please enter UserID in all capital letters"
    --Description and Default value left blank
    2-Create a Calculation
    --In New Calculation choose "Function" then choose the function "USER" from Database. (This is all that the calculation will need.)
    --Name Calculation  = i.e.: "DB_USERID"
    3-Create a condition as follows:
    --Name = Request_UserID
    --Item = DB_USERID
    Condition = IN
    Value = Choose parameter: Workbook run by
    -Double click on worksheet title, choose Insert, then choose Parameter (This can be done the same way under Page Setup for Header and Footer
    -The calculation will create an extra column which I put at the top as a Page Item
    -This will force the user to enter the UserID they are logged in to Discoverer with.
    -This is case sensative. Therefore, since all Databe IDs are stored on the Database in all-caps, then the user will have to enter in all caps as well.
    Thanks,

  • Variable text is blank in emails when using Scheduled Task to email event log notifications

    I am trying to use powershell to email notification when a user account gets locked.  I am running the script from a server 2008 domain controller.
    I have tried multiple scripts and I have the same issue every time.  The script works fine when I run it directly from the powershell command line window.
    However whenever I try running the exact same scripts from an event-triggered scheduled task, the script runs, however any content that generated from a variable is not added to the email.  It is just left blank and ignored.
    I have tried adding lots of permissions including domain administrator group membership to the account  runs the task from and it doesn't include all the expected text unless I run it from the built-in domain administrator account.
    The task runs and the email is sent, but the email is missing all the content generated by variables.
    How can this be fixed?
    Here is an example script.
    $AccountLockOutEvent = Get-EventLog -LogName "Security" -InstanceID 4740 -Newest 1
    $LockedAccount = $($AccountLockOutEvent.ReplacementStrings[0])
    $AccountLockOutEventTime = $AccountLockOutEvent.TimeGenerated

    By variable text I mean everything that it generates by using a variable such as the user's name ($LockedAccount)
    and everything else such as $AccountLockOutEventTime and everything else that is generated from
    a variable.
    Nothing like that appears in the email only hard coded text.
    I am not running it remotely.  I am logged directly onto the domain controller and I tried giving
    the account that is used to run the task more and more permissions including domain administrator group membership with the same result.
    When I run the exact same script on the same domain controller locally via the powershell CLI all of the info appears.
    This is the info when the email is generated by running the script directly from the powershell CLI:

  • Fix variable text (File Name) when importing INDD into INDD

    More of a fix request than a new feature:
    Simply put, the variable text (File Name) shows the file extension when the document is imported into another INDD regardless of the variable text specifications in the originating document. This is unexpected and undesired.
    Please see problem description in this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/489492?tstart=0

    Seconded. Currently, I don't use this variable in this way, but I can envisage future scenarios where it would be a problem.
    And it seems a strange thing to miss out on ... (why would an INDD file behave different?)

  • Preventing file extensions being added to variable text (File Name)-

    …when one imports one INDD file (v5 or 6) into another. We have the variable text specifications set to exclude file extensions. The .indd does not publish in the originating document.
    We use INDD import and the text variable "File Name" quite a lot.
    TIA-
    -Todd

    I think he's saying that when you open an ID doc, the filename variabe inside can be set to report just the name, but when you import that same doc into another ID doc, the filename variable shows the ".indd" extension.
    EDIT: Yes, that is (stupidly) how it seems to work. No idea how to fix it though. Suspect Adobe has to issue an update.

  • CSV with large variable text FIELD

    Hello All,
    I have more then 1000 csv with more than 100 columns to be imported to Oracle through FTP.
    there are few columns in CSV file that has variable text and it can go upto 9000 chars. I tried using varchar2 but it max out at 4000. Is there any way i can use CLOB?
    Thank you in advance.

    i found the solution, by using clob database field.

  • Colour variable text Mark

    Does anyone know if a Colour variable text exist?
    We need this for our media tag bar

    No, it doesn't exist, but fortunately you asked this in the Feature Request forum, so you could rewrite it to read
    "Can Adobe add a Color variable type? That'd be really, really useful."
    (and then we can all go like, "yeah me too", or possibly "how would you suppose it should work?")

  • Button Setting Variable - Text Field Not Updating

    Hi,
    I am working with Acrobat 9 Pro on Windows.
    I am unable to make the following work: When the user clicks a Button, a Text Field appears with the text associated with the Button clicked. I have tried accomplishing this with a variable declared in the Document JavaScripts, buttons setting the value of the variable, and a Text Field containing a Custom Calculation Script that returns the text associated with the value of the variable.
    Everything works - except the Text Field doesn't return the text associated with the value of the variable. I have an app.alert (for now) in the button scripts so I can see if the variable has the correct value - and it does - but when the Text Field appears - the text never changes.
    What I have observed: if I go back into the Custom Calculation Script of the Text Field and do nothing, go back out, go to Preview, and click on a Button, the text updates to the previous variable value (not the Button variable value I just clicked).
    So - I think - the Custom Calculation Script isn't seeing the new variable "on the fly". Even though the app.alerts are. I don't think this is a Field Calculation Order problem. But maybe it is. And this is where my brain power ends. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    I have this in the Document JavaScripts:
    var ITrig = 1;
    I have three Buttons (want to have more) that will set the ITrig variable.
    Here is what I have in one Button:
    var Inpopup = this.getField("PartASectionIIInstructions")
    ITrig = 2;
    app.alert(ITrig);
    if (Inpopup.display == display.hidden) {
    Inpopup.display = display.visible
    Inpopup.setFocus();
    } else {
    Inpopup.display = display.hidden;
    I have this in the PartASectionIIInstructions Text Field in the Custom Calculation Script:
    if (ITrig == 2) {
    event.value = "#2";
    else if (ITrig == 3) {
    event.value = "#3";
    else if (ITrig == 4) {
    event.value = "#4";

    Thank you. I had tried something like that earlier - without success. That is why I went to the calculation script. So - I went back to the "Acrobat Forms - JavaScript Object Specification" looking for an answer. It finally sunk in I was guilty of this:
    var Inpopup = this.getField("PartASectionIIInstructions").value
    Inpopup = "#3"
    When I should have been doing this:
    var Inpopup = this.getField("PartASectionIIInstructions")
    Inpopup.value = "#3"

  • Change of variable text in BEx selection screen

    Hi all,
    in our BW system the key users are allowed to create queries and also create variables. In some cases, especially for often used info objects like 0DATE the number of variables is increasing very quickly. The reason for this is, that 0DATE is used for a big variety of meanings e.g. delivery date, order date, invoice date etc.
    So the users always create new variables only to have a meaningful description in the BEx selection screen, because they do not want only "date" to be displayed here. As result we have many different varianbles with exactly the same technical settings with only different names.
    So my question is: Is it possible to change the diplayed text in the selection screen for each query without having to create a new variable?
    Thanek you and best regards

    Hi Stephan,
    Changing the diplayed text in the selection screen for each query is not possible.You have to create a new variable for each query.

  • Variable text files in CS 5.5 data merge

    I have a document that I need to change the text in the document based on a variable in the data file that is being used for the data merge. For example if the are in group A the get letter from text document A, if they are in group B they get the letter from text document B.
    Can the data merge in CS 5.5 do this?

    not with text and not by itself, but a solution is workable.
    indesign's data merge can't place text files as if they were merging pictures, but it can place pictures from jpg, eps, pdf... if the text which changed was a picture, say a PDF, then this would be fine.
    as to telling data merge what is variable, indesign won't parse the data as such... it'll just put the data wherever the placeholders were. if you want if/else statements, these need to be done in the excel file first prior to saving as a text file for indesign.
    so yes, what the OP wants is do-able, but not "off of the shelf" - some manipulation in excel is required.

  • Text variable + text with tabs to align away from spine

    Hello
    I need a document header that shows the chapter captions. So I created a text variable that picks the format of the caption.
    But the chapter captions have tabs:
    I.>Introduction
    So in the header, on the left pages it looks fine:
    alignment is "away from spine"
    I.>Introduction
    But on the right page the chapter number remains with the spine, only the text after the tabs aligns "away from the spine":
    I.                 >                                   Introduction
    I found it difficult to search for this on google and the forum (and no result) - and hope I made it clear in the text above I can't believe it's a rare problem and really hope I just oversee something and it can be solved..
    Thank you!!

    Some details about how the paragraph is constructed would help. I'm guessing here that the variable is a running head variable based on paragraph style, and that the nmber is manually typed, along with the tab, rather than being a numbered list.
    If that's the case, substituting one or more em spaces or other fixed-width spaces in combination for the tab should solve the problem in the headers, but may cause other issues in the body of the text if your intention by using the tab was to always have a variable space between the number and the words depening on how many characters there are in your number. With roman numerals and proportional fonts it would be difficult without the tab to always have the chapter title itself begin at the same x-coordinate in the frame regardless of the number.
    To overcome that issue, you can use two variables in the header, both designated as Running Header (character style), and separate them with an em-space or similar (not a tab). If there are not already nested styles in use for the titles, create two character styles that are nothing but names, then in the paragraph style for your chapter titles go to Drop Caps and Nested Styles and apply the first character syle up to 1 tab character, None through 1 tab character, and the second character style through 1 sentence. You two character style based variables in the header will pick up the two parts of the paragraph. It seems unlikely that anyone would notice or care that the spacing is fixed between number and text in the headers but not on the page, especially since the alignment shifts from page to page.

  • Variable Text not appearing in Report

    Hi All,
    I have created one BEx Query in which in selection criteria i am giving verson (100) , Year (2008) , Posting Period (10 - 12) i have one key figure is Total Value in GC  . Now my req. is when i run the report , in keyfigures these values like  Period 10 - 12 in GC must appear in column header.
    I created variable in BEx designer for  Period like ZIS_A1_CUR_FROM_TEXT and ZIS_A1_CUR_TO TEXT . and i defined all the properties correctly. Now when i run the report it shows me  variable name like &ZIS_A1_CUR_FROM_TXT & &ZIS_A1_CUR_TO_TEXT ... but it should show me Period 10 -12 in GC.
    Should i set any properties ? or did i forget any properties to set ?
    Regards,
    BI NEW

    Hello,
    Firstly if ur KF is a calculated KF then the text variable will display only if there is no overlap of variables belonging to same characteristic.
    If it is just restricted KF then try,
    Processing type: Replacement path
    Replace variable with: External characteristic value key
    In that the lower 2 settings are OFFSET START & OFFSET LENGTH...
    Try changing this 2 settings with negative and positive values and see if it brings you the perfect output
    if in Dev sys.
    try displaying each text varibale one at a time instead od showing both together.
    As the last option u can delete the two text variables from its definition and create them again

  • Inserting variable text - partial filename

    Our filenames are in this format:
    12345_Something_Something.indd
    InDesign can insert the entire filename as a text variable.
    What we want is for it to only insert the first 5 numbers – everything before the underscore — as a text variable. It would need to change every time the template is saved with a new filename. I’m thinking it’s possible to write a Javascript extension to do this in InDesign. I just don’t know Javascript at all.
    1) Is this even possible?
    2) What resources are available to help me get this accomplished?
    3) What is considered reasonable compensation for this project?
    Thanks for your help!

    Sychronization works by redefining same-named styles, variables, etc. to all use the same definition as the source document, so for example you might have a variable named <header> which in one file was a running header (character style) type, in another a running header (character style), but based on a different character style, and in yet another document is would be based on last on page instead of first on page, or a similar situation. Synching would cause the variable to look for the same information across all docs.
    That said, it sounds like this might be useful for adding a book file name, but there is a subtle difference. In the case of a normal variable, the information it picks up must be in the document where the variable is located. A running header variable ont he first page of a file in a book, for example, cannot pick up the information from the last page of the previous file in the book. Variables are self-contained within the files.
    You COULD define a custom text variable, perhaps with the book filename, and add it to all the documents, but it will not automatically update if you change the name of the book file.
