VCR to PC by ION

ION http://www.ionaudio.com/vcr2pc makes a device that transfers video to pc. Although the web site says it isn't compatible with Mac, has anyone out there had any experience with this working with IDVD or IMovie on our Macs? This seems to be an easy way to transfer tape video, I like it. But do I have to resort to a PC to do this, why doesn't the Mac have an easy way???
I am looking for a user friendly way to transfer old family video tapes (VHS, Hi-8) to my Mac so I can edit it and make DVD's for my kids. There seems to be so much confusion out there in this process. I am looking for an easy and inexpensive way to do this. HELP!

I have done lots of this.
To get your VHS video into iMovie, use the Grassvalley ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08/09 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 09).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source (VCR, Tivo, Satellite Receiver) and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).

I use iMovie 06 with iDVD 08/09 (iDVD 06 will work fine also.)

  • Question about recording from VCR to Qosmio

I want to record my old personal Videos from VCR tapes to DVD using my Qosmio F10. I plug the VCR analogue output via a coax cable into the Qosmio TV aerial input and set up the Qosmio to recognize the VCR input as just another TV channel. It records onto the hard drive using MCE but the quality is poor compared to the original video tape. The colors and sound are ok but the pictures are lacking in detail and clarity.
Is there a setting on the Qosmio that I can use to improve the quality or is it the type of input I am using. My old VCR only has a coax and scart output and I can't get the scart output to input to the Qosmio.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi Nicky,
Thanks for the response. By Composite do you mean RGB output from the VCR?
    The Qosmio has 3 inputs:-
    1. conventional TV coax
    2. S Video
    3. iLink - firewire
There is no straight RGB input tho'
Can I use the iLink with a scart output from a VCR? The iLink works fine with my Camcorder.

  • RECORDING DVD FROM VCR

HOW DO I RECORD A DVD FROM A VCR? I BOUGHT A APPLE MINI-DVI TO VIDEO ADAPTER AND A S CABLE ADAPTER, IT ALL HOOKS UP, BUT IT DOESN'T SHOW UP AS BEING THERE. HELP! ANYBODY! I WOULD LIKE TO DUB MY CHILDS MOVIES OF WHEN SHE WAS YOUNG BEFORE THEY ROT AWAY ON VCR TAPE. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

    FYI.
I recently purchased the EyeTV 200 (Firewire).
A refurb direct from Elgato for $200.
    opeyetv200refurb)
Yeah, I got the "200" because I'm transferring 300 training sessions from VHS to DVD. I use the RCA inputs (three wire plug type - white & red (sound) and yellow (video)). EyeTV200 does a fine job.
I also use our Canon GL2 to pass the video through the camera via firewire into my Intel iMac. I find EyeTV 200 easier (and I can watch and record TV!) while at work! (WaaHOO!)
This is for the analog signal. TEh EyeTV 500 is for
    digital cable.
Didn't know that. Saw the "500" but thought it was for HDTV only. Thanks for the info.
Comes with EyeTV software which allows you to view a
TV guide (titantv.com) and click what you want to
    record.
True! You can even schedule it to record like a VCR. I set it up to record "Amazing Race" before leaving work because the program comes on late and I wanted to see it. Got to work and there it was!
Has S-Video as well as Composite video and stereo
    audio inputs.
So true. I also have a VCR with S-Video and it works just dandy with EyeTV 200.
I'm in the process of putting my videos onto DVD with
    it.
Let's you save directly as MPEG 1, 2, or 4.
Also exports to DV, iPod, H.264, DIVX, HD720, HD1080.
    etc.
Between this and iDVD and iMovie HD, it's some pretty
    wicked stuff.
Ain't it so! Two happy EyeTV users playing on their Macs!

Repartition and format the drive for a Mac:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Unable to capture from VCR

I am trying to capture some video clips from VCR into Final Cut Pro to create a historical record for the family.
I have done this successfully in the past using moviebox dv however I recently upgraded my IMac and the new model has a firewire 800 port instead of a firewire 400 port like the last model I had. Since this upgrade I have been unable to use the moviebox dv as final cut does not even recognize it is there.
Are there any compatibility issues that anyone is aware of?
I am using a 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 20" IMac with osx 10.6.5
I have already posted in the wrong forum and got some suggestions,
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2709119&tstart=0
but none which have helped yet. They suggested I try in the FCPro forum, so here I am
Does anyone have any other suggestions or feedback?

Excellent ... but sadly you can confirm that the unit is operating properly with this cable?
Unfortunately this has been the experience of some folks trying to work with DV (FW100) devices connected to FW800 host ports on their computers. I don't know the cause of the issue specifically, but one workaround that has worked for many, including myself, is to pass (daisy chain) the signal via a different device that hosts both FW400 and FW800 ports ... for me, when using a Sony J1 deck, that was achieved by using an external FW drive that I had available. I connected the drive to the computer via FW800 and the J1 deck connected to the drive via FW400. It worked.

  • How do I use my HDV camera to capture VCR video into Premiere Elements?

Hello all, I am trying to put VHS video into my computer. I have read that my Canon HV30 can act as an interface between my VCR and my computer. I am supposed to connect my VCR to my HV30 and my HV30 to the computer through firewire. My question is this, how do I connect my VCR to my HV30? Which port on my HV30 is a video input? It has a yellow connection named "AV/(headphones logo)", and one called "component" that looks like a mini firewire port. It also has a red connection named "mic". The other connections are the typical firewire port and such, so it cant be those.? Thanks

I'm not sure if your camcorder can work as a pass-through between your VHS and computer. Fewer and fewer camcorders have this feature.
Is your camcorder able to record input from another video source? That's kind of the test. If you camcorder can record from your VCR then it can likely also serve as a pass-through.
But, sadly, this is one of the features that camcorder manufacturers have stopped including with their cams.

  • I am having problems syncing recently recorded songs to my iPod. I am using an ion program to record vinyl records to iTunes. The songs are in the iTune library and will play on the computer. When I try to sync they show up but do not play. help

I am using an ion piece of equipment to record vinyl reccords to my iMac and in turn save them in iTunes. I have recorded many records this way and have never had a problem until yesterday. I recorded three songs from records to iTunes and was successful as they are on the song list and will play on the iMac. When I tried to sync them to my iPod they showed up on the menu but would not play. The iPod just skipped over the new guys. Am I doing something wrong or has my ion program flipped out? Any help would be appreciated by this old man. Thankyou

This might sound weird, but here's an idea which worked for me re music that was newly added to itunes and showed up in my ipod but wouldn't play - I simply played the tracks in itunes first, just a second of time or so will do it, not the whole track, then connect the ipod and sync again and this time they played - hope this helps.

  • I have an ion guitar and I can't get it to play? It says I need to aggregate MIDI but I don't see that button on 10.6.8.

  • From VCR tape to Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I am looking to transfer my old home videos from VHS tape to DVD (dont want to buy a VCR with DVD recorder).  I was thinking of using my 13" Macbook Pro, the specs are
    Early 2011
    2.3GHz intel i5
    16gb RAM
    intel HD Graphics 3000 512Mb
and I hope to replace the HDD with an SSD.
Before I go looking for the tools to do it, I wanted to know if this spec of a machine could handle receiving video from a VCR and recording it
onto hard disc.  I know an SSD will help hugely but will the graphics on my machine make it impossible?
    Thanks,
    Kev.

You would need an analog-digital converter http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc110 . You then connect your VCR's video and audio outputs to the converter and connect the converter to your Mac via Firewire. Then play the video in your VCR and capture it in iMovie.

  • Recording on my VCR

I can view a taped program from my VCR to my TV, but can not record a program coming in from the FIOS box. I've hooked up the FIOS box to the VCR and then the VCR to the TV, but I can't record a program. How do I record a program with my VCR? Hope someone has the answer.

There are 2 or 3 ways to record from the STB. Some STB's have an RF output that can be connected to the VCR, and you can then record on Channel 3 or 4.  Not all STB's have RF output however.
All STB's have composite Video, and S-Video video available. You can connect either to an Aux input on your VCR. The Audio then has to be provided by inserting a y-cable into the Left and Right Audio Channels if you aren't using HDMI to your TV. This then allows you to send audio to both the TV and VCR at the same time. The Left and Right audio then need to be connected to the same Aux input you are using on the VCR for video input..
Note that on some VCR's, you must specifically activate the S-VHS input, the default Aux input is composite video.
S-Video will provide the highest quality picture, and RF the lowest.

  • Recording to a vcr

I have a toshiba sd 392 combo vcr/dvd player on the tv WITHOUT the multi-room dvr and I can't record any progams to the vcr.
Should I be able to record one show while watching another? I have the vcr/dvd player set to channel 3 and i can program my selection and the vcr shows that it's recording but when I playback there is no picture. HELP PLEASE

Thankyou for the info. I do have the multi-room dvr but some times it's never enough you know. Would a seperate dvr recorder
work without intrferring with verizons dvr? Thanks again.
No, you would still have the same issue. The only device that can record one thing and watch another is a DVR.
All DVD-recorders and VCR's will only be able to record the program that you are watching.
Now if you want seperate recorders, your choices are...
    Another DVR from Verizon
Or a 3rd party DVR (like TIVO or Moxie) plus a cable card from Verizon
Or a cable card from Verizon plus a Computer capture device such as the Ceton (to convert a computer to a DVR)
Those are about your only options.
Otherwise any DVD or VCR you get will have to be connected between the STB and TV and then you can record the program you are watching.

  • Recording from vcr

My 17 in G4 powerbook has svideo which allows me to watch movies on my tv. Question is, is this svideo conection in and out? I'd like to use it to record from my VCR to digitize some of my older vhs footage.
    Peter

I've converted VHS movies into a digital format. The easiest way to to that is to get an analog to digital converter box. I have an older version of http://desktop.grassvalley.com/products/ADVC55/index.php which works just fine with my Powerbook. They also make additional models with more features. If you have a video camera that allows an RCA input with a Firewire output, I'd guess that would also work.
The easiest way to do it is to use the iMovie application, then use iDvd to create a DVD. If you get into it, you may find some limitations in iMovie and iDvd, in which case Final Cut Express would be a good step up.

  • One Step DVD From VCR Patched Through Mini-DV

I guess the One Step method only works with Device Control inputs?
I've got my VCR patched through my MiniDV camera, and a Firewire cable to the Mac. When I choose One Step DVD, it looks for a tape in my camera. But I can capture in FCP with this same setup.
I guess iDVD 5.0 won't let me capture this way? I don't see any preferences I can change.
Also, is there a maximum length of capture in iDVD 5.0?
    Thanks!

I guess the One Step method only works with Device Control inputs?
Yep - OneStep will not work witout timecode.
    from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300735
Note: OneStep DVD will only capture from recorded tape on a DV camcorder or deck. OneStep DVD will not work with analog-to-DV converters. It will also not work if you are using your camcorder or deck as a pass-through device to digitize from an analog souce (such as VHS or Hi-8). In order to function, OneStep DVD reads the timecode from your DV tape and it relies on DV device control to communicate with the camera or deck.

  • I am trying to transfer my songs from an old to computer to a new computer on iTunes with Ion products

I am trying to transfer my music from an old computer to a new one.  Nothing I recorded from Ion (I have spent over 2 years on this, so I am almost in tears thinking I have wasted 2 years) is showing up on the new computer.  When I put a burned CD into the old computer, it lists title and artist.  When I put it in the new computer, it shows up as "unknown." It seems that I have a whole lot of unknown files I transfered, but they do not show up in Itunes.  To make matters wose, what did transfer (not Ion recorded items) is there multiple times.  Some things are there twice, some six times.  That makes no sense.
    Can someone please help?

  • I recently obtained a new solar-powered extender battery (2700 mAh Li-ion, maker not known) that I can't get to work.  Each time I plug it in, I get a notification from Apple saying I can't use it to charge the phone.  Why not, if I have the correct plug?

I do have another NewTrent charger that works okay, not great, because sometimes the connection is intermittent and it keeps connecting and disconnecting over and over.  So I was looking forward to trying this new charger, but Apple is blocking it for some reason.  Any idea why?

Unfortunately, I threw away the plastic packaging for the device, not realizing there was no manufacturer identified on the unit itself.  It just says it is ITEM 68691, 11c China.  It also appears to be rated for the correct voltage - Under SOLAR MOBILE PHONE CHARGER it says, 2700mAh li.ion Battery; 5.1VDC, 250mA
That's all there is except for a little round white label that has these numbers:  36100, and then underneath, 482012
Thanks for your comments.  Not sure what else to do, but maybe I can take it in to an Apple store and they can look at it.
