Vertical Black Lines on L & R edge after 4:3 PAL - 4:3 NTSC conversion

I used Hanumang's brilliant PAL to NTSC formula as follows:
"Load your DV PAL movie into Compressor 2, then choose Advanced Format Conversions > DV NTSC from the settings. Then, under the Frame Controls tab, alter your settings to:
Frame Controls: Custom
Resize Filter: Better (Linear Filter)
Output Fields: Bottom First
Deinterlace: Better Motion Adaptive
Adaptive Details: checked
Rate Conversion: Better (Motion Compensated)"
So does anyone have any idea why I'm getting a narrow black line on both vertical edges of the frame . . ? And more importantly - how I can get rid of them!
I know they won't show on a 4:3 TV but they may well show up on a wider screen if the background's not black.
I should add - for anyone who wants to use this method, it takes hours and hours - but it's well worth it - the quality's excellent. (I just wish I could get rid of the lines)!

Excellent!

To the letter.
> original PAL footage did NOT have this blanking
issue, correct?
None whatever.
>what are your video resolutions? what are
you previewing this video on (as in applicartion)?
FCP 5.0.4 - Easy Setup DV NTSC - New application - New Sequence (NTSC)
Blanking is there in the Viewer and Canvas.
Item Properties - Format - NTSC CCIR 601 720x480
> also, you can get rid of the vertical blanking by
cropping your video and then rescaling the video to
have the full frame of picture
Yes, I know that but it would be a very last resort - I want the best quality I can get.
> on a widescreen TV, assuming that the end user is using a
4x3 LB mode, you will still have letterbox pillars,
so it wont matter, as in, they will still have the
black mattes on the vertical lines
Not all TVs have a black background do they?
I just can't understand it . . . both formats are 720 wide - what could be causing this blanking?
(It's so annoying)!
Thanks for your help Mikey M.

  • Vertical Black Lines on edges after 4:3 PAL - 4:3 NTSC conversion

I hate to cross post - but few people seem to use the Compressor Forum and there's been zero response.
. . . and once you guys in the US go to beddy-bies, I'll lose another day with the time-lag!
Can anyone come up with a cure for this little PAL - NTSC problem?

Going from 576 vertical pixels to 480 vertical
pixels will involve scaling the video
    Of COURSE . . . !
Thanks for the tip, Trevor - when I read that, I compared the equivalent still from the PAL footage and realised the NTSC clip was squeezed!
I went through the Inspector settings and Constrain to Display Aspect was set to NONE. I've set this to 4:3 and it's cooking as I type . . .
    >I have produced NTSC DVDs from PAL source by creating a PAL
DVD in DVDSP, duplicating the project, deleting the
media, changing the project to NTSC and reimporting
the media. Encoding was done in DVDSP and the
results were fine for our purpose.
Not heard of this one - but I'll certainly try it when I get a chance. I strongly recommend Hanumang's recipe though - the quality's excellent.
But you need plenty of processor power. An 80 min movie I processed some weeks ago (chapter by chapter) took several days and nights - even on the Quad G5.
I feel it's well worth it though - and I can get on with other work (Photoshop, Word, Internet etc) while it's processing. FCP seems to be one of the few things you can't use while Compressor is working.
I'll post back when I have the result of my latest Compressor test.

  • Vertical black line artifact on JPEG exports

Tried to export 57 images to original sized JPEGS. Images were shot RAW on a Nikon D80. My problem is that some of the photos were exported with a thin black line down the middle of the image. Strangely, this only happened to my photos that were shot in portrait orientation. This line is not there in the RAW files, or in the Aperture previews. I also exported one of these images to Photoshop CS3 for editing and the vertical black line appeared in that conversion as well. Does anyone have any idea what's going on or how to fix it?
    Example here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1375121/black_line.jpg
I am running Aperture 3.0 and OSX 10.6.2 on a MBP 2.16 C2D with 2GB RAM. Aperture runs slowly, but otherwise seems to be working fine (except for the occasional green screen freakout when I'm using a brush).
    Thanks so much,
    Austin

Yes, the images in question definitely have Noise Reduction. I think I set the value over 1.6. So there's no solution? That's incredibly frustrating.
We only have to wait for a new release!!
I have also noticed that the Noise Reduction seems not to be applied to the exported version, at least not in the same way as it is applied to the master image. Have you noticed this?

  • Vertical black line om camera and photos

I have a vertical black line in my camera on my new iPhone 6. This black line also appers on photos I take. Something to do, or is it a pixel error?

the line is only visible on camera not on video. if it is the lens i think it would be visible both on picturs and videos.

  • How to eliminate vertical black lines, every inch, from photos that I print.

When I print my photos using Elements 13, I get vertical black lines every inch.  This does not happen when I print from other software.  What can cause this and how do I get rid of these?

As Bruce said in post #4 the lines in the OP's question look very much like anti aliasing, but they might also be sharpening artifacts.  So, if these lines appear as a result of resizing the image, then the obvious question is which resize method is being used?  Preserve Details when upsizing might do that for instance.  (I do hope I haven't upset Chris Cox by misrepresenting Preserve Details).
So the question is, if you make the tile at one size, and try to use it at a larger size, how is the tile being upsized?  In fact I am not even sure that you can change the size of a custom pattern without redefining it.  Anyone?

  • Vertical black lines down middle of page

    Hi folks,
I have an LaserJet 4250n that's putting vertical light black smudges/lines down the center of my pages. It's all the way down, but it gets lighter at certain points and picks back up again. I've tried replacing the toner cartridge and cleaning the rollers, to no avail.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi James,
I am a printer technician for HP in Australia and a full time employee. I look after many printers including this one.
Lines down the page can be caused by a few things - depending on what the line looks like.
If it is a smudged dirty streaky mark continously down the page, you migh have a dirty fuser - it may have been picking up toner and it has built up and then put it back down on the paper.
A thin defined black line might be a scratched drum or developer - the laser might be refracting and drawing the defect onto the drum.
Blank or white lines could be something stopping the toner from getting to the paper - transfer roller under the toner might have something stuck on it.
A repeated mark or defect could also be a dirty fuser - glue or wax from envelopes and labels could do this.
Try swapping the toner with another to test - borrow one if you can.
Run 3 or 4 cleaning pages - in the menu, configure device, print quality menu, create/process cleaning page.
Remove the fuser - back door comes off, little blue clips, pull it. out - rotate using the green knob and you might be able to gently remove something stuck in it.
If you can get to another 4250 or 4350 you could borrow the fuser and find out.
For this machine, I find worn out fusers and dirty printers are most commonly showing these symptoms.  Next common is low quality after market cartridges.
Hope I can help you here

  • Vertical black line running down imac screen

This morning i noticed for the first time (wasn't there yesterday) a thin black vertical line running down my 21' imac screen.
    Any suggestions?

Take a screen shot & view that in Preview, move the Preview window around, if you see 2 black lines it a Video card/VRAM problem, if the line does not move moving the pic around then it's the LCD or cable.

  • My screen has a vertical black line

I have only been using my new iPad for a few hours and a vertical thin black line has appeared on the screen. I presume I have a defective iPad and need a replacement. Is that correct?

Me too. It is a band of black and colored lines running vertical in landscape and horizontal in portrait about two inches wide. It's cover over all apps and all the time. Reboot, restore is no help but touch function works fine across the stripes. The screen capture from the iPad1 does not appear the band of black and colored lines. It shows a normal screen. The answer when asked at the Genius Bar is, they never seen this problem before. And the solution that fix the problem may be expensive. But when searching on Google with the keyword "iPad half screen black" it's return 64,800,000 results. Some user comment that the video display hardware on the system board has been damaged. It's possible something has been dislodged or come loose. But, again, why this happened to many many users in the same period? In most cases the iPad never drop. It's happened immediately with no sign of warning. There are no ways to fix it right now. The iPad1 is just 2 years released. Is it too early to replace with the iPad3?

  • Copies have vertical black lines added

Copies from original document which was fed through document feeder sudddenly have heavy black vertical line from top to bottom of left side of copy. This is not present if original document is placed on glass. This is not present on prints from computer. Cleaning rollers, glass, etc. has not helped. This was not a gradual process. This occurred suddenly.

There are probably dark stains or dirt spots on the ADF scanner glass. Each of these spots would translate to a black line. Try clean the ADF scanner glass, with lint free cloth.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus - vertical black lines only when autofeed

I have multiple black lines (darkest about 3 inches from left) when I autofeed a print document. When I feed a clean sheet, I get the single dark line. There are no lines if I copy using the top glass,  I followed the HP autofeed cleaning instructions TWICE. The white rollers were clean and only slight black smudge on the black rollers. I am certain this has happened to others...Oh yes, my HP warranty expired in late March (Costco may cover it if this is not a simple fix).
I would appreciate any assistance, as this has been a great printer.

This article should help out with the problem you are facing. Give the steps outlined a try and let us know if it helps.

  • How do I remove the black line of the original artboard after increasing the size?

I increased my document from 8.5"x11" to 22"x34" and a black line of the original document remains.  Can anyone tell me how to get rid of it?  It is not selectable - the word "x page" appears when my cursor hovers on it.  I'm working in C6. Thanks for your help!

    You are welcome, Posterongarth.
Are you sure you have not created two Artboards?
I believe someone with CS6 will have to give further answers.

  • Vertical black line with shade dots down left side of page - NEW Cartridge

I installed a NEW cartridge and was able to print about 30 pages before the paper began having a 1/16" black stripe with shade(?) dots down the left side.  Could someone please advise.
    Thank you,
    Erin

    Thanks.
I am very new to Pages. Yesterday I decided to go after a "Brochure" template, as it already had at least one vertical line separating text passages on the left and right. But there were too many sections, so I went about deleting all the extraneous, unwanted lines. And also the unwanted horizontal lines. To do this, you have to click the line itself to discover where the "nodes" are. But the nodes are locked, so you have to go to the top control bar of the desktop. (I think that this is the option titled "arrange").
It appears that the secret to tinkering with the lines in the templates, is by unlocking the nodes to the lines, dragging them around, and then locking them in place again, saving them between major changes. In any case, none of this is going to be intuitive to users who come to the Mac from a text based 'DOS' universe. (I have absolutely no experience with Microsoft products, and would be lost if somebody asked me to do this from Windows.)
Now, I think I am going in the right direction, and I appreciate your help, but I'm still having a little difficulty switching back and forth from editing templates, and typing text in. What are the sequences of keypresses for going back and forth from editing the templates, and typing the text in?

Have you upgraded to iPhoto 9.6 for compatibility with Yosemite? If not, try that first.
It looks like iPhoto has lost the connection between the thumbnails and the original image files.
This can be caused by a corrupted iPhoto library, or the originals have been deleted or moved.
Try first to rebuild your iPhoto Library:
If you do not have a current backup of the iPhoto library, make a copy of the library, but do not overwrite any previous backup.
Launch iPhoto with the ⌥⌘-key combination (option-command) held down.
Select "rebuild" from the first aid panel.  This may take a while for a large library.
Can you now see your photos again?
If not, rebuild the library with iPhoto Library manager as described by Old Toad:            Re: iphoto crashed
