Vertical Lines!! Kernal Panics !!!! Please Help

Hi this is my first post to the forums. I thank you all in advance for answers. I have an IMAC 24'' 3.06 GHZ 4GB RAM that is displaying some weird characteristics. The first is the lines from left to right that are vertical. The first set is 4 lines then sets of 3. This is happening all across the screen. I have a W8 serial and saw something about defected computers is this true? I have the Applecare extended for 430+ more days and I already had a crash on the HD. Now I am having more problems. The lines worried me the most, but also I am receiving Kernal Panics. I can't even get the computer to load up. I spoke with Applecare over the phone and they referred me to the store. I got sent away twice before they finally got my computer in the store. I have now been to the store three times this week alone. Most importantly is the vertical line issue a permanent issue? I purchased the unit in July of 2008. I hope my unit is not defective. Now they are telling me they are going to replace the Logic Board as well as HD. They said this time it wasn't an HD issue but they are going to replace the HD to placate me since I have been there three times this week. The new HD is 640GB. Original is 500. If the HD is not bad are they truly accomodating me or is it deceptive practices to hide their constant issues with the CPU. I just want to find out why they are causing me to do all of this running around. I have spent over 5 hours on Phone with Applecare. I worry if this computer is going to be a recurring problem. Are the vertical lines symptoms of other issues down the road. My confidence is slowly eroding. I will give the full serial If that helps. Thanks!
Sincerely,
Adam('s Apple)

How do I get to Customer Relations?
Just call 1-800-275-2273 and asked to be transferred to ACR. CALMLY explain the situation to them and have all your case numbers ready. If you don't get satisfaction with the first call, call back and talk to another rep. I went through 3 of them one time, but Apple came through in the end to my satisfaction. They will do what it takes to make you happy.

  • Regular Kernal Panics - please help.

    Hey,
    No issues running Leopard so far, it's failed to wake a few times but otherwise a good experience. That was until yesterday when my MacBook decided to repeatedly panic causing a transparent black box to appear with a power logo telling me to restart the computer .
    When it restarts this is the report it chucks out. This has now happened more than 10 times in as many hours. Always the same info in the report. Any ideas - suggestions - ANYTHING!?!

    I think that you got the same Panic as I have on my brand new MacBookPro. I have no usb devices attached, so I think you can safely rule that one out. Zapping the PRAM will not help. My machine crashes frequently as well. (My machine also failed to wake up once, and then I got this same crash message, so that might be this very same problem again.)

  • Repeated Kernal Panic - please help

    Hi,
    I have over the past month or so experienced repeated crashes of my MBP.
    I have done the following prior to this process:
    Upgraded from OS Lion to OS X 10.9.1
    Purchased and installed Final Cut Pro
    The system and apps are all updated.
    Mostly used applications are:
    Adobe Lightroom v4
    Final Cut Pro
    Microsoft Word
    Firefox
    Safari
    iTunes
    I really hope you can help me pinpoint the issues here.
    Thanks in advance
    /Stephen Odgaard

  • Kernal Panic - please help

    Hi.
    My screen dimmed and I got the dreaded message "You need to restart you computer" in 4 languages, in white text. I was not doing much when it happened. Had recently restarted and wasn't running many apps. I think I simply moved the cursor and then the screen dimmed.
    This happened to me about one year ago, three times in a few days. I read the panic logs then, and saw Logitech mentioned every time. I use a logitech trackball. I bought a new one, and that fixed it. I suspect there was a short in the cable.
    This time I don't see Logitech mentioned.
    Here is the panic log. Can anyone decipher this and give me any advice? Thank you.

    I didn't see anything in the panic log, however, hardware is the usual culprit. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?

    I have a PowerBook G4 17" and need Apple discs to set it up again. Mine lost during move. Screen seems damaged, has vertical lines.  Can anyone help. I can call as I have unlimited calling on my iPhone 6  anywhere in North America.

    king,
    If your Powerbook's serial number (do not post it here) starts with "W8" then the vertical lines are mostly likely due to a defect in the display itself. W8 is a factory code and, during the iMac G5 and PowerBook G4 timespan, that factory shipped thousands of units with the same defect. It cannot be fixed via software.
    As all PowerBooks are now classed as "obsolete," an Apple Store will not work on it. They will look at it ands tell you it has vertical lines and that they cannot fix it. This Apple article shows Apple devices they curently considered obsolete:
    Vintage and obsolete products - Apple Support
    It is possible that some Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) will still work on older computes but they cannot get neededparts from Apple. As this issue was so pervassive, it wil be hard for you or an AASP to find a used/pulled display that is not effected with the "W8 Curse."
    Although I love the old PowerBooks, I would not even spent the money for disks, much less the US$150-400 it would cost to replace the display, even should one be available.
    If you give us a rough idea of where you are in the world, we can suggest repair shops specializing in fixing older Mac notebooks, but be aware those resources may be rather scare outside North America.

  • Counting lines problem. Please help!!

    Hi all,
    I just have a small problem i cannot resolve, here it is: I read through a file and i like to count the lines of the file there is before a special word.
    E.g
    My file contains:
    "hi
    how are you
    my name is john
    and i live
    britain"
    I'd like to count how much lines there are in the file before the word LIVE ==> result would be 4.
    I proceed with StreamTokenizer, but i don't knor how to specify the word. Here is my code:
         try {FileReader fr = new FileReader("test2.dat");
                   BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(fr);
                   StreamTokenizer stk = new StreamTokenizer(br);
                   do {
                   n = stk.nextToken();
                   li = stk.lineno();
                   if (n == stk.TT_NUMBER) {
                        n = stk.nextToken();
                   if (n == stk.TT_EOL) {
                        li++;
                        n = stk.nextToken();
                   if (n == stk.TT_WORD) {
                        String str = stk.sval;
                        if ("entier".equals(str)) {
                             System.out.println(li);
                        else {
                             n = stk.nextToken();
                   while (??????????????);
    I want here to specify the word "entier" but how to do this??
    Thanks very much for your precious help....

A: Counting lines problem. Please help!!

Use LineNumberReader, which counts lines for you. Here's a complete program in 16 lines:
import java.io.*;
public class test4 {
  public static void main(String[] argv) {
    if (argv.length < 2) { System.err.println("no arg"); System.exit(0); }
    try {
      LineNumberReader in = new LineNumberReader(new FileReader(argv[1]));
      String line;
      while((line = in.readLine()) != null)
        if (line.indexOf(argv[0]) != -1)
          System.out.println("Found match at line " + in.getLineNumber());
    } catch (IOException e) {
      e.printStackTrace();
}If you want case insensitivity, you can make both lines lower-case before searching. Or you can use regular expressions.

    Hi Jason--
    Hmm. I'd look at a couple of things. First, most of your panics mention USB in the backtrace, so have you recently installed a game controller or joystick or something like that? Especially if you had to install a driver for it (and had to reboot the computer, which would most likely mean a kernel extension).
    The particular panic you're getting comes from the part of the operating system that manages memory allocation for peripherals. It's saying that it can't allocate that memory because the memory it's trying to allocate can't be used ("not mapped for I/O" in your log).
    Disconnect all USB peripherals except your keyboard and mouse and see if you get the panic. And if you can borrow a keyboard and mouse from someone, you might try that, too.
    Finally, this page has information on how to resolve kernel panics. He recommends you follow the procedures there in order. I especially agree with his suggestion to run the Apple Hardware Test first to rule out hardware failures.

  • New Kernal Panic question - Help needed desperate!

    Hi All,
    This is the first time I have used the Forum and am hoping that someone can help. I'm having a huge issue with my iMac G5. I had iTunes playing two days ago and no other programmes open at the time. I left my desk for no more the 10 minutes and when I returned I had a message in four languages telling me to restart my computer. I have tried this but now when I try to turn on my iMac, the only screen I get now is the kernal panic and then the fans kick in really loud. Now comes the part where you sit there and shake your head at me! I have read that I should press the option key when turning the iMac back on, the only problem is, I don't know which is the option key!! If someone could let me know it would be much appreciated. Also any other advise would be great as I have no idea what to do.

    Hi RYork,
    Which model of iMac G5 do you have? Is it:
    a) one of the original iMac G5's, sold new up til the beginninhg of May 2005,
    b) one of the "ALS" models , with a little "light sensor" bump on the back of the grill on the bottom edge of the computer, an inchor two to the right of the big "Apple" Logo, sold between late April and October, 2005, or
    c) one of the later models with a built in iSight camera, sold after October 12th, 2005?
    THe first step here ideally involves resetting the SMU of the computer. The process differs depending on the model that you have. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733 for the two later models and dot point 2, paragraph 9 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 for the more complicated process for the original "first generation" model .
    You should disconnect all peripherals other than your keyboard and mouse when troubleshooting this sort of problem. USB hubs and USB ADSL routers are particularly common causes of problems, so make sure you lose both of these especially hwile trying to find the problem. As you have indicated that you are suspicious of your keyboard you may even want to try restarting with it disconnected , too, after trying the SMU reset.
    The option key is called the "alt" in the UK. Using this is only going to help if you have a second disc with an operating system to start from though. This could be the iMac G5 DVD that came with your computer, or an external firewire drive with a system installed on it.
    If your computer is one of the "first generation" models mentioned above it is quite possible that you have a serious hardware problem. There is an "extension repair" program in place for these computers, even if they are out of warranty, because of the well known hardware problems, so check the details of the program at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302181 .
    You say that your husband has a laptop, but you don't say whether it is an Apple or not. If it is then it may be possible to undertake some further troubleshooting using something called "Target Disk Mode", so let us know what it is.
    But this keyboard has me worried first of all. If an SMU reset doesn't solve the problem, then disconnect EVERYTHING and see if the computer will now start up before going further down the troubleshooting path.
    Cheers
    Rod

    anyone knows what's wrong with this?? thanks

    Hello there. I have done a little research and everything I have found points to a bad memory module. I would try booting from the install CD and running a complete hardware test and checking those results. If everything passes, and you feel comfortable, remove one of your RAM sticks and reboot the computer. See if you get a panic then. If so, swap the sticks and reboot with the other. If you don't get a panic, then you most definitely have a bad piece of memory. In that case, call AppleCare and they'll send you another. But if all this seems too much trouble, you could always take your computer to an Apple Store and let them do it for you, or call Apple Care and have a chat with them.
    Hope you get the problem figured out. I know it stinks!

  • LR 2.6 panic, please help

    Hello
    I have just updated to version 2.6
    Now lightroom does not show pictures any more.
    All the collections are there, picture count is ok, the thumbnails are there but blank, with the ratings ok.
    If I select a thumbnail, the information on the right is ok, metadata is ok, edited info is ok...
    in other words, everything is ok, except I can't see any image!
    Not in the thumbnails, and neither in the single image window for editing.
    I tried reload catalog, restart program, nothing.
    I don't know what to try.
    Please help.
    Orio

    I solved my own problem. I changed the monitor's colour profile and the images went back. Strange.

  • Vertical lines on screen? Help!

    Anyone have these awful vertical lines on screen?  They just showed up. If you take a screen shot you can't see them. How do I fix this? This happened when I was activating and syncing phone.

    Those are temporary fixes and will get you up and running. I think you should call Apple or bring it back to the Apple Store BEFORE you try and resolve the vertical lines problem.
    I had the same problem come up after my MacBook did not go to sleep and after force shutting it down, several times I ended up with the vertical lines problem. It may be a prelude to the Random Shutdown problem as my MacBook developed that problem about two weeks after the vertical lines problem.
    Just a thought...

  • Constant Kernel Panics- Please help!

    Hi,
    I am currently running Mountaint Lion 10.8.5 (haven't updated to mavericks quite yet) on a 2.53 GHz Intel core 2 duo Macbook Pro.  I'm not sure of the year it was made but if that's really important I can look up the serial.  Anyways, this thing is making me crazy.  Kernel Panics ("your computer shut down because of a problem") have become an extraordinarily common part of my life.  The more demanding the task (LOW resolution games would be the most demanding), the more frequent the Panics. Sometimes it even happens when I'm just browsing or watching netflix.  Usually before the kernel panic occurs the computer has heated up quite a bit and the fan starts wurring like an engine.  I do consistently use my laptop on my bed; I heard that may be affecting the airflow to the vents.  But I assure you the Panics occur on flat surfaces as well.  I bought this machine used so I don't know it's full history, but under my care, it has taken no spills, drops, or damages otherwise.  I have tried many things to help: Repairing my hard drive with Disk Utility, resetting my PRAM, cleaning things up with MacKeeper, even global virus scans that come up clean.  I don't claim to be any kind of expert, but I have tried all the tools at the disposal of my knowledge and I am really starting to get frustrated.
    My last OS update was recent; far after panics started to be a problem.
    I pray to god this is not a hardware issue.
    Any help would be of the highest appreciation

    PS I don't know if anyone could help with this, but my machine also runs unbelievably slow considering it has 8 whopping Gigabytes of RAM.

    Aaron is a boy,
    you can replace your two 4 GB 1333 MHz memory modules with two 4 GB 1066 MHz memory modules, so that you can continue to have a total of 8 GB of RAM installed. Having the proper speed RAM installed in your MacBook Pro will make a world of difference compared to its current performance. The little white booklet that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro shows how to replace the memory modules, if you’re comfortable with performing minor upgrades; the important thing is to discharge any static electricity on you by touching something metallic before handling the memory modules or touching anything inside of your MacBook Pro. If you’d be more comfortable with someone else doing the memory module installation, then any competent computer shop would be able to do it.

    If you have upgraded the RAM, the likely cause is upgraded RAM or some other hardware issue. Sources of RAM caused KP's are:
    Failed RAM
    Incorrect RAM
    Unseated RAM
    Start by removing all upgraded RAM and replace with the original RAM the computer shipped with and then test. If they KP's disappear you know your issue is RAM related to the upgraded RAM.

  • Kernal panic issue help

    ive been getting the must restart screen usually coming out of sleep and after restarting sometimes ill have to do it 3-4 times ive done my homework , still happens after unpluging all pereferals ,ive reset PRAM ive reset pow mang unit, ran disk utillities not only archive but did full erase and install and after e&i was not having prob. slowly added pereferals over a few days like lexmark z23, seagate hard drive (for backup only) a microsoft intellimouse expl 2 wireless mouse thinking that when must restart problem occurs, at the report to apple sceen afterward the dates within it would help find specific issue but none of the dates within. ive done all applesite has suggested. my printer and mouse software says its for macosx can anyone give me some feedback or sugestions
    what can it be and can anyone make sense of the error report after problem restart if i were to post it? thanks a million

    HI, ken.
    See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
    My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein. While you may have done some of the things cited in the FAQ, the order in which they are done can be critically important, hence the roadmap.
    If you post the panic log, I will endeavor to see what it can tell us. Instructions on posting the panic log are also found in my FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Kernal Panic - any help?

    Hi I got a KP shut down today. Wondering if anyone can help. It happened when I closed Quicktime 7 (which I use regularly). No third-party RAM, nothing else fishy that I know of (lastest version of flash, etc). I also have problems with the computer occasionally not waking from sleep.
