Very beginner POI and import question

I am reasearching/playing around with the Jakarta POI. My boss would like to load word docs/xls into the database in binary form - he then wants to display them Read Only to the end users. He suggested that I look into using the POI.
I've been reasearching the forums here and google but I havent found a great example implementing this. Everything I have found is way way over my head. Could someone point me to a very simple example of doing this? Or give me a very basic skeleton of what I would need to do to just open a word doc - I am trying to use this time to teach myself how to use/read the API(poi) - if that makes any sense...
Secondly - while I was reading on POI I ran across this: import java.io.*; // don't ever do this...done to save space I know it says it is to save space but is that because it imports all the classes under IO? I know its a stupid question but I have seen it in other examples and use it in other jsp's... I just copied and pasted so I didnt really know why or what I was doing...
Source of comment: http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2003/01/22/poi.html - Appendix 1/ Example 1

Also wanted to add that my boss would like to store
the file as binary into database, extract the file
from database, change it back to native format in a
temporary directory and then use the POI to present it
as read only??
Is there any easier way? This still just seems like a
straight forward process being made harder then it
is...I thought i just told you how to do all of that?! You can only really store documents and files etc. as binary in a database column, unless the file is plain text (which these are not) and even then you would lose all of the formatting. So, don't worry about the binary aspect of it, as you will prob be storing the file as a BLOB anyway. You don't have to change the file back to its native format either, as if you have stored a file as binary, and you know the name (most importantly the extension), then when you write the binary to a file of that name, it IS in the original format. You can write a java webDAV client easily with the tools and libraries available in such packages as Jakarta Slide. In the past this API has been... lets just say, hard to grasp... due to documentation problems, delayed features etc. However, the traffic around the project seems to have increased dramatically since I last used it properly. Plus, you can extend this store to manage any kind of document or file.
Oh and by the way, I would suggest you try to do this on the web... basically because IE (as prob with other browsers) can view MS office docs in the browser window itself. Very helpful thing that!
Is this helping you or not?

  • Very Basic Package and Import question

    Thanks in advance ...
    - I read/tried all tutorials and documents on the matter
    - the programs are from "Java 2 from scratch" book (Steven Haines)
    - I suspect the problems result from using new SDK 1.4.2 version versus SDK 1.2.1 (that the book uses)
    OK, here we go :
    package Stock1.PortfolioTotalsPanel;
    - first line in PortfolioTotalsPanels.java file
    package Stock1.StockTablePanel;
    - first line in StockTablePanel.java file
    package Stock1.StockTableTabPanel;
    - first line in StockTableTabPanel.java file
    --- then:
    Import Stock1.PortfolioTotalsPanel ;
    Import Stock1.StockTablePanel ;
NOW : I guess I have to compile 'PortfolioTotalsPanels' and 'StockTablePanel' on their own - which I did successfully and kept the '.class' in the same directory (folder) - Stock1
When trying to compile 'StockTableTabPanel.java' file...
    StockTableTabPanel.java : cannot resolve symbol
    Symbol : class StockTablePanel
    Location: class Stock1.StockTableTabPanel.StockTableTabPanel
    StockTablePanel stockTablePanel = new StockTablePanel();
...and the same error message for 'StockTablePanel' class.
    - I noticed the last line has 'stockTablePanel' instead of 'StockTablePanel' ...not sure if it makes a difference..same with the 'portfolioTotalsPanel'
    I'm out of ideas...HELP !!

    c:\javastuff\Stock1> cd ..
    c:\javastuff> javac Stock1/StockTablePanel.java Stock1/PortfoloiTotalsPanels.java
to run them, run them from this root directory:

  • Newbie export and import question

Here's the next part. I have a system with roughly 3+ billion records.
My design is to convert the data in the company's db to ours. The db is still in production so my thinking was to export a day's worth of data using Oracle's exprt functionality. Export takes parameters so I can give it psuedo code like export... where date = yyyy/mm/dd.
On the oracle export faq it says it may not work well with large data sets. On daily average could Oracle export 3M records and import it into another table?
It's on this table I'd put the sequence - from thread Sequence question, need to prefix the sequence with a 4 digit incrementing
    Thanks

Sounds like the worst possible solution but then you provided no information as to version numbers, latency, number of tables, transaction size, partitioning, or number of tablespaces.
Assuming a currently supported version of the product why not?
    1. Transportable tablespaces
    2. Streams
    3. DataPump
    4. External tables
Export/Import is deprecated technology. It should be the option of last resort.

  • Broken clips from CF card and import question

I'm new to recording on a CF card and importing it into fcp. I shot an hour yoga session without stopping the camera the entire time. I recorded it in DV format. I'm using a Sony Z5 with a HVR-MRC1 card recorder. When I open the folder on the CF card I have 3 clips for that entire time of recording... each taking off from where the previous ended. Shouldn't it be just one clip since I didn't stop the camera from recording? they are avi files also.
Importing. I'm seeing discussions about using a free download from sony. Is this just for HD? or will this download help with my DV clip breakage problem I discussed above. Here's the link I followed...
    http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-broadcastcameras/resource.solutions.bbsccms-ass ets-cat-cambroprod-solutions-HDVfinalcutproTC.shtml.
When I import DV I have been just copying the file from the CF card to a folder on my Raid Array and then importing it into fcp. BUT why do I need to render it? I get the red line when I drop it in the timeline.
SO slightly confused on if I need the download... and why I need to render. Any help appreciated.

It depends on your cam's specs. The Canon 7D I have for instance only records 12 minutes at a time. (it is CF card as well) I couldn't find the specs for your cam.
Usually a plug-in for importing into FC for example lets you convert the video to something more 'editable' and not compressed. If you drop something into your timeline and the redline appears, it means your timeline settings differ from the dropped in clip and that is why it needs to be rendered.

  • Bizzare cddb and importing question

I have had problems importing CDs onto my ibook G4 for sometime. At first I thought my optical drive was messed up but after talking to a genius and having diagnostic tests run everything seemed to be fine. So left to my own trouble shooting and experimenting I have come to the conclusion that my CDs import fine if I don't get CDDB info until after they are imported. If I get the CDDB info before trying to import it either imports with lots of digital static and popping or just freezes up iTunes completely. I realize this doesn't make much sense but I was hoping someone could tell me either a) how to fix the problem or b) at least how to get my computer to "forget" that I have tried to get track information for a CD. Once my computer recoginzes my CD I have little chance of it importing correctly and I would like to have my computer "think" that I am inserting a CD for the first time so that I can import it and then either manually enter the information or get track information after it is imported. Thanks.

Very strange problem indeed, for which I can't think of a direct solution.
There is a script available here, that might provide a workaround.
It will enable/disable access to Gracenote by changing the Firewall settings.
You could give it a try.
    Hope this helps.

  • Robohelp 8 HTML - VERY basic layout and naming question.

OK, I'm sure this must be obvious to everyone else because I can't seem to find it in the places I've searched. My personal experience with Help files isn't helping (yeah, I know, bad pun).
I'm creating a RoboHelp HTML file from a PDF file.
While importing the file I'm given the option to create a new topic based on a style. Great so far. Having done so as an experiment and looked at the output I'm of the feeling that a 'topic' is "an HTML document that would, in theory, cover an area of interest, hence the term topic".
Then I open IE's help file I see the contents like "Finding the Web Pages You Want" and "Browsing the Web Offline". Neither of them can be selected to show information in the right pane, but both open to show what I'll call 'sub-topics', each of which DOES open what appears to be an html document in the right pane.
Adobe's help files are a bit easier to deal with, I just navigate to the Help folder and there are all the HTML files.
So I'm confused and I've got a major mental block that's making it difficult to proceed without getting a layout/hierarchy. And if this information is in Robohelp's help or available someplace online, just smack me in the back of the head and point me in the right direction because I'm not seeing it.
In the Internet Explorer help, what do I call the links in the left pane on which I can click to bring up a page in the right pane? What do I call the items I can highlight that, when clicked, show a list of the clickable links? And is it accurate that if I ask RoboHelp to create a topic out of each of a given style, then I'll have a separate HTML document for each instance of that style?
    Thanks,
    Solon

Hi there and welcome to the wonderful wild and wacky world of Help Authoring!
The area on the left side is typically called a "Navigation Pane". The Navigation Pane usually has different views. Table of Contents (TOC), Index, Glossary and of course, Search.
The Table of Contents view has a Books and Pages metaphor. Each Book contains Pages inside. Each Page links directly to an individual HTML file (Topic).
Indeed if you are sucking content in from PDF, RoboHelp has to be told what the criteria is to break the long PDF document into individual HTML topic pages.
Hopefully this helps a smidge... Rick

  • Newbie LR database and import question

I have LR on order and am going through a tutorial that seems to imply one should always import files to a common folder. I currently have about 400gig of files spanning 38 main folders, with many subfolders. It's a structure I know and do not plan on changing. After looking at the FAQ and getting through the first few chapters of a tutorial it appears that LR may be needing to look at a single huge folder. Is that the case? I eschewed iPhoto right off the bat due to the way it forced me to manage images. Will LR allow me to "import" my existing structure and be able to see and work with the current folder structure?

No need to reorganize your originals, you can keep them right where they
    are.
You will be creating one or more catalogs that contains thumbnails and
adjustments for your images, but you never need to move or even change
    your original images.
When you 'import' your images, all you are doing is creating thumbnails
in a catalog. You just "Import in place".
Based on the instructions that you provide for each image, when you need
an adjusted image you will be creating an adjusted copy (an export) of
the image, saved in a different place than your original image.
Your original image never needs to be moved or touched.

  • BMG Music and Importing Question

I have quite a few cd's from BMG music. I want to import them into itunes but I don't want to have to type in each name. I already have a huge list of music that is labeled track 1, track 2, etc. I want the info to be imported too. How do I do this?

It's not entirely necessary to be connected to the internet at the time of importing. As long as you select all of the songs on the CD that was imported, do a Get Info on them, name the CD title, and then connect to the internet at a later date, Gracenote CDDB should recognize and fill in the song titles, etc for you.
You'd have to select the songs that were imported from the CD in iTunes and then go to Advanced > Get CD Track Names when connected to the internet.

  • EDL Exporting and Importing 101 - Questions

We are testing Premiere's EDL exporting and importing capabilities for the first time, and are having issues. We set up a very simple test project with only 13 clips and a timeline with only 10 edits. This is what it looks like:
    http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/760/j00s.jpg
We then exported an EDL, started a new Premiere project, and imported the EDL that we had created. It looks like this:
    http://imageshack.us/scaled/landing/32/6hd9.jpg
In the bin, Premiere has now turned our 13 clips into 41. There are a lot of duplicates, some of them appear to be audio files, even though they're still listed as .mxf, and the start and end times are all over the place. Our two questions are: Why is it making all of these clips? And how do you link the media? We started linking some media manually, but because the start and end times are scrambled, the edits appear completely wrong in the sequence that we've created.

There are a variety of options offered when exporting an EDL.
These options need to be considered in conjunction with how the Sequence (audio/video layers) are set up. (managed for the edl export)
Source footage management is vital in any EDL workflow and even more so when digital clip based ( as opposed to tape based linear assets).  ie. Digital clips have "unusual" filenames and are buried deep in folder structures. Filenames can be duplicated in a card to cards system. (mxf would be an exception)
The EDL is usually used between systems.
In your case  you are testing on the same system and assumeably the source footage resides there as well.  This is a case for managing the "source" so as the links work.
Example. When I take footage to a Resolve Suite out of house.  I set up all the source footage on an transfer drive in the same manner ( filenames, folder names etc) as the original local drive .

  • Very Urgent - Export Oracle 10G and Import Oracle 9i

    Dear Friends,
I am in a very tense sitution. Please help to sort out this problem. I am running an application against Oracle 10G. Now I want the the data of the application running under 10G(server A) to be imported to Oracle 9i (another Server B) and run the same application. What should I do so that i can export the data from Oracle 10G and import in Oracle 9i.
Please treat this as very urgent.

You need to post your question in the database forum. This forum is for Oracle Forms. There are database tools such as SQL Developer that let you move data back and forth between databases.

  • A very important question for every After Effects user

a very important question for every After Effects user, from product manager Steve Forde:
    http://adobe.ly/1exI6tI

Tom Daigon Great idea everybody! Encourage Adobe to do ONLY ONE THING with AE for 2014. Since theres not a heck of a lot of development that can be done on the present foundation, they can really stretch the rental scheme out for many years. And once you get used to the concept, every year they will do ONE THING to placate you. So now they have you swallowing no "ownership" of software and limited development.

  • Question regarding Export and Import

First let me say that any software that comes without a save button should be sold with a warning label.
Question 1:  I have having an issue comprehending how to save a photo.  In my case  I select the photo, zoom in on the subject, export it to my desktop. The pciture on my desktop does not incorporate the change. Am I missing a step? What do I need to do to export it with this change? I actually watched a You Tube video on this and could not see what i was not doing.
Question 2: I just installed Lightroom and am trying to import my 12k strong photo collection. The Import button pulls in about 2k and then cannot find anymore. The photos are stored in folders by date within a master folder. I am selecting the master folder. I can go in and import the sub-fodler individually. However i do not want to do that 200 times. There is no apparent way to go into the subfolder level and select more than one folder.
Can anyone help me upgrade my opinion of Lightroom from it's current level of POS to usuable?

You must have selected the wrong option in the Export dialog box. Under "File Settings", you need to select JPG and not "Original". Of course, you probably need to do some additional viewing of videos (or some reading) to learn that most people's workflow does not automatically include a "Save" or "Export" after editing the photo. It's not a necessary part of Lightroom's workflow, unless you need the photo for some non-Lightroom activity.

In the Import dialog box, on the left, under "Source", there is a checkbox that says "Include SubFolders". Make sure this is checked.
Seriously, you need to spend some time reading introductory material about LR because Lightroom does not work like any other photographic software you might have used in the past. You are handling it as if it was no different than standard photo editing software, and you are going to be frustrated if that is your mindset. • Question regarding export and import of Hyperion Security during upgrade

    Hi Guys,
We are upgrading Essbase, Integration Services from 7x to 9x which are utilizing Hyperion Hub and we are going to follow the method of uninstalling 7x and reinstalling 9x components.
Now my question is, what is the best way of transferring security from 7x to 9x. I heard that Advanced Security Manager can be used to export and import back security. Or is there any
    other way of doing it??
Can someone please enlighten me on this.
    Thanks in advance

Is it a slow motion video? iPhoto does not understand the slow motion tags created by some cameras, eg.g. the iPhone back camera.
