Very happy with my W520

My W520 is working flawlessly in a docking station. I have to use Throttlestop just in case to avoid any possible throttling, but apart from that precaution, it works great. i7-2820 + Quadro 2000M + 2 Vertex 3 240GB in Raid 0 + 16 GBytes of RAM. Awesome performance in a high quality package.
I give it 9 points. After they fix the small details in the BIOS with the ocassional throttling (which can now be avoided with Throttlestop), I will give it 10 points.
Great piece of hardware.

Interesting tests, mgoldshteyn. As a reference point, on my W700 w/400NIT 1920 x 1200 17" display w/dual-fluorescent backlights (and calibrated with built-in calibrator), I see all the black/white squares (the blackest black square being a challenge, but barely visible).
Of the colored screens, the only one where I see any variations at normal viewing distance is on the purple screen, and I do see the difference in "lagom" across the screen, which is probably typical for TN displays. This is all with the browser set to full-screen, to avoid having the browser interface take up any of the display area. And this is all with the brightness cranked up to max. I didn't test at any other brightness.
Just for kicks, I also ran the tests on my HTC EVO 3D Android phone (at full brightness), which has a 4.3" 960 x 540 Super-AMOLED touchscreen display. The EVO 3D screen allows you to see all of the black/white squares (the blackest black square, and whitest white square being a challenge, but still visible). And the colors are all absolutely uniform across the display. Brightness was just as good as the W700 display, but colors weren't quite as saturated, although hues appeared close to those on the W700 screen. I couldn't do the "lagom" test on the phone, because I didn't have an easy way to display that screen at native display resolution (you pinch and expand to rescale the web page on the display, but nothing indicates whether images on the page are at native resolution). The EVO 3D screen can also simultaneously display two images, using a built-in parallax barrier that channels a separate image to each eye, to show 3D images/videos without requiring special glasses (plus the phone has a built-in 3D still/video camera).
As the contrast ratio of production laptop displays go higher, which is the trend, you're going to see less and less of the black squares. People often like high contrast and brightness on TV displays, but that's not always so great on computer displays, particularly for people like myself who do image processing work. That's because you lose shadow detail, which is often important in image processing.
The issues you dislike regarding the W520's brightness settings probably have to do with the fact that, with LED-backlit displays, overall screen brightness is controlled by changing the duty cycle (instead of the intensity) of the backlight. That places a constraint on available brightness levels, because certain duty cycles, combined with the screen's refresh rate, will cause an apparent flicker in the display (which occurs mainly at lower brightness levels). And if that flicker were to occur, you would certainly complain about it, when you weren't busy vomiting or taking aspirin for your resulting headache. But the W520's display is not incredibly bright to start out with (at least according to notebookcheck.com), so most people would probably use one of the brightest settings anyway. Plus it loses additional brightness if you color-calibrate it, since the brightness of one or more color channels will then be reduced (plus people complain of oversaturation of reds with the built-in  calibrator on the displays of the W510/W520/W701, and  more advanced external calibrators have been recommended in such situations).
If you want a laptop with a better display, the best you're going to do at this time is to buy one with an IPS display:

BTW, if you like, here's another test you can run on your W520's display, just for fun.

I have an older version of Adobe Digital Editions (around 3 years old) and was very happy with it.
Then I had problems with my Kobo Reader and asked a friend who works in IT to assist. She could not fix the Kobo but she messed up my Addobe. She downloaded version three and I have an account and a password - was not able to transfer my books from my reader to version three (and I don't like the lay-out - I would prefer to stay with the old version as I also loose all my download date info..)
But all the books I have bought over the last three years are in the old Adobe Digital and I cannot access them any more. When I use it I get the message "that the document is licensed to a different account. I can't even open the books on my computer.
When I go to my Kobo library, I cannot also not open my books and get the message "this doc is protected by adobe digital rights management and is not currently authorized for use with your adobe. please sign in with your authorized adobe id and try again"
I believe the problem is that I do not seem to have a digital id for my old adobe or that the Kobo is not in sync with it anymore.
can you please help me - going on vacation in three days and cannot go without books.

Please authorize ADE 3 with same credentials that you used with older version of ADE

I'm VERY happy with the results (fast!). However, the really strange thing is this - there is now a thin yellow line, way over on the right side of the screen, which goes from top to bottom, and stays there no matter where I go or what I do. I've never seen anything like this! It was not there before I did the upgrades. Anyone out there ever heard of such a preposterous thing ~ or have any ideas on how to get rid of it?

I could nothing do, I must drop my APPLE only out.
That I maked ever 10x and all was the same... (Maveriks also 4x new updated)
I taked my Logitech-Bluetooth-Mouse from the WIN-Laptop, dropped it in USB from iMAC...and in one second I could work only with this MOUSE...I buyd the Logitech COMBO K520 and all was OK now with my lovely APPLE iMAC to work with him...But without APPLE KEYBOARD and MAGIC MOUSE...and with a 4 min. -START until now.
I  asked the EXPERTS from APPLE-SUPPORT under Tel. 0800-6645451 in Germany, became a Number, maked many Things by starting new, but the mistake after all is the same like before.
When I look into ...Apple/ Info/System/ Hardware/ Bluetooth   ..my APPLE says: NO INFOs FOUND (Es wurden keine Informationen gefunden.)
Under Hardware/ Diagnose : Selbsttest beim Einschalten: zuletzt ausgeführt: 15.05. 14, Ergebnis: Bestanden (that means OK) !!
I asked many Peaple, who sold APPLE-Computers in the STORS, but they all had no IDEA, how they can help.

  • Not very happy with warranty replacement

I am not trying to get something for nothing when I make the statement that I am not happy with the replacement touch that apple sent me for my almost out of warranty touch that completely stopped working. I am happy with the customer service, the easy return and very quick replacement. I am not completely happy with the touch that was sent to me. I can't say that is broken, it is just doggish and seems to have a really short battery life. It really seems slower then my previous touch and has seems to do odd things often, like I open a simple app (like the calendar)and it opens for a second and closes immediately or the response to touch is very slow at times. There is nothing really wrong with it but this is the 3rd own I have owned and it is by far slowest and least responsive. Does anyone have any opinion on if I have any recourse?
Also, When I put in the serial # of this replacement, which I received on the 1st of this month, Apple website tells me that the warranty has expired. I know this to be wrong because of the paperwork enclosed with the replacement said thae warranty is 90 days or remaing period, whichever longer.

Send it (or take it to an Apple store with all the relevant paperwork) and get another one.
I bought 3 Touches in the middle of January for my kids and the youngest one's was similar; slow, bad battery life, wierd backlight glitch, apps crashing. Took it to the local retail store and they replaced it with no hassle. I didn't even have my receipt. It was a 4th gen so obviously was less than a year old.
EDIT: I are a gud spellar

  • Very happy with AppleCare service...

    Hello,
This isn't a question, but after I have moaned so much about the minor issues I have had with my new MacBook, I figure it is only fair to sing the praises of AppleCare for their responses...
My white, 2Ghz MacBook has worked beautifully since I had it, but I was one of those unfortunate enough to suffer from the discolouration. It took a couple of calls to AppleCare, but they agreed to take it in for repair, and they replaced the top case - and I was only without my machine for two nights.
I was very happy about this, but my joy was short-lived. On closer inspection of my machine (and I have mentioned this on various threads...), I found that only the top case had been replaced, and not the plastic around the screen, which is made from the same plastic and was already beginning to suffer from discolouration. Moreover, during the replacement, the engineer must have been a little careless while prising off the old top case, as there was a small nick in the polycarbonate next to it. The nick was only about a millimetre and barely noticable, and it would not have bothered me too much had it not been for other issues. On top of this, the new top case was poorly fitted - it was a little warped with a millimetre gap between it and the top case in some places. I deliberated about calling AppleCare and giving up my machine again. But then, only three days after my top case replacement, the new top case started showing signs of yellow discolouration around the edges. So I called AppleCare again...
And again, they were brilliant. They took away my machine last Wednesday. By Friday, it was listed as "repair on hold - waiting for parts", but the parts obviously arrived fairly quickly as I got my machine back today. And I have to say that I am surprised at how amazing they have been. In an attempt to fix my issues, they have:
    - Replaced my (replacement) top case.
    - Replaced the screen bezel
    - And, incredibly, for that tiny nick they caused, they have completely replaced the polycarbonate bottom case.
My computer looks brand new. Apple could easily have claimed that these issues were "within spec" (which I was initially worried about), and they could easily have accused me of causing the chip in the polycarbonate. Instead, they just replaced the lot.
Now, I'm not 100% confident that my new top case or screen bezel won't start to discolour again. The last replacement top case started to discolour very quickly, and it seems that although Apple are trying to address the issue, they haven't got to the bottom of it yet. But I do have confidence in AppleCare and that they will do everything they can to fix my problems. Now that I know it's worth it, I am about to invest in the two-year extended AppleCare warranty.
Just wanted to share this positive experience (in part to prove that I'm not a troll just here to moan ).
    All the best,
    Keith

    Hi Keith...
    Greetings from across the pond.
Great story--I'm glad to hear everything worked out for you.
Personally, at least here in the 'states, I've never <knock/on/wood> had any problems working w/ Apple or AppleCare directly.
I've found the customer service at AppleCare to be, above all, polite.

  • Very Happy With New FireWire Interface

I went to Guitar Center tonight to buy my son something for his punk band (he's the lead guitarist, singer and songwriter). I ended up buying him an amp modeling stomp box with lots of different kinds of sounds and settings (three pedals plus an expression pedal).
While I was there, I was looking at FireWire interfaces for my new MBP, which will replace my G5. They had an M-Audio Firewire Solo, which normally retails for $199. They had a return, and were asking $110. I got it for $100. Brought it home, set it up, and it works really well. And no more chirps from the G5. I went ahead and routed the audio cables through a ground loop isolator (I used two for the G5), which also converts unbalanced audio cables to balanced, so I could save the $40 they wanted for a pair of those (yes, $40).
I am very happy right now. I was working on an ambient-ocean themed song before pulling the G5. Tonight, I have already added a voiceover track using the phantom-powered mic input, and added a mix of sounds from my old Roland and Korg synth rack modules. Very cool. Very happy.

I have to agree with you. We got the G4 last week and to date (touch wood) there were no problems with our packages, switching over or any other problems. It was really smooth and the G4 box is fast quick and works really well. A good bit of kit that the family really like.

  • Hello – I am very happy with the present version of Firefox - do I "HAVE" to Update or can I keep it as it is, which I prefer to do?? Kind regards – Dave Wyatt

I have heard that some people have lost information or are not happy with the new version - I am only a casual user and happy with the way it is now and would like to keep it the same - can I do that??

Firefox menu > Options. In Options, click Advanced tab. UNDER Advanced Tab, click the Update tab. Under "Automatically check for updates to", un-check Firefox. Under "When updates to Firefox are found", select Ask me what I want to do.
This will make sure neither Firefox updates automatically nor does it prompt to update.
But one thing Firefox 5 is unsupported. That means you would not get any security fixes for any vulnerabilities in Firefox 5.

  • Very happy with my HP Stream 11.6 Laptop

Now I know it's not for gaming but I want to say that I previously owned a competitor laptop that had a Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a Nvidia Graphics card.
While this laptop has only a 32GB SSD , I plugged in a 320GB External HDD and It plays older games like a champ! I like the cool blue color and that it runs cool.
One drawback: I have to disable Fast Shutdown otherwise it takes forever to shut down. But the laptop is not defective it's just that a small HDD like that can't take much of what 8.1 has to offer.
Overall I'm happy with my purchase for $199. It came with 1 year of free Office 365 and a $25 Windows Store gift card offer, and Geek Squad gave me 6 months of Trend Micro for 3 computers. Was a great deal for $199.

Windows loads really fast. But you have to tweak the operating system some to get full usability. You need to install as many programs to an external drive as you can otherwise you run the risk of running out of HDD space for Windows to run around on.
Windows 8.1 with Bing is pretty light on system resources and the 2GB of Ram handles all the games on Steam that I bought with the exception of some that is looking for 512mb of Vram with 2GB system ram.
You also have to disable Fast Shutdown , System Protection and Windows Updates to be able to have a speedy OS.
Skype and Steam and Trillian are all loaded to the D drive (External HDD)
Don't like the fact there are only 2 USB ports but on the plus side once I get enough $$$$$$ I could go the Bluetooth route and pair a PS3 controller with a USB mouse together and free up some ports that previously I could have used.
It's a strange situation for a person like me but I'm working around these limitations quite nicely.

  • I am very happy with the Dynex Brand :)

Ever since I got my Dynex 16" LED TV awhile back to replace a failing 27" CRT I have been extremely happy with it. I never adjust the color or the sound settings, it just looked awesome picture wise when I have taken it out of the box. I am happy to say that it has substantially saved on our electric bill when it comes in at the end of the month. I like to keep my TV on overnight and no problems.
Don't know how Best Buy does it but I trust the Dynex brand not only for high quality but for high reliability standards too.

    Hello hockeycanuckjc,
Thank you for the great feedback. We’re glad to hear that you are pleased with the color quality of the unit and the volume level. I personally have a Dynex LCD TV, and my family and I have enjoyed it for a few years now without any problems. Here at Best Buy, we work hard to deliver dependable and affordable electronics, and always appreciate feedback from our customers when they feel we’ve succeeded.
