Very strange bugs - Unexpected end-of-file - LR database problem

I really like the concept and GUI of LR, but bugfixing is urgently needed. Of course I am not happy that I spent money for the current quality of software (Windows version).
Before the problem described below occured I performed some develop actions on several images without any problems.
After doing some simple cropping in the Develop module of LR the display for one single image became brown (in loupe and film strip). The problem is singular for one image.
Then I restarted LR.
Now LR displayed a message saying "Unexpected end-of-file" at top inside the image display. (Has anybody out there ever seen this?)
That message is obviously misleading: The image NEF-file is untouched. The xmp sidecar is new of course. Apparently the database entry is broken!!!
Deleting the xmp sidecar doesn't solve the problem.
Then I told LR to remove the faulty image from the LR database without physically deleting it.
Then I checked database consistency without any problem report.
Then I tried to reconnect the image for that folder.
The image is not reconnected. It doesn't show up in LR.
Then I copied the image outside LR to a new folder and told LR to import the new folder.
The image was not imported by LR. LR is saying it is a duplicate. Obviously it is not removed correctly from the LR database even I told LR to remove it.
After some attempts (sorry I don't remember exactly) I could redisplay the problem image. Now the image is displayed correctly again. But LR is saying in a dialog box that I will be unable to make changes to that image. The grid display has a triangular exclamation sign (not a rectangular one!!!).
Later I told LR to delete (not only remove) the image physically.
Afterwards I copied the image into the OS folder.
Afterwards I was able to reconnect the missing image to the LR folder.
Afterwards I could continue working with the develop module at that image.
BUG 1) Why could this problem occur at all? ("Unexpected end-of-file")
BUG 2) Obviously the image has not been correctly removed from the LR database although I told LR to do this.
No, my disks are not full.

  • Very strange bug when importing ICS files

Hiyas.. I have two ICS files, one for calendar entries during november, one for entries during december. According to all I can see, both files only contain entries for the corresponding month.
Now.. when I import them into a calendar, I import November. Works fine. Now I import December. Works fine too for december, but it deletes entries in November. So I imort november again. Now I have all entries for november, but it deletes entries (not all, just some) in December.
From all I can see, the ICS files are correct. I really don't get it. Is this some kind of an unknown bu in iCal?
The files can be downloaded from
    http://www.misteli.ch/november2008.xls.ics
    http://www.misteli.ch/december2008.xls.ics
since I cannot attach them to this posting.
Does anyone have a clue about whats going on here?
    Thanks in advance
    Rog

That might work, but the problem is, this is my girlfriend's working calendar and I want to publish it to MobileMe, so both me and her have it. Okay, I could use two separate calendars and publish them both, but that would be quiet a bit clumsy. If this is the only way it works, I can do it I guess. I just wondered if this wasn't rather an iCal Bug that needs to be fixed in the next version or if I did something completely wrong there.
You see.. her calendar comes in the form of an Excel file. I wrote some code to parse the XLS file, read the information from that file and create an ICS file that I can import into iCal. The idea was to use an autoamted task for that, but I didn't continue that path yet. So, it was perfectly understandble if I created crap in the ICS files, but from all I can see when I open it with TextWrangler, the ICS files are up to spec and correct.
    Thanks anyway though!

  • CR 6.7 gives "unexpected end of file in clipboard" error

When I first installed CR67 RC1 it worked fine.  After restarting Photoshop and Bridge, I then got an "unexpected end of file encountered" popup whenever Photoshop CS5.1 tried to open a file.  Bridge seemed to work fine, though.  Very strange.
I then logged into another account on the same machine and CR67 and Photoshop worked fine.  After logging out of the first account and logging back in, CR67 RC1 started working fine in this original account that I had been using.  Plus, as a bonus, CR67 RC1 no longer displays the initial popup about how this is an RC.
Overall, I wish I could uninstall CR67 RC1, anyone know how?

This has been answered lots of times recently. I don't know a link offhand, but it'll be there, if you search for it.

  • Oraclejsp unexpected end of file error

I am getting an OracleJsp Unexpected End of File error when I use the <logic:present name="add"> <html:form action="myAction" /> </logic:present> tag. "add" is referring to something that was set in a struts action (ie: request.setAttribute("add", "present")). I've even tried a scriplet that checks request.setAttribute and I get the same error. Any ideas? Thanks.

Often, file headers get smurfed. Photoshop is very critical of these headers.
JPEG's seem to be very sensitive to these errors. My trick is to open in a more liberal program, like ThumbsPlus, IrfanView, or PhotoImpact, and then just do a Save, keeping the JPEG compression levels low. This nearly always clears things up for PS.
    Good luck,

  • "unexpected end of file" error on files after import.

recently i have been getting errors on import to lightroom,  some times its colored dots or lines,  some times the image looks fine but shows "unexpected end of file" or "lightroom has encountered an error reading file".
I have been trying to rule things out like cards by switching camera cards ect.   If the file comes up bad i will delete it from disk and re-insert the sd card find the file and drag it to the folder on my drive and re import.   so far this fixes it every time proving the the camera and card are fine, somewhere in the import process its going bad.
any suggestions on some more troubleshooting.?

  • Unexpected End of File error in LR 1.3

Using the computer's built-in SD card reader, I imported NEF files taken on my Nikon D80. The previews showed up in the Library window of LR, but when I tried to open the files in Loupe view, I received an "Unexpected End of File" error on most of the images.
Thinking it might be a card issue, I took some test shots using JPG format instead of NEF, and all images imported and opened properly.
I then took some other photos in NEF format, imported them thru the card reader, and none of the new files would open in loupe view. I deleted all the files from the computer and library, and tried the following.
I then hooked the camera directly to the computer's USB port and imported the problem NEF files from the camera (SD card in the camera). Everything worked fine -- all the NEF files opened properly.
Not being a technical type, I don't know if this is a software or hardware issue -- does anybody have a clue?
I have used this card before and have used the card reader to inport RAW files from a different camera (Panasonic LUMIX) with no problem.
I hesitate to use RAW format on my Nikon D80 until I can figure out what the problem is.

I believe the problem is related to Edit > Catalog Settings... > Metadata > EXIF > Write date or time changes into proprietary raw files.  If this is selected and you change the capture time on your images then around 1 in 256 photos will become corrupted.  The problem is one in 256 files will end with character 26 (or character 1A in Hex).  When updating the files Lightroom removes the trailing character 26.  First of all turn off this switch.  Secondly if you don't have a good original copy you can download and use HEdit to append the trailing character 26 to your file.
I first posted this problem in September 2007 on the forum.  It is still an issue in the 3.2 RC.  I have reported the bug through adobe labs (correct channel rather than this forum) and they are looking into the problem.

  • Major problem with Photoshop unexpected end of file...

Every time I save a file in Photoshop, I have to save it twice per format (psd, jpg, etc...).  That's because if I've ever saved the file before, I get an unexpected end of file error and the file disappears until I do a save as.  I downloaded the latest update today and it claimed to have fixed major errors with Photoshop.  I wonder what major errors exactly were fixed; and why not this one?  As far as errors go, it's pretty effing major.  It adds significant time to all of my projects and frankly, if I'm spending exorbitant amounts of money for "industry-leading" software, I expect to be able to save my work painlessly.  Oh well, I guess it'll only be another couple months before I have to shell out another $1200 bucks for the CS6 right?  Maybe then I'll be able to actually save my work.
p.s. CS2/3/4 did not have this issue - sweet upgrade Adobe, thanks.

Again, this is not a known issue.   You are the first person to bring this up without a bad disk drive, and it is probably due to something on your file server.
Yes, other people get the same error message - because they are dealing with corrupt files for one reason or another.  You are getting the message because the files are corrupt, probably because of an issue with your file server.
Photoshop CS4 and earlier used the Carbon framework on MacOS.  Photoshop CS5 is written to the Cocoa framework/APIs and uses different OS code paths for many things.  We have seen many cases where the Cocoa APIs had problems that the Carbon APIs did not.  Unfortunately, if we cannot work around those API issues, then they are up to Apple to fix.
But in this case, I doubt it is an OS API bug as such.  I suspect it is a change in the way the OS APIs interact with the file server.
And cases like this are high up on the list of why we say NOT to open or save from a file server -- you can get a lot of odd, difficult to diagnose errors because of problems on the server or network.  Those problems have nothing to do with the application, but may appear to because of the complexity of file servers and networking.
Some Photoshop users do open and save off a file server all the time - without problems.  When we test with file servers here inside Adobe, we rarely have problems (and the rare problem was due to a bad disk on the server).  But we can't guarantee that everyone's network and everyone's file server is going to work perfectly - and evidence suggests that many of them don't work perfectly.
In short: you probably have a bad file server.  It is highly unlikely that this is a bug in Photoshop.

  • Adobe CS2 unexpected end-of-file was encountered

We have imaqge preview saving turned of but are still getting unexpected end-of-file was encountered errors when saving eps files. Saving the eps file to an new folder saves corerectly.

The reason for asking about the details has to do with a possible bug in XSan 1.2 which seem to be hitting Helios / Xinet and possibly also Apple's own AFP implementation.
Symptoms seem to be coherent (although 3 different products are used.
Here is post from the xsan-users mailing list
    Otto,
There appear to be some semi-known issues that have come up when using Xinet's FullPress with Xsan as well. Files disappearing, becoming corrupt, reverting to earlier versions... Finder windows showing multiple versions of the same file, even though the shell only shows one... etc, etc, etc.
I can't tell you a whole lot about it as of yet, but the problem seems to be related to issues with files' i-node numbers. If you do a "ls -il" on the directory which contains your "missing" files and folders, often they will reappear. ??? Additionally you may notice that the i-node numbers change (they are the first numbers in the resulting list) with every execution of the "ls -il" command.
I was told by someone that it is some sort of "caching problem", although I don't know what that means exactly or how that would affect what we are seeing happen. Early indications seem to look like problems are more likely to occur when users are accessing the same files over again, at different times throughout the day, from different machines (ie. X user worked on X job in the AM on X Mac, and in the afternoon Y user worked on X job in the PM on Y Mac).
I wish I could tell you more, but I'm still in the early stages of tracking this one down!
    Good luck,
    Dustin Tantum
And here is a tech note from helios:
    HELIOS TechInfo #095en01
    ========================
    Tue, 24 Jan 2006
Data corruption using Apple XSan 1.2
Recently we received feedback from HELIOS partners and customers that
clients connected to HELIOS servers using Apple XSan 1.2 file systems
showed indications of intermittent data corruption.
Symptoms are that files can not be opened after Save, or show partial
old content. Among the affected applications are Adobe Photoshop,
    InDesign, and Quark XPress.
Another symptom are system messages from the "desksrv" process, like
"node does not belong to index" which indicate corrupted database
    contents.
From a "ktrace" dump of a "pcshare" process a partner could provide,
it became clear that contents of a data file were written correctly by
HELIOS. But after the application from the same SMB client did close,
reopen and then read the content in again, this was in part the old
    content of the file.
As these problems may not be recognized by users every time they
occur, it would be safest not to use XSan 1.2 as a file system.
HELIOS has reported this to Apple who is currently investigating this
    issue.
We recommend that every customer who encounters this Xsan data
corruption problem reports this bug to Apple.
When a workaround or fix is available, this information will be
distributed by a follow up to this TechInfo.
So XSan 1.2 and doing file sharing doesn't seem to cooperate well for now

    Welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately for you, posting only about things not working isn't going to net you assistance or answers - at most you can get sympathy but there isn't too much of that to share with everyone. You should find a forum for the particular product that is not working. If you have a problem with Glassfish, then try the Glassfish forum.

Check your scratch disks for fragmentation ( use something like disk warrior ) and available space.  Sounds like the files are not getting completely saved.
