Video playback on slow CPUs (like Atom)

What is the highest quality video that can be played back in real time on an Atom 230 or 330 entirely in software (i.e., without offloading any to the GPU like with VDPAU or similar)?
Put another way, what is the wimpiest (slowest, cheapest?) CPU that can decode 1080p H.264 in real time?
Basically, I'm trying to determine the viability of using one of the common "nettop" boxes with a 64-bit Atom and the crappy Intel 945GC chipset as a primary desktop. My most demanding usage watching an occasional fansub, usually in not-so-good quality. It'd be a shame to not be able to take advantage of such cheap, power-efficient hardware.

I do have Arch installed on D945GCLF2 with Atom 330 and so far it play 1080p video files without a problem using coreavc codec and mplayer from windows. There are few threads about how to compile mplayer with coreacv support at forums already. It's preety painfull for CPU, using all 4 (including HT) cores at around 60% but works. The only problem i have is with flash, for both low-quality and hd videos if i use full-screen mode (which scales it to 1920x1200), can't get over it so far.
Another solution would be to find some cheap nVidia PCI graphic card with VDPAU support, but my case is too small to even try that ;-)

  • Re: Satelite M70 - Video playback really slow and dtrange metalic noise

    Hi
I have a Satelite M70 laptop and a few days now I realise that the video (youtube and any sort of videos) playback speed is really slow, slow motion (my interenet speed is fine)
and there is a really creepy kind metal noise when the video is playing.... u cant hear anything just that noise.
Also when i open a file or a menu in windows u get theis king of metalic noise
I have checked the video and audio codecs and are the latest
btw: I can hear audio files from media player just fine. It seems this happens only with videos
Any suggestions cause i cant see any videos!!!!!

I was 100% sure you will post this.
Online playback speed is always different. I have fastest 16000 DSL line and I have noticed the same on my M70 and brand new Satellite P300. Sometimes is youtube or some livestream video perfect and sometimes audio and video don't match together or the video playback is like in slow-motion.
I have also latest drivers and codecs preinstalled on both machines. There is one interesting thing-this slow-motion happen when the HDD led is blinking and when the HDD is running. Please play a little bit with this stuff and watch carefully how it works.
About sound and speakers is not easy to say if they are defective or not. The fact is that sound on headphones works perfectly is evidence that sound card or sound driver is not the problem.
I really don't know what to say but I believe the speakers don't work properly.
    What do you think?

  • HP 620 Win 8 64bit - Please fix this HP! No sound and audio/video playback on slow motion

Please offer native audio drivers for HP 620 Windows 8 64 bit.
    Problems:
    - There is no working audio driver for HP 620 win 8 64 bit (Celeron Intel)
    - Both audio and video playback is on slow motion (speed is like 1 sec is 3 secs).
I want to use 64 bit version so please do not suggest to do any downgrades.

  • Video playback very slow/failing with both iGPU and dGPU enabled simultaneously

Until a couple of months ago, my PC was running with an i5 760 and my current Radeon HD 7850 on Premiere Elements 11 just fine - playback was smooth and I could edit my videos just fine.
However, recently I installed a new CPU and motherboard - an i7 4770K. The key feature here is that it has an integrated GPU (hence referred to as "iGPU") which can run in tandem with my current dGPU (discrete GPU, the HD 7850) by having encoding jobs such as rendering videos and transcoding sent to the iGPU in a feature called Quick Sync. In order to utilise this, I had to bind a virtual monitor to my motherboard's VGA port (as according to this post made by vaesauce on the OBS forums), and for all related applications it worked perfectly (HandBrake transcodes really quickly, and I can stream with OBS with negligible performance overhead). Except one - Premiere Elements 11.
When I booted up Premiere Elements 11 to edit a short clip yesterday, I was greeted with a screen that informed me I had incompatible drivers. I went and checked my video drivers for both of my GPUs - both up to date - reinstalled them and rebooted. Tried once again, same issue. Going on to try and edit just resulted in audio playback, and a complete failure of video playback. I found the solution was to disable my iGPU in device manager, then it works fine.
Now, here is my question - how can I have both the dGPU and iGPU enabled and still be able to edit videos with Premiere Elements 11? While it does work in this fashion, the constant going into device manager before and after editing a video is very annoying (also, I'm sure PrEl 11 could itself benefit from the QuickSync!)

Don't disable the Intel GPU. Causes more problems then it fixes. Here's your solution believe it or not. Go to download.com and find the K-Lite Codec Pack_Full and install. It seems that the new updates have been messing peoples system's ability to read Codecs. This fixed my problem and I've been searching all day every day for over a week now.

  • AVI video playback too slow

I have been working on a large project that includes about
    100 video files.
I've been able to complete this project, thanks to the help
of many people from this forum.
I finally burned the project onto a DVD yesterday, and
    everything worked properly.
However, on the pages that included video files, there was a
noticeable wait when the videos were loading.
All the video is in AVI format and was imported to Quicktime
    in the project.
I know that playback from a cd or dvd is usually slower, but
I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to attempt to speed up
    this process.
    Any input will be helpful.

Best thing to do is check what data rate the videos are.
Compare that to the speed of the drive you are playing back on.
Also make sure the video files are in the root directory, or in a
folder not too deep so that your application doesn't have to search
for them for too long. If you are playing back on Windows machines
only, it might be worth importing as AVI rather than QuickTime to
    make it a bit smoother.
Also have a look at the video cast member options inside
director - uncheck any that say "preload" or similar and check any
    that say "streaming" or similar.
Hope that helps. The bottom line is that the smaller the
filesize and data rate of the video, the faster it will run. If you
practice with some video software, you will be able to reduce both
of these whilst retaining video quality - but be carefull not to
use a codec that is not available on your playback machine(s).

  • Video playback to slow in published scorm packages

Hi I have created a sample e-learning course in captivate 8. Its has few content slides, one video size (usinf mp4 format size 9 mb)  and a quiz at the end. The video plays fins when previewing. However when I publish the same course into SCORM 1.2 format and plays from the LMS it takes very long time to play the video.
The video setting I have used in the project are as follows
Video type : Progressive download video
    Skin : No skin
and I selected an "Event video" type
Does anyone having similar issues with videos? If yes, Did you manage to fix it
    Can anyone please help.
    Many Thanks
    Ganesh

Exact same problem. Tried Quick Time as well, doesn't help. The CPU is killed at 100% all throughout playback. I noticed the file size is DOUBLE what it used to be before I was forced to upgrade. Now I can't watch anything....I live in Ireland but was watching Lost and Project Runway on itunes. No longer. *****. The ONLY thing that made it possible to see most of the show (was trying it on PR Black and White episode) was to watch the movie at the LOWEST playback setting, 1/2 time. This is NO way to go forward. I was just desparate to see who won. But that's my last download until this gets fixed.

  • Video playback slow and audio drop out after render

This happens with AVI or Quicktime files.

It sounds like you might be hitting the space bar in hopes of getting real time playback.  Sorry, but AE doesn't work like that, because it does totally different things from an editing application like Premiere.
And if you've downloaded the tryout version, you really ought to learn how AE works... and a short description is "it doesn't work intuitively".  You can frustrate yourself in a hurry.
    But this can really help;

  • Flash 10 and PPC - slow video playback

Have an old PowerBook 12" running 10.5. Since upgrading to
Flash v10 the video playback is slow and sluggish to the point
Flash content is unusable. Tried to download a PPC specific version
but Adobe downloads gave me the Universal Binary once again. I
suspect v10 is buggy and is not supporting "Enable Hardware
Acceleration" on PPC so video is being scaled and processed by
    software.
Anyone else having this problem? Anyone able to direct me to
    good old v9?

Restarting might help temporarily, but for a more permanent solution you'd need a faster computer processor, a better video card, lots more RAM, and a faster hard drive. The sad truth of the matter is that technology advances so quickly that older computer hardware can't keep up with it. It would actually cost less to buy a new computer than it would to try to upgrade an older model. The iMac CRT's are still useful for many tasks, but they can't be expected to handle present-day multimedia.

  • Higher volume for video playback?

    Hello everyone!
I am new to the boards and to the touchpad.  I have a question about adjusting the volume in video playback.  I woudl like to know while during the conversion process, are there any converters out there that can boost the volume?  I have been playing with Movavi, AVS, and Cucusoft.  I am converting an AVI to MPEG-4 or Ipad format, whichever is on the menu.  When I transfer the converted file, the video looks great and the audio plays back.  However, the volume to me is not high enough.  I have also used my headphones and it still does not play as loud as my iphone 4 and they are basically the same file and format.  I bought this because of the price and I am going on vacation later this year and I want to use it on the plane so that is why I am having the volume issue.  To me it seems it wont be loud enough on the plane.   Is there anything I am missing?  I have also tried to upgrade to the latest OS version but the TP is always coming back with the unable to connect message.  I am still working on that.  I cant get the web doctor to work but that is another thread.
    Thanks very much
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

Ok, I think I have mastered how to convert my movies to play on the TP with no issues.  However, I need to somehow increase the volume level of the converted movie.  I have already installed the preware option that increases the internal volume levels, but some of the movies I have converted seem a little low for my taste.  I have been trying trial versions of several video converters such as DVD fab, Xilisoft, Cucusoft and others but I like Handbrake's track record and it's free!
What I would like to know is if there is a volume setting in Handbrake?  If not does anyone know a way to increase the volume levels when you convert movies any other way?
    Thanks very much.

  • Video playback lagging while buffering

Having a problem with video in my iPad app. The video is loaded from a server into an FLVPlayback component. While the video is buffering, the video playback is extremely choppy (like 1-2 FPS), but as soon as the buffering is complete, it plays smoothly. So obviously, the buffering itself uses too many resources (I've tested both on an iPad Mini and an ancient iPad 1).
Is there any way to reduce the resource usage of the buffering process so I can start playing before buffering is complete? YouTube is able to buffer while playing the same devices, so it should be possible. The videos are pretty low quality and around 70mb, and the bufferTime is default, not that that should make a difference.

But that's not the problem. The problem is that I cannot play the video smoothly while buffering is going on. It doesn't matter how much has actually buffered. It's as if the iPad's CPU is too bogged down by the buffering to play video at the same time, but I don't understand why, since YouTube and other apps (not made by me) are obviously able to do it on the same iPads.

  • Video Playback Issue due to vibration/jostling

    Hi,
Has anyone ever experienced video playback skipping, slowing down, or stopping when the machine is moved, jostled, or experiences some minor bumps and vibration (for example: watching a movie on a bus or train)?
I have experienced this repeatedly and at first thought it was somehow due to the loose fit of the battery however the issue continued following the removal of the battery. Could this then be attributed to, perhaps, the hard disk drive?
This issue is occuring on a W530 with the 500GB standard HDD and the K1000M.
Thank you in advance for your help,
    DG

  • Slow video playback in Photoshop Elements 11

Playback of videos directly in Photoshop Elements Organizer is very slow. Video is stuttering.
Playing the same video outside of PSE11 with Windows Media Player is much better. Video plays without any stuttering.
Looks like the internal video player of PSE11 is very poor and provides slow performance.
What can I do do have the same video performance with the PSE11 player as I have with WMP.
I use Windows 7 64 Bit (8 GB RAM) with a Intel Core i3 (2330). This CPU has enough power to playback HD or Full-HD videos without any stuttering!!!
Why can't the internal play of PSE11 Organizer play my videos without stuttering - like WMP 12.0.7601.18150 does?
    Regards,
    Dodson65

The videos I use are created with different devices.
I have HD videos taken with a Pentax DSLR and I have Full-HD videos taken with a Windows Phone 8 device.
Both playback on my Laptop without any stottering with different software. I checked WMP and VLC. Even when using my Laptop with energy-saving profile these videos can be played without stottering.
When I playback the videos in PSE11 Organizer I don't want to edit them - just playback. So why should the internal player behave different? I agree with you - this might be different when I playback the videos in Premiere Elements 11 (as this is a video editing software). But when using Photoshop Elements 11 I want to be able to playback videos in the same performance as I can do with WMP or VLC. If Photoshop Elements 11 can't do that - why? The organizer of PSE11 is not an editor. It should be able to playback videos the same way (with the same performance) as other players on my laptop.
Can you please explain this sentence: "Have you started a Premiere Elements project yet that uses this video's specs? This will often trigger Premiere Elements to download the necessary components for interpretting the video." Is there anything I can do to improve video playback performance?

Can you say even more about what it is you want to do? I mean, what will the application do, not what are the technical aspects of how it will work?
For a point of comparison, look at this thing I did:
    http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/mixit/
If you try out the Make page, both the template ones and the from scratch one, as well as the View page to see the playback unit in action. Is what you're going to do anything like that?
I have tried the playback part of this as a mobile app, and it so very nearly works ok! Amongst the many problems are that the overall data rate needed is quite high, and mobile devices aren't as consistant or high bandwidth as desktops, the external swfs often need code in them, so that rules out iOS, and to do the layering involved rules out H.264.
At some future time there will hopefully be StageVideo that can use H.264, but I don't know when that will be, or whether it will be responsive enough (FLV is much faster to connect to and play than H.264).
Incidentally, even in the Objective-C world you can't lay things on top of the standard iOS H.264 player. To do that you have to use the AV Foundation class, so it's fairly low level programming. Using FLV in Flash is a lot easier!

  • ITunes 11 HD video playback slow/choppy/stutter/skipping in OSX

    Hi guys,
I'm running iTunes 11.0.1 in OS 10.8.2 on my 2.66 GHzm, 8 GB RAM MacBook Pro and playback in HD (1080p) movies/TV shows in iTunes is slow, choppy, stuttering and skipping. Can't seem to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I was having this same problem, and found one cause.
I have an extensive library on a Drobo FS.  None of the AppleTV's in the house have any problem streaming full 1080p from it, but my new iMac does.  Choppy / laggy video play.  Movies and TV shows right from the iTunes store.  I can have 3 TV's streaming, and even a 4th laptop, all streaming from the iMac iTunes using the Drobo.  They all have zero issues.  No lag, no choppy, nothing.  iMac has the issue even when nothing else is running.  Every time.
BTW, it's happend on my old iMac and the brand new one, both with iTunes 11.
I was told to try setting up a second account on my iMac, and try playing video there.  It worked.  No problems at all.  Weird.
So I started looking at differences between the new account, and my standard.  I'd already made sure nothing unusual was running, and no processor hogs (not that anything short of Handbrake at full settings has come close to pegging out the processers on the new box).  I found one thing, that made a difference.  I had Timemachine backups, going to the same Drobo FS (though a different partition) turned on on the iMac.
Timemachine was running the whole time, and didn't impact any other streaming from the same machine, but it did make iTunes video playback of 1080p movies skip like my 6 year old daughter on the iMac.  I turned it off.... no more skipping.  I've watched 5 TV shows and 2 movies on that account, and not had another single incident.
Obviously, there is still a problem.  The iMac and Drobo have enough bandwidth that they can do all the work at the same time (or I'd be seeing the problem on the other devices while streaming), but they are not playing well together on the same account.  I've also checked the throughput to the Drobo FS from the iMac... way more than necessary.  If it were a read / write thing on the Drobo, then I'd expect other devices to see the issue when I'm watching something on the iMac that is skipping, but there was still no skipping on any other device at that same time...
But, as I said, I found the root cause in my case.  I can turn off Timemachine backups while I'm watching a movie on the iMac, or I can move where I write the Timemachine backups to (going to try this over the weekend to be sure it works).  If moving the Timemachine backup to a different drive doesn't work, it's a bigger problem.
I'd really love to see Apple fix this and the issue where I have to turn iTunes on in 32bit mode when using an external library (of it gives the funky quicktime error until you delete and readd the movie).
Hope this helps some of you, if not all.
