Video Raid drive not mounting

All of a sudden our Video Raid drive will not mount. I turn on the drive, let it warm up for 30 seconds or so then power up the computer and it has always mounted. BUT now nothing. I've tried restarting several times.
The drive is a HUGE systems 2.3TB Video RAID U320.
It shows up in disk utility but the two "RAID slices" say offline.
Any advice or comments?
(I tried reading through the past posts but did not see anything that was helpful in regards to this type of drive)
Using: Final Cut Pro 5.1.1
Thanks!

If your RAID is down and you do not have a backup, you have a problem. I have one piece of discouraging advice:
Gather your crew and discuss your worst case project recovery scenario. If HUGE can fix it for you, then you will have the cozy satisfaction of knowing you have a plan in place.
Start tonight.

  • External SCSI RAID drives not mounting

I have an ATTO UL3D RAID that was working fine and I updated to the recommended 10.3.9 Apple update and now my drives are not mounting on the desktop. They show up in Disk Utility and I can initialize them, but I have some important data that I want to rescue. I followed all of the suggestions from ATTO but nothing. Can anyone please help? Thanks.
    G5 Dual 1.8   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Mine take a very very long time to mount then they will not sleep even when unmounted.  The firewire driver in Mavericks needs some work.  If at all possible, I would use USB until the driver get's resolved.

  • Mac Mini and WD My Book Duo RAID drives not mounting?

I have two of these My Book Duo drives connected via USB to my Mac Mini (late 2012), running OSX 10.9.5.
The drives are both configured as RAID 1, one has my iTunes and other media, the second one is the Time Machine backup disk. Last night when I restarted my computer neither drive mounted. I got an OSX error "THe disk is not readable" and a WD error "RAID stripe set has failed" box.
When I open the WD drive utilities I can't run any of the Diagnostics and the RAID Management tab says "RAID Status: Unknown" and suggests that I re-configure the drives.
I don't want to do that, obviously, as there is a total of over 3TB of data on both drives! It's suspicious that BOTH drives failed to mount at the same time... sounds like some software problem perhaps? I am posting here because it might be an OSX or local software problem?
I have updated the firmware on both drives and power-cycled them, restarted the computer several times, the usual things, but no luck.  On a whim I tried updating the firmware a second time and got a different error in the firmware updater: "The drive is locked."
Any thoughts on what I could try?  I've opened a Support Case with WD but oftentimes other users can be even more helpful!  ;-)
    Thanks, David

Hi, Thank you for the reply but I am definitely exactly one of those more Enterprise customers and my point is that your implementation is flawed and should be fixed because of course one of the reasons I bought the WD My Book Duo is because of encryption, but I want to own my encryption key and be able to decrypt my own data not have it hijacked. So I'm a little bit confused by your answer, is the official WD response that it acknowledges the worrysome problems I outlined but that there will be no plan to fix these issues? I am an IT consultant myself making recommendations for clients especially dealing with security. How can I recommend to "anyone" to use a product that seems to not care about preventing unnecessary data loss. It is not impossible nor even difficult for WD to fix this problem, to allow customers to access their own data off of their hard drives in case their "drive enclosure" develops problems or 'dies'. As I have already outlined, there are at least two ways or more that WD can fix this: 1. Allow enabling or disabling of the Encryption.And/OR2. Allow Exporting/Saving of the Encryption Key which we can then use with software to decrypt our hard drives in case of problems arising with our drive enclosure. Ideally the solution should include method #2 listed above so that we can enjoy the Encryption feature for which we purchased your products with assurance that we will NOT be locked out of our data for no good reason. I hope WD will consider taking a close look at this issue since it may at some point find itself with a lot of very angry customers when their WD My Book duos or other similar encrypted "drive enclosures" fail and people end up with perfectly functioning hard drives with data on them that they won't be able to access. Looking forward to a solution.

Apple Xserver Raid, 1 raid mounts and the other raid does not mount but all the lights on the drives are green

Kind of lacking in detail there...
Did the other volume mount in the past? and it stopped working? When? What changed?
What does Raid Admin.app have to say about it?
Does it see the drives? a RAID set on those drives? A link on the fiber channel connection?

  • 10.4.7 & FireWire drives not mounting

    Hi everyone,
since this morning my trusted LaCie FW HDs won't mount, are not seen in System Profiler and Disk Utility.
I tried almost every thing I could find, resetting vram, pram, powering everything down, waiting, disconnecting all the cables, powering back up, connecting one after another, etc. - no changes.
Every application runs fine. Except, of course, Logic because I have all my sounds and song projects on these drives.
My system.log continues to say every second again:
...-Computer kernel[0]: AppleFWOHCI_AsyncTransmit::waitForDMA - context not going inactive.
    The console.log repeats:
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] attempt to make FSSpec for "121-210.cypress" failed -120\n
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] attempt to make FSSpec for "210.cypress" failed -120\n
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] found no firmware to load for 210\n
Does anybody know what these logs mean?
Is anybody else having this problem with 10.4.7?
I started a similar thread on A-S-D- Installation and Setup, only to find out, that a lot of people there are experiencing the same issue (FW drives not mounting, not showing).
    Would resetting the PMU help?
    Please help, I can't work

Back from the mysterious world of HDs, so easy to solve..., sometimes...
I tried the HDs on my friends older PB and all was fine.
Resetting my computers PMU did not solve the problem, after I tried everything else.
    I refrained from reinstalling 10.4.7.
All other applications (but Logic, because I could not access my files) were running smooth.
Going back to 10 a.m. yesterday, basically starting over, there was one thing I missed checking (being human): the AC to DC converters supplied by LaCie for their drives.
See, they are under my desk, like out of sight...
Voilá! Individual testing revealed, that the AC/DC converter for the first LaCie drive in my chain did not spin up any of my other six LaCie drives, which I never run all at the same time, but they still have their own power supply.
Changed power supply on the first HD and now I am back to the fast speed and glitch free system I love. Back to enjoying work as well
What a day. And I am very sorry, that I was implying to blame 10.4.7 for this. My PB has never been faster

  • SOLUTION - USB 3.0 External Drives Not Mounting on MBP Retinas - SOLUTION

So I have been having the same problem as everyone else who has issues with USB 3 external hard drives not mounting on their MBP Retinas. My friend told me to try unplugging the USB cord and plugging it back in instantly (like in half a second, so as to not let the power turn off on the drive).  I had my doubts but then I tried it just now, and MY DRIVE MOUNTED.
GO TRY IT AND SEE IF IT WORKS FOR YOU!
UPDATE: I am using a powered external drive (Seagate Backup Pro 3TB).  Not sure if this will work with bus powered drives, but I think it might, as my friend might have been using a bus powered drive.
Also, I just bought two Hitachi TOURO 750GB bus powered portable drives (7200rpm/USB 3.0) and they mounted perfectly without problem as soon as I plugged it in for the first time.

Did you unplug the USB cable from the computer or from the external drive? This fix has been posted here previously but it was reported that the cable had to be unplugged from the device, not the computer. If the cable was unplugged from the computer instead, the fix didn't work.

  • Xserve Raid will not mount - fibre channel link down

I came back from being out of town and my Xserve is running, but will not mount on the G5 tower via fibre channel. It was powered off and up again and still nothing. Apple tech says to reset raid controllers, however, I have sensitive data on the drives and lots of video/FCP projects on there. It has just run out of warranty and now asked to pay $199 per incident to get any help. I will gladly take any help.
Read the boards, ran Disk Utility and still did not show up.
Also, told the fibre cables tend to "burn out" but have yet to spend money if this is not the problem.
    Thanks.

Resetting the controllers is non-destructive. However, if you power-cycled the array, that should take care of it.
told the fibre cables tend to "burn out"
I've never experienced (or heard of this) myself, and have never had a problem on any of my arrays, some of which have been running for years with zero problems. Of course, environment (especially heat) could play a part, but it seems a little bit of a stretch to me.
Does RAID Admin have anything to say about the RAID?

  • External Drive not mounting anymore. HELP!

I was messing with permissions. I was trying to restrict others from using my external drive. I do know that I never removed myself. Now I see that my external LaCie 250GB drive will not mount. Both 'Disk Utility' and 'Disc Warrior' see and 'repair' the hard drive, but it still does NOT mount on the desktop. What can I do? Please help!

It appears the permissions should be drwxr-xr-x because that is the setting for all other drives and folders. How can I change the permissions? Please help.

  • RAID Drive not showing

    Hi there,
We have an Xserve (Late 2006) running an email server with a RAID5 setup. We had to reboot a week or so ago due to a crash, and since then the Harddrive is not showing up on the desktop, in the finder, in disk utility, or anywhere really. It's like the drive has just dissapeared. However, the server functions fine, and all drives and the drive set are reporting as "Good" in Raid Utility.
Also, if I navigate to say, the Applications folder, it works fine, just the actual Raid Set is not showing up though
    Anything I am missing here?

    We have a similar problem.
We had a crash as well. Now the raidutil shows us that all drives are reliable and in good condition. But a task is started: "Long-running task started: Task=RedundancyScrub"
This is indeed a very long task.. Now running for approx 16 hour and progress is at 32%..
But the big problem is that the volumes are not mounted.. We do not see the volumes in Diskutil.
Is there a way to force mounting of the volumes?
Other question: can anyone explain what 'RedundancyScrub' means and does?
    thanks for any help.
    Regards,
    Ronald

  • How do I make an internal hard drive not mount at startup?

I have an internal hard drive hooked to an ACARD ATA RAID controller that I use for backup purposes, and I would like to mount and unmount it manually. Disk Utility in OS9 and earlier had an option not to mount a disk at startup, but I see no such option in OS X.
I can manually unmount the drive in Disk Utility, but it always comes back up when I reboot. How can I keep the drive from mounting upon reboot?

I discovered this in a quick internet search.

Please note that I have never personally done this and am not recommending it. But maybe it will give you some guidance.

  • 2nd internal drive not mounting, melodic tones at startup

Main drive with System folder on it opens fine at startup, 2nd drive which is a 160 GB Maxtor drive will not mount, nor show up on Disk Utility. Both drives are connected correctly to a Sonnet Tempo ATA/133 card and have been working fine for over three years. Yesterday I went to startup and my computer made a melodic tone similar to a cell phone ringing. Is this an indicator that something's wrong with the drive? The computer is a 867mhz Quicksilver running OS 10.2.8. I tried a few things, I ended up disconnecting the 2nd drive from the ribbon connector & power supply and the melodic tones quit playing at startup. I tried the same ribbon connection and power supply from the dead drive on my good drive and it works fine. I can always replace a bad drive if that is the case, but I had some important video projects on the drive without a backup (lesson well learned here, ouch!). Is it possible to retrieve the data even though the drive will not mount? Any app suggestions or how do I attempt to accomplish this? Thank you!

Many hours worth of work recovered from failed drive! Cool! If anyone out there experiences what I just went through here is what I did:
The Maxtor drive wouldn't spin at startup, apparently the drive has a melodic tone that is supposed to "kickstart" the drive into spinning again when it fails. Well, it didn't do it's thing for me, so I went out and bought a Western Digital drive (supposedly a more reliable brand) with the same 160 GB capacity. I installed and partitioned it, then I installed the bad Maxtor drive in the third bay and ran another cable to my Tempo ATA card's second patch. I left the computer side door open, started up the computer and the drive started to make it's melodic tones again. I knocked on the top of the bad drive with a rubber hammer - wwrrrr, the drive took off running again! It didn't mount the first time, but after a restart it started up on it's own and mounted. What super luck! I was able to transfer all of my work onto the new drive without a hitch. I also found that is very important to read directions pertaining to the proper way to connect a jumper connector on the back of a drive when using multiple drives with an ATA card. I don't trust the Maxtor drive anymore now, so I will just pull it out of the machine. Thanks for the tips Noble B!

  • Hard Drive not mounting on start up, or not mounting at all.

Recently, as some of you may know, I've had hard drive problems. I didn't get it fixed, but the problems came and went and I didn't have time to send it away.
But 2 weeks ago, before I went on holiday, I ran TechTool Deluxe which came with my 3 year Apple Care. It ran, found errors on the drive (something like -38 or -58 errors), so I started repair. It was after 7 hours that I held down the power button, because it just wasn't going anywhere. It had been on the same step and task for 7 hours and kept giving me every now and then the message of "Working...". But that screwed the drive more, as when I turn it on, I get the message stating to restart.
I'e tried getting at the files using this PowerBook and FireWire, using all the correct techniques, but the drive wouldnt even mount on here. Disk Utility could not mount it either.
The files, Im sure, are ok as TechTool gave me a number of the total files on the drive, which is correct. But I just cannot gain access to them.
    Please help, thanks,
    (it's a first gen iMac G5 btw)

  • Seagate Goflex external drive not mounting

Upgraded to Yosemite with no problems. However my Seagate 3tb external drive will not mount, but it is recognized in the disk utility and it is recognized on a pc but will not mount? Is there anything I can do? I tried the goflex thunderbolt dock, Ive tried usb, Ive plugged it into an older imac with 10.7 on it and it says "unrecognizable drive" and gives me options to initialize or eject. Is there anything I can use to just get these files off of here on win or osx?
I have also plugged in two 1tb drives seagate and toshiba and they both work perfectly. And, I have also updated the thunderbolt drivers and all that... I am at a loss of what to do next.

Okay found out the problem, on my exfat formatted drive, after I upgraded to Yosemite it basically created a new partition, a corrupted partition and would not mount my drive. However, I could open it and see it in Disk Utility.
Here's what I did to fix it:
Goto disk utility to see the name of you drive.
Open Terminal and type: sudo fsck_exfat -d disk1s1(this should be the name of your disk)
It will ask for your password then press, enter and it will display all files on the disk.
Then is will ask: Main boot drive needs to be updated?
    Type: Yes
It will update and say that you can repair disk in disk utility.
Do that, and it will show up on the desktop.

Hope this helps, it was a headache for about a week but, Ive read osx does not handle exfat formatting very well.
