Videos replicate on ipad via home sharing

I have a series of videos that I have connected to Home Sharing. My air, imac (both using Lion), and original apple tv all see the video files correctly via itunes (where applicable). However, when accessing the videos on the ipad2, not all the videos show up. Some of the videos are repicated multiple times. What can I do to fix this?

I just fixed the multiple TV Show Icons issue by making sure the "Artist" & "Show" have exactly the same thing on it.
In other words Select all the episodes in a single season on itunes, then go to "Get Info" select the "Info" Tab and in "Artist" type in the of the show "ABC", then click on the "Video Tab" and make sure it says the exact same thing "ABC" as the "Show".  This will fix the repeated icons on the screen and puts all your episodes under the same icon however the sequence of the episodes are now out of order.
Have not figured out how to correct the sequence yet.

  • Cant watch videos on my IPhone via Home sharing

I am able to access the videos on my IPhone via Home Sharing, but when i click on a video i get this message "you do not have permission to access the requested resource"
I have ITunes 10.6.1, I have already made sure that the Homesharing is On for the local network. My IPhone and my Mac are on same netowrk but still whenever I try to open a video from the ITunes library on my IPhone I get this message "you do not have permission to access the requested resource"
Does anybody else have the same problem? Strangely I dont have any problem accssing Music.

What is the source of the videos? With what app are you playing the videos?

  • Video app on iPhone or iPad via Home Sharing is not playing movie's sound or video.

I can successfully connect to iTunes library via Home Sharing on my iPhone 6 Plus and iPad 3rd Generation. In Music app it works ok, but in Videos app, when I try to play a movie it doesn't play the video (but the sound) or the sound (but the video). Sometimes it's one situation and other times is the opposite.

    Greetings avilation,
Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like when you stream videos to your iOS devices using Home Sharing, you only get either video or audio.
You can find some troubleshooting steps that may help this situation on this page:

  • Why won't some of my MP4s stream to Apple TV (or iPad) via Home Sharing?

Hi all. I've been converting my DVDs, HD-DVDs, and Blu-rays to MP4, using MakeMKV and then Handbrake 0.9.9.5530 64-bit for encoding. I have been intending to play the files on my iPad, both transferring to the device and streaming via Home Sharing. I also want stream these via Apple TV (3rd gen, Model A1427) in the house via Home Sharing.
All the files sourced from HD-DVDs & Blu-rays seem to work fine. However, more than half the DVDs I've converted -- using the same Handbrake preset I've been using for the BRs -- will not play back on the iPad, or streamed to the iPad, or streamed to Apple TV. The files will copy to the iPad, but for both device playback and streaming, I get the error message "The operation could not be completed." On Apple TV, it's "An error occurred loading this content, try again later."
The files will play in iTunes for Windows, and they will play in VLC. (Files bought from the iTunes Store also stream fine.) There is no metadata in these files, but I am manually adding a poster image once I drop them into iTunes.
It seems pretty clear that this is a problem with the file itself, but since the only issues I'm having involve streaming, I reset my router for good measure. I restarted the Apple TV and quit all the apps on my iPad before restarting it, too. I've also made sure the firmware on all devices is up to date. None of that had an effect.
I compared a DVD rip (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adeventure) to a BR rip (Independence Day). Both feature exactly the same bitrates & sample rates for video and audio -- according to the Windows Properties -> Details tab, Data rate is 1499kbps, Total bitrate 1659, 23 frames/second, 2 stereo audio channels at 48KHz. The only difference is the BR frame size is larger (1920x812), and of course the run times & file sizes are different. But the bigger file plays fine, and a lot of these smaller files do not.
MP4s from DVDs that will stream: Toy Story, Dead Again, Clue, School of Rock.
MP4s from DVDs that won't stream: Ocean's Eleven, Escape from New York, Galaxy Quest, Robocop (Criterion). Shaun of the Dead, Team America World Police
Again, these were all converted on the same PC with the same software and same settings. If there's a common thread among the source material of the MP4s that will play and won't play, I don't know what it is, but I figured it would not hurt to list it.
My Handbrake settings are based on Handbrake's AppleTV 2 preset, with the following modifications:
Avg Bitrate 1500, 2-pass, no turbo 1st pass
    Framerate: 30, Peak
    Optimize:
    x264 Preset: Very Slow
    H.264 Profile: High
    H.264 Level: 3.1
Container is MP4, as is the file extension. (Since dragged-and-dropped MKV files default to M4V in Handbrake, I select MKV then re-select MP4 from the Container drop-down before adding to Handbrake's queue.)
Someone suggested I simply change the file extension to M4V, so I tried it, but that did not fool any of the stream devices.
I have been testing the output MP4 files on my PC as I go, and once they played fine in VLC after Handbrake, I have been deleting the MKV files. I can go back and rip them all again if I have to (these are all from DVDs I personally own), but obviously I'd rather not do that! So my questions now are:
    - Could this be related to the audio stream? I've been opting for the DD 3/2.1 stream whenever possible when ripping, and letting Handbrake mix it down.
    - If I run the MP4s through Handbrake a second time with a different setting, will it do a pass-through convert instead of a full re-encode? (I don't want to shrink the video if only the audio needs attention.) If so, which setting should that be?
    - Is there a way to repair these MP4 files without completely starting over with a fresh MKV?
    - If I have to start from scratch, should I go with Constant Quality over Average Bitrate?
Hopefully someone can spot my issue based on this description. I'm happy to send you my Handbrake settings as a .plist file and offer any other info I can, as I'm stumped as to what went wrong. There has to be a logical reason. Thanks!

I've continued tests on different films, and tried my entire collection. I've found about two dozen that will play fine on the PC, but will not cooperate when streamed to either Apple TV or my iPad. I tried several more tests with the audio, and that turned out not to be a factor -- I could not replicate that on another test.
I wonder if something in the header of these files is corrupted or a flag is set incorrectly or something along those lines, as the data appears to be fine -- it's just not "handshaking" with my streaming hardware and/or the Apple Home Sharing code that powers it.
Is there any way for me to "scrub" these files and amend their headers, or get into the file and tinker with that info by hand?

  • Why do actor/director tags not appear on iPad via home sharing?

I have imported some movies (not purchased from iTunes) into iTunes, and added tags. The movies play perfectly in iTunes, and via home sharing on my iPad, iPhone, and Apple TV 2. The strange thing is that some of the tags (actors, director) don't display on the iPad when looking at the movie info in the Videos app. They do display on the Apple TV and in iTunes.
Any ideas why this would be so? I know that iTunes movie rentals do display such information on the iPad, so it doesn't seem like this is just not a supported feature.

Also, to expand a bit on this, the list of actors also shows on my iPhone if I touch and hold the name of the movie. So, it seems only the iPad is not getting it.

  • Why does video via home sharing on my iPhone and iPad keep pausing?

Ok, getting pretty frustrated with this.  Everytime my wife or I try to watch movies on our iPhone or iPad with home sharing, the video keeps pausing.  At first it seems to do it every five minutes or so, then gets to the point where as soon as you press the play button again, it pauses.  Tried searching for the problem, but didn't find anything.  We're not losing wifi connection, so I don't know what's going on.

I have this issue as well... It's extremely frustrating. Especially since no one seems to know how to fix it.
From what I can tell, the video isn't streaming to the iDevice quickly enough, so it keeps pausing. My setup at home is all my iTunes library is on a separate HDD connected to my mac via USB and streamed to my iPad via our WiFi. I don't know if travelling through so many devices would slow it down enough to cause it to keep pausing, especially with HD movies. The funny thing is, it works fine between my iMac and my MacBook, so it's the iPad/iPhone that's to blame.
All I can suggest is what I've been doing, which is by no means a solid solution since it sometimes helps the issue and sometimes makes no difference. I restart my iPad/iPhone and I restart iTunes and keep network traffic to a minimum. I've also converted allot of my movies and TV shows to a lower bitrate in the hope that they will play smoother, at a sacrifice of image quality...
To be honest, what I tend to do at the moment is just sync a movie to my iPad when I'm near the computer then, when I'm done, delete it to save space.
I'm afraid that's all I can do to help... I really hope iOS 5 does something to fix this issue since I use home sharing allot and I hate it when it decides not to work.

  • My Apple TV and IPad drop after x mintues from "Home Sharing". To restart it, I need to close iTunes on my Windows 7 PC, open it , then I can listen again X minutes (15-90 minutes) to my music via "Home Sharing". Any idea why? What worked for you?

I believe if you updated your Apple TV, you need iTunes 11 to make it work.

  • HT3819 I have synced my ipad and iphone 5 to itunes and all my songs appear in the device library but i cannot ply all of the songs unless via home sharing. How can i ensure that my libraries appear on each device as the syncing process seems to be failin

    Syncing problems.
How can I sync my iphone 5 and ipad to ensure that i dont need to use home sharing to access all of my music library?

I don't think I have made myself clear... I have recently upgraded my iPhone 4 to a 5 so everything was set up to sync with no problems at all. I transferred everything across to my new device by iCloud and everything appears as it was on my old device including on the face of it my music library. However, I cannot play all of the songs in fact the majority! When at home I can access the entire library via home sharing but that is no use away from the house. I never had this problem with iPhone 4 and although I am automatically syncing the device to iTunes it is not working. If I try to play songs via the device it skips until it finds a song that cAn be played and if I try and play the device via the laptop/iTunes an ! Type signal appears and I cannot play the song!
Any ideas re solutions would be appreciated???

  • Can I share music from iPad and PC via home sharing?

There are two accounts, one on each, because I fouled up when I bought the iPad; different email etc. and in the confusion I ended up with two accounts. I cannot 'merge' accounts but is there a way via home sharing to transfer? (Now just purchasing from one account!)
    Thanks.

Using both iPad 2 and iPhone 4s to view iTunes library on my iMac via Home Sharing. Both see very limited amounts of Artists/Albums from iMac library. Also, both see different Artist/Albums. p.s. I used Home Sharing for 3 yrs w/o problems, before this.

No. Homeshare let's you view your iTunes library or others on your network.
Movies should be in the video app on the home screen. If they are not there, then make sure when your iPad is plugged into iTunes on your computer...the video tab is checked to sync what you want..make sure you hit apply after. You should see the movies transferring to your iPad in the status bar on the top of iTunes.

  • HT3819 Can I transfer music from one computer to another via home sharing?

Can I transfer my music from one computer to another via home sharing?

So long as they are on the same wifi network, yes.
Have both computers running and have iTunes open on both computers.
Now, in the iTunes on the computer you want to transfer music to, select the library that you want to transfer music from, as per the following screenshot:
Once the other library loads, go down to the bottom of the screen and in "Show:" select "Items not in my library":
If you want to import all of the songs you can now see, head up to the iTunes menu bar and go "Edit > Select all". Then head down to the bottom of the screen again and click the "Import" button in the bottom-right-hand corner.
If there's a lot of stuff in the library you're transferring from, the transfer may take some time.
