View in external browser keeps opening new tabs

Recently, in a failed effort to address the new version's inability to close successfully, I reset Firefox. I seem to have lost another valuable setting, and I can't remember how to recreate it.
I use a peculiar, old html editor. When I ask it to "View in External Browser," naturally it opens Firefox. (I forget whether I created that setting or if it inherited it for me from my default in Windows.) In the past, if I asked to do so more than once, following further edits, it would open in the same tab, or rather in whatever tab was on top. Now, since my reset, it opens a new tab, and I can get a distressing number of them.
What setting have I forgotten to change, presumably in Firefox itself or Tab Mix Plus? Thanks,

As I say, I'm reluctant to change that about:config setting until I have to, since (1) it's not clear to me what it does and (2) I'm dead sure it's not an about:config setting I've ever had to touch before, so it couldn't possibly recreate my former behavior.
Now: I went into Tools, Options, Tabs and made sure that Open Links That Open in a New Window read Current Tab. Still, it was getting weird: even Googling for a site and then clicking on the search find opened a new tab, as if I really want to keep the Google listing. I'm sure I'd never seen that before on multiple computers over the years. Have others? Truly weird what v29 with Reset has done.
Next, I opened Tab Mix Plus Options and found I had the same option, weirdly enough, still set to New Tab, so I changed it. This stopped anything at all from opening in a new tab.
Now, it's progress, but I'm sure my old browser behavior was more intuitive than that. Some things really did open a new tab, such as external links in Facebook posts. I know I can get that from right-clicking, but I didn't have to. Now I'm still confused as to how much Firefox has changed on me in the last three weeks and how much time it has taken to try to adjust it. I've never been clueless at the computer before.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow Apple Support's instructions to remove it.
If you have trouble following those instructions, see below.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable string of characters, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes it's a meaningless string such as "e8dec5ae7fc75c28" rather than a word. Sometimes the string is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the string something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.
    Open this folder:
    /Library/Application Support
If it has a subfolder named just
               something
where something is the same string you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it.
    Finally, in this folder:
    /System/Library/Frameworks
there may an item named exactly
                v.framework
It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name; it doesn't vary. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

I have a new MacBook Pro. I am using firefox version 7.0.1, but my homepage is set to google. Firefox constantly keeps opening new tabs to its own homepage by itself. How can I disable this feature.

    Hi [email protected]
If you have set Google to be your homepage, that should be the first one to appear. Are you seeing the Firefox home page when you open new tabs? New tabs should be blank by default. The only reason I've seen Firefox open new tabs with Firefox data on it is after an upgrade of the product.

  • Firefox keeps opening "new tabs" in a whole new firefox session.

OK so this is probably an easy fix but I just had to wipe my comp and I am in the process of getting all my stuff back so my mind is muddled. That's my excuse anyways.
My issue is that when I click "open a new tab" Firefox will open a whole new browsing session instead of just a new tab next to the one I am currently on. I have already tried fixing it by going to options and mucking about the tabs options but nothing seems to be helping it.
Thanks in advance for any help and sorry if this is a repeat question but I couldn't find it on here.

  • External apps not opening new tabs

I am currently trying to update my Tomtom Satnav by adding "community" items. In theory when using the "My Tomtom" program, on clicking the "Add Community Content" bar, it should open up a new tab in my browser, whether it be FIrefox or I.E. It is doing neither.

  • Firefox keeps opening new tabs on its own...I've run virus scans and re-downloaded..HELP!

Ok, random tabs open in Firefox often enough to really get annoying. I don't want to switch back to IE (ew), but I will if I can't fix this. Normally, it's a Google ad that opens, but today, a site for adult products opened. I have a 13 yr. old daughter who does NOT need to see this.
Here's what I've done to try to correct this problem so far...
    -I've un-installed and re-installed Firefox at leas 4 times
-I've run Malware Bytes Anti-Malware, Ad-Ware, AVG scans and Super Anti Sypware...multiple times
-I've deleted and replaced the dll file WS2_2.dll with a new one
-I've re-configured add-ons according to another support site.
Anyone got any better ideas? I really don't want to go back to IE! Please help!!

    Hi Guys,
I'm not actually from Mozilla Firefox, but I've had this problem before, and I've solved it with the help from another website.
What you need to do is download a programme called "tdsskiller" from here:
    http://www.geekpolice.net/t23369-computer-infected
scroll down the page and you should see a link. (I know the article itself seems irrelevant to your problem, but trust me, the programme they recommend works on this virus too.) It's only 1.3MB or so, so it doesn't take up huge amounts of space either! :)
I can safely say that it is COMPLETELY safe to download this from geekpolice.net, as this website is a free website which helps people with viruses on their computer. If you ever have another problem with anything to do with computers, go and have a look on geekpolice.net, they should have something that might help you.
Before anyone wonders why I am singing its praises so much, no I am not advertising them for any personal gain, but they have helped me get rid of some pretty nasty viruses on my computer before, so I am very grateful to them :)
SO, anyway, after you've downloaded the tdsskiller, you should run it, and it may find some infected files, in which case let it repair them. After rebooting your computer, the annoying opening tab thing should be gone!
I hope this works for anyone who's stuck :) If it doesn't, I'm really sorry, but it has definately worked for me!
    Good luck!
    Yashmeee :)

  • Latest version of firefox keeps opening new tabs when I don't want it to - how can I stop it from doing that?

I'm running 8.01. Another PC next to me is at 8.0, and it doesn't do that.

"Clear the Cache": Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove the Cookies" from sites causing problems: Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
If clearing the cookies doesn't help then it is possible that the file ''cookies.sqlite'' that stores the cookies is corrupted.
You can rename (or delete) '''cookies.sqlite''' (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete '''cookies.sqlite-journal''' and '''cookies.txt''', if they exist, in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder] in case cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

  • How to Open External Links in a New Tab

I want links in web pages to open in the current tab so I have browser.link.open_newwindow=1. But how do I make links from extenal applications open in a new tab?

Try setting the following to 3, not really sure if preference was actually removed or just won't accept 2, the intent was that the two variables be the same (I think)
browser.link.open_external -- Where to open links sent to the browser from an external application
    * 2 (default in SeaMonkey): Opens external links in a new window
    * 3 (default in Firefox): Opens external links in a new tab in the most recent window
    * 1 (or anything else): Opens external links in current window
Note: In Firefox 2 and above, via “Tools → Options → Tabs → New pages should be opened in:” (same as browser.link. open_newwindow)
    Pref removed from Firefox 3.5

[BUG FIXED, see "EDIT 2" at the end of my post]
I'm on Firefox 3.6.21, and I got this problem today after a Greasemonkey update (To version 0.9.10, apparently).
Disabling Greasemonkey solved the problem, and re-enabling it reproduced the problem (middle-clicking links to open in new tab did not work, merely highlighted the link).
I should also note that while Greasemonkey was enabled and the bug was affecting me, Ctrl+Click to open links in new tabs was also broken.
    I hope this helps!
EDIT: It appears this is a known incompatibility/conflict bug between current versions of Greasemonkey and Tab Mix Plus. Read more here:
    https://github.com/greasemonkey/greasemonkey/issues/1406
EDIT 2: GREASEMONKEY HAS NOW BEEN UPDATED with a workaround to fix the problem. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/versions/ to install the update manually. It hasn't been reviewed by Mozilla yet, so it won't be an automatic update for another day or two. All credit to "cannonfodder" below for noticing this; please mark his post as helpful!

  • Why does Firefox keep opening new Windows rather than a new Tab in the current window?

I have " Open a new Tab in the current Window" select in Preferences.
Why then does this version (Version 4) keep opening new Windows, rather than new Tabs in the current Window.
This feature worked fine in 3.6.1.3, but in Version 4, it is a frigging pain in the rigging!

    Hello,

can find nothing under the tools menu for private browsing?
Then it's not the same issue.
If Firefox is set to '''Never remember history''', then you're in “permanent private browsing” mode, in which case the menu item ''Stop Private Browsing'' will be grayed out. Perhaps that's the case, and you don't find the menu item easy to see?
    * [[Settings for privacy, browsing history and do-not-track]]
If that's not the case, then menu items can be hidden using the userChrome.css file. Check if it exists, and if it's there, rename it, then restart Firefox.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css
In Firefox Nightly (what will become Firefox 20), per-window private browsing has been added, so the menu item under the Tools menu is gone. It's been replaced by New Private Window under the File menu. I don't suppose it's very likely that you're using such a cutting-edge test version of Firefox though.
If that doesn't solve the problem, since it's a different issue, it would be best if you would ask a new question.

When I click on the + symbol next to the tab I am working in, Firefox should open a new tab. However, this function no longer works in my Firefox browser. What do I need to do to open new tabs again?
