View XML files in Firefox without using source view

Whenever I open an XML file in Firefox, the tags are all stripped off and I see just plain text like this XML File 1 in Firefox. The same file displays in Internet Explorer like this XML File 1 in Internet Explorer
For an average user, this is the preferred view, as he can see the text content of the XML file without worrying about the tags in the document. For other more advanced users like myself, this is very inconvenient.
There are even some cases where Firefox does not display anything because all the tags are stripped off like in this case
XML File 2 in Firefox
here is the same file in Internet Explorer XML File 2 in Internet Explorer.
The workaround I use now is to view the file's source so that I get to see everything. I must say, however, that this is very inconvenient. If the user does not specify any style sheet for formatting the XML file, I believe the file should be left as-is; it should not be touched.
Kindly review this so we can confidently use Firefox as our default browser without having to switch to IE from time to time.

@cor-el
I am aware of the solution you're proposing. I even stated it as the workaround I use currently.
My point is that the browser should have an option to display the raw XML without stripping off all the tags just like Internet Explorer or even Chrome (see attached image).

• Can I load xml file from SWC without using @embed

I'm developing a mobile application in which I need to load xml files from File.applicationDirectory. This works great if the xml files are part of the main application swf. But I would like to move these xml files into a SWC so they could be shared across multiple applications.
Using FlashBuilder 4.5, when a SWC is built, I can specify files to embed in the library that are not assets (Assets Tab of Flex Library Build Path). For various design reasons, I do NOT want to embed the xml files via @embed.
When the swc is built and I open it up using a zip utility, I see the xml files in there just fine. So they are being bundled with the SWC. But how can I load these files in my main application that does not involve using @embed? When the main application is built, the swc setting for link type is "merged into code".
I wouldn't expect the application to automatically pull out the xml files from the swc and place them in the File.applicationDirectory on the mobile device. I've tried loading from there just in case but file.exists is false (as expected).
I've searched the web (and continue to do so) and all the answers seem to be to use @embed. Is there another way?
Randy

It's actually a lot easier than you think.
Just reference the file like any'ol URL using a path relative to the SWC's src directory.
So if you include the file "assets/xml/some.xml", just use that same string like you would any remote resource.
For example:
var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader( new URLRequest("assets/xml/some.xml"));
I believe it would also work like this "/assets/xml/some.xml", but I prefer relative paths so the link doesnt break if moved out of the SWC...

• Hi,am not able to open PDF Files in Mozilla Firefox without using plugins...I need Solution

Hi,am not able to open PDF Files in Mozilla Firefox without using plugins...I need Solution

Hello,
Please see the support article below for full information on viewing PDF in Firefox:
View PDF files in Firefox without downloading them
If you want to use Firefox's built in PDF viewer (i.e. not a plugin) then you will need to ensure that any PDF plugins are uninstalled from Firefox and that 'Preview in Firefox' is selected as the Action for PDF files (see screenshot below).
I hope that helps. Let me know if not.

• Unable to add XML files to genericObjects Folders using Webdav - cFolders

Hi All
I am not able to add XML files to genericObjects Folders using Webdav in cFolders
What could be the reason.. When I try to copy, it says "cant read from source file"
Regards,
Aby

Yes.. I downloaded the ECN.XML file from se80, edited and then used "Uplload and replace"..
Also I did the same thing to add some more vocabulary in the cfx text XML, so that it would reflect correctly to map with Additional attributes in the PDX profile.

• I can't open .xml files from a CD using firefox. They open OK with IP, but not Firefox.

the .xml files are on a cd, when using MS Internet Explorer they open OK, with Firefox set as defasult browser I get a message saying unable to open <filename>

I've compaired two machines that have had this issue. One I fixed by simply reinstalling v9.3.3 off the Adobe Site. Once fixed I compaired the Registry Settings to the one that was still broken. I found that a registry setting was missing in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat. All you have to do is right click on Acrobat, select NEW --> KEY, and call it EXE. Select the newly created folder, and in the right pane, right click, select NEW --> STRING VALUE. Double click the newly created string and under the Value Data: copy and paste the following line including the qoutations. "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" Once you are complete, close IE and reopen it and try and open a Adobe Reader File.
If you want the easier method you can also copy and paste the following code into WordPad and just change the file extention to .REG
Then all you have to do is double click the file and it will insert it into the registry automatically.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Reader 9.0\\Reader\\AcroRd32.exe\""
Hope this helps,

• Viewing PDF files in Firefox on Intel Mac

Before moving to my MacBook Pro, I used Schubert-IT's PDF Plugin to view pdf files directly in my browser. That plugin is not intel-friendly, though, and Adobe doesn't let mac users utilize reader within their browser, so does anyone know of another program to view pdf files directly in a browser, without having to open preview separately?

Adobe Reader and its plug-in are PowerPC code, so the plug-in will only execute in a PowerPC application. Since Firefox is now Universal, you have to tell the system to run it under Rosetta in order for it to be able to execute PowerPC plug-ins. To do this, first quit Firefox, then find the its icon in the Finder, issue the Get Info command (or Command-I) and select the "Open using Rosetta" command. Now relaunch. It should be able to run PowerPC plug-ins (and only PowerPC plug-ins) in this mode. It will also take more RAM and run slower.

• How to display an xml file contents in jsp as tree view

hi,
Iam trying to read an xml file and display the structure in jsp as tree view, can any one help me

Use a [XML or DOM parser|http://java-source.net/open-source/xml-parsers] to read a XML file into a tree structure of Java objects.
Use the [Collections API|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/collections/index.html] to get hold of the relevant elements in a tree structure.
Use JSTL´s [c:forEach|http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/tutorial/doc/bnakh.html] tag to iterate over a Collection in JSP.
Use HTML´s [<ul>/<li>|http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/struct/lists.html#h-10.2] or [<dl>/<dt>/<dd>|http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/struct/lists.html#h-10.3] tags to represent a tree in HTML.

• Viewing XML files...

I just started using Safari recently and really like it. I had been using Firefox. There is only one thing I can't figure out and would like to see...XML files with a collapsable tree structure. When I load an XML file I just get the words. I know it must be possible because right clicking and selecting "Inspect Element" has something very similar.
Is there a way to do this without that extra step?
Thanks,
John

XML files usually need something like an accompanying CSS file to format any data they contain so that you can see the data.
I thought maybe you had downloaded the file from the internet. If it is from an app on your Mac don't change the Open With setting.
As an experiment, write the name of the file in the search box in the upper right of a Finder window. When the file shows up below, highlight it and at the bottom of the finder window will appear its filepath. You should be able to tell what app it is associated with.
The fact that double clicking and Big Board Games opens probably tells us it is a data file associated with BBG.

• Generation of XML file from Java objects using castor

I have the following java file(Customer.java).
public class Customer
         private String ID;
         private FirstName firstName;
         private MiddleName middleName;
         private LastName lastName;
         private ArrayList address;
         public ArrayList getAddress() {
              return address;
         public void setAddress(ArrayList address) {
              this.address = address;
         public FirstName getFirstName() {
              return firstName;
         public void setFirstName(FirstName firstName) {
              this.firstName = firstName;
         public String getID() {
              return ID;
         public void setID(String id) {
              ID = id;
         public LastName getLastName() {
              return lastName;
         public void setLastName(LastName lastName) {
              this.lastName = lastName;
         public MiddleName getMiddleName() {
              return middleName;
         public void setMiddleName(MiddleName middleName) {
              this.middleName = middleName;
Using castor i have created an xml file(customer.xml) which has the following format.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
- <customer ID="fbs0001">
<FIRSTNAME>Fred</FIRSTNAME>
<MIDDLENAME>B</MIDDLENAME>
<LASTNAME>Scerbo</LASTNAME>
- <ADDRESS>
<FIRSTLINE>No 18, Sheshadri road</FIRSTLINE>
<SECONDLINE>Gandhinagar Bangalore</SECONDLINE>
</ADDRESS>
- <ADDRESS>
<FIRSTLINE>ITPL</FIRSTLINE>
<SECONDLINE>Whitefield Bangalore</SECONDLINE>
</ADDRESS>
</customer>
I have used a mapping file to get this output.Is there a way where i can get the output xml in the following format without changing the Java object structure.If yes then please suggest how this can be done.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
- <customer ID="fbs0001">
<FIRSTNAME>Fred</FIRSTNAME>
<MIDDLENAME>B</MIDDLENAME>
<LASTNAME>Scerbo</LASTNAME>
</customer>
<ADDRESS>
<FIRSTLINE>No 18, Sheshadri road</FIRSTLINE>
<SECONDLINE>Gandhinagar Bangalore</SECONDLINE>
</ADDRESS>
- <ADDRESS>
<FIRSTLINE>ITPL</FIRSTLINE>
<SECONDLINE>Whitefield Bangalore</SECONDLINE>
</ADDRESS>
I mean the output xml file should have the address as a separate tag not withing the root tag customer.

Hello,
Castor's own discussion groups might be able to point you to the solution you're looking for (if this use case is possible using Castor).
Oracle has its own object-to-XML mapping tool that is part of the TopLink product. It allows you to map existing objects to an existing XML Schema. This can be done visually using the TopLink Workbench, or programmatically using the TopLink APIs. TopLink OXM also supports the JAXB specification.
Using TopLink OXM to get the desired XML result I would recommend the following. Map the Customer and Address classes to XML, but don't map the relationship between Customer and Address. Then make the calls to the marshaller something like the following:
marshaller.marshal(aCustomer, System.out);
for(int x=0; x<aCustomer.getAddress().size(); x++) {
         marshal(aCustomer.getAddress().get(x), System.out);
Example - Using TopLink OXM to map an existing object model to an existing XML Schema:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/ias/toplink/preview/10.1.3dp4/howto/ox/index.htm

Two options that come to mind. Others exist.
#1 - {thread:id=474031}, which is basically storing the XML in an Object Relational structure for parsing
#2 - Dump the XML into either an XMLType based table or column and use SQL (with XMLTable) to create a view that parses the data. This would be the same as the view shown in the above post.
Don't use sql*loader to parse the XML. I was trying to find a post from mdrake about that but couldn't. In short, sql*loader was not build as an XML parser so don't try to use it that way.
