Viewing in alternate browsers

I was just putting the finishing touches on my first website
(I thought) and previewed in my browser (Safari). Everything looked
fine. When I checked it in Opera and Internet Explorer I had a
problem with the pages laying on top of each other. These are
mostly image pages with a small amount of print. Back, Next, Home.
When clicking on next, for instance, instead of just going to the
next image, the whole page lays on top of the previous one. What
did I do wrong? Please help before I pull out all my hair!
Thanks.

Post a link to the pages, please.

  • How do you set up so that you can view the alternate text on an image when you hover over it like you do in IE?

Using Mozilla at present the alternate text for an image does not pop up when you hover your mouse over the image. This is what occurs in Internet Explorer. In Mozilla Firefox you have to right click, choose Properties and then you can view the alternate text. Is there a way to set up the mouse hover? Or is there a keyboard shortcut to at least view the Properties information of an image on a webpage quicker?

The Alt attribute isn't meant to show as a tooltip on hover.
The Alt attribute is meant to show if the image isn't or can't be displayed.
The title attribute is meant to show if you hover an image or link.

  • Spacing issue in alternate browsers

Our website is having an odd spacing/text issue which I can't
seem to figure out. When the pages load in IE everything loads
correctly, but if the site is viewed in an alternate browser (like
Mozilla) there are giant spaces between sections, and the font
sizes on some pages are changing. This all started after we applied
a new template to the site for our menus so I know it’s a
problem with the code. I have gone through the code on several of
the pages and the template, and I can't seem to find the cause. I'm
still pretty new to Dreamweaver and CSS so it might be an obvious
    error.
    The page in question is
    http://www.fcwp.org (spacing issues)
    and
    http://fcwp.org/MOSQUITO%20INFORMATION/mosquito_information.htm
(text becomes very small). All the pages use the same template so
    fixing one should fix all.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I'm not seeing those symptoms here on FF2 Windows.
The first step to getting browsers to render (nearly) the
    same way is
to tell them exactly how to interpret the code. Try adding
    the DOCTYPE
via File->Convert->HMTL 4.01 Strict (or Transitional).
Next, provide valid HTML code. If you enter either of the
    above URLs at
    http://validator.w3.org you will
see many errors. Some will go away
    after inserting the DOCTYPE.
    > <TD height="95" colSpan=2 bgColor=#336633><IMG
    height=89
That's one the errors listed in the validator that the
    DOCTYPE won't
fix. Use quotes around the colors: "#336633"

  • How do I write code for a website that is viewed in different browsers?

Hello.  My website looks fine when using the Firefox and Safari browsers.  But when I went to the library and viewed it using Internet Explorer, it looks bad.  It doesn't look the way I want it to.  Many of the elements are in different positions, etc.  I thought about how to correct this.  And I'm guessing that another html file can be created with another style sheet attached and designed just for Internet Explorer.  But then I thought about how the server would determine which file to use when the visitor types in the URL.  I have no idea how to do this.  I would greatly appreciate knowing how to write code that enables visitors, whether they use Firefox or Internet Explorer, to view my website that has the same style and elements in the correct positions on each webpage.   Thank you very much.

You need to close your img tags (shown below in red).
    <img src="images/home_page/snowscene_web.jpg" />
    <img src="images/home_page/2011-1_201_p5_christians_nora_pixel2_2_web.jpg" />
    <img src="images/home_page/poster_final_web.jpg" />
Your home page looks OK in IE8 & 9 but looks bad in Compatablity Mode (which is essentially IE7).  Try adding this META tag just below your <title> tags.  This will force older IE browser into IE8 or IE9 standards mode if it's available.  IE7 is pretty much obsolete now.

  • Trouble viewing with other browsers

    hi anyone that can help?
believelifecoaching.com is the site that i created on iweb. everything looks create when i use safari to view my site. on the other hand when i use IE or firefox (depending on the version) the site has script errors. Does anyone know of a setting or a way to make iweb created sites more "browser friendly".
    thx

Just a heads up about the text in the nav buttons. They need to be checked. 3 of the 4 are not aligned properly in the shapes that make up the buttons and the About Me on the first page is too large for its location.
In order to make iWeb more dark side friendly you'll have to dumb it down quite a bit and lose much of its pizzazz in the process. I'm told that IE7 is by far the most compatible of the IE browsers. Firefox 3 is now pretty good with iWeb sites. For maximum compatibility do as Certified recommended, use another web site editor that doesn't use as much javascript to create the site.

  • Can not view pictures on browsers after latest Ipad update to Ver:4.3.5 (8L)

I just updated my Ipad to the latest rev: 4.3.5(8L1) today.  Now I'm not able to see pictures on CL and other browsers liek Opera mini.  Can some tell me what happen and how can it be fixed!  Thanks

    Hello King_Penguin,
This worked! Thank you so much!
I deleted one track from my iPad library when connected and visible in iTunes on my computer, I then dragged the same track from my iTunes library back onto the iPad. It copied and done a sync. When I went into my iPad music on the device itself it sat updating the library for around a minute then everything was there!
Thanks again, 30GB of music/videos/films all back!

  • DW CS5 question about page layout viewed in different browsers

    Hello.
I am still very new to Dreamweaver CS5 and I need help with the appearance of a new website that I have been creating. We are mac based and I'm currently using Mac OS10. The layout I have created should appear centered on the page and it contains a solid background image. When I view it on our macs using Safari, everything looks exactly as it should, but when viewing it on a PC using the Internet Explorer 8, the text, spry menu bar and image of a doctor on the right hand side (that is set to change every time the page is refreshed), all shift to the right. Any advise on fixing this issue would be extremely helpful. The index page and the pages under the obstetrics menu are the only ones that I have completed so far. Here is a link to the web page: http://www.advertools.net/COBGYN/index.html
    Thank you for your assistance.

    Hi
Yes, I am referring to the fact you are using absolute positioning for the divs, and that this is causing your problems.
If you change the top, left/right values you are using to position them to % values this will alleviate the problem, (not completely though). Instead of say -
    top: 500px;
    left: 450px
    use
    top 70%;
    left: 40%;
The values are only examples and you will have to adjust these to suite your needs.

  • Publishing and viewing in other browsers

I've published my iweb file to a folder for upload to my domain server, and I have tested the links in Safari and Firefox and they are working well. Internet Explorer (MSIE) on the other hand has not been successful in any of the versions I've tested. I've refined fonts and images to optimize for the web, but that does not help. I am not a coder (thus iweb) so I don't know how to amend the links other than in the inspector pallete. Any ideas how to troubleshoot this so that MSIE sees the same thing that Firefox and Safari do?
BTW i'm testing in MSIE 5.2. If there is a newer MAC version of MSIE I'm not aware of it.

Give this site a try to test your iWeb page: Test your web design in different browsers.
Member Roddy has gathered a number of tips on making iWeb more compliant with IE.
"Basically, iWeb is way too sophisticated for Internet Explorer to handle.
You have to "build down" your site for the World's Worst Browser.
Use web safe fonts.
Don't convert text to graphics .
Optimize all your images.
Don't use drop shadows, reflections etc.
Keep your page file sizes down to a minimum.
Run your files through an optimizing application"
In addition here are some other tips I've gathered from this forum:
1 - do not use and frames or borders, etc. around photos.
    2 - don't use any reflections.
3 - use only the web safe fonts from the Font pane.
4 - do not use drop shadow on fonts.
5 - turn off smart quotes
6- if you add a jpg to a page don't resize it in iWeb as that will cause it to be converted to png. Resize it to what you need before adding to the page. Then go into the Inspector/Metrics window and click on the Original size button. iWeb will resize any image no matter what size it is originally.
7 - make sure no items are touching or overlaping text boxes or images as that will cause them to be converted to a png file.
The above will reduce the number and size of files associated with a web page quite a bit. Photos with fancy frames and reflections can generate a thumbnail png of around 110KB whereas the plain version will be a jpg of only 28KB. Although it doesn't sound like a lot, it will speed up loading of the page and be more darkside (i.e. PC) friendly.
Run a test with a test site and publish to a folder. Then follow the hints above and publish to another folder and compare folders.

  • Can't view video from browsers (mac)

Un-installed previous Flash players. Installed current Flash Player & Flash plugin-10.1r82 (trying to fix this problem). Youtube videos play, but most others display the standard "An error occurred, try again later" prompt. Same result in current Safari and Firefox. Surprising to see such a basic function fail & not see any posts specific to this problem. I am on a pre-intel G5 quad, but I believe that is current enough hardware for this task (?)  Apple is no help with their "anti Flash" stance.
Standard youtube videos are viewable. But Error occurs in embedded videos. Also this major youtube link:
    http://www.youtube.com/sonyeurope
    Suggestions appreciated!

That other post, he did have Flash Player Installed but couldn't view the videos. When he did the test he couldn't see the animation so that is why I didn't think FP was Installed and had him Uninstall and Install again. However he still couldn't view the videos. Only when he went to Preferences and enabled that Shockwave Flash plugin in Safari was he able to and that was the problem. That's what I thought your problem may be.
Now I don't know if you have the hardware acceleration turned off or not. When this version of Flash Player came out it was supposed to work for the Mac. Some of the Mac versions it does and some it does not. You can try turning it off if you haven't. It is turned on by default. Go back to that test site I gave you and right click on the Flash logo, click on Settings,
then Display Settings is where you will see to UNcheck the h.a.
Did you find the Shockwave Flash plugin enabled in FF? And is it enabled in Safari?
    Thanks,

This is extreme, but you could wipe the playbook to get the default settings back:

  • "Full Screen View" option for browsers

I produce iMovie projects such as:
    http://firmimage.ca/10delisle110.php
I would like to to add a "Full Screen View" option & don't know how.
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance

They key is to "target" the QuickTime Player instead of the browser plug-in.
This is done with new "tags" in the special html code and a secondary .mov file that acts as a "poster movie". When the visitor clicks on the poster movie the 'href' (linked file) URL loads in the QuickTime Player. The poster movie could be a small image file (saved as .mov) to act as a button.
QuickTime Player Pro can add special "Presentation" properties to a file such as "Full Screen" and "Quit when done".
Snow Leopard's QuickTime X doesn't seem to like the stored Presentation feature, however. One of my pages that shows how it works (sort of). View Source to see the html code.

  • What alternate browsers are recommended for OSX-Mavericks?

I cannot read material from several important sites (ie, distance learning university) that are accessed with my web browser.  Currently, I have both Safari and Firefox installed. When I access my distance university site, the text is overlapped and unreadable as well as being unable to click on various subsections.  What other web browsers are available which might alleviate this issue?  I'm going crosseyed!
    Thanx

There is Omniweb,Opera, iCab, and others listed on my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/browser.html
Note any website that does not work well in Safari and Firefox is likely not following http://www.w3.org/ conventions, and has not seen http://www.anybrowser.org/ for hints on accessibility or security.   If you are going to give them your personal information, make sure they work well with Safari and Firefox first.   Saying "it works with Internet Explorer" does not cut it in terms of security.

  • Problem viewing slideshow in browsers

I'm still pretty new to Dreamweaver, so please bear with me.  I'm working on a site with a slideshow, and the design looks great in Dreamweaver, but does not render in IE or Chrome.  I should clarify that - it renders in IE but first a yellow rectaungular box pops up that says IE has restricted the web page from running scripts/ActiveX controls, and then even when I click 'Allow', another security warning box pops up.  Not cool.  In Chrome none of the thumbnails or larger images show.  I used a spry slideshow and suspect something is wrong with the xml or js files.
The folder has xpath.js version 0.7 and SpryData.js version 0.52, s style sheet, and data.xml, which takes care of the images.
In dreamweaver, the page looks like this: http://brucebolander.com/PICTURE-SLIDES/PICTURESLIDESTEST.html, and the thumbnails link to the larger image.
    The html is:

    Rich

I apologize - I hadn't re-loaded the page to update my current design.  And as soon as I did, it worked in chrome and IE - and the security warning is gone in IE.  But the images did not show up in the dreamweaver chrome preview.  Weird
    Here is the page: http://brucebolander.com/SLIDESHOW/Index.html
Anyways, I still have some tweaking to do - but the slideshow works.  It does do a weird shifty thing when a user clicks on the thumbnail images to bring up the large photos, however.  It looks like it only happens with the more vertically oriented images in chrome, but in IE, until a user has clicked on every thumbnail & they are all 'loaded' (I don't know if that's the right word), the page shifts with each new click on a thumbnail.  And even then, some photos still cause the shift.
I tried mucking around with the widths, but per the data.xml file they should all be 800px wide...not sure.
IE also places a black border around the header image - changing it to border:none in the css doesn't help.
If anyone has any ideas about these issues please post - thanks!

  • Website not viewing properly in browsers

I am totally not a web designer so any input would be
appreciated. For now let's just deal with my agencies homepage,
    http://www.casra.org/casra/home.html
and hopefully any fixes I can take to other pages having problems.
In Firefox, part of my header is not displaying. Scrolling
down, under "CASRA Spring Conference" there is a normal text link
and then a text title done on .swf format that is not showing. To
the right there is a graphic in that red box that isn't showing. I
discovered on a different machine that this isn't displaying
properly in IE 7 but seems okay in IE 6.
To see my header displayed properly go to
    http://www.casra.org/social_rehab/home.html,
works in both Firefox and IE 6 & 7. What I find interesting is
the header is a library item that should be consistent through all
the pages but it displays right on some pages and not others.
My boss designated me our web designer, I am a policy analyst
so any help would be much appreciated.

  • Can't play/view CNBC Videos in Safari?

I do a lot of stock trading & often want to watch videos on CNBC.com. They will not play in Safari for me. I have an iMac C2D 2.16 Ghz. I have installed Flip4mac & also have Java plug-in installed. I can view NBC video fine & most other websites that have video, not all. Any idea why I can't view the CNBC videos?
    Example of CNBC video: http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=219226747&play=1
    iMac / C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Adding to Barry's helpful direction, the link you posted has poor coding. As Safari follows strict industry guidelines, this type of site usually won't render in Safari.
I tried the link in Firefox where it played without problem, although the CPU temperature when up 10 degrees C.
Poor coding contributes to inconsistancy across platforms and browsers. The Web Standards Project is attempting to raise industry awareness and standards to minimize this type of problem.
In the meantime, it's good to have alternate browsers. I use Safari as a primary with Firefox and Opera (sometimes Camino) as alternatives. Here's the various sources where you can download the browsers:
    Firefox
    Camino,
    Mozilla,
    Opera,
    OmniWeb (shareware).
