Virtual Box error: error mounting /dev/sda1 on /mnt

Hello folks,
After getting fed up with Ubuntu's bloated setup, I was trying to switch to Arch linux. But before that I wanted to try it in Virtual Box. I was using Arch Linux Core image for this.  But after setting up file system and mountpoint I am getting this error:
error mounting /dev/sda1 on /mnt
The steps I followed:
1. Source: Core local
2. Editor: Nano
3. Clock: As usual
4. Prepare hard drive:
   a) Manually Partition (as this is what I will be doing during actual installation)
   b) /dev/sda
   c) New partition on all space available on virtual machine, making it primary, bootable, Type: Linux Extended (option 85).
   d) Write partition and Quit and Done
5. Manually configure block device, filesystems and mountpoints.
   a) dev
   b) Do not recreate file system.
   c) Set ext4 format and mount point, ignoring swap space or seperate /boot partition.
   d) Now when I goto next step as Done, It gives an error : Error mounting /dev/sda1 on /mnt/.
Is there any problem with creating the filesystem as I have done? Can anyone shed some light if there is any particular configuration needed for virtual machine. I searched the forum for other options. But none of them seem applicable for me.
Thank you for your time.

What host os and CPU are you using? The message states that you need virtualization hardware support in the CPU (Intel VT-x or AMD-V) in order to run that 64 bit guets OS. Reasons for this error (that I could think of) could be:
- you have a very old cpu
- you have disabled virtualization in your bios
- you are running a 32-bit host os

  • Error: Waiting for /dev/sda1 for 10 seconds...

    Hi,
I upgraded this morning to the following:
    - mkinitcpio 0.13.0-1
    - linux-lts 3.0.67-1
Now the server won't reboot, it always says "Waiting for /dev/sda1 for 10 seconds..." in the initramfs shell.
Indeed there is no /dev/sd* in /dev, or even /dev/disk-by* to try and boot using the UUID.
Since it's a remote server, it's hard to debug. Hopefully no critical service is running on it.
The default linux 3.7.9-2 gives the same error.
I managed to get it back on line using the fallback initrd: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … onger_boot
I also tried to reinstall udev,linux-lts, systemd and mkinitcpio as advised but the /dev/sda1 error was still there.
    My mkinitcpio.conf:
    MODULES=""
    BINARIES=""
    FILES=""
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems keyboard fsck"
    # no compression
Nothing fancy, no RAID, no LVM, not even /boot on a separate partition:
    - /dev/sda1 on /
    - /dev/sda2 on /home
    - /dev/sda3 as swap
For the rest, the system is up to date, no dandling *.pacnew, I never forced any package installation.
I didn't find a similar problem here or using Google.
The topic https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=158300 is not the same problem and it didn't help me.
    I have two simple questions:
    - what happened?
    - how can I know it will be safe again to reboot using the regular initrd image?
    Thanks for any clue.

Up, I see an update to linux-lts-3.0.68-1.
    Thanks!

  • Peoplesoft 9.2 Application and Tools 8.54 installation on Virtual Box Linux - Error

I am trying to install Peoplesoft Demo database for Tools 8.54 with Application Fin 9.2, when i run the database setup to creat the script i get a file called fin92dmoora.dms, my question is does this file contain all the tables neccesary for tools to work, since on my first install i got many errors and many tools tables were missing, i could not see any records in the application designer, and when i logged into from PIA there was a error saying, Contact your Administrator for security, looks like peoplecode was missing too from my list in the Application designer.
There were no errors when i ran the dms scripts to import table from fin92dmoora.dms.
Can someone please comment what am i doing wrong here.

It all depends of how you setup the database creation. If you installed a Financial Demo 9.2 database, everything should be installed, Peopletools and applications tables. If not, then you may have several issues.
The dms should have (at least) two import cmd, one for tools, one for appl and others for language if you selected it.
Furthermore, within PTools 8.54, you may choose which accessid, which psappsrv, which connectid you want to work with, and if you want to open it with specific password. Most often, VP1 is used for FSCM, especially for demo.
Lastly and not least, which Peopletools path version are you working on ? You may have a discrepency between your client PTools version (including psadmin) and the one from database, it could raise a lot of errors. Check the database table PSSTATUS and compare with your client (including psadmin), both should be aligned. Check also the APPSRV.LOG file, you probably can find more informations about your errors.
    Nicolas.

  • Virtual Box vboxdrv error loading from rc.conf

As the guide says about VirtualBox PUEL installation:
made the package, added to group, added vboxdrv to rc.conf, run /sbin/vbox_build_module
Now rc.conf wont load in start the vbodrv says no such module in /etc/rc.d/
    And VirtualBox says:
VirtualBox kernel driver not installed. The vboxdrv kernel module was either not loaded or /dev/vboxdrv was not created for some reason. Re-setup the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root.
    VBox status code: -1908 (VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED).
    Result Code:
    0x80004005
    Component:
    Console
    Interface:
    IConsole {1dea5c4b-0753-4193-b909-22330f64ec45}
When trying to start a Virtual Machine.
If I give modprobe vboxdrv the driver is loaded and everything is running smouthly.
Why happens that? I see no module in /etc/rc.d with name vboxdrv. How can modprobe works? It is looking in other folders 4 vboxdrv?

Thats what I did and it worked. But I want the driver to be loaded automaticaly in system start.
The question is why its no working by putting in rc.conf the vboxdrv?
My opinion: Its not loaded automatically cause it cant find it in /etc/rc.d which is the folder where the module section in rc.conf looks in. Where it is so I can copy or do symlink to /etc/rc.d search didnt helped.
    Thanks anyway

  • /dev/sda1 doesn't exist

    Hello,
Whenever I try to mount my flash drive I use this command:
    #mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb
For some reason, it says now that /dev/sda1 doesn't exist.
I think my flash drive itself is dead but it's not inserted when the computer starts so I don't know why the device isn't in /dev.
I'm currently at school so I can't give the exact error. Tell me if you need the output of any command.

I do have other things in the usb ports. They're a brother printer and a wireless mouse piece. Here is the output of dmesg:

  • Dev-sda1.device

    Hello arch users,
I'm currently trying to improve performance on my netbook that runs arch linux.
Today I installed a custom kernel (optimized for Atom processor) and rebuilt the initramfs and I'm pretty satisfied with my boot speed.
Still there is this 'dev-sda1.device' thing in my 'systemd-analyze blame':
    4.699s dev-sda1.device
    1.926s systemd-journald.service
    1.765s systemd-vconsole-setup.service
    963ms systemd-tmpfiles-setup-dev.service
    962ms systemd-journal-flush.service
    844ms lightdm.service
    697ms systemd-udevd.service
    457ms tmp.mount
    440ms udisks2.service
    416ms sys-kernel-debug.mount
    372ms systemd-remount-fs.service
    359ms [email protected]
    323ms sys-kernel-config.mount
    318ms systemd-sysctl.service
    318ms dev-mqueue.mount
    316ms dev-hugepages.mount
    301ms systemd-udev-trigger.service
    294ms polkit.service
    234ms systemd-random-seed.service
    145ms systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video0.service
    144ms [email protected]
    139ms home.mount
    126ms systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service
    122ms kmod-static-nodes.service
This seems to be very time consuming. What is 'dev-sda1.device'? I tried "find . -name 'dev-sda1.device'" with no results and I searched Google...
Is it just a "virtual" name for the process which mounts /dev/sda1? (which is my / partition by the way, where /dev/sda is a HDD)
And why does it take "this long"? I would like to improve everything I can

    From 'man systemd.device':
systemd will dynamically create device units for all kernel devices that are marked with the "systemd" udev tag
(by default all block and network devices, and a few others)
These units are not present on the file system.
    4.699s dev-sda1.device
I think that this time includes the fsck running time, which depends on the partition size.
On my machine, where sda3 is my root partition, I get:
    $ systemd-analyze blame|grep device
    3.647s dev-sda3.device
    $ systemctl status dev-sda3.device
    ● dev-sda3.device - Hitachi_HDP725050GLA360 3

    avril 29 10:19:19 arch64 kernel: EXT4-fs (sda3): re-mounted. Opts: (null)
Since the '10:19:18' boot time to the '10:19:21' 'dev-sda3.device' activation time there is the 3.647s lapse.
The journal shows that the 'systemd-fsck[130]: /dev/sda3' is included.
Maybe preventing the fsck on this partition might reduce the activation time of your 'dev-sda1.device'.
    But is 4.7s so long?

  • ERROR installing MAC OSX onto my W510 Mint 9 Virtual Box.....

    Hi all,
Im running Linux Mint 9 & trying to install osx 10.6.3 via latest virtual box. (for viewing purposes only!!)  Ive tried it with Empire EFI, iBoot and Legacy boot cd.
All settings in VB are as tutorials that are out there on the web so im pretty sure my settings are ok. Once one of the above bootable discs loads it asks me to replace the disc with the msc os dvd (retail) and then press F5
So i wait for the osx disc to mount, wait for about 1-2 minutes (as advised),  press F5 and the disc starts spinning for about a second then stops.  The following error then comes up on the Virtual screen window:
    Block 0x18a96a sectors 0
this continues to scroll down the page then nothing. Im pretty much useless at pc's and i only use them for wmy work (CAD) Ive been getting help from a guy who is trying to step by step me through the installation process, he has installed it but running Ubuntu.
Here is the link to our blog he has created on his web page. (which i have to say a big thanks you to him for)
    Moderator edit; Link removed
So can anyone suggest why the disc is not loading from the DVD drive? possibly a simple setting on my w510?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

  • Installing ArchLinx+Guest Additions in Virtual Box(error during guest)

The Arch Linux install seemed to go through smoothly.  I installed it using the wiki page, rebooted, and logged in as root.  I am installing this for a class, so trying to follow the instructions to do so.  Next, we are supposed to install 'Guest Additions' for Virtual box using the instructions below:
Now, you should install "Guest Additions" for VirtualBox. Guest additions allows you to share files between host and guest systems. This is very convenient for development as you will need to copy files back and forth between the host and guest operating systems. You can download Guest Additions at *link*.
You need to start the virtual machine before you can continue installing Guest Additions. To do that, just select your VM name from the list on the left hand side in VirtualBox and click Start. After logging into Arch Linux, you should mount this ISO image just as you had mounted the Arch Linux ISO file. You can then mount the cdrom inside the Guest OS by doing:
    mkdir /mnt/cdrom
    mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom
Now install the guest additions by doing:
    cd /mnt/cdrom
    sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run
This will compile and install the kernel modules necessary for Guest Additions functionality. Please note that if you
recompile your own kernel (later as a part of project requirements), you will have to run this again so that the modules are
compiled and installed for the new kernel too.
Under settings for VBox, I mounted the Guest Additions image file, started Arch Linux, logged in as root, and followed the instructions above.  I was able to do all of the above, but when I excute the last line, I am given this message:
    http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/3971/linuxd.png
I have no idea where to go from here, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also,  I feel like I have installed Arch Linux incorrectly.  All the videos and pictures I see show a GUI type interface, but all I am presented with is a text-based interface.  When I boot it up, it asks me to log in, and I am then taken to the command line, but I don't see the same GUI interface everyone else seems to have.  Is this normal for a basic Arch Linux install?  Thanks in advance.

Arch has no GUI until you install one. Some people don't want a GUI, so it's left to the user. The base install has only a command line interface.
You should probably read the Beginners Guide.
In case you missed them, there's two short articles, also on the wiki that might help you understand Arch, Arch Linux and The Arch Way

  • Error installing virtual box guest additons

On my windows 7 laptop I have virtual box 4.0 . I installed Oracle enterprise linux 5.5 and i want to make a shared folder . When i run VBoxLinuxAdditions.run I get the folowing :
"Your system does not seem to be set up to build kernel modules . If the following module compilation fails then this could be the reason .
The missing package can be probably installed with yum install kernel-devel-2.6.18-195.el5"
After this it invite me to see the content of file /var/log/vboxadd-install.log . In this log it tell me it can not find the kernel sources .
What can I do? I must download anothr version of Oracle enterprise linux? wihich one?
    Many thanks,
    Aurel

    Hello,
I configured the yum tool (as I find out on http://public-yum.oracle.com/) and I run yum install kernel-devel . After that I run sh /media/VBOXADDITIONS_4.0.0_69151/VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
The process of building kernel modules for Virtual Box additions is ending in error - it doesn't know about gcc tool. In what package there is this tool?
    Thank you,

  • Virtual Box Error

I have been trying to import solaris 11 on VM virtual box and this i have successfully completed. But while trying to open the solaris OS, i got the error message that "VT-x/AMD-V hardware accelerator is not avilable on your system. Your 64-bit guest will fail to detect a 64-bit CPU and will not be able to boot". Can someone please tell me what this error is actually saying and how to overcome it.
    Thanks.

    /dev/dsk/c1d0p2 WIN95 Extended(LBA)
    /dev/dsk/c1d0p5 IFS: NTFS
    /dev/dsk/c1d0p6 IFS: NTFS
    */dev/dsk/c1d0p7 WIN95 FAT32(Upto 2047GB)*
in bold is the partition that I want mount.
dir that I want mount in:
    # pwd
    /mnt/windows
    # mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c1d0p7 /mnt/windows
mount: /dev/dsk/c1d0p7 is already mounted or /mnt/windows is busy
/dev/dsk/c1d0p7 is not mounted, when I navigate to mnt/windows it is void..
    what is wrong?
    thanks to all...

Well, you can't stand in the directory you are trying to mount, if you stand in '/mnt/windows' you will not be able to mount anything over it. (thats what 'busy' means in this context).
Basically your pwd can be anything except the mountpoint.
Hence, try a 'cd /' first, then try again.

  • Root filesystem errors, Arch mounts it as RO, unusable system

I dunno why, but since a little why Arch stopped working because it just stops the initscripts where it checks for filesystems.
I'm getting at the beginning of initscripts this:
    "Using static /dev filesystem"
Then it goes into maintenance mode after the Filesystem Check, asking for my root password, with the root filesystem mounted read-only, then it asks me to fsck it and change the superblock, however I can't do this because /dev/sda1 (my root FS) doesn't exists.
    What should I do?
    Thanks in advance

    1. when you start it will say filesystem check error and ask if you want to fix it type in your root password and press enter
    2. type mount -o -n remount,rw / and press enter
    3. type pacman -S initscripts and press enter
    4. type cp /etc/rc.local.shutdown.pacsave /etc/rc.local.shutdown press enter
    5. type cp /etc/rc.local.pacsave /etc/rc.local press enter
    6. type cp /etc/rc.conf.pacsave /etc/rc.conf press enter
    7. type cp /etc/inittab.pacsave /etc/inittab
    8. type reboot and press enter and you should be able to boot into your filesystem
if you pacman tells you that it cant find initscripts then download the package from here:
    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/testing/os/i686 … pkg.tar.gz
and put it on a usb drive and mount it from inside another linux for example a ubuntu live cd
then mount your arch root aswell and copy the initscripts-2008.02-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz to mountpoint/root/
then go back and go from step 3 but with pacman -U initscripts-2008.02-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz

I am trying to mount an ocfs2 file system. The file system seems to have been created fine but I get an error message when I try to mount it. Here's what I get :

The same thing happens going through the ocfs2console.
