Dev-sda1.device
Hello arch users,
I'm currently trying to improve performance on my netbook that runs arch linux.
Today I installed a custom kernel (optimized for Atom processor) and rebuilt the initramfs and I'm pretty satisfied with my boot speed.
Still there is this 'dev-sda1.device' thing in my 'systemd-analyze blame':
4.699s dev-sda1.device
1.926s systemd-journald.service
1.765s systemd-vconsole-setup.service
963ms systemd-tmpfiles-setup-dev.service
962ms systemd-journal-flush.service
844ms lightdm.service
697ms systemd-udevd.service
457ms tmp.mount
440ms udisks2.service
416ms sys-kernel-debug.mount
372ms systemd-remount-fs.service
359ms [email protected]
323ms sys-kernel-config.mount
318ms systemd-sysctl.service
318ms dev-mqueue.mount
316ms dev-hugepages.mount
301ms systemd-udev-trigger.service
294ms polkit.service
234ms systemd-random-seed.service
145ms systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video0.service
144ms [email protected]
139ms home.mount
126ms systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service
122ms kmod-static-nodes.service
This seems to be very time consuming. What is 'dev-sda1.device'? I tried "find . -name 'dev-sda1.device'" with no results and I searched Google...
Is it just a "virtual" name for the process which mounts /dev/sda1? (which is my / partition by the way, where /dev/sda is a HDD)
And why does it take "this long"? I would like to improve everything I can
From 'man systemd.device':
systemd will dynamically create device units for all kernel devices that are marked with the "systemd" udev tag
(by default all block and network devices, and a few others)
These units are not present on the file system.
4.699s dev-sda1.device
I think that this time includes the fsck running time, which depends on the partition size.
On my machine, where sda3 is my root partition, I get:
$ systemd-analyze blame|grep device
3.647s dev-sda3.device
$ systemctl status dev-sda3.device
● dev-sda3.device - Hitachi_HDP725050GLA360 3
Follow: unit currently follows state of sys-devices-pci0000:00-0000:00:0e.0-ata1-host0-target0:0:0-0:0:0:0-block-sda-sda3.device

Since the '10:19:18' boot time to the '10:19:21' 'dev-sda3.device' activation time there is the 3.647s lapse.
The journal shows that the 'systemd-fsck[130]: /dev/sda3' is included.
Maybe preventing the fsck on this partition might reduce the activation time of your 'dev-sda1.device'.
But is 4.7s so long?

[SOLVED] Slow "dev-sda2.device" at boot...
First of all, hello everyone. This is my first post on Arch Linux forums, so don't hesitate to correct me if I am doing something wrong.
I have been trying to reduce the boot time on my HDD;
-Using readahead
-Quiet boot
I have managed to reduce the boot time dramatically, but there is a problem, which is a task on boot called dev-sda2.device and it takes more than 6 seconds
systemd-analyze

As you can see, dev-sda2.device takes too long and I have no idea what it is. I have been searching it for two days, and found only one topic here, which didn't help me, so I am posting this topic.
-I updated my system today.
-UEFI
-Gummiboot
I know that 17 seconds is a very fast boot, but I want to make it faster. Why not if I can?
Thanks...
EDIT: Updating the system again fixed this.
Last edited by atahanacar (2015-05-19 10:35:31)What file system are you using, and what is the mount point for /dev/sda2?
there could be some mount options depending on your filesystem, that could slow down/speed up mounting.
depending on mount point, using x-systemd.automount option could help.
I actually have similar issue where mounting of my /home on btrfs takes 6-7s of my 18s boot time and I haven't found a solution. Most of the time I just suspend/hibernate my laptop anyway, so it's not such a big issue for myself. -
Root device /dev/sda1 doesn't exist
I got something like this when I booted today (at the stage of initializing kernel):
Root device '/dev/sda1' doesn't exist, attempting to create it
ERROR: Failed to parse block device ids
ERROR: Unable to detect or create root device'
I did try the normal kernel (I currently use kernel26-ice), but haven't tried those xen0 and selinux kernels though. Also I tried changing /dev/sda1 to hda1 in menu.lst and fstab, but no luck .
E: Will try this one once I have time: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … .27t_exist
Other help is still of course greatly appreciated .
Last edited by algorythm (2009-10-11 11:21:56)Yeah, thanks but I even used rootdelay=90 by then.
The problem turned out to be that I didn't have the "sata" or "filesystems" hook on my (/etc/)mkinitcpio.conf, so it wouldn't have been possible to recognize any other partitions or any filesystems either (at least with my machine).
So how I booted correctly (with the first time btw) was that I booted the -fallback kernel that DOES have (all) the hook(s) I needed in the kernel26(-ice)-fallback.img.
So I had these hooks before this:
base udev fbsplash autodetect pata scsi sata uresume filesystems
During this:
base udev uresume
And now after this:
base udev sata uresume filesystems
Cheers!

No /dev/sda1 for flash drive w/custom kernel [solved]
I think I may have made an error selecting the right drivers for my kernel or something. When I put my flash drive in with the official arch kernel, /dev/sda1 is created. However, when I put my flash drive in with my custom kernel, it does not. The weird thing is when I do a tail /var/log/messages.log, it gives me this:

I have usb-storage and scsi emulation built into the kernel if that helps.

I will be more than happy to provide any more info that you may need. This has bothered me for a while, so any help would be much appreciated! Thanks for the reply penguin!
I tried adding it to the kernel, but it did not work. I think usb_hid is just for usb keyboards/mouses/etc.
I noticed that every time I remove and plugin my flash drive /var/log/messages.log says something slightly different for my flash drive if that helps:

[solved] fdisk alignment not sticking on /dev/sda1
Hey everyone.
There are several statements that SSDs should be properly aligned.
So i went ahead and aligned my Intel X25-M following this guide on the OCZ forums.
After partitioning the SSD with fdisk using proper alignment, i confirmed via 'fdisk -l' and 'fdisk -lu' that the alignment is correct.
My next step was installing Windows Vista X86_X64, where AS Benchmark again confirmed a proper alignment (128 K as suggested by Theodore Ts'o or 512 K, as suggested in the guide linked above, i tried both).
However, when i checked with fdisk again to confirm the alignment once more, the alignment for /dev/sda1 seems to have shifted. I also get the message, that partition 2 doesn't end on a cylinder boundary.
Right now, it should be 32 heads and 32 sectors per track to result in a 512 K alignment. But fdisk shows 255 heads and 63 sectors/track for /dev/sda1, which is, from what i understand, the standard used by linux. The other partitions seem to be just fine.
I've read that there might be an issue with partition 1 shifting but i also heard it could by avoided by starting partition 1 on cylinder 2 instead of cylinder 1. Unfortunately, that doesn't change anything for me.
Can anyone tell me what i did wrong?
Regards,
demian

Also, remember to adjust the offset of all the logical partitions in expert mode. Otherwise they'd start sector 32 as you can see in the bottom code tags in my first post.
For example, here's my current installation:

Virtual Box error: error mounting /dev/sda1 on /mnt
Hello folks,
After getting fed up with Ubuntu's bloated setup, I was trying to switch to Arch linux. But before that I wanted to try it in Virtual Box. I was using Arch Linux Core image for this. But after setting up file system and mountpoint I am getting this error:
error mounting /dev/sda1 on /mnt
The steps I followed:
1. Source: Core local
2. Editor: Nano
3. Clock: As usual
4. Prepare hard drive:
a) Manually Partition (as this is what I will be doing during actual installation)
b) /dev/sda
c) New partition on all space available on virtual machine, making it primary, bootable, Type: Linux Extended (option 85).
d) Write partition and Quit and Done
5. Manually configure block device, filesystems and mountpoints.
a) dev
b) Do not recreate file system.
c) Set ext4 format and mount point, ignoring swap space or seperate /boot partition.
d) Now when I goto next step as Done, It gives an error : Error mounting /dev/sda1 on /mnt/.
Is there any problem with creating the filesystem as I have done? Can anyone shed some light if there is any particular configuration needed for virtual machine. I searched the forum for other options. But none of them seem applicable for me.
Thank you for your time. What host os and CPU are you using? The message states that you need virtualization hardware support in the CPU (Intel VT-x or AMD-V) in order to run that 64 bit guets OS. Reasons for this error (that I could think of) could be:
- you have a very old cpu
- you have disabled virtualization in your bios
- you are running a 32-bit host os

[SOLVED] dev-sda3.device timed out
Hi all!
First of all, I want to tell you, that I'm pretty new to Arch and I'm loving it.
But there is one problem that occurs, sometimes when I'm booting into
Arch. And this is really driving me nuts. I've searched around on google
and on this great forum, but I didn't find any similar topic.
I enabled the output of systemd while booting and it starts freezing
when it comes to the fsck of the device dev/sda3. The last point
the output shows is, that it reached the target swap.
I tried to figure out what's next point in the boot order and I'm pretty
sure that there is an issue with the sda3 partition. But the point
I really don't understand is, that sometimes the system boots without
an incidence.
I'm not so sure which logs you guys want to see and I don't want to spam
with irrelevant logs. Even if i nearly exclude it as an Error, i'll post the fstab:
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
/dev/sdb1 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
/dev/sdb3 /home ext4 defaults,noatime 0 2
UUID=ce5d83e9-1e2e-47e2-9077-f19a9dd7f1c7 none swap defaults 0 0
Thanks for all responses or ideas

And the other command bohoomil suggested:
bohoomil wrote:systemctl --status failed.service
doesn't work, because it's an unkown option. Also
systemctl status failed.service
gives an error : No such file or directory.
Thanks for any further help, you guys are great

/dev/sda1 doesn't exist
Hello,
Whenever I try to mount my flash drive I use this command:
#mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb
For some reason, it says now that /dev/sda1 doesn't exist.
I think my flash drive itself is dead but it's not inserted when the computer starts so I don't know why the device isn't in /dev.
I'm currently at school so I can't give the exact error. Tell me if you need the output of any command.I do have other things in the usb ports. They're a brother printer and a wireless mouse piece. Here is the output of dmesg:

Nilfs-clean: No cleaner found on /dev/sda1.
I'm using nilfs2 for my root file system. It seems as if mount.nilfs2 manages to start a cleanerd, because "ps" shows this:
[root@robot1 /]# ps alx | grep ni[l]
1 0 222 2 20 0 0 0 nilfs_ S ? 0:03 [segctord]
4 0 223 1 20 0 14692 864 wq_sle Ss ? 0:00 /sbin/nilfs_cleanerd -n /dev/sda1 /
[root@robot1 /]# nilfs-clean /dev/sda1
No cleaner found on /dev/sda1.
[root@robot1 /]#
However, as you can see, trying to clean the /dev/sda1 volume doesn't work.
If, however, I manually start nilfs_cleanerd, then I can clean the volume:
[root@robot1 /]# /sbin/nilfs_cleanerd
[root@robot1 /]# nilfs-clean /dev/sda1
[root@robot1 /]#
I'd like to understand why the nilfs-clean utility doesn't think that the running, auto-launched nilfs_cleanerd is suitable for cleaning the device.
I have another post in the server config forum about systemctl for starting a nilfs_cleanerd; that's not what this question is about. This question is specifically: Why doesn't nilfs-clean find the running, seemingly auto-started, nilfs_cleanerd instance?Nobody knows about nilfs2 or how to diagnose this problem?

Conflicting advice with zpools and the use of /dev/did devices with HASP
I've read that you should not use /dev/did devices with zpools/HAStoragePlus resources, and I've also read that you can.
From the EIS checklist (we're a Sun partner):
•
It's recommended to use cXtXdX devices for ZFS.
• Do not use did devices!
On the other hand, the Sun doco states that you can (http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-2974/gbspx?a=view):
you can create a zpool using a disk slice by specifying a Solaris device identifier:
# zpool create HAzpool c1t8d0s2
or or you can create a zpool using disk slice by specifying a logical device identifier
# zpool create HAzpool /dev/did/dsk/d3s2
Can someone tell me which is correct?
I've configured zpools under HASP using did devices, gone through many failover tests and have had no issues at all.
James.Hey, that screwed up my nice formatting... it looked way better in the editor before I posted!

Placing root filesystem on /dev/sda1/FOLDER [SOLVED]
Is it possible for me to place a root filesystem inside a folder on a partition? If so, what would the menu.lst line look like to boot the thing?
Example:
On /dev/sda1 I'd like to have:
/archi686
/arch_x86_64
Last edited by graysky (2011-10-14 23:02:57)Sounds like you want btrfs's subvolumes. This would be extremely awkward with any other filesystem and would require hacking on mkinitcpio.

Opening device /dev/sg3 failed - access denied to /dev/sg* device file
Opening device /dev/sg3 failed - access denied to /dev/sg* device file (OB scsi device driver)
Got this message when running an automated RMAN job.
To my knowledge the only thing that has changed since being able to run RMAN jobs with OSB and not being able to run them is that the permissions on /usr/tmp were changed from drwxr-xr-x, not drwxrwxrwx.

[solved] systemd times out waiting for dev-null.device on encrypted fs
I have a relatively new install of Arch on my laptop. The relevant sections of the drive setup are a luks encrypted root device (with associated unencrypted /boot), and a large ntfs device encrypted with truecrypt. That contains my home directory, which is shared with the Windows 8 dual-boot on the machine.
I have all this mounted on boot, so my typical usage is to enter my password for the encrypted root, followed by the password for the truecrypt-encrypted data drive, then normal login.
This has been working fine for a couple of weeks. This afternoon I rebooted my machine from Windows to Linux, at which point the secondary encrypted drive failed to mount. The root device mounts fine.
On further examination, in the form of journalctl -xb, I'm getting the following errors after mounting the encrypted root device:
Feb 12 21:29:54 kafka systemd[1]: Job dev-null.device/start timed out.
Feb 12 21:29:54 kafka systemd[1]: Timed out waiting for device dev-null.device.
-- Subject: Unit dev-null.device has failed
-- Defined-By: systemd
-- Support: http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/li … temd-devel
-- Documentation: http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Softwar … e9d022f03d
-- Unit dev-null.device has failed.
-- The result is timeout.
Feb 12 21:29:54 kafka systemd[1]: Dependency failed for Cryptography Setup for cryptdata.
-- Subject: Unit [email protected] has failed
-- Defined-By: systemd
-- Support: http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/li … temd-devel
-- Documentation: http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Softwar … e9d022f03d
-- Unit [email protected] has failed.
As my root home directory is on the root filesystem, I can still log in as root. If I try to mount or unmount the truecrypt device (located at /data) the command hangs. After removing "auto,x-systemd.automount" from that device from /etc/fstab and rebooting, I have a significant delay at boot, but I can then mount the /data device as normal.
I can't find anything related to this either here or on Google. Any ideas?

Thanks for the warning. Sadly, as there are applications I need for work that only run in Windows, I need to dual boot this machine with Windows 8.1. This is the best option I can find for sharing my home directory, which is also a necessity due to the amount of data I have to share between the systems. I would much rather trust to ntfs-3g-ar and its UserMapping (and all the fiddling with ACLs that I had to do) than to the Windows ext2 drivers I can find. They all seem to be several years out of date. Linux is much better at talking NTFS than Windows is at talking EXT. (To be honest, I'm actually quite impressed with Windows 8 since the upgrade to 8.1. As a long term Arch user and a fan of tiling window managers it's interesting to see Windows moving in the right direction. )
With 'permissions' in the /etc/fstab and the .NTFS-3G/UserMapping file in place it works almost seamlessly. (It took a lot of tinkering with ACLs in Windows and Linux, but it's working very well now. One tip that I'll write here in case it's of use is that you want the last line of the UserMapping file to be a 'generic' mapping. When I didn't have that there were very strange things going on.)
The only two minor problems I have now are:
1) A few applications don't like FUSE filesystems. Steam worked for a while and then broke; reinstalling it failed at every stage. When I checked, it seems that FUSE is a known problem for Steam. (I don't think it's restricted to NTFS.) My response to that was to create /home/.local/$HOME on my root (ext4) filesystem and symlink out to it for troublesome applications.
2) There are a few characters for filenames that Windows doesn't like, making those files inaccessible in Windows. (Colons are the major culprit.) They're usually quite easily renamed. (The exception being my .maildir folder, which I have had to duplicate natively in cygwin.)
Neither of these are anything more than minor niggles. I appreciate the warning, though.
Having said that, if you have an alternative that lets me share a truecrypt-encrypted drive between Linux and Windows that is better than the NTFS-3G approach, I'd love to hear it for future reference. -

Error: Waiting for /dev/sda1 for 10 seconds...
Hi,
I upgraded this morning to the following:
- mkinitcpio 0.13.0-1
- linux-lts 3.0.67-1
Now the server won't reboot, it always says "Waiting for /dev/sda1 for 10 seconds..." in the initramfs shell.
Indeed there is no /dev/sd* in /dev, or even /dev/disk-by* to try and boot using the UUID.
Since it's a remote server, it's hard to debug. Hopefully no critical service is running on it.
The default linux 3.7.9-2 gives the same error.
I managed to get it back on line using the fallback initrd: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … onger_boot
I also tried to reinstall udev,linux-lts, systemd and mkinitcpio as advised but the /dev/sda1 error was still there.
My mkinitcpio.conf:
MODULES=""
BINARIES=""
FILES=""
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems keyboard fsck"
# no compression
Nothing fancy, no RAID, no LVM, not even /boot on a separate partition:
- /dev/sda1 on /
- /dev/sda2 on /home
- /dev/sda3 as swap
For the rest, the system is up to date, no dandling *.pacnew, I never forced any package installation.
I didn't find a similar problem here or using Google.
The topic https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=158300 is not the same problem and it didn't help me.
I have two simple questions:
- what happened?
- how can I know it will be safe again to reboot using the regular initrd image?
Thanks for any clue.Up, I see an update to linux-lts-3.0.68-1.
Thanks!
