Virtual box module buid failed on custom kernel

I built a custom 2.6.32-rc6 kernel and I am trying to build vboxdrv moduodele.
But vbox_build_module is failing with the following error

As mentioned there I dont have this Makefile /usr/src/linux-2.6.32-rc6/arch/x86/Makefile . But there is a Make file in /usr/src/linux-2.6.32-rc6/. I symlink it but the process now freezed my laptop and I can see some warning messages printed all over konsole.

I have installed kernel26-headers and this problem has gone. Sorry for my english

  • Makepkg fails on custom kernel.

    Hi.
I'm trying to compile the arch kernel with a few added patches to increase battery life.
What I have done is: Installed abs, and ran ABS as root. Then I made a directory called kernel, copied the kernel26 from ABS to that directory (so kernel had a subdirectory called kernel26).
Then I ran this script (changed the name to mine) in the kernel (not kernel26) folder, which created a new kernel26-gigamo folder.
What I did next was copy these four patches to that directory, and added them in to the pkgbuild:
    avoid-overflows-in-kernel-timec.patch
    clockevent-simplify-list-operations.patch
    uvesafb-small-cleanups.patch
    writeback-speed-up-writeback-of-big-dirty-files.patch
    (they come from here)

I removed the src/ directory and ran makepkg and it succeeded. Pacman -U kernel.pkg.tar.gz also worked. Now all that's left is rebooting and trying.
    Thanks everyone.
OK, I guess it's not over yet. I rebooted in the new kernel, but it says it can't find /dev/sda3 (which is my / partition).
    This is my grub entry:
    title Arch Linux Gigamo
    root (hd0,2)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro
    initrd /boot/kernel26-gigamo.img
Okay well, I didnt realise there was a vmlinux26-gigamo as well. Will see if that fixes it.

  • [SOLVED] Virtual Box Install Question

I have been working through the Arch Linux wiki regarding installing virtualbox.
I do not believe I have a custon kernel, as I would not know how to customize it, but here is my kernel info:
    Name : linux
    Version : 3.8.4-1
Description : The linux kernel and modules
    Architecture : x86_64
    URL : http://www.kernel.org/
    Licenses : GPL2
    Groups : base
    Provides : kernel26=3.8.4
    Depends On : coreutils linux-firmware kmod mkinitcpio>=0.7
Optional Deps : crda: to set the correct wireless channels of your
    country
    Required By : nvidia virtualbox-host-modules
    Optional For : None
    Conflicts With : kernel26
    Replaces : kernel26
    Installed Size : 64728.00 KiB
    Packager : Tobias Powalowski <[email protected]>
Build Date : Wed 20 Mar 2013 05:16:17 PM EDT
Install Date : Tue 02 Apr 2013 09:36:32 AM EDT
    Install Reason : Explicitly installed
    Install Script : Yes
    Validated By : Unknown
Following the wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox) I installed virtualbox and virtualbox-host-modules.
When I go to launch virtual box I get:
WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module
available for the current kernel (3.8.4-1-ARCH) or it failed toload. Please reinstall
the kernel module virtualbox-host-modules or if you don't use our stock kernel
compile the modules withsudo dkms autoinstallYou will not be able to start VMs
    until this problem is fixed.
After googling I have read that many people get this warning after a kernel update but in
my cause this is a fresh install.
I even followed the steps for a custom kernel and reveived the follow:
    input:
    dkms install vboxhost/$(pacman -Q virtualbox|awk {'print $2'}|sed 's/\-.\+//') -k $(uname -rm|sed 's/\ /\//')
    response:
    Error! echo
Your kernel headers for kernel 3.8.4-1-ARCH cannot be found at
    /usr/lib/modules/3.8.4-1-ARCH/build or /usr/lib/modules/3.8.4-1-ARCH/source.
Pretty much at a loss and any help would be appreciated.

So now my kernel is up to date:
    Name : linux
    Version : 3.8.6-1
Description : The linux kernel and modules
    Architecture : x86_64
    URL : http://www.kernel.org/
    Licenses : GPL2
    Groups : base
    Provides : kernel26=3.8.6
    Depends On : coreutils linux-firmware kmod mkinitcpio>=0.7
Optional Deps : crda: to set the correct wireless channels of your
    country
    Required By : nvidia virtualbox-host-modules
    Optional For : None
    Conflicts With : kernel26
    Replaces : kernel26
    Installed Size : 64354.00 KiB
    Packager : Tobias Powalowski <[email protected]>
Build Date : Sat 06 Apr 2013 01:32:32 AM EDT
Install Date : Sat 13 Apr 2013 10:36:09 AM EDT
    Install Reason : Explicitly installed
    Install Script : Yes
    Validated By : Signature
    and now I can run
    modprobe vboxdrv
and it seems to work, yet when I run VirtualBox, I still get:
WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module
available for the current kernel (3.8.4-1-ARCH) or it failed to
load. Please reinstall the kernel module virtualbox-host-modules or
if you don't use our stock kernel compile the modules with
    sudo dkms autoinstall
You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed
    Just tried removing virtualbox via
    pacman -Rns virtualbox
and reinstalling and it stills reads kernet as 3.8.4-1

  • Custom kernel thoughts?

so i managed to compile a 2.6.32-rc3 kernel yesterday with the zen patches. i actually spent 2 days compiling over and over again until it worked 100%. the only thing i have a problem with now is the virtual box module, but thats no biggie. but wow, once i started trimming it down, are teh compile times ever nice on my new phenom box. the final config was building inside of 3-4 minutes. this is my first functional custom kernel, all the ones i've done before, always seem to feel slower, or something ends up missing, or they just plain don't work
but my other concern, i'm not too sure how to rely on these geekbench results. i suppose maybe its possible?
this is before with the arch kernel, http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/168740
and after with my kernel, http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/175088
edit, to add score from arch 2.6.31 kernel. http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view?id=175199
my other question, i was wondering if anyone who knows this stuff better than I do may have any suggestions for my config, anything that may help performance, or if i have something in there that i don't need. do i need initrd, i was looking into that one, but i wasn't sure, what i read was that if i built in ext2 (boot fs), i could remove initrd. i didn't want to break anything though.

my other question, i had to enable the ide drivers. i have no IDE on my mobo. i was hoping to keep on sata and the related scsi drivers, but it wouldn't boot at all. i kept getting a kernel panic.....although in my mkinitio hooks, i only had sata, and now its pata and sata....i i removed the ide drivers, and set used scsi and sata hooks, any thoughts on whether it would work or not?

    @vit.
i have conky setup displaying my cpu speed. and with the phc-k8 driver it shows the cpu speed changing frequently. and the big thing with it as well i believe is that it can handle voltage, im not sure if the powernow module could do voltage or not though, but on my asus board using the atk0110 sensor module with phc-k8 when i check the sensors i can see voltage changes between the available steppings, and not just the -/+3-5%, i see 0.1v increments kind of thing.
edit// powernow_k8 can change voltages. i just booted into the arch kernel, and the voltages changed there....
i believe the other thing thats better with the phc-k8 module is that its supposed to be able to handle multiple steppings, as in more than 4, or that it clocks by multiplier. so where for my phenom 955, powernow can run it at 800, 2100, 2500 and 3200. but as far as my understanding goes, phc-k8 is supposed to be able to handle it by multiplier, but with the current cpufreq utils its still using the configuration from the previous module, and when i do cpu-freq info, i still get the same info. ivers maybe its the more cpu specific steppings it doesn't support yet with the k10. as far as i can tell right now, they both seem to work about the same. except i think the phc driver is supposed to be more flexible. to be honest, i think it seems to be a little more responsive, in terms of adjusting frequencies
here's something to show the voltage change according to frequency. from what i can find, default vcore for the 955 is 1.35v, im reading 1.38 at full speed, could be a give or take depending on bios/sensors/etc, it looks like its in line to me

i'm still looking for input from the more knowledgeable guys on my kernel config...unless its just that good as it is? i know i couldn't have done that well

  • Network Limited Conectivity & Virtual-Box

Just bought a new Dell Inspiron 3137 laptop, with 64-bit Windows 8.0 installed (not 8.1). I have four legacy 16-bit programs (Bible study, Sermon editor/reference, 2 games) that I need to use as cannot find more recent versions on the market.  So initially
tried to use MS Virtual-PC but it would not install, so then installed Virtual-Box followed by Win-Xp. The W8 OS now (after serious setup efforts) connects ok under Wi-Fi and Ethernet to the internet and to computers on my home network.  But Virtual-Box
and Xp fails! looking at my "Networks" W8 pop-up window I see an entry of "Unidentified Network" and that it has limited connectivity. Xp indicates "connected" but received packet count is 0.
Think this is a result of my attempts & connections under Virtual-Box.  I go to Network and Sharing Center and find first 2 category are enabled but  "All Networks" entry is disabled/off and I cannot find any way to enable! I go to
"Network Connections page and I see 6 entries (Bluetooth, Netgear router, broadband, Virtual-Box, etc). I run the troubleshooter on the Virtual-Box link and am informed that it cannot fix & no useful help provided to me by system!  No progress
w/ comparability mode on legacy programs.
I have initially informed Dell Technical support then most recently Oracle of this problem >>> both say it is not their product malfunctioning and that errors are in configuration of Windows-8 >> but no help.
This is serious irritation as have already wasted about 40 hours chasing/messing with this problem  >>>> NEED HELP AND SUGGESTIONS - PLEASE!
    Thanks .....

Thanks Kevin for the reply, but no progress here.  I am completely new to Windows 8.0 and slightly new to any networking, so keep that in mind should you decide to reply again,  A.K.A., I might need a bit of step-by-step assistance .....
The symptoms here : My new Dell computer finally now connects by wi-fi to home network, has always connected to internet. I am using Virtual-Box v4.12.18 w/ Xp Pro, SP-3. Under Xp in Network I note that it shows "Connected" but received packet
count is 0, sent packet count is hundreds. Looking within W8 at advanced settings, I see 3 network types, 1) Private = enabled, 2) Guest = enabled, 3) All = NOT enabled (and I can find no click, link or setting that
will enable). Have tried with Network Discovery on & off, and with File Sharing on & off, and with 56-bit & 128-bit encryption selected alternatively. So run the Troubleshooter = first pass informed
it could not fix problem : later, troubleshooter stated it fix some problem(s) with incoming connections = at that point I looked and found that under W8 both sent & received packet count was into low thousand but Xp still showed 0 receive.
When I look at Networks under W8 I see "Netgear52" W/ no errors, then see either "Unidentified Network (limited connectivity) OR randomly  see "VirtualBox (Limited Connectivity) and so think Netgear52 is what I should be using.
Again under W8 networking pages, I try "Setup Network - Chose Wireless Router" am asked for SSID (whatever?) but showing nothing after 10-minutes. Have made all efforts both with & without Firewall on Xp & I think on W8 also, no changes
to Security Essentials  Xp is in NAT mode and have not yet tried "Bridged."
    "ipconfig?"
Base system here are : Dell 3137 Inspiron laptop, Win 8.0 + Win-Xp Pro. Motorola Surfboard cable modem. Netgear52 router. Various home networked Eithernet connected computers. Various Tablet & eBook readers connected Wi-Fi. No other component is
reporting any errors and all work Ok.  Xp is Ok except zero connectivity to Internet and home network.  Need to get Xp connected so can access data for legacy programs off home & church networks.
So your help seriously appreciated!    Bill

  • Ndiswrapper module fails to load on custom kernel

Hello All, I just compiled my custom kernel, which boots successfully (yay! after at least 10 hours of constant compiling..), however, the ndiswrapper module does not load. I'm wondering, if there's any shortcut to it without using abs to makepkg another version of it for my kernel.
I have tried to compile the kernel26 (vanilla arch kernel, replacing my default kernel), and changed the pkgrel number from 3 to 4, but this time, the ndiswrapper module still failed to load, the error message was that the format of the kernel module was different.
I have also tried to remove the package ndiswrapper, and reinstalling it through pacman, but that didn't work out either. The problem still persists.
Similar problem also applies to my fglrx kernel module. Any advice is appreciated.

ndiswrapper needs to be built against the new kernel. Use abs to do that and reinstall your new package via pacman.

  • [Solved] glibc-Update-fail and broken system when using custom kernel

I had a similar issue with the glibc-update as described in several threads.
I guess, the reason why I ran into the problem was that I'm using a custom-built kernel. So the kernel modules (drivers etc.) under /lib/modules/custom-kernel/ are owned by no pacman package.
At my system, after upgrating via
    # pacman -Syu --ignore glibc
    # pacman -Su
The upgrade failed and  /lib/modules/ and the files, owned by the glibc-package remained at the still existing directory /lib.
Rebooting the computer in this situation causes a sytem freeze.
Now, here is my sucessful repair, briefly described. Maybe it will help someone:
    1. Booting the computer with the Arch Linux net Install image
    2. mounting my root partition manually at /mnt
    3. performing the following commands:
    # cd /mnt
    # cp -ar lib/* usr/lib/
    # rm -rf lib
    # ln -s usr/lib lib
    7. removing net install image and rebooting the computer
==> the system works again, but:
    # pacman -Su
    still produces error messages like:
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    glibc: /lib exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/lib/ld-2.16.so exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/lib/ld-linux.so.2 exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/lib/libBrokenLocale-2.16.so exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/lib/libBrokenLocale.so.1 exists in filesystem
Now at the last step I did is, what the wiki is seriosly discouraging from I use --force:
    # pacman -f -Su
After that my system was repaired
I think using force at that point is OK, because the files will only be replaced which are already moved to the right location.

If you use a custom-built kernel you should really package it up so you can easily avoid this sort of thing just by repackaging.

  • Arch in virtual box gives me i686 instead of x86_64-failed retrieving

    Hello,
I tried arch in virtual box and when I do uname -a it gives me i686 instead of x86_64.
So, trying to insert to repositories the multilib , it doesn't work (it gives me failed retrieving multilib).
    What can I do ?
    Thanks!
(I download the dual ISO file,is that right?)

You chose i686 when booting the install disk in the VM. If you want x86_64, start over and install that. Or just go with i686, you're probably fine.
When I boot ity only had i686 as option.
If your machine supports a 64 bit VM, did you configure it as such?
I don't know anything about that.
So, in hard drive I will not have this problem.
Edit:   BTW, welcome to Arch Linux
    Thanks!

  • [SOLVED] nVidia 87.76 Drivers installer fails to build kernel module

    Hey,
I have a nVidia GeForce2 Integrated graphics card on my Asus A7N266 motherboard. According to the nVidia site, http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html, the most recent driver that supports this is the 96.xx series. Yet as shown here, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=87332, many people have found that the 96.xx series drivers cause graphical corruption when using a GeForce2 IGP.
Before coming to Arch, I had used Xubuntu 7.04 and managed to compile the last known working drivers, version 87.76, following the instructions here: http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2007/03/25 … 20-12-386/
That all went well but now I'm using Arch. I tried using the nvidia-96.xx driver in the repos just for testing sake but I still got the same graphical corruption.
Thus I have been trying to install the 87.76 drivers on Arch, but it always fails at the kernel module building stage. I had first applied this patch here, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr … ost1086669, before compling as the plain driver wont compile against recent kernels.
Here is the output from the installer:

The name of the directory you placed the driver in contains spaces. That is  why you get the no rule to make target GLX error.
It would be better not to circumvent pacman. I am using the following PKGBUILDs for the 8776 driver:

  • [Solved] Catalyst fails to load kernel module

I have just been through the Catalyst install guide, I installed from the Vi0L0 repos rather than building myself.
    Everything appeared to go fine, however fglrx fails to load when I reboot. The xorg log contains;
fglrx(0): atiddxDriScreenInit failed. Probably kernel module missing or incompatible
    fglrx(0): **********************************************************
    fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed
fglrx(0): * kernel module (fglrx.ko) may be missing or incompatible
    fglrx(0): * 2D and 3D acceleration disabled
    fglrx(0): **********************************************************
Is this recoverable? Or does this mean that the current Vi0L0 module has not been built for my kernel (3.11.5-1-ARCH)?

This issue has now been resolved after the update to xorg 1.14
    lsmod | grep fglrx
shows fglrx is not loaded, and:
    modprobe fglrx
    returns with;
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'fglrx': Exec format error
Does that indicate a 32/64 bit issue?

  • Nvidia module for custom kernel

Hi all. I've compiled a custom kernel using abs according to the instructions on the wiki, but I'm having a hard time installing the nvidia module using the instructions on the Nvidia page of the wiki. The install always aborts complaining of not being able to find the kernel source. I do have the kernel-headers installed:
    [root@myhost greg]# pacman -Ss linux-headers
    core/linux-headers 3.1.5-1 [installed]
Header files and scripts for building modules for linux kernel
I've also edited the nvidia.install and PKGBUILD files to point to the correct version file:
    [greg@myhost ~]$ cat /lib/modules/3.1.5-1-test/extramodules/version
    3.1.5-1-test
I've really searched hard, but can find no remedy. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

From what I can see, the only installable package that was built is linux-test-3.1.5-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz. That's with the PKGBUILD file supplied from /var/abs/core/linux as per the wiki.

  • Cant find virtualbox vboxdrv (install vbox modules on custom kernel)

    hi guys!
i recently installed virtualbox-ose using pacman -Sy virtualbox. it installed fine and i was able to create a vm. when i start my vm i get this error:
VirtualBox kernel driver not installed. The vboxdrv kernel module was either not loaded or /dev/vboxdrv was not created for some reason. Re-setup the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root.
    VBox status code: -1908 (VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED).

    Interface:
    IConsole {d5a1cbda-f5d7-4824-9afe-d640c94c7dcf}
i could not find /etc/init.d/vboxdrv. when i do for a search for vboxdrv, it shows me a vobxdrv.ko and its located on my original arch kernel 2.6.25-ARCH. im using a custom kernel. how do i tell virtualbox to build the modules in my custom kernel and not on the arch kernel. i remember i had the same problem with ndiswrapper before that ndis wrapper built the ndiswrapper module on my arch kernel instead of my custom kernel. any ideas?
    thanks!

Im trying to rebuld the vbox modules for a custom kernel and I get this.

It says to specify the KERN DIR I searched on-line a some people said I should never have to do that. Will it solve my problem if I do? What do i specify it to?

I found out how to fix by editing the script  vbox_build_modules this is what mty script looks like if anyone wants it
    #!/bin/bash
echo "Building vboxdrv for `uname -sr`"
    cd "/opt/virtualbox/src"
    export KERN_DIR=/usr/src/linux-2.6.29.3-IX
make clean && make && make install

  • Virtual box xrandr - failed to change the screen configuration

I am using Arch as guest in the Virtual Box
xrandr -q says 36000x36000 is the maximum mode.
I want my screen to be of maximum mode 36000x36000 which will is needed in my project.
IN my xorg.conf I have added the mode 36000x36000 but when I try
    xrandr -q it shows 36000x36000
but when I try xrandr -s 36000x36000 it says
failed to change the screen configuration

do you have enough video memory allocated to the virtualbox?  i'm guessing it would take a lot of video ram to produce such a high resolution.

  • Custom kernel manually compile nvidia module

I have a working custom kernel. Now when i compile the standard NVIDIA....run package the compilation begins. However when i first extract the nvidia package to a source dir and try from then on to compile i get an error message saying i haven't compiled a kernel or can't find the kernel headers.
Any hint about what i could do next?

    eval "package_${_p}() {

I downloaded the 3.8.2 vanilla kernel and patched it with grsecurity. The kernel install was traditional make && make modules_install ....
Are header files required when you have a full source tree btw?
