Virtualbox_bin AUR vs. Archlinuxfr (solved)

I have a problem when upgrading virtualbox_bin. There are two version, one is in the archlinuxfr repository and tends to be outdated most of the time. Then there is virtualbox_bin in AUR that is updated almost instantly when a new version comes out. I use the version from AUR, but pacman keeps complaining about the installed version being newer than that in the repo. Another downside is that when using yaourt, the package is not listed as installed from AUR and thus doesn't get updated when the AUR package does.
What I would like is to have the latest version available (regardless whether from AUR or archlinuxfr) when I do a yaourt -Syu --aur. Any ideas?

ok I did a paclist archlinuxfr and found out, that I had only a few packages installed from there, most of which were on AUR in the same version anyway. The only one that wasn't on AUR was firebrand. I did install firefox-branded from AUR though. Thank you for the idea that should have been mine:cool:

  • Downgrade virtualbox from archlinuxfr[SOLVED]

    i upgraded virtualbox today from virtualbox 2.2.2-1 to virtualbox 2.2.4-1 from the archlinuxfr repo.
    This version is crashing constantly on my system.
    I tried to downgrade from the /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ dir with the "pacman -U virtualbox_bin-2.2.2-1.pkg.tar.bz2" command but no luck, it keeps telling me:
    loading package data...
    error: 'virtualbox_bin-2.2.2-1.pkg.tar.bz2': cannot open package file
    How can i downgrade this package from my cache?
    if i try to bunzip2 the package first it tells me
    bunzip2: virtualbox_bin-2.2.2-1.pkg.tar.bz2 is not a bzip2 file.
    so that won't be the solution.
    can somebody help me with this?
    Thanks

    Me thinks you may have a wrong name (seeing it is also not recognized as a bzip).
    Try a 'tar tvzf virtualbox_bin-2.2.2-1.pkg.tar.bz2' ...
    No the packages for virtualbox from archlinuxfr are named .bz2 at the end.
    And yes your tip helped me thanks , it are tape archive's(.tar) strange why do the call it .bz2 then?
    after a reboot it worked, strange !!!!

  • Search AUR when offline [Solved]

    Hey guys, is there a way to search for packages in the AUR db,
    when not connected to the net.
    As can be done by the other repositories.

    So, i guess there is no other way to search aur, than to be online.
    Thanks people.
    Of course there's no way to search for packages when the AUR is offline. It's offline, not much you can do.
    You could create a cron job though. Have some sort of program or shell script parse output from an AUR helper that allows searching (aur-search, clyde, and bauerbill are nice, there are definitely more) and place that in a text file. Just set that cron job to a certain interval (depending on your needs) and then just work from there.
    Yeah, and increase the load to the server while you're at it .
    I guess I left out the whole "use an appropriate amount of time between queries" part.

  • Yaourt -S virtualbox_bin : not working

    So I run
    yaourt -S virtualbox_bin
    Simple enough, right?  Wrong.
    I get the message
    ==> Retrieving Sources...
    ==> ERROR: VirtualBox-1.6.4-Linux_x86.run was not found in the build directory and is not a URL.
    Error: Makepkg was unable to build virtualbox_bin package.
    I downloaded VirtualBox-1.6.4-Linux_x86.run and placed in in my current directory - didn't work.
    I looked for a virtualbox_bin directory under the /var/abs tree, not found.
    I did updatedb and ran 'locate virtualbox' to see if I could find some temporary build directory to place the file in - not found.
    Where the hell am I supposed to place the .run file for yaourt to find it????

    It should work.  I'd imagine it's a problem with the PKGBUILD.  If you just want virtualbox_bin, add the archlinuxfr repository to pacman.   Then you can install virtualbox_bin using pacman.
    Edit: When I said it should work, I mean that it would definitely be possible to install virtualbox_bin through yaourt.  Not necessarily that the current PKGBUILD in the aur works.

  • [SOLVED] broadcom-wl driver needs to be rebuilt after kernel upgrade

    I have Arch installed on a netbook, and every time I update the kernel, I have to re-install the broadcom-wl package for the wifi to work. I don't have this problem in Ubuntu.
    I believe this is because it is not getting rebuilt under the new kernel automatically, while in Ubuntu it is.
    I have to connect to Ethernet for the package to build with the default makepkg, so I downloaded the package and ran "makepkg --nobuild" to only download the package files so that I can rebuild the package without an Internet connection. Only problem is that this has failed a couple times in the past when I ran makepkg to build it, and had to re-download the package over Ethernet.
    How do I make it so Arch automatically rebuilds the broadcom-wl package for the newer kernel after it is installed? I am using pacaur as my AUR wrapper.
    SOLVED:
    Installed broadcom-wl-dkms package instead of broadcom-wl so that it gets recompiled on kernel upgrade automatically.

  • LinuxWacom - Cursor jumps to right (Dual Screen) (SOLVED)

    I have this problem. I have been at it for some time now and haven't found a solution.
    I have a Wacom Cintiq 21UX2. Problem is that when I draw on it, the cursor constantly jumps to the right for short moments. This makes it impossible to draw and hard to click buttons.
    I don't have this problem in Opensuse or in Mint, just in Arch-Linux.
    I installed the "wacom-drivers" (0.11.1-2) package and the "kcm-wacomtablet-git" (20110517-1) from AUR at the moment. I tried several combinations, but nothing seams to solve the problem.
    I cant find a solution via Google either.
    I don't know what to do anymore. Anybody got a solution or idea?

    Hi. It's been a while, but I finaly solved it.
    On the wacomlinux site I found that it was a problem in xorg-server. I installed a newer version from AUR. That solved the problem. I had to reïnstall the nvidia driver to. I did the one from AUR, but maybe the binary version was sufficiant. Not shure about that.
    My Arch-system is usable to me again.
    Ginui wrote: 0.11.99 but from what date? Is it after or before 28'th June?
    I thought it was current when using the git-version. Isn't the git version updated automaticly? I also used the git version strait from the site, on different distro's. Every time I used a up-to-date distro I would have this problem. Then I found this solution on the site from linuxwacom.

  • Privoxy Bug?

    Since the latest upgrade, Privoxy is blocking my internet connection.
    If I start Privoxy in a terminal, I get the error message
    b74ca6c0 Fatal error: can't check configuration file '/home/myrlin/config': No such file or directory
    If I create a folder "config" everything works. I guess a "." has been omitted in the source code, so that Privoxy is looking for the folder "config" rather than ".config".
    Does anyone else have this problem?

    Further investigation indicates that the problem lies in the privoxy.service file.
    This file, included in the latest version of the package fails:
    [Unit]
    Description=Privoxy Web Proxy With Advanced Filtering Capabilities
    After=network.target
    [Service]
    Type=forking
    PIDFile=/run/privoxy.pid
    ExecStart=/usr/sbin/privoxy --pidfile /run/privoxy.pid --user privoxy.privoxy /etc/privoxy/config
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    Replacing it with this file from the AUR (privoxy-systemd) solves it:
    [Unit]
    Description=Privacy enhancing HTTP Proxy
    [Service]
    ExecStart=/usr/sbin/privoxy --no-daemon /etc/privoxy/config
    StandardOutput=syslog
    StandardError=syslog
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    I have checked that network.target is loaded and active, so that is not the cause.

    does anyone have an idea to solve this problem!? downloading + building from aur works great with yaourt just the search thingy is kinda broken -.-

  • [SOLVED] makepkg -s with nested AUR deps on "userless" systems

    hi..
    so for the last two years i was able to solve every Arch Linux problem i had from infos around the wiki, the forum, etc. now i am stuck.
    here's the scenario:
    i am automating installation of a full systems for headless usage.
    no user required and/or wanted.
    this works perfectly until i need something special from the AUR.
    because if a package from the AUR has no dependencies we can run makepkg as user nobody:
    ..# sudo -u nobody makepkg
    but as soon as we need
    ..# sudo -u nobody makepkg -s
    to resolve dependencies from the AUR this fails. "nobody" has no password, therefore we can not sudo.
    my preferred idea would be to create a shortlived dummyuser. but how to get this dummy to behave correctly with creation and entering of the password without actual user interaction? (remember: headless automation)
    i would really like to avoid the special workaround of running my own build-server with all the packages i need on different target machines, putting those made packages somewhere on the internet and then be able to download them to the designated machine and "pacman -U" them there.
    i hope someone with a similar use-case can give me some hints.
    cheers,

    nice usage of su, will have to dig more into that and i should be able to not need sudo as an extra package.
    but i am really trying to avoid the NOPASSWD route for security reasons.
    apologies, i forgot to mention that in my original post.

    Why not just script it:
    source PKGBUILD
    pacman -S --asdeps $depends $makedepends
    sudo -u nobody makepkg
    thanks. seeing it written down differently showed me the flaw in my wishful thinking:
    makepkg can of course resolve dependencies but it cannot ever resolve dependencies where one package in the AUR requires another un-made package from the AUR. just doesn't work. that was the block i had.
    although not really beautiful i will just drill down the package-chain and resolve dependencies myself in the installer scripts.

  • [SOLVED] Can't compile kyotocabinet-python AUR package after Python up

    Hello,
    after today's upgrade to 3.3.0-1, Python lost access to the kyotocabinet package (kyotocabinet-python 1.22-1 from AUR). I tried to recompile it, but when I run makepkg, It just aborts with an error. Anyone knows what is going on?

    Hello,
    sadly I still haven't been able to recompile kyotocabinet-python with the new Python version (3.3.0-1)—it always gives the same error described in my first post. No new version has been released by Hatsuki Hirabayashi either, so I had to downgrade the system to Python 3.2.3-3.
    I'd like to know if anyone else is currently able/unable to use kyotocabinet-python, so that I may contact the package author directly.
    Any ideas?

  • [SOLVED] Remove / Uninstall 'supersonic' AUR package

    Hi guys, I am setting up a home server which will have OwnCloud and some music streaming with Subsonic.
    I read that Supersonic was a fork of Subsonic and was available on AUR so I installed that - though I cannot seem to get it to work, it starts OK but I cannot browse to MYHOMEURL:4040.
    Anyways, I am now gonna install the actual subsonic from AUR but I cannot seem to uninstall supersonic using pacman.
    Pacman -Rsnc supersonic
    ...returns 'error: target not found: supersonic'
    This is my first time using Arch and of course AUR so I cannot see how to remove this package.

  • [Solved] Are these dependecies on aur?

    I more of a creative person and enjoy playing LittleBigPlanet. But right now, I don't have access to the PS3, so I can't play it. I remember Xmoto being fun and I loved to create levels using inksmoto. (Inksmoto is an add-on for inkscape that allows you to make Xmoto levels.) I followed all the instructions on how to install it, but it appears that I didn't have a few dependencies installed, so it didn't work. I got one of them installed, (tk) but I need 2 more. (Python-Imaging-Tk and Python-Tk) I searched to see if it was on aur, and neither of them were. I searched tk, but then a bunch of GTK things showed up, and I didn't have the time to search through all of that. I searched TkInter, but nothing showed up. Are these dependecies found anywhere that it would be easy to install? I don't want to have to compile the dependecies. (Although it wouldn't take too long) Right now I'm updating and the update included Python, so the update may fix this. I'm sorry if the update fixes it. I have a 32-bit processer, I doubt this would help but it just might.
    CONCLUSION for people who are too lazy to read the text above:
    Need These dependecies: Python-Imaging-Tk and Python-Tk.
    Couldn't find them, too lazy to look through tons of results.
    Updating, update includes Python, update may fix it.
    32-bit processer.
    EDIT: Update didn't work, please help!
    EDIT (Again): All finished, works just fine. Thanks iphitus for helping me!

    @tjb.....
    Before you piss off to many folks, you've already seen no one here is going to do work for you.
    It was probably a whim you were even responded to, even though it looked more like you ticked someone off already.
    Everyone here has a life outside of this forum to include the devs and mods.
    Pretty much everyone here will help with a legit problem, at least supply a link to a fix for the most part.
    What you're asking for is for someone to hold your hand and pretty much think for you.
    Arch is the best distro going for my money, but the users here are somewhat advanced and aren't much inclined to hold hands or think for someone else when the wiki is massive compared to most of the ones I've encountered and just chock full of answers.
    Get thee to the wiki dude. [I'm assuming of course]
    edit. simultaneous post as I see he already solved his problem. O well.

  • [SOLVED] Braid AUR "ERROR: There is no agent set up to handle file..."

    SOLUTION AT BOTTOM OF THREAD!
    I have installed numerous AUR packages in the past.  However, this is the first that I am unable to figure out.
    I assume I am supposed to extract the tar, copy the Braid package files (from my owned copy of Braid) to the same directory, run makepkg, then install via pacman.  The problem I am having is when I go to use makepkg I get the following error:
    # makepkg -s
    ==> Making package: braid 1.0.2-1 (DATE TIME)
    ==> Checking runtime dependencies...
    ==> Checking buildtime dependencies...
    ==> Retrieving Sources...
    ==> ERROR: There is no agent set up to handle file URLs. Check /etc/makepkg.conf.
    Aborting...
    I am not finding any solutions on Google.  Please help!
    Edit - Edited to show thread solved.

    SOLUTION! Provided by tdy
    braid-linux-build2.run.bin from Humble Indie Bundle 2 is required!
    You must edit the PKGBUILD file.
    source=("$_gamepkg"::"file://$_gamepkg"
    Change the source line to this:
    source=($_gamepkg
    Don't extract the braid file.  Just place it in the same directory as the PKGBUILD file.
    Run makepkg
    # makepkg -s
    Then run pacman
    pacman -U [filename].pkg.tar
    YOU ARE DONE!
    UPDATE!!!
    AFTER THIS THREAD WAS SOLVED, THE AUR PACKAGE WAS UPDATED TO SOLVE THIS ERROR.  JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE braid-linux-build2.run.bin FILE IN THE SAME DIRECTORY, AND THE INSTALL WILL WORK.
