VLookup formula contains reference error:

I am using a spreadsheet to grade playing tests based on a series of rubrics.  I have a cell that adds up the total of points the student earns for the test.  In another table, I have a chart that converts the rubric score to a 100 point based scale to enter in my gradebook.  I am trying to write a formula that looks at the cell where the total number of points is and then looks at the table and matches that total to the converted grade.  (Example: student receives a total of 35 points based on the rubrics - it converts to an 80 for the gradebook). I  have the following formula:
=VLOOKUP(N39,Table 2 :: A1:A51,Table 2 :: B1:B51,FALSE)
N39 has a SUM formula that adds up the rubric points
Table 2 column A has the rubric grades
Table 2 column B has the converted grades
I put FALSE, as I need an exact match
I am getting an error: "the formula contains an invalid reference"  I'm not used to using this formula and I just can't figure out what I am doing wrong.  I would like to get this working so I can send the test form to the students via e-mail and not kill as many trees.  Suggestions would be welcome

Hi cslviola,
I see two issues here.
You wrote:
"N39 has a SUM formula that adds up the rubric points
Table 2 column A has the rubric grades
Table 2 column B has the converted grades

Does your lookup table include every possible value of the sum of the rubric grades?
A "close match" in these functions means "the largest value that is less than or equal to the search value."
If every possible search value is included in column a of the lookup table, then a close match will alway be a match to the value that is equal to the search value (ie. an exact match).
If there are possible rubric point sums that are not included in the table, then a function requiring an exact match will return an error if he search vaue (the rubric point sum) is one of the values mising from column A of the Lookup table. Unless that is your expected result, you do not need (and do not want) an exact match.
Regarding your formula:
I see some confusion here between the syntax requirements of LOOKUP and those of VLOOKUP.
=VLOOKUP(N39,Table 2 :: A1:A51,Table 2 :: B1:B51,FALSE)
Here's the LOOKUP syntax:
LOOKUP(search-for, search-where, result-values)
As a LOOKUP formula, your formula above would be:
=LOOKUP(N39,Table 2::A1:A51,Table 2::B1:B51)
LOOKUP always requires only a close match, which is the better choice for your issue.
The syntax for VLOOKUP is a bit different:
VLOOKUP(search-for, columns-range, return-column, close-match)
search-for is the same as for LOOKUP, but the next argument is different.
columns range must specify all of the columns and rows making up the lookup table. In your case, that's columns A and B of Table 2. The search column is always the leftmost column of the Lookup table.
return column is specified as the number corresponding to the position if the return column in the Lookup table. For your case, the return column is column 2 (NOT because it is column B, but because it is the second column of the Lookup table. If your Lookup table consisted of cells J1:K51, the return column (K) would still be column 2)
close value, if set as FALSE, requires an exact match of the search value and the value it finds in the search column; set to TRUE, or omitted from the formula means a close match (as defined above) is aceptable.
Your formula as a VLOOKUP formula, would look like this:
=VLOOKUP(N39,Table 2::A1:B51,2,FALSE)   (requiring an exact match)
OR
=VLOOKUP(N39,Table 2::A1:B51,2)   (requiring a close match, as defined above)
Personally, I'd go for the LOOKUP version here.

Barry

  • The formula contains a syntax error

Hi i keep getting the following message errors The formula contains a syntax error. I have working with lookup formula so when i change hours is changes the price. Just need to get a total for hours x number of people x price cant seem to get there.
    Thanks Danny

It's hard to say from your screenshot, but it appears you are either attempting to make a cell reference itself, or the reference is empty.
There is no need for the parentheses since algebraic hierarchy will result in the same answer.
Capture the row and column data, post a more descriptive screenshot, or describe the required calculation in greater detail.

According to the error message, it seems some ActiveX control is not registered successfully on the new machine.
Would you mind telling us which ActiveX controls you used in the workbook?
    >> For my applications Excel from Office 365 is now useless. Should I just let my subscription run out and purchase another version?
According to my experience, this issue is not related to the subscription.

  • ERROR - "The formula contains a number outside of the valid range"

    Hello,
I am using an equation that is returning the error "the formula contains a number outside of the valid range" when the constituent cells of the equation contain a negative number. I have tried using the inspector to format the problem cell(s) differently, but to no avail. The equation works fine in other respects. How is numbers deciding what the valid range for variables in my foruma is?
I've done the math out separately to make sure the equation isn't dividing by 0 or something wacky, but there's nothing wrong with the formula or the result... It should be doing math and it's not!
I haven't found any posts by other users with the same problem.
    Thanks.

    jd,
It would help us if you paste the formula in your post here, exactly as it appears in the cell. Also tell us the values of the inputs to that formula.
Changing a cell's format seldom has any effect on the calculation. Formatting changes how a result is displayed, but not what the result of the formula is behind the screen.

  • Object library invalid or contains references to object definitions that could not be found problem

    Hello,
Yesterday I got the following error on the server: "object library invalid or contains references to object definitions that could not be found problem".
I found this documentation, followed the steps and all was OK on the server:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2703186/en-us
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/e94f2fc3-71f1-4dad-bbf1-37f906e28e8e/object-library-invalid-or-contains-references-to-object-definitions-that-could-not-be-found?forum=exceldev
Our server is used to do batch processing for refreshing our excel's. This morning, after the excel's got refreshed on the server, I've got this error on the
client computers (everything works fine on the server computer). I did the steps above on the client computers, but the problem still persists.
It looks like there is a difference in version between server and client.
If I do the refreshing on the same computer there is no problem. But when the server does the refreshing and I try to open it on a different computer, I get this error.
The security update has been removed from the computer, but I can't use my excel's anymore.
Does any one have some advice for me?
    Best regards,
    Wouter

    Hi Wouter,
    Thanks for the further explaintation.
According to the description, the issue seems that the Workboook on the client side(with lower Excel version) couldn't run the VBA after it opened by server(higher version Excel application).
If I understood correctly, that sounds that the issue is relative to the specific version of Excel product or the updates.
I suggest you contacting Microsoft support to raise an incident so that our engineer could work closely with him to identify the root cause and resolve this issue as soon as possible.
If the support engineer determines that the issue is the result of a bug the service request will be a no-charge case and you won't be charged.

Looks like some recent windows update is causing this issue. I tried to delete the temporary file from the command prompt as mentioned in some of the forums using the below command. But, still it
    is not working.
    DEL /S /A:H /A:-H *.EXD
Even tried to uninstall the recent windows update on both of our machines, but still the issue is not resolved. It is working ok in his machine, but I get the compile error. Please share your thoughts.
    Thanks.
Below are the references available in the excel macro application. There is no missing reference error on both of our machines. We both are using Excel 2010 32 bit. My OS is windows 7 64 bit and

I've heard some cases that even deleting EXD files and running the FixIt tools, ActiveX controls weren't working.
Can you confirm if you can insert ActiveX controls in your worksheet, please?

  • Phantom circular reference errors in spreadsheet

I'm getting phantom circular reference errors in one of my Appleworks spreadsheets.
I'm trying to compute the average of several sets of pairs of numbers, I have max of three pairs per line, and I'm using COUNT to determine how many pairs are present. I'm getting "can't resolve circular reference" errors occasionally when I fill down and add data for a new line, even though there aren't any circular references.
    Columns
    A= date, B=average X, C=averageY, D=number of pairs for this line
    E F = first pair, G H = second pair, I J = third pair.
The second and third pair don't occur every day.
These are the formulas I'm using,
    B average_X =(E_line# + G_line# + Iline#)/Dline#
    C average_Y =(F_line# + H_line# + Jline#)/Dline#
    D numPairs =COUNT(Eline#...Jline#)/2
I add a new line each day.
Its worked just fine until I went over 100 lines and now I occasionally get "can't resolve circular reference" erros, and the calculation cells, but there AREN'T any circular references.
Anyone have any idea whats going on?

    I'm using AW 6.2.7 I'm on OS X 10.3.9
I tried it with removing the AVERAGE and COUNT functions and it still happens.
Seems like its somehow related to any references to columns J and K, even if there's no data in those cells, and no references to other cells.
Its related to the COUNT function.
If I drop off the last two columns it all seems to work ok.
    =(F153+H153)/(E153/2)
    where E153 is =COUNT(F153..I153)
But if I try to use the last pair (columns J and K) it gets errors
    =(F153H153I153)/(E153/2)
    where E153 is =COUNT(F153..K153)
DOES the COUNT function have a limitation to how many cells it can reference?
It seems like for some reason the J column is corrupted. sometimes if there is any number in colum J it gets "circular reference error" EVEN though there is NO circulare reference only a number.
BUT when I delete the number from Column J the error goes away.

  • The expression in field u0093Company_Codeu0094 contains an error: Syntax error

    Hi all,
I have added an extra variable to my query. Then in VC I refreshed my queries and added an extra field to the input form I used. I also updated the submit actions. Now when I deploy it says
The expression in field “Company_Code” contains an error: Syntax error
    How to solve this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ralph

You can double click on the error and then you get more information and the issue is selected by the Visual Composer. Maybe there is an error in your formula or the value, which you have assinged has a wrong data type.

  • SAP Web Service error text : The database returned a value containing an error , type  CX_SY_OPEN_SQL_DB

    Hello Guru's,
we are creating sales order in SAP from a quote created in .NET,  through Web Service created in SAP, and consumed in .NET.
When ever a order is created in SAP for a given quote, SAP returns the sales order number to .NET.
Orders are getting created as expected, but once in a while we are getting the following error from webservice :
Web service processing error; more details in the web service error log on provider side (UTC timestamp 20140609173429; Transaction ID 4DFCEFE33301F1EBB5CE00155D0B4530)
But the problem is order is getting created in SAP for the perticular quote for which we are getting the above error and this order number is not getting returned to .NET.
Upon analysis in TCODE  SRT_UTIL for the above transaction ID, has the following details , which are hardly help full to resolve the error.
    ----TYPE                                  CX_SY_OPEN_SQL_DB

    ----CX_SY_NO_HANDLER

  • SCCM 2012 R2 reporting error: "The DefaultValue expression for the report parameter 'UserTokenSIDs' contains an error: A specified logon session does not exist. It may already have been terminated. (rsRuntimeErrorInExpression)"

    Hi,
I have two SCCM environments under same active directory domain and one service account have been used for SCCM configurations on both the environments (QA and PRODUCTION). I am facing similar error as mentioned above while trying to fetch reports on
PRODUCTION site, but the QA site is working fine, though same service account have been used for configuring both. While looking at the reportserverservice_<date> log on my Production DB server i see the following error
    "processing!ReportServer_0-3!2124!01/02/2015-09:09:30:: e ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportProcessing.ProcessingAbortedException: , Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportProcessing.ProcessingAbortedException: An error has occurred during
report processing. ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportProcessing.ReportProcessingException: Cannot read the next data row for the dataset DataSet1. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Conversion failed when converting the nvarchar value 'Override
    Default' to data type int."
My DB and SCCM primary site are different and the reorting services point is installed on remote DB server. Please help me resolving the issue.
    Troubleshooting performed:
1.Disabled the registry key 'EnableRbacReporting' from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\SRSRP to 0 and then restarted SSRS service and the reporting worked for some minutes after that the registry key reverted back to 1 automatically and
    reporting started throwing errors again.
    2. Checked with the permissions on DB whether or not 'sysadmin' role is assigned to the SCCM service account.
    3. re-registered the SQL management Provider WMI class.
    mofcomp.exe “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Shared\sqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof”

    Hi All,
Finally found exact solution to the reporting error.
Error: while launching SCCM reports (both from Console and web based) an unexpected error occured with error message as "The DefaultValue expression for the report parameter ‘UserTokenSIDs’ contains an error: A specified logon session does not exist.
It may already have been terminated. (rsRuntimeErrorInExpression)"
Solution: This is password replication issue for the domain account used to configure reporting services point in SCCM. If your SQL SSRS reporting services instance and databse runs with local default account whereas the reporting services point on SCCM
primary site is configured with domain account, (As in My case) you need to perform the following in order to get rid of the error.
Launch 'Reporting Services Configuration Manager' from the SQL SSRS box(either Local or Remote), Connect to Report Server Instance->Go to 'Execution Account' tab->Specify the 'Execution Account' as domain account and password which is used to configure
Reporting Services Point in SCCM Primary Site, and then click apply.
Now Lauch the report either way (Web based or from Console), the error will disappear and all your default reports will execute perfectly as before.

  • I get a "JavaScript Application - Reference Error: XPCSafeJSObjectWrapper is not defined" error every time I try to open a new tab.

Just like the title says, starting with Firefox 4 Beta 6 or 7, I forgot. Any time I try to open a new blank tab (sometimes even when I start up Firefox and the app tabs load) I get an error that says "JavaScript Application - Reference Error: XPCSafeJSObjectWrapper is not defined" If I close it everything works as normal again (until I open a new tab) but it is very annoying to have to do this. Is there any fix for this or is the bug just still there?

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

    Hi
first run "ipconfig /flushdns" and then "ipconfig /registerdns" finally restart dns service and check the situation, also you can check dns logs computer management ->Event viewer->Custom Views->Server roles->DNS.
