VM Crash on Premium Storage

I have been using the Premium Storage Preview, and have had nothing but problems.
I created a new VM on premium storage, and I tried copying a file (1GB) from another VM, and VM on Premium Storage rebooted.
I moved a few other VM's to the premium storage, and they all had the same symptoms, and have since moved the VM's back.
The servers do not create a memory.dmp file, so i'm not sure exactly what is going on.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Using US East 2.

Hi,
I understand that while you are copying data from VM2 to VM1 which is on Premium Storage, VM1 reboots.
I suggest you to try creating another VM with Premium Storage in the same Location for testing purpose and try performing the Copy Operation.
If it works fine, suggest you delete the existing VM retaining the attached disks. You can then attach the disk to the new VM.
To know more about attaching the disk, please follow the below article
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn790303.aspx

Hope this helps !

  • Disk Performance of DS-Series VMs (Premium Storage)

We're running performance tests on two new Standard DS13 (8 Core, 56 GB) VMs (both using the latest/default Windows 2012 R2 image) backed by Premium Storage and have hit a wall with step 1 in testing the local SSD performance.
We understand 25% of the 400GB local SSD for these VMs is made available as temporary storage and the other 75% is used for Premium Storage caching:
    http://azure.microsoft.com/blog/2014/12/11/new-premium-storage-backed-virtual-machines/
On the remaining 25%, we expect to see performance along these lines:

The performance of the OS disk is better but nowhere close to the 150 MB/s you'd expect for a P20 disk (assuming that's what's allocated for the default 127GB OS disk).

And this is what SQLIO reports for the local SSD:

need to expand by:      8388608 bytes
    expanding D:testfile.dat ... done.
    initialization done
    CUMULATIVE DATA:
    throughput metrics:
    IOs/sec:   499.38
    MBs/sec:     0.97
    And for the P30:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\SQLIO>sqlio -dE
    sqlio v1.5.SG
1 thread reading for 30 secs from file E:testfile.dat
using 2KB IOs over 128KB stripes with 64 IOs per run

    initialization done
    CUMULATIVE DATA:
    throughput metrics:
    IOs/sec:  5103.03
    MBs/sec:     9.96
The 5000 IOPS advertised for the P30 is holding up but what about the 200 MB/s throughput per disk?
NOTE: Attempts to create the P30 data disk with ReadWrite cache policy result in:
Update-AzureVm : BadRequest: The disk cache setting ReadWrite is not supported for DataVirtualHardDisk.
    Any guidance would be appreciated:
Why is the local SSD storage throttled at 500 IOPS and 1-4 MB/s throughput?
How do we achieve 200MB/s on writes as we see with reads on P30s, what's the test to run?
Can you publish I/O benchmarks that we can run to validate our setup?

Curious as to why that's the guidance as the same scenario repeated with a P30 data disk
HostCaching set to None yields poorer performance across the board, at least with this crude benchmark:
               Sequential Read :    66.756 MB/s
              Sequential Write :    40.536 MB/s
             Random Read 512KB :    60.273 MB/s

  • Error registering DS-Series VM with OS disk on Premium Storage

Hi, are there any known issues in relation to backing up DS-series VMs that are created with an OS disk on premium storage? I've
tried testing with two different subscriptions and two different premium storage accounts and get an error when trying to register a DS-series VM which has an OS disk on a premium storage account.
    ERROR DETAILS
Microsoft Azure Backup encountered an internal error.
Wait for a few minutes and then try the operation again. If the issue persists, contact Microsoft Support.
I've just created a DS-series VM on a standard storage account and registered it successfully. I haven't tried attaching a premium disk and backing
    up yet however.

Yes, VMs with disks on premium storage are not supported right now for Azure Backup. We will be updating our documentation shortly to reflect that limitation.
We will also update the forum when that support is available

  • Backup DS- Series VM vhd's from Premium storage to Standard

    Hi ,
How to move DS- Series VMs from Premium storage to Standard storage & create D-Series VMs using backed up vhd ?

    Hi Dinesh;
As DS Series VM uses a different computing architecture compared to a D series VM one cannot save the VHD file and convert it back to a D series VM.

  • Premium Storage billing : Do we pay for an entire P disk ?

    Hi all,
After the Premium Storage GA, i was reviewing the Premium Storage pricing and i was surprised by the last line on the FAQ page:
If I attach an empty 100GB disk to my virtual machine, will I be charged for the entire 100 GB or just the storage space I use?
If the empty 100GB disk is backed by a Premium Storage Account then you will be charged for a P0 (128GB) disk. If any other type of Storage Account is used then you’ll only be billed for the storage space used to store the data that is written to
the disk regardless of the allocated disk size
What that means? Do i need to pay for an entire P disk if i use it ?

    Hi,
Premium storage is different from regular storage.
In premium storage, if you go for P30 the entire 1024GB disk is allocated to you since it is SSD drive and the pricing is different.

  • Mass Storage Driver Severe Crash - USB Mass Storage device useless

I am running the latest, updated version of OSX Leopard; Hardware Growler; and Parallels Desktop. Today, as I was doing a very resource-intensive task on Windows XP - via parallels - I plugged in my Samsung M610 to try to access the memory card. I then closed Windows XP, and noticed that my cpu was still registering at 100% output. Opening Activity Monitor and looking at the processes there, I saw that Mass Storage was taking 100.00 units of CPU output, and was not responding, I immediately clicked end process. Much to my dismay however, Activity Monitor then proceeded to lock up, so I forced it to quit, which caused finder to lock up in turn. Throughout this time, my cpu was still working overtime, so I decided to power the computer off. Upon rebooting and much "whew"-ing I tried to plug my Cell Phone in again; as usual Hardware Growler notified me of the connection and it's details, however, confusingly finder had no knowledge of any mass storage connection. After multiple connects and reconnects, testing all USB ports on my MBP (and being annoyed by the system telling me to properly find and eject hardware before removing it, which I suppose I should take as a good sign) my memory card remained invisible to finder. Hardware growler continues to perfectly recognize the device connection.
The most odd thing about this particular problem, is that other USB devices are recognized... at least one other Mass storage device is, but I have only one other device to test at the moment.... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Crashing and loosing storage space

I've been experiencing crashes on both apple and 3rd party apps. I also notticed on the sync summary screen that "other" has ballooned to 1.6GB. Could these be related and what can I do to fix? The only major changes I've made recently has been installing iLife '11.

To get rid of an "Other" category that is so large, restore your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup first. This should also resolve the problem with crashes with both Apple and 3rd party apps. If no change after this, try restoring with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.

  • USB Port keeps crashing my portable storage devices

Ok no matter if it's an external hard drive or a usb flash drive, while transferring data my usb port will just die. The Device Removal window will pop up. If it's my flash drive then the light will keep flashing repeatedly. For the external portable hard drive i just keep hearing the disk start and stop spinning simultaneously. Anyone know how I would go about fixing this problem?
    Thanks,
    Dak

Hi Dave, not long winded at all.
I think you'vve narrowed it down to the OS & Install.
Does the Retrospect Installer have an uninstaller?
    Might try AppDelete...
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/appdelete.html
Even if you have to Install Retrospect again to be sure of finding it's files.
    What Format is the External?
Also, WD MyBooks are not a good choice for PPC Macs...

  • Streaming to airport express causes majour crashes.

I finally got an express for the sitting room hifi.
My music is on a NAS drive and the I access it from an iBook.
iTunes loads fine and the music is there. If I play the music on the iBook its OK, with just an occasional dropout which rights it self.
On the Airport though its unusable, the tune loads fine and gets started, after about a minute, you get one drop out, then more and if you try and do anything on iTunes it crashes, force quit does not quit iTunes, it has taken the whole system down you cannot load activity monitor or anything.
It does this each and everytime, any ideas?
The wireless side is handled by a Draytek Vigor 2600, which seems to do the business on most things, even though itunes crashes, the NAS storage device is still accessible from the desktop no problems.

My problem is exactly the same. Only iMac speakers work stably.

    Hi,
I apologize for this dumb post but, I think I need a storage 101 and can anyone help me to understand and teach me the technology of these 2 models of Compellent, Basically can anyone give me a Dell storage 101 or storage 101. : )
    Thank you
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

DS series was introduced like a D series with Premium Storage. Microsoft is working on delivering the best valuable compute and storage performances for it's Azure customers, and the work to achieve this is huge. Premium Storage had hit GA yesterday, and
the work will continue (I don't have proofs or stream line) to extend it to other VM series. We will see Azure road map soon

  • SLES12 - added SSD storage not recognized

    Good evening
I have a SLES virtual machine running with category DS13 which allows up to 15 disks. Today I have added 7 Disks, they were all recognized fine as device and i could format them.
Then I have added 4 more premium disks by Power Shell - these disks were successfully added, but I dont' see them as user root in my virtual machine, can't format them etc.
The limit of 15 disks is not reached, so why I don't see these disks in the OS? Any help is very appreciated.

  • SCVMM losing connection to cluster nodes

Hey guys'n girls, I hope this is the right forum for this question. I already opened a ticket at MS support as well because it's impacting our production environment indirectly, but even after a week there's been no contact. Losing faith in MS support there
The problem we're having is that scvmm is that a host enters the 'needs attention' state, with a winrm error 0x80338126. I guess it has something to do with the network or with Kerberos, and I've found some info on it, but I still haven't been able to solve
it. Do you guys have any ideas?
    Problem summary:
We are seeing an issue on our new hyper-v platform. The platform should have been in production last week, but this issue is delaying our project as we can't seem to get it stable.
The problem we are experiencing is that SCVMM loses the connection to some of the Hyper-V nodes. Not one
specific node. Last week it happened to two nodes, and today it happened to another node. I see issues with WinRM, and I expect something to do with kerberos. See the bottom of this post for background details and software versions.
The host gets the status 'needs attention', and if you look at the status of the machine, WinRM gives an error. The error is:
    Error (2916)
VMM is unable to complete the request. The connection to the agent cc1-hyp-10.domaincloud1.local was lost.
WinRM: URL: [http://cc1-hyp-10.domaincloud1.local:5985], Verb: [ENUMERATE], Resource: [http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/cimv2/Win32_Service], Filter: [select * from Win32_Service where Name="WinRM"]
    Unknown error (0x80338126)
    Recommended Action
Ensure that the Windows Remote Management (WinRM) service and the VMM agent are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTP/HTTPS traffic. Ensure that VMM server is able to communicate with cc1-hyp-10.domaincloud1.local over WinRM by successfully
    running the following command:
     winrm id –r:cc1-hyp-10.domaincloud1.local
    This
problem can also be caused by a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service crash. If the server is running Windows Server 2008 R2, ensure that KB 982293 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982293)
    is installed on it.
If the error persists, restart cc1-hyp-10.domaincloud1.local and then try the operation again. /nRefer to
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742275 for more details.
Doing a simple test from the VMM server to the problematic cluster node shows this error:
    PS C:\> hostname
    CC1-VMM-01
    PS C:\> winrm id -r:cc1-hyp-10.domaincloud1.local
    WSManFault
Message = WinRM cannot complete the operation. Verify that the specified computer name is valid, that the computer is accessible over the network, and that a firewall exception for the WinRM service is enabled and allows access from this
computer. By default, the WinRM firewall exception for public profiles limits access to remote computers within the same local subnet.

So at this point only the test from the cc1-vmm-01 to cc1-hyp-10 seems to be problematic.
I followed the steps in the page
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742275 (which is referred to above). I tried the VMMCA, but it can't really get it working the way I want, or it seems to give outdated recommendations.
I tried checking for duplicate SPN's by running setspn -x on affected machines. No results (although I do not understand
what an SPN is or how it works). I rebuilt the performance counters.
It tried setting 'sc config winrm type= own' as described in [http://blinditandnetworkadmin.blogspot.nl/2012/08/kb-how-to-troubleshoot-needs-attention.html].
If I reboot this cc1-hyp-10 machine, it will start working perfectly again. However, then I can't troubleshoot the issue, and it will happen again.
I want this problem to be solved, so vmm never loses connection to the hypervisors it's managing again!
    Background information:
We've set up a platform with Hyper-V to run a VM workload. The platform consists of the following hardware:
2 Dell R620's with 32GB of RAM, running hyper-v to virtualize the cloud management layer (DC's, VMM, SQL). These machines are called cc1-hyp-01 and cc1-hyp-02. They run the management vm's like cc1-dc-01/02, cc1-sql-01, cc1-vmm-01, etc. The names are self-explanatory.
The VMM machine is NOT clustered.
8 Dell M620 blades with 320GB of RAM, running hyper-v to virtualize the customer workload. The machines are
called cc1-hyp-10 until cc1-hyp-17. They are in a cluster.
2 Equallogic units form a SAN (premium storage), and we have a Dell R515 running iscsi target (budget storage).
We have Dell Force10 switches and Cisco C3750X switches to connect everything together (mostly 10GB links).
All hosts run Windows Server 2012R2 Datacenter edition. The VMM server runs System Center Virtual Machine Manage 2012 R2.
All the latest Windows updates are installed on every host. There are no firewalls between any host (vmm and hypervisors) at this level. Windows firewalls are all disabled. No antivirus software is installed, no symantec software is installed.
The only non-standard software that is installed is the Dell Host Integration Tools 4.7.1, Dell Openmanage Server Administrator, and some small stuff like 7-zip, bginfo, net-snap, etc.
The SCVMM service is running under the domain account DOMAINCLOUD1\scvmm. This machine is in the local administrators group of each cluster node.
On top of this cloud layer we're running the tenant layer with a lot of vm's for a specific customer (although they are all off now).

I think I found the culprit, after an hour of analyzing wireshark dumps I found the vmm had jumbo frames enabled on the management interface to the hosts (and the underlying infrastructure does not).. Now my winrm commands started working again.

  • What to add / switch to make encoding faster?

I'm looking to add or swap something in my system to improve encode time as much as possible. Currently it's taking 2-3 hours to encode 5 minutes of video.
The video is AVCHD encoding to H.264 and it's put through After Effects first with a Keylight effect to remove green screen. Then imported into Premiere and published there.
What's the best hardware improvement I can make to speed up encode time? RAM?
    Here's what I have currently:
    Gigabyte X58A-UD3R ATX LGA1366 X58 DDR3 4PCI-E SATA3 USB3.0 Sound GLAN CrossFireX SLI Motherboard
    Corsair XMS3 TR3X6G1333C7 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1333 CL 7-7-7-20 1T Core i7 Memory Kit
    Intel Core i7 930 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.8GHZ 8MB L3 Cache 130W 45NM Retail Box
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA3 6GB/S 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Dual Proc Hard Drive OEM
I also recently removed this SSD drive as it seemed to be causing it to crash.
Corsair Storage Solutions Reactor Series 60GB 2.5IN SATA2 Solid State Disk Flash Drive SSD
    Also, had this.
NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800 by PNY 768MB PCI-E16 DVI Dual DisplayPort Workstation Video Card
but just switched to GTX 570  - Was this worth it?
Any advice on what I can add to help pick up encode time and what kind of improvement I can expect would be much appreciated. RAM?
    Thank you!

Good thing that you switched out that old, slow Quadro FX 1800 (which IMHO was based on an underclocked GeForce 9600 GT) for the GTX 570. However, you still have two big problems:
    1) Not enough disks. You have only one hard disk (from your list; however, you actually have two hard drives, which is the absolute minimum required of Adobe to run Premiere Pro to anyone's satisfaction) - and the SATA interface itself is only half-duplex (meaning that it cannot handle data in both directions simultaneously, but rather it only allows data to travel in one direction at a time). Get at least two more (preferably identical) hard disks for that system.
    2) 6GB of RAM is not quite enough for CS5.5. Since RAM is relatively cheap nowadays, go with 24GB of RAM (6 x 4GB sticks). However, in order to use more than 16GB of RAM, you should upgrade to Windows 7 Professional if you are currently running Home Premium.
In addition, I recommend an overclock on that i7-930. But to overclock above 3.4-ish GHz, you should get yourself an aftermarket CPU cooler, such as a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, that's compatible with LGA 1366 CPUs.

  • SQL Server on Azure: Performance Nightmare

Martin2012 wrote:what types of disk have you got holding the SQL data? Hopefully stripped SSDshttps://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn133149.aspxCan you you the SQL as a Service http://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/services/sql-database/
or do you need to config the sqlDB more heavily?Hi MartinWe have deployed our SQL Server in Premium Storage, Standard DS3, giving it a single P20 disk.As we understood, there is also throttling on the machine that u use. this means that a DS3 will limit everything to 128MB/s and 12800 IOPS (we can live with the IOPS though).Neverteless, 128MB/s means that when SQL uses allocation blocks of 64KB, it will also limit the IOPS to 2300.Azure SQL is not an option, since our DB is heavily stressed. We can't get the highest model, since the cost is too high.

Hi guys and gals!I got some problems with running an SQL Server on Azure.
The goal is to deploy our .NET application to Azure by the end of the year. Running our app on a just a simple webserver goes as smooth as ever, no problem.
The big problem is the SQL Server.
SQL on Azure has the reputation to run quite slow. The reading IOPS are OK, but the writing... a NIGHTMARE. We are talking about 0.26 MB/s when it is fresh out of the box!!
After the initial tests, I have found an article with best practices for Azure:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn133149.aspxI thought: Good enough, let's try this.
But even after turning our server upside down and back, there are barely any changes.Do you guys also have noticed this problem? What am I doing wrong? Is there something that I missed completely?Thank you and happy computing!

  • Upgrade VMs from A class to D

I have 8 machines assigned to one virtual network under one account.  The developers and testers are complaining about performance so before bringing them back in-house I figured I would try upgrading them to SSD machines.  However "D"
machines do not appear to be an option in the configuration tab.
I tried creating a new VM and putting it into the virtual network.  Still, SSD machines do not appear as an option.  I can create SSD machines as long as I don't add them to my virtual network.
Ideally I would like four of these machines to be SSD and the remainder can remain in the A class and for all of them to be in the same virtual network.
If it matters, the virtual network is linked to our network at the office using a static site-to-site gateway.  I would prefer not to pay for a bunch of gateway connections.
What is the best way to solve this problem?

For SSD machine : Are you meningeal  D- Series or DS-Series.
There is no different between A- Series and D-Series storage performance (Except the temporary storage). The DS-Series meanwhile use Azure Premium Storage (That went GA few weeks ago). Premium Storage offers best class storage with enhanced performance (IOPS/Throughput)
    and latency. Look
    HERE for more information
    D-Series
D-Series is available only on the following regions (SOURCE)
    United States
    West US
    East US
    North US
    South US
    Central US
    US East 2
    Europe
    North Europe
    West Europe
    Asia
    Japan West
    Japan East
    Southeast Asia
    East Asia
    Australia
    Australia East
    Australia Southeast
    DS-Series
DS-Series is available only on the following regions (SOURCE)
    West US
    East US 2
    West Europe
    East China
    Southeast Asia
    West Japan
    So:
    - If your network is deployed on a region where the VM series are not available, you will not be able to connect them to this network
    - If you don't have a Premium Storage Account, you will not be able to deploy DD-Series VMs
