VMware ESX Cluster Port Groups not Replicated as Network Sites in SCVMM 2012 Logical Switch

To whom it may concern,
We have added our ESX 4.1 Update 2 Cluster that's being managed by VMware vCenter to SCVMM 2012 because we want to create a private cloud and use the resources of the ESX cluster. SCVMM is replicating all the vSwitch from the ESX cluster as a logical network
but it's not replicating the port groups on the vSwitch as Network Sites associated to the Logical Network.
May you please advise or confirm that this is the normal behaviour of SCVMM? Or is there any way that SCVMM would be able to recognize the port groups associated to the ESX vSwitch and replicate it a a Networks Sites associated to Logical Switches?
Your prompt response will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Graham,
Thanks for your reply.
I understand that we need to configure the port groups in the vCenter server but SCVMM is only replicating the vSwitch as a Logical Network but not the port groups. It should also replicate the port group as a network site associated to the logical network.
On our VMware environment, we have port groups on different VLANs and being mapped to one physical NIC. When creating a VMware VM in a private cloud with a self-service user role we can't select the option to connect the port group that we've created from
the vCenter server. The only option it gives is the logical network (vSwitch) not the port groups within that logical network (vSwitch). Even if we create network site within the logical network (with assigned VLAN) in SCVMM, it randomly selects the port group
within the VMware vSwitch when we create a VM. We need the users with a self-service role to be able to select the port group from our vSwitch to assign the virtual NIC of the VM to a specific port group. In this way, they don't have to call or email us to
assign the VM to a port group.
I still don't understand why SCVMM does not map the port groups we've created from VMware vCenter server with user that has a self-service role. Is there any other way so that we can map the port group automatically to SCVMM?
Please advise. Thanks!

  • Prime Infrastructure (2.0) utilization report on port group possible?

    Hello
I want to create an interface utilization report for a specific port group in PI, but can't see how to do that in the report setting. You only seem to be able to select a specific device or site rather than port group. Is it possible? Also, is it possible to put that on a dashlet?
    thanks for your help

    Thanks for that Mahavir
Yes, I worked that out a little while ago, and can now see interface utilization by port group on the Performance > Network Interface page. I do have another question however (well two)....
I wanted to add graph over time for the utilization to the detail dashboard, but nothing shows up, even though I see the utilization in the network interface page, so I'm sure the monitoring is deployed. Why is the data missing from the graphs?
Also, I wanted to see interface packets per second graphs, but see that is not part of any default template, so I created a customer SNMP template from the IF-MIB to do this, but I can only deploy that against sites/devices or a list of interfaces, and not port groups. Why can't I deploy a customer SNMP template against a port group?

  • Solaris Cluster 3.3 on VMware ESX 4.1

    Hi there,
I am trying to setup Solaris Cluster 3.3 on Vmware ESX 4.1
My first question is: Is there anyone out there setted up Solaris Cluster on vmware accross boxes?
    My tools:
    Solaris 10 U9 x64
    Solaris Cluster 3.3
    Vmware ESX 4.1
    HP DL 380 G7
    HP P2000 Fibre Channel Storage
When I try to setup cluster, just next next next, it completes successfully. It reboots the second node first and then the itself.
After second node comes up on login screen, ping stops after 5 sec. Same either nodes!
I am trying to understand why it does that? I did every possibility to complete this job. Setted up quorum as RDM from VMware. Solaris has direct access to quorum disk now.
I am new to Solaris and I am having the errors below. If someone would like to help me it will be much appreciated!
Please explain me in more details i am new bee in solaris :) Thanks!
I need help especially on error: /proc fails to mount periodically during reboots.
Here is the error messages. Is there any one out there setted up Solaris Cluster on ESX 4.1 ?

    Hi, thanks for reply,
I have already followed the steps also on your links but no joy on this.
What i noticed here is cluster seems to be buggy. Because i have tried to install cluster 3.3 on physical hardware and it gave me excat same error messages! interesting isnt it?
Please see errors below that I got from on top of VMware and also on Solaris Physical hardware installation:

We have set up two ESX hosts (ESX 3.5 U4) and have two SLES10 64 clustered VMs with OES2 installed. We have two RDMs set up with a split brain partition (quorum drive). We have no problems setting all of this up and when it works it works well. What we have problems with is when we do maintainence on the ESX hosts.
We get the dreaded "Unable to power up machine due to afile lock" on the second clustered VM when we power it up after doing maintaince on the ESX host. The first clustered VM is powered up and ok but we are unable to clear the lock as ESX does not see it. VMware does not support this and Novell seems to point us to VMware. The only way we have cleared this up is by shutting down the ESX host for about 10 minutes and then powering it back up. This clears the lock sometimes. The most extreme case was we had to power down the SAN to release the lock.
There seems to be nothing specific on the web about our proble, only similar cases. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

  • VMware ESX + Sun Cluster - is it supported?

Do you know if Sun Cluster installed on top of VMware ESX can be supported by Sun/Oracle?
Do you know what requirements newly installed cluster has to meet in order to satisfy Sun's support contract?

The binaries (executables) in an Oracle home are "linked" (link edited?) to the OS libraries on each server where the software is installed.
Unless the OS is IDENTICAL on each of the IDENTICAL(HW) servers -- that would share the Oracle home--, you could be in trouble.
The only supported configuration (I know of) where the Oracle binaries are shared between servers is 9i RAC. On 10g RAC the binaries are installed on each server.
Other wise I'd say it's NOT recommended, besides you don't save anything (execpt a cooupl of Gigs disk space).

  • 2 node Sun Cluster 3.2, resource groups not failing over.

    Hello,
I am currently running two v490s connected to a 6540 Sun Storagetek array. After attempting to install the latest OS patches the cluster seems nearly destroyed. I backed out the patches and right now only one node can process the resource groups properly. The other node will appear to take over the Veritas disk groups but will not mount them automatically. I have been working on this for over a month and have learned alot and fixed alot of other issues that came up, but the cluster is just not working properly. Here is some output.

    Thanks

My advice is to open a service call, provided you have a service contract with Oracle. There is much more information required to understand that specific configuration and to analyse the various log files. This is beyond what can be done in this forum.
From your description I can guess that you want to failover a resource group between non-global zones. And it looks like the zone coins01:zcoins01 is reported to not be in cluster membership.
Obviously node coins01 needs to be a cluster member. If it is reported as online and has joined the cluster, then you need to verify if the zone zcoins01 is really properly up and running.
Specifically you need to verify that it reached the multi-user milestone and all cluster related SMF services are running correctly (ie. verify "svcs -x" in the non-global zone).
You mention Veritas diskgroups. Note that VxVM diskgroups are handled in the global cluster level (ie. in the global zone). The VxVM diskgroup is not imported for a non-global zone. However, with SUNW.HAStoragePlus you can ensure that file systems on top of VxVM diskgroups can be mounted into a non-global zone. But again, more information would be required to see how you configued things and why they don't work as you expect it.

  • Vmware esx 4.1 (not cisco custom iso) supported on ucs C 24 M3

    Hi,
In a test plant I need to install esxi 4.1, not in production network, as it can be done without buying the vmware licenze (custom cisco iso)?
Someone did install esxi 4.1 (not cisco custom iso) with success on ucs c serie 24 M3 ?

no, because the environment is a test plant and the customer not want to buy the licenses for vmware, and I saw on the website that the version 4.1 (not custom cisco iso) is free
I can install the free version 4.1 on ucs ?

  • Best Practices - VMware ESX 4.0 in a Cisco Environment?

    Hello,
I'm presently designing a VMware ESX 4.0 deployment and integrating it with our Cisco environment.  I've found the following document:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Data_Center/vmware/VMware.html "VMware Infrastructure 3 in a Cisco Network Environment" and I was just wondering if there was a newer document applicable to ESX 4.x or if these best practices still applied?
I'm particularly interested in proper vlan design for the various port-groups with in ESX and etherchannel configuration between ESX hosts and Cisco switches.
    Thanks,
    Rob

Well, in that this is a Storage group, I'll answer froma storage noetworking point of view.
ESX hosts are no different to any other host,  Just stick with the standard best practice of single initiator zoning and you'll be fine.
As a slight aside, from an array point of view, I've tended to configure all the pWWN's of the whole cluster into one "host" definition, as this makes LUN mapping easier.

  • Vmware esx 4 to hyper-v 2012 e2

    Hi,
We need to do a convert from Vmware esx 4.0 which is managed by vsphere 4.1 to hyper 2012 R2 Cluster
I did look at SCVMM but 2012 does not support hyper-v 2012 R2 I believe
SCVMM 2012 sp1 Does not support vmware esx 4.0 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/gg697603.aspx)
What are the options available here as we just need to do a virtual to virtual migration but google did not help.

    Hi,
The MVMC Supports conversion of virtual machines from VMware vSphere 5.5, VMware vSphere 5.1, and VMware vSphere 4.1 hosts Hyper-V virtual machines.

  • Public logon group not showing up

    Hi everybody
I am trying to create a SAPGui entry for logon group access to customer ECC6.0 system.
I have configured the service and sapmsg.ini file.
I was told by customer sysadmin that PUBLIC logon group was created but in the list of logon groups I can only see SPACE.
Moreover, if I complete the procedure with SPACE logon group, when I try to login it won't succeed, warning that even the client number is wrong (?!).
    My questions are:
    - how to retrieve message server number and port (even though I am fairly certain that they are ok, otherwise the Logon group list wouldn't have been populated... right?)
    - what might be the cause for the PUBLIC logon group not to show up
    Thanks, points will be awarded
    Vincenzo

    Hi,
Since you get such strange errors, it almost seems like you are trying to logon to the wrong server.
Please check sapmsg.ini again to see that the correct hostname/ip-address is entered.
Also, did you notice if the server name is correct at the logon screen ?
Every Dialog instance or Central Instance gets logon group SPACE by default. Then, when you create logon groups for the instance,
    the group SPACE will disappear.
In some installations the central instance and the message server both uses the instance number of the central instance as a base to calculate the ports.
    CentralInstance/DialogInstance = 3200, MsgServer=3600
but, on some installations (E g Windows Cluster) this could be different.
There you might have something like:
    CentralInstance/DialogInstance = 3200 and the MsgServer=3601
You need to ask your sysadmin for message server port and host.

  • C210 ESXI Port Group

    Hi,
I had an issue where traffic on one of my ESXI port groups stopped passing traffic.
Port Group name :UCM  vnic 1&2         -     Catalyst 4500     Etherchannel     Mode on, access vlan 100
Port Group name :Unity/Uccx vnic 3&4 -     Catalyst 4500     Etherchannel     Mode on, access vlan 100
My setup was in my UC environment was configured with 2 x vNics for my UCM VMs and 2 x vNics for my Unity/IUCCX VMs.
I am not trunking over the Etherchanels, and  my Cisco switches are configured with mode on, and are access ports in Vlan 100.
Traffic stopped passing over Port Group Unity/UCCX and I was unable to access the VMs from the switch side of the network. As all VMs are in the same vlan, I moved my Unity and UCCX VMs into Port Group UCM and then they were reachable from the network. Only Port Group Unity/Uccx had failed.
The only way I could resolve the issue was to power down all VMs and reboot the C210 server.
They had been operational for a period of time before the fault appeared. Any ideas why this may have happed or how to resolve without a complete server reboot would be appreciated.
    thanks
    Ian.

    Ian,
I would suggest you to open a TAC service request with following information
    ESXi logs ( vm-support command output )
    CIMC show tech
    Upstream Switch show tech
Approx date & time of the problem event
So it worked when we moved the VMs to other port group on the vSwitch, right ?
We need to look into VMware messages log file for this event.

  • Network problems with Oracle Linux 5.7 on Vmware ESX 4.1

We recently installed Oracle Linux 5.7 64 on Vmware in order to run OVM Manager 3.02. The VM experiences random frequent network connectivity problems. There are no errors showing up in the network stats. The Vmware environment hosts many production VMs with no issues. We did have some trouble configuring Vmware tools with the uek kernel, so we booted the vm with the base kernel and we were then able to configure Vmware tools with no problems. We have tried running the VM on two different ESX servers with no improvement.
The network connectivity problems persist even with the base kernel. We get random ping failures into and out of the VM, and random disconnects of ssh terminal sessions.
I am not very experienced with linux, being primarily a vmware and aix admin. Any tips on stabilizing Oracle Linux on Vmware are greatly appreciated otherwise, I will have to beg for a new server to host the OVM manager.
    Thanks,
    Bob

The network connectivity problems persist even with the base kernel. We get random ping failures into and out of the VM, and random disconnects of ssh terminal sessions. Before you check on software and driver updates you might want to check your hardware settings. I've seen problems like this before when using a bad network cable or having a duplex mismatch. The later can happen when changing from a router to a network switch and configuring the switch for fixed full duplex. Depending on which end you sit you won't even see any network errors, but packages will disappear depending on traffic. Make sure you have set server's NIC and network switch port to the same topology ie. fixed or auto-negotiate, but not mixed. You can use the "ethtool" on the Linux system to verify the current settings.

  • How to tell what was the latest patch installed on VMware ESX Server 3i, 3.5.0, 207095

    Hello Guys,
I have been running an old server that was installed as a test system on a DELL workstation - Optiplex GX620 (32 bit).
During the installation I had to confirgure the file: /usr/lib/vmware/installer/Core/TargetFilter.py to change the following line:
    "return interface.GetInterfaceType() == ScsiInterface.SCSI_IFACE_TYPE_IDE" to read:
"return interface.GetInterfaceType() == ScsiInterface.SCSI_IFACE_TYPE_ISCSI" this made it worked and I have been using it for 3 years now. However, at this time I was hoping to update it with the latest patches and updates and I cannot figure out if I have ESXi or just ESX, nor what was my last update and what is required next.
I have used this command to get the following output:
    # vmware -v
    VMware ESX Server 3i 3.5.0 build-207095
... I believe the 3i indicates that I have an ESXi 3.5.0 but is build-207095 the same buid as ESXi 3.5.0 Update 5?
If not, how do I go about updating it? What is the KB # I should download?
I can manage it using vSphere Client 5.5 and I can SSH into it using Putty.
Note: When I run... "# esxupdate --bundle=ESXe350-201302401-I-SG.zip update" from within the folder where its at in the datastore, nothing happens... just a new line is scrolled.

... is there any further update for this system? I believe so as the Heartbleed patch etc. was not around when I was installing this server back in 2010.

    Hello Richardson Porto,
I wanted to tell you that I appreciate the help so far.
Also wanted to point out to you, that the KB indicated above is older than Update 5, which from your instructions is what I have installed. That KB is for U2.
Now, the document definitely has step by step instructions on installing, querying etc. But my problem is ... NOT ALL COMMANDS WORK FOR ME!
This is why I am here because all the instructions I have been reading does not work with my flavor of ESX 3.5.0, 207095... WHY? It has me stumped.
For example, here are some commands the doc asked me to do and they failed: (Note that I had to unzip the folder on my windows box and upload it to /tmp using vSphere Client)
    /tmp # ls
    ESX350-201302402-BG      ESX350-201302402-BG.zip  vmhsdaemon-0
    /tmp # unzip ESX350-201302402-BG.zip
-ash: unzip: not found                                                                                          -----------------------THIS COMMAND WAS NOT FOUND ?
    /tmp # cd ESX350-201302402-BG
    /tmp/ESX350-201302402-BG # esxupdate info
Invalid command info                                                                                          -----------------------THIS COMMAND WAS INVALID ?
/tmp/ESX350-201302402-BG # esxupdate update                                       -----------------------NOTHING HAPPENED HERE ?
    /tmp/ESX350-201302402-BG # ls -lh

    /tmp/ESX350-201302402-BG #
NOTE: All these commands were run sequentially and I just copied and paste it from my SSH Client (PuTTy.exe)
Is there a toolkit I need to install to have these commands or what really am I missing here? Host is in Maintenance Mode and the 1 VM that's on it is off!
I am going to start a new discussion with this NEW ISSUE, since the Heading of this DISCUSSION has already been SOLVED! Thanks again!
