Volume Name as GUID

Hi
I have a problem in mapping Name attribute from WIn32_Volume WMI class to Name in Win32_PerfFormattedData_PerfDisk_LogicalDisk WMI class to get performance data.
Issue is :
"Name"  attribute value is "\\?\Volume{1bf980f3-043c-11e0-bb0d-68b599b9b40c}\" in Win32_Volume  and Name in other WMI class is like HardDiskVolume1.  This works only if drive letter is assigned where Name matches in two WMI
classes.
Is it because the volume is neither assigned drive letter or mount path?
Also the Powershell command (Get-VMHostVolume ) retruns proper name like c:\clusterstrorage\volume1

  • Disk GUID shown at the Failover Cluster Manager instead of the NTFS Mount Volume Name

    Dear Team
    I have built windows 2012 R2 fail over cluster. The sql server 2012 has been installed in cluster mode. When we add share disk for database it showing like General DBs\\?\Volume{665480bd-12d9-11dd-92ea-001cc442e304}\
    Can you Please explain why it is showing in GUID like this. While in 2008 it is showing as
    O:\Miscellaneous\General DBs .
    Also is it normal to have storage configuration in GUID in win2k12 R2 faliover
    cluster.
    We need to have this NTFS mount volume name in our win2012 server. Pl reply
    Thanks

    No problem it happens if you have drive letter conflict too at times.
    So you can even change drive letter now also, but that must be available by that time.
    However you should follow below method:
    1. Disks initialization, formatting, drive letter assignation and grouping for SQL Cluster should be planned and worked out first before sql server installation and testing failover nicely.
    2. Once you are sure that drive letters are proper and failing is happening fine then you can start installing SQL server.
    3. In future too if you assign existing drive letters of sql server to some other disk then same issues will happen.
    So please be careful on this for example if system database disk drivers get changed then what will happen, even sql server will not for you as drive letters will be missing as system  will get adjust with the drive letter without caring about that
    disk drive letter was carrying system db or just user db.

  • "A Bad Filename or volume name encountered" ?!!!

    I searched but I didnt find an answer for this problem. I get the message "Bad Filename or volume name encountered" when I try to play a video file with Quicktime. When I try to add it to my playlist on iTunes it doesnt add it. All of this happened after I converted the file to a Quicktime format (.mov). Also I tried to convert it to iPod video format (.mp4) and the same thing happened. I actually converted some other files to those two formats and they worked. I changed the video size and frame rate and the audio bit rate , sample rate, channel around to match the iPod requirements but it still didnt work. Does anyone know what I should do?!
      Windows XP

    actuially providing as much detail is best to get an answer. Like what are you missing? Where did you get this video from? what did you use to convert the video? Did you follow the instrucitons to convert the video to a .mov format and then to a .mp4 format? You see as much information is best to get an educated answer. Since your new here you didnt know that so your ok. And you did something MANY people dont seem to do and thats actually search b4 you posted.

  • Music files moved to a new network drive with a new volume name

    I had to replace my old network attached harddisk which held all my music ( mainly mp3 ) files. This drive was automounted and had the name "MUSICHD". My new network attached storage device ( LACIE Ethernet Disk mini 500GB ) has the volume name "SHARE" and it's not possible to change it.
    I copied all the files onto the the new drive, but now I have to tell iTunes that the files are not longer on a volume called MUSICHD. Could somebody be so kind and give me an advice how to do it. Shure I could re-import all the music files, but I don't like to loose all my ratings, playlists, etc.
    -wolfgang
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iPod 5G

    to be precise. I don't let iTunes manage my files. All my mp3 files are on a NAS ( Network Attached Storage ) device ( it's a 300 GB Harddisk with a 1GBit network connection from Buffalow ).
    If I add mp3 files to my library I first copy it to the NAS device and than drag and drop the files to the iTunes library. So iTunes only manages the links to that files. Files are not imported or copied to/with iTunes.
    Now I have to replace that NAS device by another one. Due to this replacement I have to change the network volume-name of the device. This share is part of the link in the iTunes database for each file.
    If you look into the xml file you'll find something like this:
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/SHARE/MUSIK/Blues/Dupree,%20Champion%20Jack/Blues%20From%20the%20Gutter/Dupree,%20Cha mpion%20Jack%20-%20Blues%20From%20the%20Gutter%20-%2001%20-%20Strollin'.mp3</str ing>
    So the "simple" question is. How to tell iTunes that all my music files are now on another volume?

  • IPhoto can't find original photos after volume name change

    I had to reformat my drive and do a fresh install of Mountain Lion. I was pleased that the Migration Assistant imported all the user accounts, apps, etc. from a Time Machine backup. Never could have done *that* with Windows...
    However, in iPhoto, I *do not* copy pictures from my Pictures folder into the iPhoto library and iPhoto can't find them. I expect that this is because I changed the volume name when I reformatted the drive, which is embedded somewhere in the iPhoto package in my Pictures folder.
    Does anyone know which iPhoto files I can edit or batch edit to change references from the old volume name to the new one? Is this information stored in text or XML files that I can edit or is it embedded in binary files? I thought I might be able to reimport the photos from the current volume and iPhoto would sort out the duplicates (not a great option if I get prompted for each one though...) but I wasn't sure if that would preserver events, faces, etc.
    When I try to rebuild the iPhoto library, I get a dialog indicating each file cannot be found on the volume. While it provides an option to browse for the location, this isn't practical due to the 1000's of photos and movies on the drive.
    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    As OT says, the primary reason not to run a Referenced Library, and, most especially, not one where you have the Library on one Volume and the photos on another.
    You're going to have this problem again and again any time you make a change to your hardware set up - including upgrading your machine and so on.
    Going forward: Do you have Aperture? This has a command to Locate Referenced Masters which should help. Other than that, how are you at hacking SQL databases? That's what this guy did:

  • Start Up Manager not showing Volume names?

    I have a G4 DA 800 with 10.5.8 on the main IDE and two partitions , one for OS 9 and one for 10.3.9 Volumes on a FW 400 Drive.
    Everything runs pretty well except when I've been using Start Up Manager (Option Boot) the names of the Volumes are not there. There's only an X or the Finder for OS 9 and for the Volume names there is only a small cursor line.
    Is there a way to get the Volume names to appear again in Start Up Manager?
    Thank you!
    -Mike

    Hi, Mike -
    In Startup Manager the volume names are read before any OS is loaded, of course, so the cause should not be OS-specific.
    Try resetting the PRAM on the affected machine.
    Do the proper names appear on the desktop when the machine is booted to OS 9?
    If the names are longer than 31 characters, then they could be misread. OSX has a software solution to allow longer filenames, but OS 9 and the machine's hardware modes do not. There might also be an issue with non-text characters (other than a space, comma, or period) interfereing.
    If all else is good, try renaming the volumes while the machine is booted to OS 9 - there may be a difference in OS 9 vs. OSX regarding how the names are stored, hence accessed by the machine while in hardware mode.

  • Help. I accidentally formatted by the device name not the volume name when trying fresh install osx Mountain lion.

    I was trying to do a fresh instal of Mountain Lion. By fresh I mean clean.
    Firstly, my iMac disc drive isn't really working to well, so I have Mountain Lion on a usb.
    I started up and held the option key.
    Entered into disc utility mode, and started doing everything correct.
    Then near at the end I when i'm required to select a start up disc it doesnt show anything... Help?
    I checked around online and saw this tutorially and notice I had done something different.
    http://macs.about.com/od/MountainLion/ss/How-To-Perform-A-Clean-Install-Of-Os-X- Mountain-Lion-On-A-Startup-Drive.htm
    on page 2. where it says
    When Disk Utility opens, select your Mac's startup volume from the list of devices. If you never changed its name, the startup volume will be listed as Macintosh HD. Be sure to select the volume name and not the device name, which will usually be the name of the physical drive, for instance, "500 GB WDC WD5."
    I think I may have selected the device name. Is this the cause of my problem?
    Can I fix this ? Please help?
    I live in Auckland in New Zealand, I don't have any apple stores here

    Ok, I realized that won't work, I don't think, because you can't enable it on your Mac.
    However, if you have another Mac, you can use Firewire Target Disk Mode to install. Boot your Mac while holding down the T key. You will see a FireWire symbol on the screen. Then, connect the two with a Firewire cable. Your Mac hard drive will show up on the other. Try to install onto that.
    This may not work, depending on the other Mac. If it is similar to yours, it should.
    I'm not sure if you can do it the other way. If you put the DVD into the other Mac and boot it into Target Disk Mode, then boot yours holding down the option key, you may be able to select the DVD on the other Mac as the startup.
    This very old article seems to indicate it will work: http://lowendmac.com/misc/06/0914.html

  • Beware of spaces in volume names

    Many, many install scripts have failed during my upgrade due to having a volume name with a space in it. If you have any non unix compatible characters in your volume name be sure to rename the volume before upgrading.

    Hi David,
       One method for handling spaces is to simply remove their role as a field separator. I like to restore the field separator after I'm through with the alteration, although that's not required for this simple example. Here's one way of doing what you want:
    <PRE>#!/bin/sh
    DIRS='Folder 1
    Folder 2'
    echo $DIRS; echo
    OLDIFS="$IFS"
    IFS=$'\n'
    for dir in $DIRS
    do
    IFS="$OLDIFS"
    echo "Here is a directory"
    echo $dir
    done</PRE>
    Since the DIRS variable now contains a newline, I've added an additional echo statement to verify that two passes through the loop were in fact occurring. Of course you don't have to use a newline as a field separator. Any character that is not allowed in a filename will suffice.
       I apologize for the late reply; I hope you're still listening. I just learned of this discussion. The discussion now called "UNIX" used to be named "Command Line". I didn't realize until this week that Apple had created a second one.

  • Volume name of File path / getAbsolutePath, this is driving me insane

    Hello,
    i spent another several hours on this issue i'm having and i think i'm going nuts :=)
    so heres the problem:
    System: Mac OS, two partitions "Mac" and "DATA"
    i have a file "file1.ogg" on the "main" partition (where Mac OS x resides) in the directory tecxx/Music/file1.ogg
    i have a file "file2.ogg" on my NTFS data partition, in the subfolder /DJMUSIC/file2.ogg
    so far, so good.
    when i process these 2 files in my application with a File object and the method "getAbsolutePath()" i get:
    1) /Users/tecx/Music/file1.ogg
    2) /Volumes/DATA/DJMUSIC/file2.ogg
    note that path 1 does not contain any volume name at all, while path 2 contains not just the volume name, but "/Volumes/" in front of the path.
    allright, now here comes the problem. i have another application which uses these 2 files (a dj software). it spits out the filenames of these two tracks in an xml file with these path names:
    1) /Mac/Users/tecxx/Music/file1.ogg
    2) /Data/DJMUSIC/file2.ogg
    Note that this application adds the Volume name to both paths, but NOT /Volumes/.
    what i need to do now is match the filenames against each other. when i process the xml file of the dj app, i extract the filepath, and need to find it in my internal database of my application. but how do i do that, if java returns such strange names, one time without any volume-identifier at all, and the other time with a volume-identifier AND "/Volumes" as a prefx ?
    seriously, this is bugging me for over a week now and i spent the entire day trying to fix this (manually adding "/Volumes/" to the paths, trying different combinations of getAbsolutePath, getCanonicalPath, toURL.toExternalForm; etc,etc), but isn't there an easy solution to get the volume name AND path name of a file somehow?
    in short, i'd like to have a function always return something like this:
    // returns /Mac/somedirectory/somename.ext
    // or        /Data/otherdirectory/someothername.ext
    String getFullPathName(File f)
        return f.getVolumeName() + f.getAbsolutePath();
    }but how do i do the first part (getVolumeName)?
    please help or i will kill myself (just kidding :)
    cheers,
    robert

    What program is generating the XML file? What operating system is the third-party software running on?
    I only ask because in my opinion, you should just be working with the absolute pathname, and clearly the third-party app is not doing that.
    >
    traktor dj studio, latest version. it runs either on windows or mac os x. in my case, i run it on windows, but many of my app users run it on mac os x.
    >
    What is the purpose of this application? Is it a script that you're only trying to use on your computer, with your current configuration? Are you trying to distribute it?
    >
    my app has the purpose of managing the song database for traktor dj studio (if you want to take a look.. here's the webpage: http://rrs.at/trakker/ )
    yes, i'm distributing it.
    >
    However, if this is just a script that you want to hack up for yourself, just do some string manipulation on your absolute paths:
    String file = myFile.getAbsolutePath();
    if ( file.startsWith("/Volumes/") {
       //replace "/Volumes" with empty string
    } else {
       //prefix "/Mac"
    }so, this is where i've come to myself. the first part - adding "/volumes/" works fine. but the second part will fail - as i don't know the volume name of the boot partitions of my users. it is not necessarily "/Mac" - thats only true on my own machine :)
    do have a nice idea for me how to solve that?
    i thought about creating a "new File" object for the path i'm reading from the xml, and then iterating my entire "database" of files, creating another "new File" object for each one, and comparing them with "equals". that might work, but that would mean, that for every path in the xml file (up to 2000 or more) i would have to compare to every path in my database (again, up to 2000 or maybe many more). i don't even want to calculate how many cpu calls this will generate... the hashtable lookup would just be way faster, if i could get the paths right.
    anyway, thanks for all the replies yet, you're really helpful. i'm aware of the filepath differences between windows and mac, and thanks again for your thorough explanations, but as i can't change the behaviour of this third party app i'm stuck with a solution here (and my mac os experience is near zero, but it is starting to get better ;=)

  • Why OS X Yosemite change primary volume name (core storage)

    Hi to everyone,
    I have several Macs. I like to make fresh installs. My experience tell me that fresh installs makes everything work better.
    On my iMac, making the fresh install of OS X Yosemite don't change primary volume name (has a not HDD fusion). O my macbook pro retina (late 2013) OS X Yosemite change the primary volume name and equal to the partition name, that is, change it to a core storage disk. I could understand if it was a fusion disk, but in this case it is just an SSD of 256 GB. It is a bug of OS X Yosemite installer? If this shouldn't happen, anyone could tell how can I solve that, that is, make a fresh install on my macbook pro retina without change the primary volume name.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

    Safe boot your computer.
    Turn off computer. Hold shift key. Turn on computer. Keep holding shift. Once progress bar starts moving let go. If you can then login and use your computer it is not the OS it is some other application installed on the computer that is causing the issue.

  • Old volume names still appears on client

    Dear reader,
    Hopefully a simple question. After changing the volume name on the server the old name still appears on the client using df. I am not sure it is a big problem but as I have also other problems, this one is may be easy to fix and potentially related.
    The old name was MiniMax HD and is changed to MiniMaxHD. ( I will never put spaces in a volume name again)
    See also attached result of df from the client. The volumes on the server ore correct.
    Thanks
    PS do not hesitate if you have other comments on this volume list as I also have other problems.
