VPN Remote Access on ASA5510 version 7.1(2)

Hi folks,
I have surprising thing when firstly configure IPsec_ra on asa 5510 with asa version 7.1(2). I usually configure this on PIX platform and never failed.
I use standard VPN remote access configuration with using provided default tunnel group.
Bellow is the configuration:
username xxx password xxx
ip local pool VPN_POOL 192.168.21.1-192.168.21.100 mask 255.255.255.0
isakmp enable Outside
isakmp policy 10 authentication pre-share
isakmp policy 10 encryption 3des
isakmp policy 10 hash sha
isakmp policy 10 group 2
isakmp policy 10 lifetime 86400
crypto ipsec transform-set ESP-3DES-MD5 esp-3des esp-md5-hmac
crypto dynamic-map dyn1 1 set transform-set ESP-3DES-MD5
crypto map vpnmap 1 ipsec-isakmp dynamic dyn1
crypto map vpnmap interface Outside
tunnel-group DefaultRAGroup general-attributes
address-pool VPN_POOL
tunnel-group DefaultRAGroup ipsec-attributes
pre-shared-key xxx
I have enable command "sysopt connection permit-vpn", here i didn't find "permit-ipsec". Are those the same thing?
I have issued debug crypto ipsec and isakmp but does not give me enough information for configuartion error.
Aug 13 11:07:33 [IKEv1]: Group = DefaultRAGroup, IP = **.**.**.**, Removing peer from peer table failed, no match!
Aug 13 11:07:33 [IKEv1]: Group = DefaultRAGroup, IP = **.**.**.**, Error: Unable to remove PeerTblEntry
What is missing here? Please advice...
fyi: I use cisco vpn client v4.8.

  • Cisco ASA disable command line interface (CLI) vor VPN Remote Access users

    Hi,
I have local database for a couple of VPN Remote Access users on our Cisco ASA 5510 firewall. When adding users i asigned them the privilege leve 0. Is it possible to completly disable CLI for theses users as they will only be using VPN Remote Access and do not need to access the appliance cli.
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind Regards,
    Marco

    Hi,
We will need to use the vpn-filter or the ssh command to block ssh from the vpn pool.
    Regards,

  • Remote Access VPN - add new internal IP

    Hi
I have a existing Cisco VPN client configuration into ASA 5510 for remote access.
    Group name : ISETANLOT10
    Group password  : xxxx
    IP pool : lot10ippool, 172.27.17.240 - 172.27.17.245
    enycrption : 3DES
    authentication : SHA
the connection was successful and i was able to ping to the internal server of 172.47.1.10.
Now there is request for the same VPN remote access to be able to ping access a new server inside LAN, 172.57.1.10 & 172.57.1.20
But with the same VPN access, i was unable to ping both new IP.
How can i add in the both IP to be able to ping using the same remote access VPN config?
I attached below existing config (edited version)

The remote access VPN should allow the connection but I am guessing your ASA doesn't know how to route to the two new destinations.
You have a name and static route for the working server at 172.47.1.10:
name 172.47.1.10 NarayaServer description Naraya Server
    route inside NarayaServer 255.255.255.255 172.27.17.100 1
..but no equivalent for the two new hosts. As a result, any traffic from the ASA destined for them will attempt to use the default route (via the outside interface).
    If you add:
    route inside 172.57.1.10 255.255.255.255 172.27.17.100
    route inside 172.57.1.20 255.255.255.255 172.27.17.100
(assuming that's your correct gateway), it should work.

    Hi David Castro,
    Thanks for your answer,
I configed following your guide, but it have not worked yet. I saw that I cannot ping IP gateway Internet . I using ADSL Internet and config PPPoE  and my router receive IP from ISP. Here show ip int brief :
GigabitEthernet0/0         192.168.1.1     YES NVRAM  up                    up
GigabitEthernet0/1         unassigned      YES NVRAM  up                    up
GigabitEthernet0/2         unassigned      YES NVRAM  up                    up
Dialer1                    210.245.54.49   YES IPCP   up                    up
Dialer2                    101.99.7.73     YES IPCP   up                    up

But I cannot ping Interface Dialer 1, so may be VPN is does not worked. Do you have some ideal ?
    Thanks very much !

  • What is/are the best Remote Access/VPN services for my Mac system?

    2009 Macbook Pro
    2009 Macbook
    2010 iMac
    2 iPad 2s
    2 iPhone 4s
    Computers on Snow Leopard
    iOS 5
    Everything is updated
    I want :
    1.  to have everything working together, with remote access from anywhere on the internet, file sharing, streaming & transfer.
    2.  the security of a VPN connection.
I will soon update my existing router w/an Airport Extreme.  What VPN/Remote Access client(s) should I get? Is there one solution for both jobs, or do I need to get more than one service?  I have looked at LogMeIn, Witopia.  Thanks for the help.

I've been down this road and settled on a much simpler solution...
VPNs are ok... but the performance is bad, they send TCP packets inside TCP packets... which is a bad thing, some connections completely break down. security is o-k, but openVPN is much better yet more complicated to set up. Also you have to go through all the mess of setting up the server.
I tried using VPNs for a while, and then instead settled with tunneling specific connections over ssh... it is more secure and elegant, there is no server setup, however it is not seemless.. you have to set up the connections/ports individually each time, this can get messy if you want access to lots of things at once.
I eventually came accross sshuttle, and this is what i have stuck with because it's just bloody great... it's like a VPN but uses SSH. So you don't have to set up a VPN server... you just need access to an ssh server (i.e your home mac with "remote login" (ssh) enabled, and your router to foward ssh requests to that machine).
not only do you not have to mess around with server configs, but it also give far better performance, stability, and the security of ssh (i.e whichever cypher you want). This is because unlike VPN, sshuttle pulls the TCP packets apart before sending them over SSH (which is allready using TCP) and then re-assembles them the other side with python. the result is comparably better performance and stability than VPN protocols.
you can route individual IPs from the servers subnet, or tell it to automatically find and merge all host names / IPs it can find with your current subnet.
    Theory of Operation
sshuttle is not exactly a VPN, and not exactly port forwarding. It's kind of both, and kind of neither.
It's like a VPN, since it can forward every port on an entire network, not just ports you specify. Conveniently, it lets you use the "real" IP addresses of each host rather than faking port numbers on localhost.
On the other hand, the way it works is more like ssh port forwarding than a VPN. Normally, a VPN forwards your data one packet at a time, and doesn't care about individual connections; ie. it's "stateless" with respect to the traffic. sshuttle is the opposite of stateless; it tracks every single connection.
You could compare sshuttle to something like the old Slirp program, which was a userspace TCP/IP implementation that did something similar. But it operated on a packet-by-packet basis on the client side, reassembling the packets on the server side. That worked okay back in the "real live serial port" days, because serial ports had predictable latency and buffering.
But you can't safely just forward TCP packets over a TCP session (like ssh), because TCP's performance depends fundamentally on packet loss; it must experience packet loss in order to know when to slow down! At the same time, the outer TCP session (ssh, in this case) is a reliable transport, which means that what you forward through the tunnel never experiences packet loss. The ssh session itself experiences packet loss, of course, but TCP fixes it up and ssh (and thus you) never know the difference. But neither does your inner TCP session, and extremely screwy performance ensues.
sshuttle assembles the TCP stream locally, multiplexes it statefully over an ssh session, and disassembles it back into packets at the other end. So it never ends up doing TCP-over-TCP. It's just data-over-TCP, which is safe.
Anyway, you can find it on github here https://github.com/apenwarr/sshuttle
if you uncomfortable using the command line, someone has also bundled it into an app here: https://github.com/apenwarr/sshuttle/commits/dist/macos
IMPORTANT, the latest version invokes a bug in one of apple's drivers after a while which causes a kernel panic, (this isn't the same as the bug where you have to reset your network interface like it says in the readme, this WILL cause a kernel panic) stick with version 0.53 untill ether Apple fixes the bug, or sshuttle stops antagonising it. 0.53 works perfectly at the moment. you can ether install git and clone the specific version or download the 0.53 app here instead:
    http://mac.softpedia.com/progDownload/sshuttle-Download-97917.html
alternatively, if your loging in from linux there aren't any problems with 0.60 because the system would have different dirvers of course.
One last note... you said you wanted everything to work together, one thing that will not work over VPNs, SSH, and sshuttle is bojour... this is significant because things like AFP shares wont pop up automatically, you will have to specify them ... i.e command+k in finder and type AFP://192.168.0.x or VNC://192.168.0.x etc this is because none of these options support multicasting which bonjour requires. This isn't such a big deal so long as you know what services are available on your machine and how to manually connect to them (like i said above)

  • Remote Access VPN - Unable to Access LAN / Inside Network

    Hi,
I am facing a problem with Cisco ASA remote access VPN, the remote client is connected to VPN and receiving IP address but the client is not able to ping or telnet any internal network.
I have attached running configuration for your reference. Please let me know I miss any configuartion.
    FW : ASA5510
    Version : 8.0
Note : Site to Site VPN is working without any issues
    Thanks
    Jamal

    Hi,
    Very nice network diagram
Are you saying that originally the VPN Client user is behind the Jeddah ASA?
If this is true wouldnt it be wiser to just use the already existing L2L VPN between these sites?
In real situation I think the VPN Client would only be needed when you are outside either Head Quarter or Jeddah Network. And since you tested it infront of the ASA and it worked there shouldnt be any problem.
Now to the reason why the VPN Client isnt working from behind the Jeddah ASA.
Can you check that the following configuration is found on the Jeddah ASA (Depending on the software level of the ASA the format of the command might change. I'm not 100% sure)
isakmp nat-traversal To enable NAT traversal globally, check that ISAKMP is enabled (you can enable it with the isakmp enable command) in global configuration mode and then use the isakmp nat-traversal command. If you have enabled NAT traversal, you can disable it with the no form of this command.
    isakmp nat-traversal natkeepalive
    no isakmp nat-traversal natkeepalive
    Syntax Description
    natkeepalive
Sets the NAT keep alive interval, from 10 to 3600 seconds. The default is 20 seconds.
    Defaults
By default, NAT traversal (isakmp nat-traversal) is disabled.
    Command Modes
The following table shows the modes in which you can enter the command:
    Command Mode
    Firewall Mode
    Security Context
    Routed
    Transparent
    Single
    Multiple
    Context
    System
    Global configuration
    Command History
    Release
    Modification
    Preexisting
    This command was preexisting.
    7.2(1)
This command was deprecated. The crypto isakmp nat-traversal command replaces it.
Usage Guidelines Network Address Translation (NAT), including Port Address Translation  (PAT), is used in many networks where IPSec is also used, but there are a  number of incompatibilities that prevent IPSec packets from  successfully traversing NAT devices. NAT traversal enables ESP packets  to pass through one or more NAT devices.
The security appliance supports NAT traversal as described by Version 2  and Version 3 of the IETF "UDP Encapsulation of IPsec Packets" draft,  available at http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/ipsec-charter.html, and NAT traversal is supported for both dynamic and static crypto maps.
This command enables NAT-T globally on the security appliance. To disable in a crypto-map entry, use the crypto map set nat-t-disable command.
    Examples
The following example, entered in global configuration mode, enables  ISAKMP and then enables NAT traversal with an interval of 30 seconds:
    hostname(config)# isakmp enable
    hostname(config)# isakmp nat-traversal 30

  • Remote Access VPN Clients Cannot Access inside LAN

I have been asked to set up remote access VPN on an ASA 5505 that I previously had no invlovement with.  I have set it up the VPN using the wizard, they way I normally do, but the clients have no access to anything in the inside subnet, not even the inside interface IP address of the ASA.  Thay can ping each other.  The remote access policy below that I am working on is labeled VPNPHONE, address pool 172.16.20.1-10.  I do not need split tunneling to be enabled.  The active WAN interface is the one labeled outside_cable.

    Hi,
You have your "group-policy" set so that you have excluding some networks from being tunneled.
In this access-list named Local_LAN_Access you specify "0.0.0.0"
Doesnt this mean you are excluding all networks from being tunneled? In other words no traffic goes to your tunnel.
This access-list should only contain your local LAN network from where you are connecting with the VPN Client. If you dont need to access anything on your local LAN while having the VPN on, you don't even need this setting on. You could just tunnel all traffic instead of excluding some networks.

  • Remote access vpn connects to 5505 but cannot ping any servers

I have a cisco 5505 and am trying to configure it with ASDM 6.4.
My vpn client connects ok to the network but I am unable to reach any of the servers.
I'm sure its a simple configuration issue as I don't have much experience with Cisco configuation.
Any suggestions on where to look would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Graham

  • Remote Access VPN Problem with ASA 5505

After about ~1 year of having the Cisco VPN Client connecting to a ASA 5505 without any problems, suddenly one day it stops working. The client is able to get a connection to the ASA and browse the local network for only about 30 seconds after connection. After that, no access is available to the network behind the ASA. I tried everything that I can think of to try and troubleshoot the problem, but at this point I am just banging my head against a wall. Does anyone know what could cause this?
Here is the running cfg of the ASA

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I made the change that you requested by moving the VPN pool to the 192.168.3.0 network. Unfortunately, now traffic isn't flowing to the inside network at all. I was going to make a specific route as you suggested, but as far as I can see the routes are already being created correctly on the VPN client's end.
Here is the route print off of the computer behind the (test) client:

  • Remote Access VPN (ipsec) can ping LAN interface of firewall but not clients on the company network.

    The VPN will connect.
I can ping and connect to the ASA 5510 on it's LAN interface.
My problem is that I cannot ping or access anything on the LAN past the firewall. What am I doing wrong?
    Here is my config.
Result of the command: "show config"

Yeah, I figured out where my problem was.
My IP Local Pool range was the problem.
I was using 10.10.10.0 which conflicted with a point-to-point connection where the serial interfaces were numbered and using 10.10.10.1 and 10.10.10.2.
Traffic would leave the firewall, hit the intended host, go back through my core router, then off to the other network.
I changed my ip local pool to a different range (192.168.100.0) and my problem was solved.

  • ASA IPsec Remote Access VPN | NAT Question

We have a situation where a company that needs remote VPN access to our network is having an IP conflict with our subnet.  I know this is a common issue and can often be resolved on the client side by changing the metirc on the network interface, but I am looking for a better solution on our end so I do not have to suggest workarounds.
Part of the problem is likely that our subnet is "too big", but I'm not going to be changing that now.
We are using 10.0.0.0/24 and the remote is using 10.0.11.0/24 and 10.1.0.0./16
I played around with some NAT rules and feel that I am missing something  I am looking for suggestions, please.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
This depends on your ASA firewalls software version and partly on its current NAT configurations.
    I presume the following
    Interfaces "inside" and "outside"
VPN Pool network of 10.10.100.0/24 (or some 192/172 network)
    Software 8.2 and below
access-list VPN-POLICYNAT remark Static Policy NAT for VPN Client
    access-list VPN-POLICYNAT permit ip 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 10.10.100.0 255.255.255.0
    static (inside,outside) 192.168.10.0 access-list VPN-POLICYNAT
Key things to keep in mind with this software level is that if any of our internal hosts on the network 10.0.0.0/24 also have a "static" configuration that binds their local IP address to a public IP address then you might have to insert the above configuration and then remove the original "static" command and enter it back again.
This will change the order or the "static" commands so that the original "static" command wont override this new configuration as they are processed in order they are inserted to the configuration. The remove/add part is just to change their order in the configuration
    Software 8.3 and above
    object network LAN
    subnet 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0
    object network LAN-VPN
    subnet 192.168.10.0 255.255.255.0
    object-group network VPN-POOL
    subnet 10.10.100.0 255.255.255.0
    nat (inside,outside) 1 source static LAN LAN-VPN destination static VPN-POOL VPN-POOL
In the above configuration we do the same as in the older software versions configuration but we have the number "1" in the "nat" configuration which places it at the very top of your NAT configurations and therefore it applies. No need to remove any existing configuration and enter them again like in the old software
In addition to the above NAT configuration you naturally have to make sure that the traffic to the NATed LAN network goes to the VPN. So if using Split Tunnel the NAT network needs to be added to the VPN ACL. If using Full Tunnel then naturally everything should already be coming through the VPN. I imagine though that you are using Split Tunnel, or?
    Hope this helps

  • Can you create a Remote Access VPN connection to tunnel DMZ LAN and Inside Networks simultaneously?

I have a customer that has a ASA 5510 version 8.3 with IPSEC Client Access that includes some of their networks on the Inside interface.   The issue they are having is when their mobile users connect with the vpn client (which is using split tunneling), they can no longer access their web server applications that are running in the DMZ.   Without the client connected, they access the web servers via the external public IP.  Once they are connected via vpn, their default dns server becomes the internal AD DNS server, which resolves the DNS of the web servers to the private DMZ ip address.
Can a Remote Access VPN client connection be allowed to connect to both the DMZ interface and the Inside Interface? I had always only setup RA VPN clients to connect to networks on the Inside Interface.
I tried adding the DMZ network to the Split Tunnel list, but I could not access anything it while connected to vpn using the private IP addresses.

Yes, you should be able to access DMZ subnets as well if they are added to the split tunnel ACL. You could check the NAT exemption configuration for the DMZ and also check if the ASA is forwarding the packet through DMZ interface by configuring captures on the DMZ interface.
Share the configuration if you want help with the NAT exemption part.

  • Remote access VPN-unable to connect inside-URGENT

    Hi,
I have configured Remote access VPN in cisco ASA 5520.Whenever I am trying to connect from outside it's connecting fine.It aslo getting IP from pool but prob is i am unable to connect/ping inside nw.
Pls help me...how to resolve this issue.

I had the same problem on an IOS router (871). My solution was one of two things. I downloaded the most up-to-date version of the VPN client (5.0.02.90) as opposed to the version I had or it was a software firewall (Norton 360). I have two different computers. One works just fine...the other connects but no traffic passes through. Here is what I have:
Computer 1 (working)- VPN Client v5.0.02.0090 and Network Associates Enterprise VirusScan.
Computer 2 (not working) - VPN Client v5.0.00.0340 and Norton 360.
I highly doubt it is the VPN Client, but sometimes you never know. Check your software firewall and try disabling it. Let me know how this works.

I applied the above command as you specified, and unfortunately, it did not resolve the problem. Below are the logs from the VPN Client for the connection + attempted browsing of a network share that is behind the ASA, and the new running configuration.
