Vtp mode transparent and DTP negotiation

I don't have any equipment at home to make the following test :
- Assuming that 2 catalysts are connected through a GigatbitEthernet interfaces
- Assuming that both interfaces are configured with "sw mode dynamic desirable" and no other command.
- Assuming that vtp domain name is the same
- Assuming that both catalysts are configured with "vtp mode transparent"
Question: Would those Catalyst able to negotiate the trunking mode ?
(with "vtp mode server" or "client" it would work, but with "vtp mode transparent"...)
Thanks for your help

Bonjour,
the trunk would be formed regardless of the VTP mode or the VTP domain name. DTP packets are sent when the port is configured as 'dynamic desirable', and the trunk will be established.

  • VTP (revision numbers) and one client not getting updates

    Hello.
Somewhere along the line one of our switches (3750x) got messed up. Once they were finally configured about 6 months ago we never touched them again.
I noticed yesterday when I created a new vlan it was not getting populated to one of our switches. For some reason I did not notice that the domain name on the switch not receiving updates was not our domain.
So I switched the domain on this switch to the correct domain and it still does not show any updates and also has a revision # of 7.
So on this switch I then unplugged all trunk ports and did "vtp mode transparent". I then switched it back to "vtp mode client vlan".
    It still showed revision 7.
So I tried "vtp domain bogus" and "vtp mode transparent" and then did "vtp domain mydomain" and "vtp mode client vlan".
    It still showed revision 7.
So I tried "vtp domain bogus" and "vtp mode transparent vlan" and then did "vtp domain mydomain" and "vtp mode client vlan".
    It still showed revision 7.
I am at a loss as to how to fix this problem other than rebuilding the switch. I have a vtp server at revision 10 and two other switches also at revision 10 that are getting updates from the vtp server. Only one switch is not.  Please note that this one switch that is not working at some point did since it has all the vlans we created on our initial installation.

  • Nexus 3548 Switch doesn't recognize command " vtp mode Server / Client"

    Hi Community.
I have a brand new Nexus 3548 switch. And I did the vtp setup:
    vtp version 2
    vtp password ******
    vtp domain *****
Every thing is ok, but If I use the command "vtp mode server" the switch doesn't know that command. Even it doesn't know the "vtp mode" subcommand?
    What's the problem ?
    Best regards patrick

The Nexus 3548 supports only Transparent mode:
Step 5 vtp mode {transparent| off} Sets the VTP mode to transparent or off.

    I have no clue why.

  • VTP Domain Name and Transparent Mode

Can two switches connect via a trunk, one as a server and one as transparent and be in two different VTP domains respectively?

    Hi Guys,
    For the error messgae below:
Error Message DTP-5-DOMAINMISMATCH: Unable to perform trunk negotiation on port
[chars] because of VTP domain mismatch.
This you will got only when you have an automatic trunk negotiation using the DTP (dynamic trunking protocol) between the switches. The switches with different VTP domain name will not negotiate a trunk and a trunk will not form. But if you configure a trunk manually (not using DTP) then the trunk will work.
HTH, Please rate if this helps

  • What is the advantage of setting VTP mode to transparent?

I have a Cat 6509 and eighteen 3524 and/or 3548's. Obviously I want my 6509 to be in VTP server mode. But is there any advantage/disadvantage to having the 3500's in client or transparent. I would think client, but is transparent use less resources, both internal to the switch, and , external, i.e., network resources. I've seen some CCIE's insist that the 3500's must be in transparent mode and configure the VLAN info on them manually. What is preferred?

Configuring VTP in transparent mode requires manual configuration, a VTP-transparent switch does not advertise VLAN information to other switches and will ignore VTP updates from VTP clients and servers.
VTP propagates information about the VLAN configuration throughout the switched network. A Catalyst 6000 family switch can operate in any one of these three VTP modes:
Server—VTP servers advertise their VLAN configuration to other switches in the same VTP domain and synchronize their VLAN configuration with other switches based on advertisements received over trunk links. VTP server is the default mode.
Client—VTP clients are similar to VTP servers, except that you cannot create, change, or delete VLANs on a VTP client.
Transparent—VTP transparent switches do not participate in VTP. A VTP transparent switch does not advertise its VLAN configuration and does not synchronize its VLAN configuration based on received advertisements.

  • Switches have a VTP Mode set to "server" can I set them to "Transparent" on a live network?

Currently our cisco 2960 switches at location "B" have a VTP Mode set to “server” I want to change this to “Transparent”
    They have VLAN1-default (active) 10.1.10.81; VLAN2-patron(active) 192.168.10.2; VLAN3-vlan0003(suspended) no ipaddress; VLAN4-vlan0004(suspended) 192.168.20.2
    I want to delete VLAN3 and VLAN4
The connection between loc "A" and "B" is set to “Static Access VLAN1” I need to change it to “Trunk Nonnegotiate Vlan all” for our vlan2 at loc "B" to work.
Reason for this change, when I added these switches to our network about 6 months ago it brought my network down, Knowing what I know now I think they wrote their settings to all the other switches that were vtp server switches on our network, VLAN3 and 4 were set to active at that time.

Switching from server to transparent vtp mode will not disrupt your network, the existing vlans will still be available, modifications however will need to be executed manually on the transparent mode switches.
If the interfaces between location A and B are configured as access ports, VTP will not work as it is only in effect on trunk links.
Before adding switches to an existing VTP domain, best practise is to configure transparent mode to set the revision number to 0. This way the VLAN database of existing switches will not be altered when connecting the switch.

  • VTP v2 Transparent mode forwarding

    All,
As part of my recertification, i am studying VTP (again) and i ran into the following question:
I know VTP v1 switches in transparent mode only forward VTP advertisements if the domain name is the same and if the version is the same (so only v1 gets forwarded and only if the domain name matches)
I know VTP v2 has a feature called: version-independent forwarding: a VTP v2 transparent switch will forward VTP v2 packets as well as VTP v1 packets.
BUT what about the domain name ? Does it still need to match ?
Will a VTP v2 Transparent Switch in domain "Cisco" forward a VTP v1 or v2 advertisement of domain "TEST" ???
    regards,
    Geert

Ok. Thx. Let us believe the documentation.
Although it is not really clear why this feature is called "version dependent transparent mode" and not "version independent transparent mode". To me it seems more logical - since it forwards v1 and v2 - to be version independent...
    So in the following situation:
    SW1 ---- trunk --- SW2 ----- trunk----- SW3
    Server Transparent Client
    VLANS 1,2,3
Domain TEST Domain Cisco Domain TEST
If SW2 is running VTP v1 --> SW3 does not know any VLANs
    If SW2 is running VTP v2 --> SW3 does see VLANS 1,2,3

  • Changing VTP modes in production network

    Hi All,
we have small production network having 10 switches where we are not using VTP.
When i checked switches, found that few are running server, few client and few transparent. there are different VTP domains configured. Clearly, switches from multiple locations has been brought here.
Anyway, there are few switches having same domain name and running in server/client mode and i want to migrate all to transparent mode.
Should i go with client first and change the vtp mode to transparent and server switches in the last? Also i have 2 switches acting as servers so while changing VTP mode from server to transparent on one switch, will it affect the 2nd server.
    Thank you

which is the switch that you make the changes too the most (adding vlan or deleting vlans and that kind of stuff)?
if you make a change on the vtp server it would migrate to the client mode switches IF you have all on the same vtp domain.
go to the vtp servers and type sh vtp status
the one with the highest revision number should be kept as a server.
you then put a vtp domain name (if you do not already have one.)
best to put a vtp password
then go to rest of the switches change them all to transparent. (this will reset the revision # to 0 )
change the vtp domain on these switches to whatever you put on the server, along with the password.. this will allow them to join ONLY if they have the same VTP password.
    then change them to clients.
all the vlan and info should then come from the server to all the client mode switches.
this way if you make a change ont he server mode switch, you do not need to make any changes on any other switch.
if you leave them in transparent mode then none of the changes that are made will be picked up. and you would need to go to every switch and manually do the changes

  • VTP revision number and VLAN database updates

Hi - Theoretically, is the following possible ?
We have an established network on VTP domain say - CORP where we have a core switch performing the VLAN/VTP updates.
Someone plugs in a rogue switch to the network - say configured for a different VTP domain TEST, or maybe just a default undefined VTP domain. If the VTP Revision number of the rogue switch is higher than the Core Switch(CORP) - can the rogue switch wipe out the VLANs on CORP ?
My understanding from VTP is that the server and client need to be on the same domain for updates to occur flowing from the Server to the Client. But, also read somewhere that VTP revision is more something that needs to be a watch out for.
In question would be a CAT 6506 being the Server, and the roque being any switch - even a Cisco 2940 which we might typically user for conference rooms.
    pls advise
    thanks in advance

A switch if not configured for any vtp domain, defaulting to null, when plugged into a life network, it will join the domain that it learns about via vtp.
Also, a switch in vtp client mode, eventhough is not possible to configure vlan info on it, but will still propagate it's vlan d/b info via vtp. Therefore, if a client has a higher revision number then the one in the life network, therefore it will still wipe out the current VLANs in the life network replacing it with whatever that it has in it's own database.
There are 3 ways to avoid this:
    1. Configure vtp mode of switch fr client to transparent, then switch it back to client mode. This will reset the vtp rev. back to 0.
    2. Configure it to a different vtp domain, then switch it back. This will also reset the vtp rev. back to 0.
    3. Configure ur switch uplink as an access port. VTP info will only propagate through trunks.
    HTH.

Thanks so much everyone for your suggestions.  Iu2019ve tried them all and hereu2019s what I now have:
Anil u2013 Active datasources were included in the original transport.  I tried retransporting and got the same error messages.
Voodi u2013 0ACCOUNT_TEXT was resident in the Q system as a 3x datasource.  I replicated it as a 70 datasource in D and this is what was transported to Q.  It is a 7.0 datasource in Q.  I got the same error messages when I tried transporting just the transformations.
Jayaram - 0ACCOUNT is active in the Q system and is currently being used in transformations other than the one Iu2019m trying to import.
Godhuli u2013 I not only re-replicated the datasource in D, I reactivated the transformations and DTPs and resaved the InfoPackages.  I tried retransporting with a new transport request and it failed with the same error messages.
Is there anything else anyone can think of?
    Thanks,

  • Changing update mode in Error DTP

    Hi Gurus,
I have some issues with data in PSA. I am trying to solve it using Error DTP.
While Executing DTP one record failed to load giving bad request. Now i created an error DTP. By default the extraction mode is Delta.
    DTP extraction Mode->Full
Error DTP Extraction Mode -> Delta; How can i make it full. If i amm trying to change it, The option is disabled.
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards
    Anu

    Hi Anu,
In my system original DTP is full and when i create error DTP, i got error DTP extraction mode is full.
Yes you are right, it is disabled.can you check the update mode of your original DTP once.
once the error DTP is created, we can not change the update of it.

    Venkatesh.

  • Cisco Security Manager & Cat6k in client/server vtp mode

Why won't CSM parse the config of a cat6k that is in client or server vtp mode?
Why does it have to be transparant mode?

    Hi,
I am the TME for CSM. Currently CSM will only support VTP transparent since we only parse the running-config file. If you are running server/client it means that your vlan configuration will NOT be in the running-config (but in a seperate file). CSM doesn't read this file so things break. Next version of CSM (3.2 Q1CY08) will work with VTP server/client. The way it works is that it still won't read this extra file but instead it will ignore the whole vlan configuration. So you won't be able to create new vlans when running server/client but still you can assign vlans to interfaces using CSM. You will be personally responsible in making sure the vlan really exist when you configure it in CSM..(so you do this via CLI).

  • Trasformations and DTP are decactivating after adding some NAV in cube

    Hello Experts
Trasformations and DTP are decactivating after adding some NAV in cube and activating it.
I knew that it is normal but activating all the DTP's and Transformations is painfull work, would like to just know whether there is any programme to activate the dependent objects!!!

yes, thats right. A stupid job.
in my last project I created 3 multicubes, 14 infocubes and 23 dso's.
-> 1 change in the data modell and you must reactivate 20 objects.
I wrote a ABAP program to activate
    - datasources
    - transformations
    - DTP's
    - update roules and
    - multicubes.
It's very nive. So simple now, to make a change.
    I select
    - a object or
    - or an infoarea
    - and the program search all objects in the dataflow.
    I have two modes
    - to display all objects
    - and activate the inactive objects.
They are many tasks, where I think a tool can help me to increase my development performance. But I don't have enough time.

  • VTP Mode

I am unable to change VTP mode on Cisco Nexus 9372 switch. BIOS 7.1 NSOX version 6.1

Haven't used these switches but according to the configuration guide they only support VTP transparent so you can't change it.
See this link for details -
