W540 Questions & Issues

Hi Folks,
Questions & Issues:
1. Where is the Break key on the W540?
2. My W540 locks up about once every two days - there does not appear to be any common task that causes this. When it lock nothing works, not Ctrl+Alt+Del, I must power off with the power button. Any comments or suggestions?
Observations:
I'm not a fan of the new keyboard. For example, the F1..F12 keys are difficult to read (the F parts, not the pictures) and the off center feel leads to difficult typing (at least for me).

2. Go to Start > Lenovo > System Update. Install all Critical and Recommended Updates.
3. If No.2 does not work, go to Task Manager > Startup > Try uncheck a few which is optional. Do not uncheck Lenovo Stuffs and Antivirus.

Issue 2 - Is LightRoom a better (faster, more specific with metadata, and speedier) than Bridge for a cataloging/browsing tool?
Issue 3 - In LR, we've discovered we can catalog audio interviews by using the .wav files and giving them the same name as the image of the person being interviewed. (JimmyPic01.tif is paired with JimmyPic01.wav, JimmyPic02.tif is paired with JimmyPic02.wav - we give the image the metadata about the date and time of the interview, etc.) Now, is there a limit to the size of the .wav file associated with an image? Will our researchers be able to click on the .wav file and listen to the entire interview? Is it possible to alter the program used to open the .wav files in order to permit fast forward and replay functions? Does the audio player in LR permit those functions?
Issue 4 - Does Adobe build a catalog package with the elegance of LR (pleasant-looking interfaces and speedy searches) and the simplicity and power of Bridge (catalog audio, video, and documents)? Does LR permit the creation of metadata fields as easily as Bridge?
I guess many of these questions will get answered if I simply install a copy and play a while. . .?

Yet, another misunderstanding on the readers' part... I am fully aware that my comments here on the forum would draw as much attention from Adobe to ban me than my opinions on global warming would attract the attention of the new administration in DC... I was addressing the three initial responders to my original post and inviting them to do what they will to avoid my intrusions.
My questionable issues revolved around issues of the program which caused me to ask questions for further clarification - there were never any
objectionable issues raised... simply a few questionable ones.
I have no intention of letting anyone drive me away while my curiosity for the program is still fresh and vibrant. I'll continue to be me and will permit others to be who they are ... I have no expectations about any aspect of these forums except that most subscribers come here 1 -
to learn and 2 -
to help. Finding and making friends might be an ancillary benefit, but for the most part, I would suspect not a primary objective.
I base my knowledge on forum, email distribution list, and listserv memberships as the creator/moderator of a librarian forum that has recently moved past its decade-old mark... and the current host of several social networks.
So, although I am new to
this forum, I am not new to participating in them. I can appreciate the fact that many may not, and will not, accept my approaches to bulletin boards and email interactions; however, it's a big forum, and I am not required, or inclined, to follow any personal preference demands, content restrictions, or behavioral limitations of anyone outside the Terms of Use.
So, I'll do the best I can at adjusting and adapting in order to get help and give help - but for those who demand the rest of us adjust to their expectations and behavioral norms, they'll have to do a bit of adjusting and adapting themselves ... if nothing else, just to demonstrate they
can do something that they demand of others.

Syncing Audio with Merge Clips option and OMF export question/issue

Hi,
In the past when I've edited video, when it came to syncing audio I always did it manually. This time, using Premiere Pro CC, I used the merge clips option, to speed up the syncing audio process, which was a huge time saver with excellent results.
The question/issue I have..is that when I get my OMF exported for my sound editor, will this screw anything up, since on the project file, it doesn't use the original audio file, but the one that was merged. And in the project list, I don't even need to have the original audio file listed, since it's already been merged into a clip, which I used in the project. I know it's the same file used, but will it mess anything up since a merged clip audio was used instead of just dragging the original track onto the timeline?

A good way to know for sure (and therefore feel comfortable that you're doing the right thing) is to do a test OMF export, then open this in Audition. This ill show you exactly what you're exporting.

W540 display issue

I have a W540 ( 20BG 0016US) with the Quadro K2100M, 3k 2880 x 1620 Native Resolution, OS Win 7 Pro 64
nVidia Driver: 9.18.13.1269
Intel Driver: 10.18.10.3412
My question is directed to the membership that has this particular computer with 2880x1620 native resolution.
Could you be so kind as to let me know what resolution, display setting, driver, and any special workaround to view software programs correctly while taking advantage of the enhanced screen. Or must I downgrade to a lower resolution as a workaround.
I find some programs present well, others have tiny fonts, some very tiny fonts. At times, things overlap. This make the screen practically useless with the default resolution, which appears to be a selling point, and mentioned as great in the on line reviews.
Using: Google Web Browser, Photoshop, LIghtroom (that works great, albeit the screen proportions are wrong), Photomatix, Qimage, Access + Word + Excel (Office 2010), Skype, All My Notes, Evernote, Calibre, Acrobat, and more.
All display inconsistently. I realize this is a software issue.

Here's a tried and true manual EDID method that worked for all my monitors and projectors, initially not recognized by w530.
" Any external display device attached to an Optimus system
via VGA, DVI, DP etc. reports its EDID, first passing thru the
Intel/HD chipset and eventually reaching Nvidia's Optimus driver
(that's my suspicion). This paths seems still broken and needs manual
intervention for both Linux and Win; e.g., google for keywords such
as, "nvidia EDID bug over-ride.."
1) I downloaded the free Moninfo, scanned all my external displays and
saved each one as an .INF file (w/o editing, as some posts suggests in
certain cases).
2) In nvidia Control Panel, under "system topo" i loaded the
respective external EDID files, which in fact also serve as monitor
driver files (.inf)
Alternatively, one can also download and install each .inf monitor
info file as needed, from vendors.
Or one can edit a fake template for all these .inf files, since any
device supports e.g. 1024x768 @ 60Hz... then one can augment it for
the respective native resolutions, typically 1280, 1920, 2560, 3840
etc. @ 60Hz."

W540 Questions. Please?

I am considering a W540. I have some questions.
1.) Has that SSD replacement briking BIOS/EFI issue been fixed yet.
Can we safely swap drives, such as a Samsung 1TB SSD?
2.) Can we dual-boot Linux such as Mint/Mate and Windows 7 in a normal fashion?
3.) Does the M2 help with hard drive caching with Windows?
a.) What happens if you have it in place with dual boot?
b) Is the caching reliable?
c) Have people used the M2 for dual booting?
4.) Does the W540 come with a thunderbolt to monitor adapter?
5.) If the drive caddies no longer come complete, with rails, has anyone tried a 3rd party one?

If anyone has any other comments, as well as heat/reliability info that might be helpful too.

1] Don't understand your question about 'briking' (sic). However, I will tell you that I have an 840 EVO 1tb MZ-7TE1T0BW and it is working fine.
3] Yes it will if you have a regular HD, not really if you have an SSD.
4] Yes, but the adapter is on your tab to buy. I never tested the feature.
5] Yes, I used a third party. Lenovo dumbed down the tray to one with a screw mount that most non workstation laptops use.
6] Yes, but it becomes very hard to read when back lit in the dark. You will have to place a P-Touch tape above the keys as a work around. Previously mentioned. If you like stickers, the W540 is an ideal system.
Personally, myself, I never had any heat problems, runs very cool, but I use it for work, no fancy graphics, videos or games. I tested the system under load, and indeed the left palm gets very hot, but that is under test conditions, in real life, I never had issues.
The real issue is the keyboard mapping. The keyboard has a great feel, off center is not really a problem, THE PROBLEM are the missing keys, useless keys, difficulty in assigning macro to key combos and the missing indicator lights.

Thinkpad W540 Trackpoint issue

Hi.
I'm having some issues with my newly bought W540 thinkpad.
Each time Windows 8.1 starts up after a longer shutdown, the UltraNav trackpoint freezes.
The problem seems to affect the trackpoint only, i have no problem with the touchpad.
Loading the UEFI BIOS setup defaults seems to help, but i need to do it after every shutdown, which is
very frustrating. The problem doesn't occur when restarting windows.
Pleas help!

Thank you for the reply!
The driver version which you have mentioned is correct, & I think the firmware is not working as expected; this might be the cause for the hardware failure.
However we can check one more option and after that you can log the case for that.
Please uninstall the Synaptics driver from Control panel – program and feature option and restart the system, let windows install the default driver for that and check if the issue still persist.
And also check removing the cap of the Track-point and check if there is any dust inside that.

Adobe Photoshop Touch Question / Issue

I bought Adobe Photoshop Touch some time ago for my Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and I liked it so much. Of all the apps I had for photo editing, this one gave me all I need. I used to own Adobe Photoshop CS2 on my old PC so I wanted something for my tab as well. I was very satisfied by this app until my tab died some time ago. After a pain of service and repairs, the tab worked again but it had a new issue. Anytime I used the device on something more demanding (i.e. playing games ) the tab overheated a lot and the screen started to touch itself very much as, if it was pressed all the time. After some time of struggle with it I decided to wipe it clean and pass it out to a family member who would maybe dedicate more time to fix it.
Last month I bought myself a new device ( Sony Xperia Z ) and I was eager to get all my data on it and apps of course. To my sadness Adobe Photoshop Touch is not compatible with my device now, and it just sits there in my app list doing nothing . I could install only Photoshop Express but it does not give me the full access I had with Touch. I saw that there is another product called Photoshop Touch for smartphones and it seems to be the same as what I had only phone edition.
My problem is that I can not get this new app unless I pay for it and I do not wish to do that because I already paid for the previous edition.
My question is: Can I somehow obtain the Smartphone edition and the previous version ( which apparently is for tablets I suppose ) be removed from my Google Play account. I would purchase the smartphone version but there is no point in having 1 app 2 times.
I would happily like the staff to remove my previous version from my account if they would gave me the smartphone version and I acknowledge that the tab app was more expensive than the smartphone version and Adobe will not refund me the money difference nor are they obligated to give me the smartphone version. I am just asking if it would be possible because I like that app and it's such a shame for it to be in my app list and not be used. I don't think you'll have much luck. PS Touch for tablets was designed for just tablets; PS Touch for phones was designed for just phones. Touch for phones came out a little later than Touch for tablets. (By several months, if I recall.) On the brighter side, if you ended up buying Touch for phones, you'd be covered no matter which device you had.
Both are very similar in function. I believe the only differences are their UIs; Touch for tablets is landscape-oriented-specific while Touch for phones is portrait-oriented. (Some elements are also placed differently.) I imagine this allows for maximum utilization of screen real estate and element placement.

WD Java iView Creation Question/Issue - CE 7.1 EHP 1 Trial

Im posting this question here seeing as that the issue has arrised on an installation of the AS JAVA and EP shipped with CE 7.1 EHP1 Trial.
When attempting to create an iView for a deployed custom WD Java app on the trial Portal I am taken straight to the iView template selection without being given the options for iView creation( ie. create from template, portal component or WD Java app). Is this by design ( WD Java iView creation has changed from previous Portal versions or is limited in Trial installation), is this an issue with the components shipped with the Trial or an issue on my installation only?
Currently my only solution for deploying WD java content is to copy the actual application and paste it as Portal content which then creates a WD Proxy page with a single WD Proxy iView (that of the copy pasted WD app). This is fine for single app scenarios but becomes an issue with multiple apps on one page and drag and relate scenarios.

2 iTunes questions/issues

I had to recently reinstall Snow Leopard, now I have to issues. 1) when I double click on songs in my iTunes the music doesn't play. I have to right click and then hit play, how do I enable double click again? 2) my iTunes is now set as my default internet music player, how do I change this? 3) a General question, my DSL was with Verizon, now that has been transferred to Frontier. When navigating to web sites it seems that there is an issue with Frontier & Safari. How do I know this? I changed my PC to Safari from Explorer and now I am having the same issue on both my iMac and PC...no wonder they were trying to push me to Foxfire. Is anyone else having this issue, and have you been able to resolve it?

IPhoto '11 Questions / Issues

I upgraded to iPhoto '11 as soon as it became available. As I have been working with it and trying to update all of my old photos with titles, descriptions, locations, etc, I have found a few things that either are bugs with iPhoto, or I just haven't figured out how to do them yet.
First, when setting a location on a photo, the only way I have found to do it is to go into the info screen, then use the small map in the corner to place the marker. Is there a way to get a full-sized map when locating photos?
Second, I have been having some issues with Faces. When I am looking in the info screen for a picture, some pictures show that I have xx number of unnamed faces, where xx could be any number. However, when I look at the picture, I can't find any spot in the photo where there is the box around a section of the photo with the "unnamed" label below it. Why is it showing that I have unnamed faces if there are no markers on the photo?
Also with Faces, I have tried using the feature where I can look at and name 5 pictures at a time. I have 2 questions with regards to this feature. First, is it possible, especially while in full-screen mode to look at more than 5 faces at a time, and second, why does it keep having me rename the same photos over and over again that are all from the same photo?
And finally, another Faces issue, after I mark some Faces through the feature where I name multiple faces at once, I have looked at some photos and it shows a person's name, but it will have the box around a completely different person? Any ideas?

More XControl questions / issues

XControl 1, X1, has two other XControls, X2 and X3, on its
block diagram
When I open a VI with X1 on it, the Init ability is called
for X2 and X3 three times each. X1’s
Init ability is called one time. (The
other VIs you see pop up are called from X2 and X3 as a result of Init
executing, so they illustrate the Init calls.
They close when Uninit is called, and you can see as much when you close
the VI and project)
When I close said VI, the Uninit ability is called for X1
and called twice for X2 and X3. This, of
course, leaves one instance of X2 and X3 left open. Consequently, references and VI’s I opened as
a result of the Init call are left open (you notice the two subvi's still open).
Once I close the project, the Uninit abilities are called
for X2 and X3, closing the remaining resources.
There is a file in the folder called log.txt I write to in
the init and Uninit abilities for each XControl. If you open it after each step you can see
what I’m talking about.
Additional things:
After I close the VI, but not the project, X2 and X3 are of course
locked. When I right click “Unlock this

My real project loads the XControls (and executes the Init ability) as soon as it opens for
some reason, and makes it nearly impossible to edit them unless I close and open the

Is it expected that an XControl an another XControl should be called more than once?
Why don't they get unloaded when the main XControl is closed and unloaded?
Why the .cpp error?

I'm sorry that this has been a frustration to you. The fastest way to resolve this issue appears to upgrade. Have you attempted to reproduce this error in LabVIEW 2010 SP1? I was unable to reproduce this situation in LabVIEW 2010 SP1.
The CPP error is due to some issue with how this has been internally developed. It appears to have been resolved in LabVIEW 2010 SP1 as do the other issues you have been dealing with. Can you please confirm this for me? I am happy to further address this issue to ensure your success. All the best!

Security question issues

I recently update my iPod touch 4g to the latest IOS 6 ... And since then I got lot of issues, starting of with the fact that iTunes store change lenguage again by itself, also the app store change the lenguage, which I set in English (I live in Tokyo Japan.. but Iset my app store and itunes store in english)... so since the app store change itself, I'm continuosly asked for an apple ID security thing... (I research a bit online and turns out to be that they are asking me for 3 security questions) and due all the app store is in japanese I can't set anything.... and also I can't download anything, since I don't provide to Apple ID the questions...I don't know if someone else is having this same issue... but I will appreciate your help, please

Captivate 5 knowledge check vs. quiz question issue

I would like to include question slides in my Captivate 5 project that do not score and are just used as quick knowledge checks. I also will have a quiz at the end that will score and report to our LMS. I have tried a number of things, but none are taking the knowledge check questions out of the question total or the review quiz functionality.
I have tried marking the knowledge check questions as "survey" instead of "graded," and unchecked "report answers." I don't see any other options available to me. When I press F9, I cannot edit the question settings. It looks like the Object ID may be causing my issue (since it is the same ID as the main quiz), but it doesn't seem like I can change that.
Any ideas?

When you say the survey questions are not being excluded from the quiz, are your talking about the progress captions that say Question X of Y?
If so, you should be aware that you can turn off these markers and create your own by inserting captions that use Variables and Advanced Actions to calculate the question number.
If you've set the score for the survey questions to 0 and unticked the box to prevent them from being included in reprorting, they shouldn't be affecting the overall pass/fail score for the user.

Can't reset my password thanks to slow email and security questions issues.

I'm trying to reset my password on my Iphone so I can update my device and apps, but I forgot my password. So I decided to reset, using my username, but I never recieved an email to do so. I tried the security questions, and everytime I try to enter my birthday, the site keeps reseting me back to selecting my brithday. So in a way, there is no way I can reset my password? How do I fix this issue?

Although your logic escapes me. YOU made several mistakes, including your security questions, not having a rescue email address, and having a weak password that someone guessed. And you expect Apple to bail you out of the predicament that YOU created instantly. They probably will, but it isn't something that you should expect.

After 3 years, I got a new iphone5 and ran into the security question issue. Because of the questions apple chose, I have no idea what the answers are. I did the iTunes email thing and waited 36 hours for a response. I

After waiting the 36 hours, I received an email advising me. To contact a phone support number. After waiting 15 minutes on hold, the helpful person asked me for the answers to the security questions and said that answering them was the only way to reset the questions. I said, WHAT? You don't see any cyclic logic there? Apple (the inovator!) has not foreseen this? I was livid. I was advised I could leave a comment on Apple.com. I think I'll leave my comment on every Apple contract that crosses my desk. I'm IT Systems at a large US university. If anyone from Apple wishes to address this, PM me.

Thanks! I'm a little leery of attaching a credit card to itunes again because of all the apple database jacking in the past. I had a bunch of unauthorized purchases charged to my account for devices that I never owned. Took me weeks to replace the credit card even though it was never compromised but apple was impotent to fix the issue. On this issue, I finally got the working key to the system. Even though there are BAZILLIONS of ways to verify a person's identity via two forms, using the security questions forgotten as one of them seems to be circular (failed) logic. Seriously, it's like requiring someone's password to reset a forgotten password. My take on the issue fixed by this workflow, that I noticed from the 3 sets of calls and 20 minute wait on each is this.... iTunes was racked by all the fraudulent purchases I (and thousands of others) experienced and people (like me) had to go through all the credit card issues because Apple "would not" fix the issues in iTunes and pursue the fraudulent purchasers (even though Apple had the device IDs!). So we ripped out our credit card info in iTunes. On this security question reset issue, if they can require people to re-enter their credit card info under the guise of "identification ...because your security is so important!) and then take 60 minutes to create a high intensity customer interaction, there is a high probability that the average customer will temporarily forget all about removing their credit card info. It's actually brilliant! ...but very underhanded.... but also very Apple. I don't expect this reply to have a long life-span, but thanks for your response. If I can log into iTunes, I can add any credit card. therefore IF I CAN LOG INTO ITUNES APPLE HAS THE SECOND METHOD ALREADY! Thanks.
