Wakes up to wrong display setting then quits everthing !

Hi all,
I have a mac mini running an updated snow leopard plugged via an adapter into the HDMI slot of my Philips 40" LCD screen. For some time now, whenever I wake up the mac mini and the TV (both of which go to sleep after a period of inactivity), the screen starts off with the wrong display setting moving from 1360 x 768 to 1600 x 900 which is a much worse picture. I can switch it back through the menu bar, and that usually works, although sometimes, it also quits any open apps so I get multiple 'unexpectedly quit' error messages. This can also happen if I use the remote to wake it up without turning on the TV.
Any ideas how I stop this ? I have repaired permissions and also verified and repaired the hard drive and that seems to have a short term impact.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Ben

See if there is a way to turn off CEC on the Philips through its menu system and see if that helps.

    Hello all,
I have a 14.88G iPod Nano that I currently use as my primary watch. A week or so ago I started to experience a blank white screen when I press the "sleep/wake" button instead of the watch face (I have it set to wake from sleep to display the clock). When I hard reset it, it will come back fine and the screen will respond and work as normal, as soon as I manually put it to sleep by pressing the "sleep/wake" button and then try to wake it the same thing happens and I have a blank white screen that doesn't respond to touch gestures or anything.
What I have tried so far to no avail:
Numerous hard restarts (holding the "sleep/wake" button with the volume - button).
Tried this: iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
Changed the watch face to display.
Recharged the device overnight (without full discharge).
Since none of this works I'm out of ideas. Eventhough I have a 6G Nano it should no longer be under warranty since I was sent it as a replacement for a different (older) product.
Any ideas? Is this a known problem? Thanks in advance for any insight any of you could provide. Also, what time is it??
    Regards,

    Hey,
I have the exact same problem as you have described. I also used my ipod as a watch but starting from today, whenever I unlock it the screen turns white until a reset is done. Even a factory reset through itunes didn't fix it.
    Have you found any solution?
    Bah, this is annoying.

  • HT4061 iTunes will not open when my iPhone 4S is attached to my Mac Book Pro. iTunes will start up but as soon as my iPhone appears in the list of devices the program then quits and displays the message 'iTune Quit Unexpectedly'? Can anybody help?

    The Problem/s
    1. I am unable to sync my iPhone 4S with my Mac Book Pro, either by cable, wifi or bluetooth
    2. iTunes will initiall open and briefly identifies the iPhone in the Device section in iTunes.
    3. When iTunes starts to read the iPhone (displaying the spinning wheel), it immediately then quits and
    4. Opens a 'dialogue box' which displays the message "iTunes Quit Unexpectedly"
5 The dialoge box offers the following button options to:-
    'Show Details'
The 'Show Details' button will open and display a list of the 'Problem Details and System Configeration'. To the average user the information is useless, as one doesn't know what to look for to solve the problem. This is a long and detailed report (too long to include in this message), which includes information such as:-
    Crashed Thread:  20
    Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x00000000000006f0
    'OK'
The 'Ok' button simply quits and closes the dialogue box
    'Reopen'
The 'Reopen' button will again reopen iTunes, briefly showing that it is trying to read the iPhone in the Devices section, but then returns again to display the same dialogue box.
    Other Information
    1. iTunes will still start normally once the USB cable is removed from the Mac book Pro, but crashes again once the USB cable is reattached to the computer
Any advice or help offered would be greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely
    Rob

If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, there should be a setting in its preferences such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected. Otherwise do as follows.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Chose wrong display settings, resulting in blue screen. Now what...

I just purchased a new Mac Mini and connected it to my LCD TV with an HDMI cable. Everything was working fine untill I switched the display setting from 1080i to 1080p (or vice versa, I'm not sure) which resulted in a blue screen. Now I can no longer see my desktop, how do I fix this ?
Nevermind. I just found the solution in another topic. Starting the Mac in safe mode solved my issue.

    Hi,
I've also had the same problem you've mentioned and had it kind-of resolved.
I had the horizontal grey area on my screen which got worse over time. I had it sent away to Apple to be repaired and it came back pretty much the same as they couldn't find anything diagnostically wrong with it. I then went to the Genius bar and, fortunately, they recognised that there was a grey banding and replaced the LCD panel.
This did get rid of the grey banding, although brought a whole new set of problems.
Don't put up with the genius staff trying to baffle you or make you feel like you are being silly for complaining - the iMac is not a cheap machine and you have the right to make sure it is fit for purpose. A grey/uneven screen is not fit for purpose.
Ask them to replace your LCD panel and glass, but inspect it when you collect it to make sure it is an even brightness and colour. My replacements have been brighter on the left hand side than the rest of the screen or had a blue tint on the left or a yellow tint on the right. If you don't like it, don't accept it - as I have been told repeatedly by Applecare and the genius bar 'all the lcd panels are different you have to find one you like' i.e. put up with!
Eventually the cost of the replacement panels will mount up and they will offer a replacement. It has taken me almost a year to get my replacement. Just keep on at them until it is resolved.
Also, on your first pic there is a rectangular mark - this could be screen persistance and can be easily removed by using a white screensaver for a few hours. I found mine did it when i had the brightness on full (to compensate for the greyness!).
Hope this has helped, good luck!

  • Update 10.10.1 starts to install then quits.

The Yosemite update 10.10.1 from the App Store starts to install when I use the Update button, then quits downloading after a couple of seconds. The Update button then activates again. The same thing happens when I click the Update button again. The other updates download and install without any problems. What's wrong?
    Thanks

I have a similar problem also on 2009 27" iMac.
Tried getting 10.10.1 through App Store. Can't verify if it downloaded completely - it started the progress bar and when I came back later it made me click Restart. But my machine is still running 10.10. When I now try to do this again by clicking Update in the App Store the download progress briefly appears and then goes away. And the Update button is displayed again.
There is a similar problem with two printer drivers I downloaded after installing Yosemite 10.10 - both of these show up with an Update button BUT also both show up in the list of installed packages.
I did download the standalone .dmg from the Apple website (OSXUpd10.10.1.dmg). When I run that it only takes a few seconds, without anything being installed, then the Restart button shows up. I click that. Machine restarts - but no 10.10.1 is being installed after reboot.
Repaired permissions, verified the disk, reset PRAM, started up in Safe Mode and tried install.....
AND: I have a late 2009 MacMini which installed the update just fine. Don't really know what to do at this point. The machine actually runs fine on 10.10 but I don't have access to any update.
    Thanks

  • Photos sync from iPhone 9.4.2 got wrong display order in iOS 6

First of all, before I updated iPhoto to the newest version 9.4.2, all things worked fine.
I have set iTunes to sync photos to my new iPad from my iPhoto library, and I have create many smart albums. I know the display order of the photos synced to iPad is sorted by the photo's create time. and it's ok for me.
But after I updated to iPhoto 9.4.2, the problem come. The photos in the smart album on iPad got wrong display order. The order now is sorted by rotation! the landscape direction comes first, then the portrait direction after that. After some time study, I found this only affect the photos which are newly imported to iPhoto. The photos imported before I updated the iPhoto work fine.
Then I tried to create a totally new iPhoto library which contains the whole same set of all the photos, and continued to create the same smart albums. After I synced to the iPad again, the display order of all the smart album got wrong! They all sorted by rotation!
The display order in iPhoto itself on my MacBook was fine. The problem only occurs on my iPad.
I tried all my best to figure out why, and failed, then I thought it may be caused by the update of the iPhoto.
Yesterday, I visited Apple Retail Store, and met some geniuses. They didn't solve this either.
    Can anyone help me? Thanks!

  • Installing the CS Extension panel with the wrong date set on computer - won't install

    Hi!
I (with the help of my customers) noticed an interesting behavior of the Extension Manager - when the date is wrong on the computer, the panel won't install giving all sorts of errors, but the correct one. It's cool, that it's happening, because of security - I can understand that. But it's not so cool, that the error that is being displayed is not about wrong time set. The users who install the panel receive "an invalid extension", or "wrong publusher" message and they think that the panel they downloaded is invalid, not the time on their own computers. Is it possible to fix this behavior? It's a serious usability issue, I think, that prevents users from using the CS Extension panels.
    Thank you

    Hi, ddmiles1 -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
When I try to install from the Instalation disc it begins with the "Classic is starting" window.
That, and the other messages, indicate you are trying to run the installer on the OS 9.2.1 Install CD while the machine is booted to OSX on the hard drive.
That won't work. What is happening is that when you run the installer on the CD, since it is an OS 9-only program OSX tries to start up Classic, using the only available OS 9 System Folder, the one on the CD. However, before that System Folder could be used as Classic it must be updated by OSX - OSX must add a few files to it so that it can be used as Classic. This can't happen, of course, since the CD can not be written to.
The installer on all stand-alone OS 9 Install CDs will run only when the machine is booted to OS 9. You will first need to boot the machine to the CD, then run the installer. To do that, with the CD in the drive, restart; then immediately press the C key, keep it held down until you get the OS 9 Welcome screen.
It may be that your machine will not be able to boot to that CD. Conditions that could cause that are -
    • the CD is not a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD (those have a white label with a large gold 9 on them). If the CD is a model-specific one, and is for a model other than your specific iBook model, it willprobably not be able to be used.
    • your iBook G3 is too new a model to be able to use OS 9.2.1. Many iBook G3 models originally came with OS 9.2.2 - and that then is the minimum OS 9 version that they can use; specifically, those machines require the model-specific version of OS 9.2.2 that came with them. This Apple KBase article can help you determine the Apple designation for your model -

Why can I view PDF files from the Web on my iMac even after I installed Adobe Reader and accepted the end user license agreement.I then quit the application relaunched it, as instructed snd still the PDF document comes out blank or black. Please advice. Thanks

Are you saying that Adobe Reader or Preview can't read PDF file that you download? Or, are you saying that you can't display PDF files in your Safari broweer? If the latter, then delete any AdobePDFViewer plugins you find in /Library/Internet Plug-ins/ and restart. That should allow Safari to display PDFs in its window. BTW, that's the worst place to view them. Better to download them and use Adobe Reader or Preview.

  • Reader 10.1 issues - with 150% Display setting

I've waited a long time for the latest version of Reader (10.1.0.534) which came out yesterday. I keenly updated to it today and went testing (with my fingers crossed), only to find that it still doesn't fix the issues I'm encountering with my PCs Display set to 150% (Win 7 SP1 x64) - all the issues are all still there.
Firstly - when using under the latest IE9 I've noticed the following:
The top toolbar won't work and clicking on any button has no effect
The bottom (floating) toolbar is similarly ineffective
Somehow after I found 2 above, I've managed to loose the bottom floating toolbar altogether (and alt-F8 or F8 wont bring it back - not that its vital)
Right Clicking on the screen brings up an option panel away from the mouse
When used as a standalone app (again at 150% Display setting in Win 7) I've noticed:
The illumination of the Close, Maximise and Minimise buttons when the mouse is rolled over them is irregular and if the mouse becomes stationary on any of those buttons, the illumination goes.
Setting Display to 100% (or even 125% from provisional testing) seems to elliminate these bugs but is Adobe going to buy me some binoculars so I can see the tiny buttons and fonts on my HTPC screen from 6' away...
In this day and age of Windows coming with a perfectly capable Media Centre interface, many users of HTPCs have them set up with high resolution monitors (or TVs as the monitor) and leaving the display set to 100% is no good for regular PC functions (such as web browsing or pdf reading).
Please fix this Adobe. I've already applied to be a pre-release tester (and my application hasn't been picked up/followed up). I just feel I'm getting my moneys worth out of this product!

    Hi..
    Try removing a plugin...
    Quit Safari.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Move the Adobe PDF Browser plugin (or just PDF Browser plugin) from the Internet Plug-Ins folder to the Trash.
    Relaunch Safari to test.

  • Color/Display setting 17" iMac

I am not at the Mac at this time so I forget some steps.
The colors on the monitor were tending to be dark and the display of a spec'd PMS color definitely did not match, so I went into System Preferences, chose "Display" and then chose the color settings option. I clicked the option for advanced color settings. WHY did I do this? Duh!
After I went through all the "iMac" color settings, I saved the new calibrations. Somewhere along the line I came to screen display size (?). I clicked 1024 x 840 (like I said, I'm not at the iMac right now) or something close. WOW! I got everything BIG. It filled the screen all right! This was not what I wanted...I wanted to go back to the regular look. I returned to the Display, chose a lower size screen setting and the display was smaller than the area I have available.
I kept the larger setting because I don't know what else to do. When I read emails, the display is so large that my messages are down in the lower right off the screen.
All the icons on my desktop are wierd as well. The menu items are huge. Everything is huge. There was no "middle-size" setting for display. Where do I find Default settings? I've tried everything.

Use a hardware calibrator and while you're waiting for it to arrive, calibrate using the built in calibration in the system preferences for the display. Make sure you turn on the advanced options when you hit calibrate and calibrate to gamma 2.2 and a 6500K white point. These are not Apple's defaults but are essential. If you do at least that you'll get very good correspondence between print and monitor. A hardware calibrator will get you there absolutely. NEVER choose a working space profile such as adobeRGB or sRGB as your monitor profile. Monitors almost never correspond precisely to either of these and on a Mac, there is no excuse to not use at least the free built-in calibration. Apple's monitors (which you are using if it allows ColorLCD) are never near adobeRGB, they are usually closer to sRGB.

Sounds like we have a similar problem.  Four days ago I was playing music through a wireless Bose speaker via bluetooth and everything was fine.  Then I was texting while listening and got 2 texts about the same time as I was typing one and my phone went black.  I pushed the home button and it worked, went into my texts and all were there.  However ever since then the time isn't right, so it can't keep time no matter what I do.  The bluetooth works only at times, the wifi keeps jumping on and off, sometimes my data won't work and the other day I couldn't even turn it off, so had to wait until it died.  The battery life display at that moment wasn't correct either.  Took to Verizon, they couldn't help.  Suggested a factory reset, which I did last night and still the same issues!  One day I couldn't even text my husband on his iPhone.  Just wouldn't work at all.  Did everything suggest and still not good.  Seems like after stalking these pages today a lot of people are having this problem in Dec/Jan and of course also I'm 3 weeks out of my 1 year warranty and so were many others, by days.  Very strange, and all on the 5C.  What did you do?  Is it working now?
