I thought I would have to get home to type in my lettered passcode to get in, which I did. But when I plugged it in, there's no password needed or anything like that. iTunes won't even recognize my iPod, and the solution is to restore it, which I refuse to do, because all my work is in this iPod of mine I've had since nearly 4 years now.

Is the music purchased from iTunes? If it is you can contact iTunes support and ask them to allow you to re-download the music that you purchased from iTunes.
Also, do you sync the device regularly? When syncing an iPod Touch/iPhone a backup file is made. That backup file doesn't contain your music but it does contain your address book, application data, pictures, notes, etc. After restoring your device, you can try restoring from the last backup that was made of your device so you will not have to start over completely from scratch.

I recently downloaded Ios 7 and all the songs that i have purchased before, but deleted off my itunes because i didn't want them, showed up. I don't know how to delete them off my ipod and i really don't want them there. Is there a way to get them off? The songs dont show up in my itunes on my computer, just on my ipod with a download button next to them. I don't want them there anymore because i don't like that kind of music anymore and i don't know how to get them to go away.
There is a similar setting for Videos on that Settings screen, so if you leave that 'on' you may have similar happening in the Videos app

If it is asking for the screen-lock passcode then:
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode,put it into Recovery Mode.

Itunes suggeested that my Ipod was coruppted and to restore I tried this and it uploaded software and tried to restore but an error message came back (I did not save the error message). For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. I got my phone a couple of years ago and when it came in the mail, I wasn't home so my brother decided to set up my iPhone for me because he was so desperate to check the phone out. My iCloud account has been his account and it's been set up under his e-mail since the day I got my phone. Once he bought an iPhone, he set it up under the same e-mail account and now we share it. It's so annoying because all of my pictures and stuff are stored in my iCloud, but that's under his e-mail and I really want a new iCloud account but I want to transfer all of my iCloud information and pictures to my e-mail without losing them. Randomly, my brother has been receiving some of my facetime calls and I even turned it off so that it is only set on my device. I didn't even know he received any of my facetime calls until the other day when my friend told me. Now, our contacts are shared and I don't want that either. At one point during the summer, he was receiving my text messages as well. I turned all of those off under settings so they wouldn't be shared on his device, but I need to find a way to carry my iCloud stuff and set it up in a my own completely separate account. Please, please help me. I really am getting so frustrated with it and neither of us want to delete our accounts because we don't want to lose our iCloud stuff. -
My ipod classic, have these problem:
One day I find out that all the music was completely gone, I always charged the ipod on Ihome.
So, I connect the ipod to my computer to sync the music, but mi computer recognize the ipod as a memory device. so delete itunes from my computer, following some support guides that i found in the mac support web. Again, it didnt work. The itunes doesnt detect it.
then I try to sync on a macbook, then it told it was corrupted i should restore th ipod, i try it but this could not be done... cause an error occur.
How I can restore my ipod...Does both your Windows and Macbook iTunes have the same library of songs?
if it does then, much easier to proceed, else try to load the Macbook with the same library as Windows.
Note that only one of the Macbook USB port is good for iPod Classic, the other is too slow and may cause timeout, and I would suggest disconnect all other USB devices, while you Restore or Sync the iPod Classic.
Connect the iPod to the Mac, (if iTunes launch, please close it back.)
Use Disk Utility -> select the iPod Device->First Aid->Repair (use option FAT32)
After the Repair complete, eject the iPod.
Connect back to the Mac
When iTunes launch, Restore the iPod when Prompted, (use FAT32)
Sync your library.

Updating ipod touch to os5.1 got an error message "cannot connect the ipod touch because the pairing record is missing" don't know what this means or how to fix but am stuck, only option is to answer ok and close the error box. Any ideas?
