Hi all,
I was surfing for a new boiler today and a screen opened with a stark warning saying that as a BT user my computer was insecure and my bank details etc were vulnerable. another little pop up opened telling me to contact Apple on 0800 112 0057 to resolve the problem. The address in the address bar read 162.243.40.201. I realise that this is a scam but the troubling thing was that I couldn't close the pop ups. In the end I had to force quit Safari and start again.
Is there any way to close these down when they open (without for closing Safari) or to stop them in the first place?

It is a scam. Please never call the number.
1. Force Quit Safari .
Press command + option + esc keys together at the same time.
When Force Quit window appears, select Safari . Press Force Quit button at the bottom of the window.
2. Relaunch Safari holding the shift key down.
3. Download and run adware medic tool

There is a compatibility check done via the update URL if the extension isn't compatible.

I cannot access the App Store and update or download apps and have gotten this same message on my new MacBook Air. "A unique hardware identifier from your computer must be sent to Apple to verify eligibility." A step by step solution or advice would be appreciated.

TS5376 For "The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer", I followed the steps and there is no C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files..Also, after the update, I no longer show my disk drive when I load a CD.

After downloading the new Itunes update, my compter now shows error: "The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer". I follwed the Apple fix / steps but it did not correct it. Also, after the update my disk drive is not recognized on my computer. If I load a CD, I cannot even access it.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes (similar to the advice above) and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies. E.g. TS2308: iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

Now in contrast to every other thread on this i get this error message eveytime i connect my soundcard (interface). Not when i start up the mac or anything, just when i connect the sound card. (the soundcard does not have its own power source but note that this has never happened before and i have had this soundcard for about a year!)
It deactivates so i cannot use it.
I have tried:
Connecting the soundcard to my mothers mac -> it worked!
Connecting an external harddrive to my mac -> it worked!
so basically, i can't be the soundcard or the cable and it cannot be the mac USB port?
I don't know what to do! i really need this to work! anyone got an idea??

How to disable security warning "Your current security settings put your computer at risk"

Hi,
I wonder if able to disable the security warning bar at the bottom of the IE window. I enabled the ActiveX control and plug-ins in the IE Option settings, this caused the security warning "Your current security settings put
your computer at risk" pop up whenever load the pages. Is there a way can turn off this warning?

That is not an option for Koreans...
In Korea, most of commercial, financial, or governmental operations need to be done on the Internet. In early 2000's, IE could not support high security outside US due to US laws (that was stupid, but happened) , so Korean sites developed cryptography ActiveX
controls to circumvent it. Korean government made laws to force all sites to use those kind of ActiveX controls at that time.
A decade has passed, and now the stupid US law has been repealed. But the cryptography ActiveX industry has become so strong (probably bribing the high officers in the government), that all Korean sites are still using those kind of ActiveX controls. And
you know, they require Windows and IE. Recently some sites started to support other browsers, but still the majority requires IE and ActiveX.
So, if you live in Korea, you have no choice but to use IE on Windows to get things done, and almost all sites popup ActiveX installation dialogues constantly. If you do not change the security settings, when you approve the installation, the whole site
refreshes. That is time-consuming and frustrating.
To keep my mental heath, I deal with all Korean sites in a virtual machine. To avoid the refresh problem, I have changed the security settings from "prompt" to "enable". The "Your security is at risk..." banner at the bottom
of IE is surely annoying. I hope Microsoft let us either remove that banner or remove the support of ActiveX controls altogether.

WARNING: You MUST backup your data before doing anything to your computer

99.99% of the time, problems you see on this board can be solved by a prudent backup plan. Lost data files, hard drive failures, testing for hardware issues, testing for software issues, misplaced data files, incompatible applications, failed software installs, hard drives which are too full, bad directories, bad permissions, corrupt files, all can be solved, if you had one thing: A backup plan which included at least two copies of your most essential files when they were in good condition. With all of the above conditions, testing for the condition's severity requires a backup be present, as numerous conditions have similar symptoms, which if they weren't present when you last made your backup, you'd be able to just recover your backup and everything would be good. No software maintenance program can replace the need to backup your data, as no software maintenance program can test for all the conditions which may need you to recover your data. Only backup software alone can let you recover yourself back to a working condition. Does it have to be an external hard drive? Not necessarily, even a printed copy of your data, a burnt CD, a flashdrive, or a remotely saved backup is better than nothing. So before you install anything, connect any new hardware, or risk yourself to any software maintenance program, backup your data. You'll be glad you did.
And feel free to ask in here what's the most convenient way to backup your data given your needs and abilities. Everyone can backup their data. So the only reason you wouldn't is if you have a prediliction for wanting the pain of losing your data.

Thanks for this suggestion.
While I understand the sentiment behind this tip and the need to backup, the tone reminds me of Chicken Little. It may read better as a suggestion of best practices (and why) rather than the extreme warning portrayed. The strong language also makes it sound like an opinion rather than objective suggestions.
The Title reads like, "OMG, don't touch your computer without a backup."
99.99% of the time problems on the board can't be fixed with a backup. Some are how to questions, for some a backup would help them recover from the issue but not fix it.
It may also help to break up the long paragraph. (Is there such a thing as a run on paragraph? )
Remember, for User Tips we are looking for concise, easy to understand Tips that in general can be read and understood by a wide audience.

Opening ReaderX causes "This program wants to make changes to your computer" warning.

I'm using Windows7.
Previous Adobe Reader versions worked fine on this computer; and when I first updated to Adobe Reader X it seemed to run correctly, until recently. Now everytime I try to open a .pdf file or the Reader X application, the screen goes black briefly and a "User Account Control" warning box pops-up with the message, "This program wants to make changes to your computer."
I have uninstalled Reader X, downloaded new install file from Adobe.com and re-installed the program, but it still does this everytime. I've designated Reader as the default program for .pdf files.
Can anyone tell me what's causing this to happen and/or what I can do to remedy the problem?

I am having the same problem!
Ever since I installed the latest update to Adobe Reader 10.1.3 (around the end of March) AR brings up the "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes..." whenever I open the reader. NO OTHER applications do this except those that really need this permission.
I have not changed any UACs and in reading Pat's suggestion on changing the UACs above, I would only want to make changes if they could apply only to the Adobe Reader program.
It seems to me that something in the recent update changed Reader to cause this alert.
I sure would like to get AR to run like it used to.

the Device Manager does not recognize the existence of the webcam after the scan also.

This is a common problem on many laptops, not just HP ones. I guess that the device BIOS might be bugged and cause troubles but that is just my guess. I haven't seen any solution for this except restoring the computer to a previous working condition but if the computer is a new one and the webcam hasn't worked at all, it may not work ever at all.

WARNING: Electrical safety and your computer

This posting is a follow-up to an answer I wrote to an earlier question. The information is, I feel, of significant importance to merit a separate message bearing the WARNING I placed in the subject line.
Often, when you give a Keynote presentation, you may have to interface your computer with the projector and/or sound system in a conference room or lecture hall. These are installed systems, so you usually have no options other than to use the cables they provide to you for connection to their equipment. If the systems are well designed, you should have no trouble. However ...
The first and most important concern you face is proper electrical safety for your computer. If the AC outlet they provide to you is not on the same AC power leg (circuit) as their equipment, a "ground loop" can occur. I won't go into detail on what a "ground loop" is, just be aware that it is not a good thing for you or your computer.
For a quick reference, the following is quoted from Wikipedia. For more details, do a Google search on the words "ground loop." - +"In an electrical system, a ground loop usually refers to a current, generally unwanted, in a conductor connecting two points that are supposed to be at the same potential, often ground, but are actually at different potentials. Ground loops created by improperly designed or improperly installed equipment are a major cause of noise and interference in audio and video systems. They can also create a hazard, since ostensibly "grounded" parts of the equipment, which are often accessible to users, are not at ground potential."+ - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groundloop(electricity)
If you do experience a ground loop it probably will be evident by a low-frequency "hum" or a spectral "buzz" through the sound system. With luck, this is all that will result. In the worst case, you could cause damage to your computer.
By the way, if the AC power adaptor that came with your computer uses a two-prong plug (US), it probably will not incur a ground loop through the AC system. WARNING: If it has a three-prong (grounded) plug, *DO NOT remove the ground pin or use a "ground lift" adaptor.* This is inviting disaster! The ground pin is there for the safety of you and your computer. Read on.
The first thing to do is try to +get all of the equipment onto the same power circuit.+ This may solve the problem immediately. If not, then there are two easy ways to avoid most ground loops:
1) Operate your computer from its battery rather than the AC power supply. This will "float" the computer from the AC power system and should avoid any power-related problems. However, if the audio system and the projector are on different AC power circuits, you still may create a ground loop when you connect them together via your computer. (This is bad system design.) If so, then try the next suggestion.
2) Use an audio-isolation transformer between the output of the computer and the audio input to the projector or sound system. One such device is the "Hum Eliminator" from Ebtech Electronics (www.ebtechaudio.com). This method offers another advantage in that it often can reduce or eliminate the low-level self-noise of the audio output stage of the computer. You will need a few simple cables and adaptors, and these are readily available at any Radio Shack store.
Sadly, there is no easy way to isolate your computer from the projector. The VGA (or DVI) connector makes a direct connection between your computer and the projector. If you experience a ground loop here, the only thing you can do is float your computer from the AC and operate from its battery.
In extreme cases, you may need to do both 1) and 2) above to get rid of the ground loop.
Now comes another serious WARNING:
+Do not ever connect the audio output of your computer directly to a "phantom powered" microphone input.+ This will, in all probability, cause serious damage to your computer! This usually happens only if you are connecting to a mixing console (hence the "phantom powered" microphone inputs); it is not likely if you are plugging-in directly to a projector or power amplifier.
How can you tell if the input has "phantom power" on it? Ask the sound system operator. If he/she doesn't understand your question or know the answer immediately, +do not connect+ until you can be assured to your satisfaction that it is safe.
If you must connect into a microphone input (with or without "phantom power") always use an audio-isolation transformer between your computer and the mixing console (as described above). It will, at the least, make your audio sound better and can save your computer from a major disaster.
By the way, you cannot always trust even the line-level inputs of some mixing consoles. In a church I once worked in, the inexpensive house mixing console (Peavy) had "phantom power" even on the line-level inputs. You know, of course, that when you allow the smoke to escape from a piece of electronic equipment it stops working.
Now, a few words about sound cards or external audio interfaces:
If the audio quality of your presentation is critical, the best way to output audio from your computer to any sound system is to use a high quality outboard audio interface (either FireWire or USB or a Digital-to-Analog converter). These devices generally will have better audio stages than the sound-driver in the computer. For my seminars, I use a TEC Audio TC-7510 outboard D-to-A from the Optical Digital output of my MBP and the audio quality is significantly improved over any other device I have tried. Be aware, however, that even these outboard interfaces can incur ground loops and if so, the only cure is to insert an audio-isolation transformer between them and the house sound system.

Here is a clarification of the sixth paragraph above:

If the (US) plug has only two prongs with one wider than the other, it is a polarized plug, and relies on the wider plug to make a proper ground connection. While this also is a safety feature the computer still may incur a ground loop. If the (US) plug has two prongs of the same width,it is non-polarized, and as a result probably will not experience a ground loop through the AC system.

Another user of your computer is currently using this connection. This user must disconnect before you can log on.

I have a single computer that is going to be shared between 5 people. In an effort to save time. I wanted the users to have a single shared LOCAL login to the computer.
Then each user could pull up an RDS session through RDWEB on our 2012 r2 RDS farm.
However, when I attempt to log in more than one user through RDWEB I receive:
Another user of your computer is currently using this connection. This user must disconnect before you can log on.
I have done some research on this, and followed this advice, and did the following steps on all my RDS session host and broker servers
Enable Multiple RDP Sessions
- Log into the server using Remote Desktop.
- Open the start screen (press the Windows key) and type gpedit.msc and open it
- Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Connections.
- Set Restrict Remote Desktop Services user to a single Remote Desktop Services session to Disabled.
- Double click Limit number of connections and set the RD Maximum Connections allowed to 999999.
However, it did not solve the problem. Anyone have suggestions?

In addition you can try below registry setting for multiple remote session.
HKEY_Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server
fSingleSessionPerUser REG_DWORD 0x00000000
Note: By default the registry value is set to 1, but you need to change to 0.
Also if you are making connection through gateway then recheck whether the setting is enabled on gateway side for multiple session.

Check that you do not run Firefox as Administrator.
Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties".
In the Compatibility tab, make sure that Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" is not selected.
You also need to check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program directory.
If you can't make the changes then you need to start Windows Explorer as Administrator.

I have just deployed an image to over 500 workstations, and they are all deep frozen using deepfreeze.
When users are logging in, and open Firefox they are getting the message "another program on your computer would like to modify firefox with the following add-on:" Adobe Acrobat - Create PDF 1.2
Yes I know u can do a one-time click and allow, but we have potentially 50,000+ students logging into these PCs and it is unacceptable that they are greeted with this message rather than the Homepage.
This is very dissapointing, as we upgraded to the latest version of firefox in preperation for rollout, and then added some software like adobe.
The profile is kept in the default user, so everytime a user logs in, they will get prompted with the message, and this will always happen because we use deepfreeze.
I need a FIX ASAP from mozilla on how to disable this pop-up via Group Policy...

One way you could try is to install Firefox on a fresh PC/image which has the same Adobe software versions installed as the clients. You may also have to install the same extensions as well as software for any additional plugins as on the clients. Start Firefox and make sure everything is okay. After that you can copy and overwrite the '''extensions.ini''', '''extensions.sqlite''' and '''pluginreg.dat''' files and probably the '''extensions''' folder and any supporting files of the extensions from this fresh profile, onto a client profile after temporarily disabling/unfreezing Deep Freeze. If everything is okay you can then push the changes onto the other clients via a logon/startup script after temporarily disabling Deep Freeze and then re-enable Deep Freeze.
