Warranty and Upgrade Queries

Five questions
1. If I change (upgrade) the Hard Disk / RAM Chip by myself (ie, not changed by Apple Care), will it void the warranty ?
2. What is the maximum supported Hard Disk capacity for Mac Pro late 2011 model ?
3. Can I 'just' buy an HDD / RAM (of specified specifications) from market and put that on Mac ?
4. After upgrading HDD, how to get the OS X back ? Can it be downloaded (and installed) online ?
5. How do I know warranty expire date of my Mac ?
Thanks a lot

But yes, and you might be interested in an SSD.
The ideal way is to remove the hard drive, put it in an external case and boot from there, and with the new drive installed internally, then just clone the system back.  You can do the reverse, clone first and then move to extenal - OWC sells kit to make it easier.

  • Warranty and upgrading memory

I'm thinking of upgrading the RAM on my iBook G4 12" from 512MB to 1.5GB but I have a question.. if I fit the memory myself will it void the 1 year warranty I got when I purchased my iBook?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

No, it is a do it yourself procedure that will not affect your iBook warranty or AppleCare. The new item will not be included in your Apple warranty unless purchased from Apple, but most suppliers have lifetime warranties on their RAM. Apple's instructions and photos here, just select your model: http://www.apple.com/support/diy/

  • Warranty and upgrades

I'd like to upgrade the hard drive on my x60s.  I found the ThinkPad 250GB 5400 rpm Serial ATA Hard Drive through the "find compatable accessories for your computer" link on Lenovo's website.
I've spent the past 45 minutes trying to find out whether buying and installing this myself will void the warranty, but you can't actually view your warranty on the website (at least not as far as I can tell - if anyone knows how please share).  Here is the information I was able to obtain:
    Status:        Expiration date:        Location:
    In warranty        2010-01-07        UNITED STATES
This product has a three year limited warranty which includes a ThinkPlus warranty upgrade. This product is entitled to parts and labor and is entitled to EZServ. This machine is also entitled to the Thinkpad Protection Service. Customers may call the PC HelpCenter for more information.
So, am I safe to buy the hard drive from Lenovo and install it myself?  Or do I need to take it to a service provider?
    Solved!

  • Warranty and User Upgrades

I'm thinking about buying my first Mac. I'm a power user, a programmer, and I like to tinker with my machine. I've used primarily pre-built Windows boxes over the years, though I've built one of my machines and upgraded the others a few times. I noticed that Apple hardware can be expensive, so I was thinking of buying a baseline Mac Pro system, and then upgrading the RAM (I know about the big heatsink issue) and later the HDs and video card.
How does Apple handle warranty support for when the end-user does the upgrades herself with third-party hardware? I heard that it doesn't void the warranty on the entire machine (unless it shorts out everything :P), but what if something goes wrong? How good are they at honoring the warranty and how much of my warranty will be voided as I do the upgrades?
I never really considered a Mac before because it was impossible to upgrade myself.
    Mac Pro

If you look at the tabs on this window, there is "Manuals" and if you click there, you will see the "DIY" Do It Yourself Guides to upgrades you can do: RAM, disk drives, PCI Express, video and optical drives. We all wonder about some of that.
It is when you modify the case, the design, or attempt to over clock memory, bus or cpu etc that you are "on your own." or use flashed components.
They have helped make it easier to run Windows, and Intel hardware supports virtualization which helps too, so you can run multiple virtual machines.
However, asking for or talking about rumors, future products and features, you won't or shouldn't find much on Apple's own Discussions. But lots of help in any and all DIY type upgrades.

  • Does it void my warranty to upgrade the hard drive and ram in a MacBook?

Recently a new store in my local mall called Peachmac opened. They do repairs and upgrades. I went there to see about a hard drive and RAM upgrade. They told me if I do it myself, it voids the warranty. I have about 8 months of Apple care left on my Mac and don't want to loose it. My real question is does it void your warranty even though the instruction booklet specifically tells you how to do it? The reason I'm wondering this is because they want $69 an hour plus money for parts. They quoted around $125-$150 (for a 500GB HD and 4GB of RAM). Is this an ok deal? Or should I go for an SSD? I saw Crucial was doing a bundle for a 128GB SSD and 4GB of RAM at my local CompUSA. Which one is a better deal? Thanks!

If you replace the memory, it doesn't void your warranty, but the warranty will be voided if you replace the hard drive

  • My iphone 4S is out of warranty and isnt working properly, can I upgrade

My iphone 4S is out of warranty and isnt working properly, can I upgrade to the iphone 5S? and for how much?

For as little as $199, depending on whether you're eligible for an upgrade with your carrier, or if you decide to purchase it out-of-pocket, and how much you can sell your broken iPhone 4S for.

  • Apple tells me that i no longer have warranty yet my computer is only 2 years old. One year warranty and i have applecare (which adds 2 years). will they fix their problems of having BLACK SCREENS OF DEATH. 2010 models affected should have been recalled.

    WHY?
It literally makes no sense at all. Apple itself has always had my back. UNTIL NOW. when my problems arise. i am a full time student and when working on video editing projects or ANYTHING that uses a graphics card (youtube, diablo 3, quicktime player, EVEN IPHOTO) causes my computer to BLACK SCREEN.
THIS IS AN ISSUE APPLE NEEDS TO RESOLVE, especially when they tell me i am not under warranty and have NO APPLE PRODUCTS REGISTERED? it is like they deleted it because last time i checked i had 3 ipods, an iphone4 and my macbook pro all registered. and when the store checked my account i have 0 apple products apparently.
I REGISTERED MY IPHONE IN THE STORE STANDING NEXT TO THE GUY WHEN I BOUGHT IT.
anyways. yes apple. nice going with a significant issue of screens cutting out for no F3948ing reason. 2010 models especially i have been reading about (which mine is) as well as laptops made before that.
    no recall?
    an update that doesn't work?
denying my applecare's existence? (even when i brought the disk and all my applecare info?)
buying a new laptop today NOT A MAC... because a WORKING computer is a necessity.
I will still try to fix this mac as i have over 2,000$ invested in it. including parallels.
IF ANYONE CAN ADRESS THIS ISSUE or figure out how it would be resolved, please let me know.
    Thanks.

    Do this.
Go to the Apple Support page and type in your serial number. When the screen comes up showing that Serial number having Applecare extended warranty take a screen shot of it or Print it out to a PDF file and then Print a Hard Copy of either of those things. Take that with you when you take your Mac in to be looked at.
Good Luck with the Lenovo. I hear they are the same quality as when IBM was making them. Personally I have always used Dell Business Class notebooks and have never had any problems with them. Still have one that is going on 11 years old and it still runs as good as the day I bought it, actually a little better because I've upgrade the CPU, GPU. RAM and HDD.

I have no idea why this has happend ive been using the phone for 2years bought it on pay as you go and now all of a sudden its stating the above error i have never come across this problem before and currently im using 3GS and Iphone 4S

    Sounds like it's been blacklisted.
Even if it hasn't, downgrading voids any warranty and forfeits all rights to support. You hacked your phone. You can't get help here.

  • 1 1/2 year old dv4t screen failure and upgrade question

Hi, I need some help troublshooting my HP dv4t notebook PC.  First of all, let me mention that I am pretty good with computers as I have my CompTIA A+ and Network+ 2009 certifications and I work full time in a computer store as a repair technician but I need some help here diagnosing my problem.
My dv4t was probably one of the very first ones off the production line as a replacement for my old dv2500 which was given to me by a case manager about a year and a half or so ago.  Within the past few weeks, I have had intermittent backlight issues and then the picture on the screen itself would not come up or would be extremely scrambled.  I thought that it might have been the display cable so I went ahead and ordered a replacement and got it installed and now I have no video on the LCD at all.  The webcam does work, as does the light on the HP logo on the back of the notebook lid.  So I kind of have it narrowed down to either the motherboard or the LCD panel itself but I'm not sure which one it could be.  Does anybody have any ideas of which one is causing my problems?
By the way, I was only given a 1 year warranty, and this is my 4th HP laptop and the first one that actually outlasted it's one year warranty so I'm a bit frustrated that I can't seem to get a computer with any kind of a decent build quality on it.
Also, is it possible to request an upgrade for a component while it is being repaired?  I have the Lightscribe DVD burner currently and I'd like to step up to a blu-ray drive if it is possible.

Yes, I do get a picture with an external monitor.  I talked to HP customer service and they seem to think it is the motherboard.  Considering that I've already tried a new cable, I am thinking that it would be the motherboard.  One thing that happened yesterday when I was diagnosing the computer at work was the new display cable was actually smoking where the cable would normally go from the display assembly to the chassis of the notebook which makes me think even more that its a motherboard.
While I could probably fix it myself for almost half the price of the $398 quote I got from HP, its almost worth the extra money just to not gamble on a $200 part and guess wrong.  Money is tight for us right now and I'd hate to shell out for a motherboard and turn out that its actually a problem with the LCD panel itself.

  • Upgrading queries from 3.5 to Bi 7.0

  • Hi, my iPhone 3GS wall charger stoped working, and I went to Orange shop with my warranty and L.I.G. insurance. They said I should also give them the phone for almost 10 days, isn't there a faster way, is it possible the Apple Store replaces my wall charge

My 5YO daughter owns her very own IPhone 3GS, she got it for her 5YO birthday on the 24th of june. its allready upgraded to iOS5, and works like a charm.
Last evening, while it was charging, a flame appeared and the charger stopped working. The USB still works.
It was plugged in a Belkin 3700 joule along with my 47 Inch Full HD TV .
No storm or something like that, and there was nothing wrong with my TV, as in was still running.
    Problem.
I went today to an Orange store here in Romania, with the charger, invoice, warranty, and L.I.G. (London Insurrace Group ((I think))) insurrance, and they said I MUST also bring the iPhone, and thet it will take just about 10 working days for them to give me back the Iphone, and a new charger.
Is there a faster way I can get the wall charger replaced?
Should I try going to the Apple Store with the warranty from Orange.
    Thank you for your answers.

I dropped the phone, but not light ! I tried to start it with the restoration and upgrading but I do not , what can I do ?

If you dropped the device and cannot get it to start up, then you have probably damaged it to the point it needs to be looked at by Apple or your Authorized Apple Service Provider, whomever handles service in your location. User damage is not covered under warranty, so be prepared to pay.

  • Migration of BW system to New Hardware and Upgrade to NW04s

    Hi,
I'm not sure this is the forum for this post but here goes...
We have recently started a project to migrate our current BW3.5 system to new hardware (HP Superdome) and then upgrade to NetWeaver 2004s.
To do this, we've taken a copy of our current Dev 3.5 system and moved it to the new hardware and will unicode and upgrade to NW04s.  Once this is complete, we plan to install NEW instances of QA and Prod with NW04s.  We will TRANSPORT all our configuration and reload all the providers in QA and Prod.  This will be a MASSIVE task as we have hundreds of infoproviders.  Additionally, I'm concerned we will not pick objects currently in 3.5 Prod system (e.g. custom queries/workbooks, infopkgs, process chains, variables, etc.) but not in current 3.5 Dev system.
My question is this - can we instead take copies of the current QA and Prod (3.5) systems and migrate, unicode, and upgrade in the new Superdome hardware.  Per Basis, this is NOT possible due to the size of the current systems - approx 2.5 Terabytes.  But maybe half of the database is consumed by old PSA's, unused providers, etc.  If we were to clean up our current system and do a database reorg to reduce the database size, is it possible to do a system copy (Dev to Dev, QA to QA, Prod to Prod) --> any help/insight is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Senthil

I had this experience in my previous project and i wanna share a with you. we have migrated our total bw landscape from alfa servers to HP superdome servers.
we took all the copies of all the boxes( dev,QA,PRO) and migrate to superdome and upgrade to NW04. but in your case you are not taking copies QA and PRODUCTION. This is not realistic scenario. you got to move all the objects and configuration from dev to respective systems and load the data in the production.
so you have to take all the copies of all the boxes and migrate to superdome and upgrage to NE04, is the right way of doing.

  • What About Returning iPad 2 Replace and Upgrading To The New iPad?

I rently got a replace iPad for my iPad 2 cause the glass was broke but now I'm wondering if I could bring the replace iPad 2 back and upgrade to The New iPad and just pay the diffents?

Because they don't do that. Apple exchanged your broken iPad for an identical model for the out-of-warranty replacement price and that's all they'll do for you. If you'd wanted the new iPad, you should have sold your broken iPad 2 for parts and put that money and the replacement cost toward a new iPad. As it is now, your only option is to sell the replacement you received and use that money toward a new iPad.
    Regards.

  • Warranty Serivce Upgrade - Which One

I am looking at the Warranty Service Upgrade and have a few questions.
    1. Looks like the T61 come with a base warranty: 1 Year Depot/Express Warranty
    a. What does this actually cover?
    2. We are considering a 3 year full warranty: 3 Year EasyServ + 3 Year ThinkPad Protection for 1 Year EasyServ ThinkPad
    a. What exactly is EasyServ?
    b. What does 3 Year ThinkPad Protection for 1 Year EasyServ ThinkPad mean?
    3. Is there a URL that describes in full the meaning of the warranties? At the moment, "help me decide" is not that helpful.

    Thanks for your comments.
